I just came out of an abusive relationship so I'm majority projecting here. But my first thought was he's keeping it to use it against her. If she gets frustrated enough to decide to leave, he has the ring to say "look I had bought the ring, I was just about to propose (but now I can't because you're leaving)" and then she'd stay and then he can use the wounded trust to not propose another x amount of years while she jumps hoops to "prove herself".

the ring isn't for him to marry her, it's to keep her from marrying someone else. this way he doesn't have to pay child support & he gets free hot meals & rent money while keeping an eye on the mother of his kids. she needs to get a moving van one day when he's at work 🙂

Even just thinking about it LoGiCaLly, which men like this swear they’re so great at, why should he marry her? She’s playing married, giving him street cred at work (men with families make more $$ and get promoted more often), opened her womb TWICE, likely gave the kids his last name, paying bills around the house, has told him she’s ready to wait for him indefinitely…what bargaining power does she even have left? He knows he can walk all over her and she won’t do boo. And neither will anyone else in their lives because they don’t actually care about the plight of women.

No one that genuinely wants to propose would carry the ring around for what will likely be 2+ years. I dislike saying it because I wish for her sake it weren’t, but he probably only has it as a reminder that he has power over her. He has had seven years to figure out how to propose and get married “his way”, it should be obvious at this point he doesn’t want to. If he were a decent person he could’ve told her it wasn’t happening when she said marriage was important to her, but he was probably betting she was too much of a pushover to call him on it (and she was) 🤷‍♀️
