If I lost my job, I would expect my husband to stay as long as I was actively looking for another one and contributing in other ways in the meantime. But I would not expect him to stay with someone who was just sitting at home watching him go to work and then come home and do everything else. Leaving in that situation would not make him a “prostitute,” it would be just not wanting to care for an adult child.

As for women who want “provider men,” usually the exchange isn’t sex for money. It’s homemaking (taking care of the household tasks and children) for having one’s financial needs covered. Both partners are working, just in different ways.

You weren't engaged in sex for payment. You were engaged in a relationship in which you had expectations for a partner who was capable of taking care of themselves financially with the potential to eventually care for you financially while you care for them and likely shared children domestically. The selection of men based on gifts or cars or what have you is not exchanging sex for money. It's choosing who you relationship based on their financial capacities.

The attached element that a prostitute isn't attracted to and doesn't like you at all is also not being addressed very much here. The prostitute wouldn't interact with you at all and will not after unless there's money.

A woman who is dumping the man had consistent interaction and love...she's just not willing to partner with someone unstable. She likely still has love for this person and didn't have to be bribed to even be there.

Sugar relationships and gold-digging are already considered a form of sex work. It's basically a subscription model of paying for sex, and the involved parties usually understand that it's transactional. Neither party would be there if the other wasn't following through on their promise. It's a business relationship.

The rest you're describing are not explicitly or implicitly exchanges of sex for financial gain. It's a reductive view of relationships. A lot of people can't afford a partner who is not financially stable. Your partner's own financial stability is a major factor in your own since you share expenses. If they're in a relationship, the totality of the person is being considered - a woman is attracted to her husband's traits, and one of those is being able to provide for the household (which possibly includes children).

You're also presenting this with women as the sole initiators of prostitution. Are men who seek out sexually open and attractive partners guilty of being clients if they buy gifts or try to impress her with his job?

The being left cuz you lost your livelihood. A lot of men who end up in this situation expect a traditional wife who doesn't work. She isn't with you only because of your money. Because marriage is a contract and if you expect to stay with you, at home, taking care of the house without being able to make her own money. At some level I understand the reasoning that any sort of transactional exchange resembles prostitution, but I also don't think the gradiations are wholly meaningless. Standard prostitution doesn't involve exclusivity on the part of the sex worker and usually works on a short-term basis, so transactional arrangements that join transacting for sex with a personal long-term relationship of some kind are somewhat different.

At some point you tip over an invisible line between a transactional exchange between two people, and a long-term romantic/sexual relationship between two people where financial dependency is a dealbreaker. I'm personally not sure precisely where that line falls, but if I had to guess it would be somewhere in the blurry middle between a person who breaks up the moment the spending slows down, and a person who sticks it out through fiscal ups and downs but has a breaking point somewhere during a prolonged unemployment. It's the difference between 'I'm only with you for your money' and 'I love you but this isn't what I signed up for,' and that difference mainly lies in the heart.

It is rare I post to this subreddit, but it is my understanding that posts need to be CMV (Change My View). I am going to share my views and I don't need to change your view.

I agree there are similarities between prostitutes, Gold Diggers and Sugar Babies. Personally, I have been vanilla dating since 1986 and have been a Sugar Daddy since 2019. Although I have not been on a vanilla date since 2023. But I have never been into the Prostitute/John thing, and I have never met a prostitute in person.

I read a post on r/AskAmerican where 50% of the responses thought Sugar Babies are prostitutes. In my opinion, Sugar Babies are not prostitutes. Real Sugar Babies enjoy dating their Sugar Daddies and they in a relationship. Although the relationship may or may not be monogamous. The longest relationship I ever had in my life was 5 years and it was with a Sugar Baby. I have been in age gap relationships for half my life and trust me dating a 20-something women is way better than dating a 40-something woman.

Patriarchal capitalism distorts human relationships.

Patriarchal capitalism, built by wealthy men for the benefit of wealthy men, hijacks the male survival and reproductive drive/strategy (based in individualism, competition, domination, status, resource hoarding, etc.) and pushes it to the extreme by creating artificial scarcity and precariousness. But it externalizes the costs of maintaining and reproducing the workforce to women, through their unpaid domestic, care, community, and reproductive labour.

It is “prostitution”, but only because patriarchal capitalism makes forces women to be economically dependent on men, and turns their bodies into commodities.

If a) a person needs to earn money through selling their labour in order to survive i.e. meet their basic human needs, b) women are kept out of waged labour that allows them economic independence (women’s labour is undervalued and often invisible under patriarchal capitalism and so even when they do that labour for wages, feminine-coded jobs pay less than masculine-coded jobs. Feminine labour is more difficult to scale and profit off of, and so it is treated as less valuable… even though it’s the backbone of society that holds society together), and c) the female survival and reproductive drive/strategy (based in community, cooperation, sharing, care, collaboration, group cohesion, and long-term planning) is suppressed or controlled by men, then what is created is a system that forces women to sell their labour to men. It prevents men and women from entering a relationship as equals.

Women are placed in a position where their survival depends on them selling their labour to men. And then people act like it’s some kind of revelation (and moral failing) when a woman has the extremely rational response (often subconsciously) of selling or trading the things that make her valuable to men, to men, in exchange for financial compensation or security.

That’s why, if you are someone who would greatly prefer real connection over transactional relationships, it starts with breaking down the systems/structures and narratives that create and maintain these conditions.
