Most people's brains can't model these dynamics correctly. It's a curve on a chart. There are continuum aspects at play. Nuance. SOME men have always dated losers. Some women have always had insane standards. But what has the change been, overall.

And honestly, that is hard to know with any certainty. The data is muddy. Lots of noise in the signal. In some demographics, women are indeed deluded about their chances of landing a guy who meets their standards. And such women are loud and proud about their 666 standards.

But income hypergamy is naturally decreasing overall: the math is unavoidable given the relative economic performances of the genders. Still, there are signs that when a woman chooses male companionship and perhaps kids over meeting her hypergamous needs, there are significant negative consequences to the relationship.

It also seems likely that overall, even if female standards are not necessarily going up in aggregate absolute terms, they may be going up relative to what men can provide in an egalitarian world. This is to say that more women are opting out altogether, and those women that do eventually choose a guy to settle down with may be choosing him later and time sharing higher value men they cannot land before the settle down phase.

The feeling this dynamic creates in men may be what men interpret as women's standards going up. More men get left out of the SMP altogether, and many of those that are not left out get less of women's most attractive years, thus having larger sexual dry spells during the men's earlier years. And then the dynamics of marriage itself are different, with more ending sooner as women yeet out once they have received support through the hardest child raising years.

It depends. The most successful men I've seen aren't those who have money, good looks, or status. They're often worthless losers who can't keep a job, spend their spare time drinking and using dope, do nothing with themselves, and most of the time, aren't even good looking. I genuinely don't get the appeal.

There's a reason drug and alcohol abuse are dealbreakers for me, no matter how attractive a woman might be. It is not worth going through that kind of hell, speaking from the experience of having an alcoholic family member. I know some might disagree, that if she's hot and passionate, it's worth it; I can tell you otherwise.

As for standards going up, I expect they have to some extent. Women have the kind of independence their ancestors often weren't allowed, so there's less need to marry someone to secure a financial future. Hypergamy was amplified by societal pressure, even if it wasn't created from nothing. However, I'd caution against using Youtube/TikTok snippets of women demanding their partner make 250K a year and applying it to an entire gender.

I know so many women who are smart, well-educated, attractive and fit, know how to cook, clean, and take care of their homes etc. At the same time, I know a lot of guys who live like college frat boys and expect women to be impressed. Women’s standards have gotten higher (at least in big cities with high levels of education), but that’s because so many women aim for perfection in their own lives whereas men aim for “good enough.” Men who take care of themselves and their home, are emotionally intelligent, and are ambitious will be successful with women. Women are hypergamous. A low value woman has pretty low standards but the man must still be better than her in some way. A high value woman has high standards. So I suppose neither side is right.

Here, I'll settle it: Some women have high standards and some have low standards, some have a combination of high and low standards, and standards may vacillate depending on variables such as blood-alcohol content, self image, needing to just get laid, available options, etc. Standards are subjective. Another huge factor is that people’s stated standards online or when asked, often are higher than their actual standards when dating. It’s easy to start describing your ideal person, not just your basic requirements.

My guess is that there's two modes of doing well with women.

One way is to appeal to a woman's forebrain. The forebrain is the part that does the talking when women are asked what they want. This has a ton of requirements and lots of reasons to be turned off by little random things a man does. A woman evaluating a man with her forebrain is going to go on a hundred dates and be rarely impressed by any of them. She'll talk about how men are crappy or "meh".

The other is to appeal to the older parts of her brain, the reptilian brain. This is turned on by things that animals are turned on by. Maybe he's tall and good looking. Maybe he's confident. Maybe he's got big muscles and he seems like he could beat up anyone who threatens her. He says things that she wants to hear, which encourages he to turn off her forebrain. He's handsy and she didn't know if she likes that, but she back-rationalizes that she must've liked him is she didn't stop him. This is the "easy mode", if a man can pull it off. He also manages to get women not to evaluate things too much with her forebrain. Maybe it's influenced by our genetics that just wants to spread our genes, even if the relationship is terrible for the woman as an individual. It's almost like people's genes are saying "mate with this guy and your sons will sleep with a lot of women and you'll have a lot of grandkids". Not a thought a woman would want to consciously have, but there's a certain evolutionary logic involved. In many cases, guys who appeal to this part of a woman are seen as a "temporary thing" because he doesn't seem like good husband material. But the relationship can stretch on indefinitely. He can also be real shitty, but the drama can appeal to some women.

Women who are cerebral tend to evaluate guys with the forebrain. Dads evaluate guys who date their daughter with the forebrain. Guys who appeal to the forebrain are said to look good "on paper". This is also the "hard way" because the forebrain is the most recent and largest part of the brain, so he's evaluated on dozens and dozens of criteria. It's nearly impossible for anyone to pass all the criteria, so women are sometimes a little ambivalent even if he's a good guy.

Lots of shitty guys can appeal to the reptilian brain. This is why there's a certain type of shitty guy who does well with women. They can be awful, unreliable, disloyal partners. Women thinking with their reptilian brain is more likely to lead to shitty outcomes than thinking with the forebrain. Lots of women have fucked up their lives by having relationships and kids due to reptilian brain thinking.

That's my theory on it. There's a "hard way" and an "easy way". Unfortunately, the shittiest men are often on the easiest path. The best, most stand-up guys are often on the most difficult path. That's why some assholes think women are easy, and a lot of respectable guys think dating is filled with difficult women. And to be clear, there are also asshole guys who also think dating is awful because they aren't managing to pull-off the easy-mode of dating.

The standard is basically like, attractive, fun, and safe-seeming (which is not a high standard seeing as this could easily describe a decently trained dog).

Lots of men aren't even close to meeting this standard on one or more fronts.

The first group is aware that any standard a decently trained dog could meet is not a very high standard.

The second group is aware they aren't meeting this standard, and angry because they feel by default an average dude should be able to meet said standard and if they cannot this is obvious evidence the standard is too high and should be lower.

A similar thing happened with the American Education system, honestly. Rather than help children achieve what was a very normal, intelligent, and good education system (that still wouldn't have matched the best on the planet for the record) we decided that was too difficult and that lowering the standard would be best. Now kids and their dumb parents are still acting like the standard is too high, because stupid and failing people generally would rather put the standard even lower than rise to meet it.

If you have a group of women and they map into a bell curve when it comes to how high their standards are, more women with low standards are going to easily end up in relationships and stay in those relationships longer. So single women will have higher standards than the average woman. But single women are the ones men are pursuing.

People who interact with women primarily as targets of romantic interest will base their perception of women's standards on their success rate with those single women.

People who interact with women as friends and relatives and take interest in their lives even when they're in relationships already will know that women put up with a ton of bs on average.

Exactly the same principle works in reverse also, women are convinced that men only want [insert super misogynistic trope about hot blonde bimbos with tons of surgery] and they are confused when they're rejected and are wondering what's up with society. The whole not like other girls pickme type who usually put other women down are the ones who think men have way "higher standards" than they actually do on average.

Obligatory note that I'm not saying anything about individuals or that there are no exceptions, there's plenty of exceptions, it's just a slight statistical trend that show up in people's lives enough for them to extrapolate wrong conclusions.

The gap arises from focusing on different traits when talking about standards.

Example: Calling a guy she dated a "loser" cuz he's a fuckboy - the woman has "low standards" regarding how she's being treated, disregarding the fact the guy is 6'1 and muscular - "high standards" regarding how he looks.

Not all women agree to being treated badly, not all women regard a one-night-stand as being treated badly.

Also, not all women care to a large degree about looks.

But enough do agree and care that those 'low-standard' 'high-standard' group gaps emerge.
