There could be issues caused by it, but if people don't want to date, no-one's going to start farming them.

Population collapse is definitely a problem in society, but will it be catastrophic? Probably not. Humanity's greatest strength is adaptation. Try not to fall into fear mongering. The same applies to climate change, technology concerns, anything else.

Economic upheaval is what’s driving down population growth in the short term. People can’t afford to breed, and are making the educated decision to remain childless. Gradual population decline or a rapid adjustment will be inevitable, and has nothing to do with some arse backwards theory regarding some imaginary war of the sexes and everything to do with the ramifications of end stage capitalism and the Anthropocene extinction colliding.

In the US there's no incentive to have children and every incentive not too.

Most work places offer only 3 weeks of maternity leave (which is psychologically bad for both mother and child) and no paternity leave at all for fathers. Childcare is exorbitantly expensive now. Our parents are working to older ages so they aren't able to help. But most households can no longer survive on a single income. If you're uninsured you will go bankrupt just delivering a child and even if you do have coverage it can still cost thousands to give birth. This is before mentioning that most people in the US have their insurance tied to employment and many pregnant people are let go or fired once they're pregnant. So basically you're fucked

Certain states have begun criminalizing miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies with antiquated abortion bans that don't reflect the reality of medically necessary abortions, so now if you live in a state like Louisiana and you have an ectopic pregnancy a doctor has to wait until the fetal heartbeat stops (you can literally septic shock before this happens and they have to pretty much let you bleed out on the table) so now there's a tangible risk that you could not receive adequate care if there are any complications within your pregnancy. Complications outside of death that arise from this are fertility issues.

The price of living has skyrocketed, wages have stagnated, we can't afford children. This is before you get into the general stagnation women's careers experience when they have children but I digress.

This isn't a dating issue it's an issue of older generations playing fuck you got mine and wanting to turn around and pretend that the economic policies they voted for didn't cause this and refusing to relinquish political power.

I want kids, I have names picked out. It's unlikely I'll ever be able to afford them.

Lack of dating is definitely an issue, yes.

But we also have to contend with people are getting married and choosing to have much smaller families. Middle class and up families likely have around 2 children, '1 and done' is increasingly common,3 is increasingly uncommon and 4 is basically unheard of for non-religious parents with college degrees.

So what can we do about it? I have said this before and will say it again...

There’s no silver bullet. Better economic support for parents (maternity / paternity leave, access to affordable childcare, tax credits) would be helpful, but there seems to be a diminishing return on what this can really accomplish. Doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t pursue the strategy, but we need to be reasonable about expectations.

So immigration is just going to have to continue to supplement. Which is mostly good, but there are also downsides to immigration, it’s not a seamless process, and we need to be prepared for that and realistic about the pros and cons as well.

What we really need is a cultural shift that celebrates and supports families and children. More kid friendly spaces - restaurants with play spaces, patience with parents who are out and about with kids. Supportive grandparents and siblings who live nearby or multigenerational houses and communities, because we encourage people not to move away to pursue economic growth but rather bring economic growth back to their own communities. Parents raising kids bolstered by aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins.

We also need to lower our standards about children because they are way too resource intensive. Standards are very high and while objectively that is a good thing, the impact is that more resources go to each child so parents have fewer children (said as a mom of 2 who would love 3 but just don’t see how we could make it work)

The best environment conducive to raising kids and larger families are safe neighborhoods where kids can rove in bands independently, with neighbors and cousins and trusted adults, not being chauffeured around after school to expensive extracurricular activities where adults are staring at them the whole time

Most people are not smart enough to work out the 3rd + order effects of certain phenomena. I don’t think it will be as drastic as OP cites, but there will be a correlative effect that’s pretty interesting.

In most of the world, the people who are reproducing at a high rate are anything but socially liberal. How this plays out long term is that the same women pushing hard politically reproduce far less, and they’re value structure dies with their lineage. I guess women’s rights are cool to talk about now, but not cool enough to care about for future women.

Fact is- population collapses haha happened before. A lot of the times thru war, famine and diseases, but economically after affects too.

Every time the survivors that have skills become highly sought after and get paid more. They move to bigger houses. Hire help hand more kids since they can afford to AND have more room for them. Technology replaces the manual labor thru “the mother of necessity” and there is a bump in population.

Last time it happened in the US was after WW2 and the baby boom that happened literally is why they are named Boomers.

You need to make an argument for it, weighing pros and cons. Just stating it is not enough. Because i would just state the opposite, it is a good thing overall, we just need some adaptation, and if humans die out eventually due to not wanting to procreate anymore, that is a fine outcome too.

For the juice not being worth the squeeze there is an awful lot of worry and discussion around pressuring women to settle and have kids….Perhaps the juice really is worth the squeeze it’s just that men are being lazy and cheap? If men want women on board then they are going to have to make it worth their wild to settle and reproduce. 🤷‍♀️After all it seems like men who are most concerned about this not women so men will have to give if they want change.

Yes, I think very few people are waking up to this problem, it's not limited to the U.S., or even "the West", it's basically everywhere in the world that is at all modern. We've been told that overpopulation is a problem for so long that it's going to take a long time and a lot of effort to reorient people towards the greater threat of population collapse.

I've thought a lot about solutions, I'm planning to share some ideas in this forum. I think they're known, we're living in modernity, but human nature has not changed, and the solutions of the past likely guide us toward the solutions of the future.

More poverty will make people have more kids again. Either something bad will happen and we’ll become impoverished and reproduce again, or society will become increasingly automated Ave we won’t need a large human population at all.

The biggest problem is supporting the elderly, but as long as productivity increases, the money to support the elderly can be taken from somewhere.

Blame "equality" and technology. Imagine the damage AI will cause in 30 years. Many people will be out of work, men will be the most affected because we are nothing without a job and the status that comes with it. I'm fairly bullish for male prospects in 100 years. The sex ratio in many countries, including the USA, favors males, i.e. more females. As population drops, that ratio will likely skew further, which means that all the problems men are experiencing will likely increasingly melt away.

Childless liberal women will die alone in shitty nursing homes. They have roughly half a century or more to look forward to of declining looks. They will be replaced by submissive women who have children. Men will die alone also, but for us it's same shit different day so nothing new.
