There was a post talking about compassion and emotional support, and there's been lots said on the sub about women wanting men to be more emotional and more supportive. In my experience there's often a disconnect in men's understanding of what women are looking for.

It reminded me of a piece I wrote to help a couple of male friends be more supportive to their partners.

Here's what I sent them, I'm wondering what your thoughts on it are.

(Please don't take offense to it, it's written by a man for men).

Ok so first up you aren't alone. Many, many guys are fuckin clueless when it comes to women venting and just like you they feel powerless. Many see venting as their female friend/sister/GF as being in distress and they want to help.

Sometimes the venting can be overwhelming and all you want to do is "fix the issue" ASAP so she stops venting and you don't feel overwhelmed and powerless.

The secret here is simply understanding what women are doing when they vent.

When women vent it is a verbal emotional dump. All they are doing is processing their emotions outloud by rehashing the days events and the issues and emotions they had.

They aren't in distress, they aren't freaking out, they definitely don't want advice.

If you can recognize this and realise they want NOTHING from you except for you to sit there and listen to them dump out their emotions, it'll make your life so much easier.

If you try to offer ANY advice or recommendations etc they will immediately feel like you're not listening and you dont care.

Your only job is to listen, agree and empathize.

E.g.

Sister "Sally in the office is such a fuckin bitch because of a,b,c,d".....

Even if you completely disagree with the assessment and you think your sister is the issue (or something else is) your job is to empathize

"God, yeah she's a bitch, I can see why that's so upsetting"

Some simple phrases to respond with when listening to venting

" I can see why you feel that way"

" You're so right"

"God she a bitch (or he's asshole"

"You're a saint for putting up with it"

" Wow, I don't think I could handle that"

" damn that's so harsh"

" Wow, anyone would be pissed off"

This isn't really a CMV, I was forced to word it this way.
