I can only imagine. I'm lucky enough to have the chance to have my daughter 6 nights a week and be the primary parent in her life. I'm so very sorry that you fell victim to the discrimination against fathers.

Because the stuff in the traditional/stereotypical "male" box is objectively, scientifically of superior value and fulfillment than the stuff in the traditional/stereotypical "female" box.
Don't listen to those people saying it's a matter of personal subjective values, they're part of the patriarchy too!

Children are not weapons. Your ex is too selfish to realize how much she is hurting them just to get to hurt you. Keep up the good fight, its not for you, but for them.

Nah life is all about balance. If we want true equality, we must acknowledge that there are extremists on both sides that hurt the cause and each other. Only working together as humans, instead of man vs woman, can we change the public mentally enough that travesties such as this aren't allowed to occur.

"I'm so angry at my ex-SO for what likely is no good reason, better ruin my child's relationship with them. That'll probably leave no mark on the child and is sure to teach that good for nothing ex-SO a lesson."
Please people don't draw your children in to your own personal problems with the child's other parent. You might not care about them but your child certainly does. At least does until you badmouth the other parent in front of your child enough. You're only fucking up your child big time on top of being a horrible person yourself.
Of course if the other parent is really no good for a parent, for example has an alcohol or a drug problem, then it's definitely the right thing to keep them away from your children until they get their shit together. But seriously. Come on. Think of the fucking child, not yourself, you're a parent, everything you do should be for the child's wellbeing.

It's unbelievable how much effort men have to put into custody battles. Women have the upper hand by default and just about anything they say is taken as fact, and it becomes the man's job to disprove it. It's also unbelievable some of the things women can get away with lying about in court that were never issues until it came down to custody. Abuse, anger, unfit parenting, all of it. I'm not saying these things don't happen, it's just amazing how many women lie about it and are automatically believed because they are a woman. Any woman with a reasonably stable source of income and place to live (no matter how much better the man's situation is) will always win if neither party does anything. It's up to the man to fight for his child, the woman has to do nothing except halfheartedly refute what the man says in order to gain majority custody.
[–]truthserum23 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The family law system is so blatantly screwed up and lopsided. It doesn't even take a conspiracy theorist or a cynic to understand the inequality in the system. Reading stories such as the one above makes me think that in order for the family law judges and lawyers to be profitable, it is imperative for them to create a challenge for the higher earner in order to get what is rightfully theirs (their child), thereby creating work and profit. If the default decision was equal custody in situations without abuse, etc., then the family law system would not be able to bill for hours spent on providing the proof and justification that both parents should have equal access to their children. Not only are women (or lesser earners) using their children as weapons, the family law system is using children as ransom.

Don't feel bad. My wife had an affair with an abusive Middle-Eastern doctor. Her parents supported my side in the custody case, and after a $30k battle, we still lost.
Why? Because according to the female evaluator, her relationship was so bad and abusive, that it could never last. It went on three more years.
You saved yourself a lot of headache and money.
[–]HumbleEgg 212 points213 points214 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
I... what? How does that make sense at all? She was in a relationship that wouldn't last, and thus should have full custody?
[–]m3sarcher 134 points135 points136 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

[–]m3sarcher 83 points84 points85 points 9 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link
In this state, it was and still is practically automatic for the women to get custody if they refuse joint custody. And why would they when they can win and get full child support? I applaud states which now have forced joint custody, unless parent is proven unfit.
Edit: more explanation... The evaluator and everyone else knew he was no good, and had a reputation as such. The evaluator assumed it was so bad, that she would eventually leave him behind and be free and clear to raise the kids. It was flawed reasoning because two or three dismal relationships followed, until she found her current husband, who is a good guy. But what a mess, I did probably 60% of the parenting before and it all made no sense other than she was the mom.
[–]theboyblue 27 points28 points29 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Why should someone have to pay child support if the wife left them, is with a DOCTOR (after cheating). I'm sure they should be fully able to support the child, no?
[–]rwwman50 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Bingo
[–]m3sarcher 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Child support in this state is not based on what the custodial parent is worth or makes. She could have married Bill Gates or won the lottery, and I'd be paying the same. It is solely based on the non-custodial parent's income.
Edit: I understand the reasoning, which is if you have kids you need to support them. I get that. Some fathers give up and quit working because it can be a catch-22. You need to make more to cover your expenses, taxes go up and then child support gets reviewed and goes up, requiring you to make more etc.
[–]WaltonGogginsTeeth 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I saw next year in Illinois it does take into account the custodial parents income in 2017.
[–]m3sarcher 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is fantastic and a great step forward. Other states will eventually follow. The pendulum swung from too far one direction to too far the opposite direction. Hopefully it settles in fair middle ground.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I'm not saying it's right (in fact I think it's really wrong), but their logic is that because she's in a relationship the children will have 2 parents around all the time which they think is more healthy for the kids. Also, the man will be bringing in money so they think it's a better household for the child to be in. Really dumb the way they go about these things, it makes me angry.
[–]jfk1000 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Did you read the comment? The argument was, that the relashionship was NOT going to last, because of its abusive nature.
[–]GateauBaker 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He means they're thinking short-term and couldn't care less about the child's future.
Nope, that was not the thinking. It was that it was so abusive, that it would not last and then she would be free of him to raise our kids.
Money was not the concern as she is a nurse practitioner, and also receives $1400/mo from me for child support. Meanwhile, I was working second jobs, finding paying roommates etc to make ends meet.
Anyway, in the end I met up with a high school sweetheart, and life now is great. My relationship with my kids is good, but I still don't see them as much as I would like.
[–]fowlraul 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I get and thank you. I just hope my kid will get it when it's time to explain.
[–]Fufenheim 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What does him being Middle-Eastern have to do with it though?
Maybe nothing. He was abusive to his wife who divorced him previously. But the reason I mentioned it has more to do with how women are treated in general by men that part of the world. Perhaps throwing him in that group is unfair, but his actions did not prove otherwise. If you think women are treated fairly there, then you may need to do a little more research.
[–]altmehere 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
So I also feel like an ass for not trying...which is nice.
I certainly don't blame you and others like you for not wasting a great deal of their resources fighting a battle you're almost certain to lose.
It is sad that the statistics are used to say that men give up on custody battles in the majority of cases causing a feedback loop where men don't contest because they don't win and the courts favor women because of the lower rates at which men fight for custody. No amount of action at an individual level is going to break that loop, because of all the men who simply can't afford it at all.
And unfortunately, I think the same lack of concern for men as a group make it unlikely that those with the power to do something about it will do anything.
[–]factbasedorGTFO 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
My ex was weird, I found out over time that if I didn't fight her in the courts, I'd eventually end up with full custody.
After years of being the primary caregiver, I go to court and end up with visitation for a couple hours on two days of the week + every other weekend.
Of course that was while we awaited a final court date, but I soon learned that the tactic of her attorney was to delaydelaydelay.
[–]altmehere 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I know it's cynical, but that just seems like a ploy not only to keep that favorable arrangement as long as possible, but to make it so that the precedent is her rather than you being the primary caregiver.
[–]factbasedorGTFO 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
The daughters working for the most successful family law attorney in my area worked for me, then later, I had a 7 year relationship with one of them.
He trained mine and my exes attorney, and delaying was a tactic he used when his side didn't have the better arguments or situation.
His line used to be "Do you want to be nice, or do you want to win?"
My exes attorney was well known for being a cunt. She'd try to make the other side angry before they'd go in to court, and she had no volume control on her voice. If she was having a conversation with my ex in the courtyard, I could hear every word.
Another odd thing about my case, is all arguing was behind closed doors without me or my ex present. Just the judge and our attorneys.
Long story short, I ended up raising my kids by myself without any child support. They're now 27 and 23 years old.
I and my kids still have to deal with BS from her and/or her latest husband from time to time, sometimes it never ends in these situations.
[–]Shanguerrilla 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How does the two days a week and every other weekend work?
That sounds a lot like what I got worked out and I'm pretty happy about it, it makes it completely 50/50 custody.. Like every week one parent gets them Monday 3pm to Wednesday 3pm. The other parent Wednesday 3pm to Friday 3pm. And alternating weekends...
So were you able to get 50/50, because it sounded like that was what you were describing?
[–]factbasedorGTFO 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The two days are something like 3PM to 7PM or some shit like that.

Don't feel bad for not trying after that. Unfortunately it's the luck of the draw with most judges, and it's absolutely wrong that we're deciding children's lives based on how one judge happens to feel on any particular day or how he or she feels about your haircut or the tie you wore. We all know the system is biased against us and there's not much we can really do about it, especially without a lot of money. It's fucked and it's not your fault.
[–]32BitWhore 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JBObie 29 points30 points31 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm a son who's parents divorced when I was eight. Obviously I never understood what was truly happening. As the last twelve years went by, I started to piece together the puzzle. My Mom was totally in the wrong, cheating on another man, wanting to take my sister and I away from our Father, stuff like that. My dad handle it as best he could, in court and otherwise. In the end, he lost, getting to see us every Thursday, and every other weekend. Other than the cheating, she wasn't a bad person. Now I'm wondering why it wasn't 50/50, or as close to it as possible. Today, I'm best friends with my dad. I live a few states away, but any time I have a break from college, I go see him. Just thought I should share and tell everyone to hang in there.
[–]the_unseen_one 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I feel the same. My mom had to practically force my dad to take me every other weekend, and he refused increased visitation, let alone 50/50 custody. It's heartening to see so many men in these comments fighting to stay in their children's' lives.

My dad lost all custody of my sister (I'm 22 and she's 9). He was/is a shitty person and I don't think he deserved full custody or even half, but he should be in her life somewhat. When he lost all means of contact he really went off the deep end. He was a handsome and smart guy (despite his character faults) before all of this but now he's obese, unemployed, living in his moms basement, addicted to both alcohol and oxy, and completely insane. I saw him on thanksgiving and he doesn't even remember me coming over. It's a fucking shame, really.
Sorry for you losing your custody battle, though. I've seen first hand what it can do to someone and I don't think there's all that many fathers who deserve to be stripped of their child's life. I wish you and your child the best.

I'm going to say something in regards to this and it's going to be real easy to take it the wrong way. I'm not directing this at you, probably.
My brother in law is the only brother I've ever known and I love him to death. Recently I exiled him from my life. He's a TERRIBLE person, a HORRIBLE father, and was an ABUSIVE husband. (One time came in high on meth and took the shotgun and just went around the house firing it indiscriminately with his kids home)
He might have a Reddit account. He might be called the lovable Misogynist, I don't know. I know he would say those exact words even though he never tried to be a part of his kids lives at all.
Point being, there are some shit face people in this world and 99% don't know when it's them.
I have another friend who used to beat his wife (badly) and is all the time on Facebook talking about how there's no good women left and how men are savages because there's no real women left in the world. If you bring up that maybe it's him that's the issue, he's ready to fight. Equally obtuse individual.
That being said, when it happens to good men, it fills me with an inconsolable rage and I don't even have kids. I also know it happens ALOT.
Hope your life gets better, brochacho

God, I feel your pain. I hope you are better, or at least, found some consolation. I am fighting for VACATIONS with my children abroad with the mother, 12 weeks out of the year, and have to fight this family and friends attitude that I am destroying her motherhood. What about my fucking relationship with my kids? Hobbies are not hobbies anymore, is sanity medicine.

So sorry to hear that. I too fought hard for for several years and was lucky. For the 50% time they were with me they got; bed time stories and hugs, clean clothes, regular healthy meals, and much needed respite from the black hole vortex of narcissistic emotional drama that is their mother.
I don't even have kids and this filled me with rage. There's a whole complete lack of consideration for another side because they're too focused on one side. "it'd be terrible if mommy didn't have her children!" Yeah, well I guess daddy doesn't have feelings and doesn't want his kids so that makes perfect sense...
[–]MercenaryOfTroy 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My uncle is going through something similar and only got one weekend a month. His only hope of getting to see his kid is if she goes to jail. It's just sad.
The worse thing is that he has had a stable job for the past 5 years and she is living off government money while being wanted in at least 2 states... There is something broken here.

I do not have children, but I feel the sympathy for you. All the men who actually got their shit together, have a great career and look forward to nothing more than being a father to their children. Then the court system gets involved and turns these men into "the father that was never there for me" to a lot of kids.

The context here is that the Daily Mail is into "traditional" family values and that would include the Mother being preferred as the primary carer for children. The idea of "having it all ways" doesn't really play because the trade off is defined gender roles -- "homemaker" etc.

Feminists claim being forced to have sole custody is misogyny and horribly oppressive to women.

Some friends of mine have encountered so many issues with this,
He is a Software architect, she is a teacher specialised in early childhood education.
The decided she would stay at home and look after their daughter when she was born (and cook and clean, etc)
So many folks they know have criticised them, accused him of being a misogynist, criticised her for "letting down the side" and all that sort of stuff...
When in fact, A) she is an expert in early childhood education, so who better to be looking after their daughter,
B) the childcare costs are such, that if she was out working full time 5 days a week, the cost of childcare would eat 4 of those days, the net effect would have been negligible from a financial standpoint,
their daughter probably wouldn't be doing so fantastically as she is, they would have probably had to rehome their dogs, and it would have reduced their entire families quality of life.

It stopped being equality once first and maybe second wave feminism wasn't needed anymore. Women have the same opportunities as men now and it's their fault for choosing gender studies over bio-engineering and then complaining about being paid less. Now it's just a "I hate men since they don't like me and I want to blame someone else for all my problems" group.

It was never about equality. Social movements aren't about equality. They never are and they never were. A social movement, whether it's men's rights, feminism, black liberty, whatever, is always defined by a drive for power and better circumstances. This has been inherently true since the dawn of time.
What causes a movement to succeed is when it's an equalizing effort, since the collective power of a monolithic group is never as great as the collective power of the rest of society. It's only when society agrees that the shift of power is uniformly beneficial and joins in on the movement that it rises to prominence and eventually succeeds.
The problem is that this kind of social progressivism has become socially valuable ("feminists are good people") and useful as a tool of social assassination ("you're a feminist or you're a bad person") which has perverted the dynamics. Combined with the power of the internet as a networking tool, groups that should never exist reach sufficient popularity to sustain themselves while other groups decline much more slowly than they should.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The fringe groups of feminism have taken over the mainstream version of it. The goal of many self-proclaimed feminists now seems to be getting back at men.
Looks like it's time to pack up and move to egalitarianism, I did.

'Horribly oppressive to women' - there. They get/claim custody and then post on Facebook how totally brave and hard it is to be a single mom. [–]HumbleEgg 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I, uh, what? Patriarchy refers to a society/community/whathaveyou led by males. Many animals have patriarchal structures, for example. In human gender politics it generally refers to men being the leaders by default in whatever situations related to the discussion. So it cannot refer to equality anyway. The feminine equivalent would be matriarchy. Did you mean masculinity?

[–]HumbleEgg 101 points102 points103 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Although I agree we shouldn't be taking the Daily Mail seriously anyway, I wanna copy /u/geekygirl23's response from earlier up in the thread:
During the school year weekend access is equal to more time with your kids than all of the weekday hours combined. This is especially true for working parents. You also miss most of the extracurricular stuff. It's hard to figure out fair custody between parents but calling the weekend "half the time" isn't out of line. Would you be happy if the husband had access to all hours the kids spend sleeping / bathing / in school and she got the rest?
[–]BowieBlueEye 34 points35 points36 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
I'm female so I'm not completely one way or the other. In my opinion the parent who can provide the best care and environment for the children should have custody, regardless of gender.
I see what you mean about term time but that still leaves 13 weeks holiday a year in the UK. If you do the maths and say 12 hours a day is the time spent with a child on a non school day and 5 on a school day that means that the holiday time works out to be;
Mother:
5 days x 12 hours = 60 hours per week 60 hours x 13 weeks = 780 hours over holidays
Father:
2 days x 12 hours = 24 hours per week 24 hours x 13 weeks = 312 hours over holidays.
Adding this to term time;
5 hours x 5 days = 25 hours per week 25 hours x 39 weeks = 975 hours in term time
Father: 12 hours x 2 days = 24 hours per week 24 hours x 39 weeks = 936 hours in term time.
So with a strict 5:2 arrangement the mother spends 1,755 with the children and the father spends 1,248 hours.
I'm really bad at maths and only doing this to put off doing my assignment. The maths is probably completely wrong and, obviously, I haven't any basis for my figures, I've just plucked them out of my ass.
[–]burnerman0 27 points28 points29 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
As a child, my parents and I tried a few different custody arrangements: * Split during week, alternating weekends * Alternating weeks * Dad during week, mom weekends; alternate weeks during summer
That last one is what we settled on for a good chunk of my childhood. It was fair time-wise, and I think it was the best arrangement for me, but my father was left feeling like he didn't get much quality time with me, and my mother felt like she didnt see me often enough. While both had their complaints, I really like the schedule because it kept things a lot more stable, and put me with my dad during the school week, who was more engaged in my education.
[–]Ridry 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're very lucky. It sounds like they were open to experimenting and willing to listen to your input, which is great. My friends daughter just proposed a new custody arrangement and they both were willing to try it. I find that so refreshing. I feel like the only thing harder than missing your parents and bouncing around must be the lack of control for kids whose parents can't with together or won't listen to the child.
[–]Ayn_Rand_Was_Right 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Damn I feel really lucky for my childhood. My parents were best friends before and after marriage, so they stuck together until my sister graduated high school. The courts still made my dad pay child support, even though he lived in the same house with us.
[–]mray147 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I grew up in a true 50/50 custody. I would spend one week with my mom and one with my dad. Every Sunday at 6pm whoever I was with that week would drop me off at the other house. Honestly, it was the best route to take for us. I consider myself lucky that they settled on true 50/50.

I consider myself a feminist, but I completely support a more balanced response in divorce on pretty much every level. Men should be seen as equals when it comes to parenting, and there are very few scenarios where I agree with alimony and supporting a spouse's "lifestyle". Not all feminists are like the loud and obnoxious crowd, and most women I know agree with changing the way this has been done in the past.
[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 30 points31 points32 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
That's fine but understand the feminists who are actually enacting policy are very much opposed to shared custody.
[–]Eos42 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I am aware and I think it is wrong, which is why I support this sub because I think part of the problem is many women are a bit unaware of legislation that groups like NOW have opposed and blindly back groups because "feminism". I just disagree with many of the blanket generalizations because beginning a discussion with antagonism isn't helpful to creating awareness and detracts from valid points. People tend to just ignore important issues when they feel personally attacked, but putting things like this article out there, and the reasoning people like NOW give would do a lot more in my opinion to change these organizations or instill new ones that are more than just parodies of equality.
[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I view it kinda like Republicans who oppose Trump and the tea party types: ok but they're the face of your movement. Maybe join a different movement and stop calling yourself that since it has diverged from what you believe.
[–]worldspawn00 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
The thing is, Republican is a group of people with a broad range of idologies, there's no static definition of a republican, but feminist is defined as someone who fights for equality of the sexes, it's the nutjobs who claim they are feminist in violation of the definition who are the problem.
It's like if a oil mogul claimed he was an environmentalist while approving fracking projects in the name of saving the environment, and now you're saying to the treehuggers that they shouldn't call themselves environmentalists because that one guy who definitely isn't one is using the title.

[–]ThatsNotHowEconWorks 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
eh, being a republican means very different things to different people and being a feminist means very different things to different people too. if anything the republicans have an official platform that is democratically proscribed and feminism is an amorphous cultural movement.

Here is the original.
The whole article is infuriating. I'm a 50/50 dad, and the road to getting that was a rough one.
Thankfully, it wasn't an expensive ride through the court system; just the threat of it was enough. She was always a horrible mother to the children during our marriage. Very neglectful, and uncaring. When she decided to play hide-the-sausage with one of our friends, and ended our marriage she initially told me that she wanted full custody of the kids and I could have them, "whenever." In essence, she wanted me as a free and glorified babysitter instead of a father.
For the first few weeks of the separation, the kids' lives were in chaos. They wouldn't know who was picking them up from school, where they were sleeping that night...and I didn't until the day she wanted me to pick them up. I asked for a schedule but I guess that was stalking or or something because she refused to let me know when she would be working and I would have to take the kids.
So, I took matters in my own hands and when I got the kids home from school, I called her up and said, "Look, the kids are staying with me until you figure shit out. So, here are your choices: I get them full time, you go play like you're 18 again and fuck every guy in town that you see, or you step up, and we split 50/50. The only other way is that we go to court and let the courts decide out of the two of us who is the most fit parent. If you can't agree to that, then they will be here with me."
After a few days of moping and crying from the mother she finally called and said, "What am I supposed to do about a babysitter?" I told her that it was her problem. She made the mess, so she had to figure out her own shit. I offered to be there for the kids if they needed me when they were with her.
She is still a horrible mother to them. Not abusive; just towing the line for what a "care-provider" does: giving them food, clothes, shelter. But they live without structure or discipline in her house which I see on their faces when they come through the door on Mondays. She wonders why our son is so disruptive, and why the teachers complain about her behaviour. The teachers have approached me too, and I said, "Just watch the pattern. Look at his good weeks versus his bad weeks, and get back to me when you notice." Sure enough, a few weeks later I'm told, "He's so different when he's with you! There are moments, but we can correct them."
What's really heartbreaking as a father is there's nothing I can do about it. Not without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars, not to mention the days loss of work, battling it out in the courts, only to find that she's manipulated the courts enough (which she is good at doing...she fooled a psychologist when she was 14 into thinking that she was coping with her father's death in a normal way...which she wasn't, she confessed that she really didn't care about his death, sure she was sad, but she got over it in days after he passed; only once in our relationship did she ever visit her father's grave, and that was because I insisted on going and paying my respects to him). My lawyer even told me, "You would probably save money by letting it run its course, and going through psychiatrists when they finally decide to stay with you full time."
It's heartbreaking being a 50/50 dad. They are with her for Father's day, and in the 6 years we've been separated, not once did they call. I, too, have cried my eyes out walking past their bedrooms, and wondered were they sleeping soundly in their own beds and having pleasant dreams.

It's obviously a thinly veiled political article, but I would say it's designed to be pro men's rights if anything.
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Definitely. The Daily Mail does this thing all the time. They'll put out an article saying something like "We found a teacher who thinks children are annoying little monsters and should be disciplined unless they are silent at all times! Don't you feel bad for her?" knowing full well most of their readerbase will be angry at the teacher and spread the article as outrage porn to their friends.

[–]Thompson_S_Sweetback 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It varies by court. In Texas, and only Texas, custody issues are determined by a jury. We represented a father who won primary custody. He was an extremely good client - an elementary school teacher who had stuck to a strict 50/50 custody arrangement prior to the trial.
Also, the mother was as cartoonishly bad as the one in this article. She testified that she should be entitled to child support even though they had been splitting costs and custody 100% equally.
[–]stemgang 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Ah, I see he won primary custody. A rare victory.
[–]Thompson_S_Sweetback 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He won joint custody with exclusive right to determine residence. Ironically, they still split the kids almost 50/50, but now she has 25% less in her paycheck.
[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
That's not what I'm saying at all. Just pointing out what this article is intended to do, find an unintelligent person who serves as an extreme example concerning a facet of a divisive social issue and act sympathetic to it while clearly hoping it generates outrage clicks. This is Daily Mail's bread and butter.

I'm a lucky man...
...in NY State, back in 1997, I got half custody, immediately, so that my sons, ages 11, 9 and 6 at the time, would spend one week at my house then one week at hers.
Eventually I got full custody of all three: the oldest first when he was 12, and the others came when they hit 13.
In a way I feel bad for their mother... But then, when I think through all the Hell that she put us all through, for no other reason than selfishness, I guess you reap what you sow. (Sometimes. I know other men out there weren't as lucky.)

Doesn't anyone think about what the children want? Poor kids.
I'm a woman, who raised my son, pretty much by myself until my son was 11. My ex -husband and I just didn't work out as spouses, so we split but are still friends today. It was my son's desire to live with Dad for various reasons (money, getting closer, friends). I respected that and thought about it logically and talked to my son and share parenting with my ex-husband. I pay child support and insurance and I get him whenever I want. As a parent we must put our selfish needs aside and make sacrifices if need be, the best we can, to ensure our children grow up healthy, happy, and morally sound.
[–]BarryOakTree 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Speaking as a child of divorce, putting aside selfish needs is not a common trend. I felt like my parents were fighting tooth and nail for me just to screw each other over and all I wanted to do was be left alone.

My dad is a divorce lawyer and I went to watch 1 day of one of the more interesting trials where the parents were in different states and custody had to be set and the mother was a huge bitch and everyone was made to see that. In the end she won and 2 of the jurors when asked why they decided that was said " she really wasn't that bad of a mother" meaning it was just assumed mom would have the children unless dad was super fucked up since the kids were so young. The lady was a huge bitch towards her husband on the stand on got caught saying different facts for previous hearings more than a dozen times. But no children should be with the mother when they are young right?

Is this saying only woman suffer? Men who have feelings are weak, unless you are a feminist snowflake, then it's an accepted, but EXPECTED weakness among your kind.
This is why men should NOT get married. With the current failure rates, it's a statistical losing bet for men and the price can be devastating financially and emotionally. The woman you believe that loves you can turn on a dime and rip your soul out by the roots. Zero empathy. Complete and total self absorption, a black hole unto themselves.

I don't get it, the article is discussing a mother that has her children 5 out of 7 days a week isn't it? That's hardly 50/50 childcare and isn't really a completely new thing. 20 years ago, when I was a kid, this seemed to be a common set up for kids with divorced parents. It's not equal and shouldn't be set that way purely based on gender.
I really feel courts should have to make their decisions based on 'Parent A' and 'Parent B' rather than 'mother' and 'father'. So many custody arrangements are biased in the Mothers favour, even if it's clear that the father can provide a more stable and happy environment.

This makes me sick. There are way too many cunts that use their children as weapons against their father. In the long run the ones that suffer most are the kids.
My ex and I divorced last year after 14 yrs of marriage. We share a 12 year old son. We don't do child support or visitation, we just both split expenses and do our share to take care of him as equally as possible. The better he (my ex) and I get along the happier our son is, that's what matters most. I don't understand why a mother would want to keep a child away from a father that wants to be an active part of their life. I think my ex is a way better mother than me most of the time. As a husband I'd give him a C, but as a dad I'd rate him an A+.
I hate that this exists. My mother and my husband's mother both got custody of us when we were kids (separate families, same results). BOTH of our mothers spent every last dime of child support on going to the bar, buying clothes, and neither of us had new clothing or even food half the time.
This is an equal rights issue that should be recognized and made right immediately. Parents should bear equal responsibility, not full-time child support and weekend visitation!
The audacity of the publishers to be so demeaning with this click-bait headline! The way some parents make a divorce all about themselves and their victimhood (like being a divorced woman suddenly makes them a victim of everything) is outrageous and disgusting.

I've never had to deal with this. This article is infuriating, and dumb. It is the daily mail. However I think the whole scenario is unfair to the kids. As a father if this was my situation there would be no 50/50. There would be no way I would make them change schools and back just to accommodate me or my ex. This is where you two need to act like the adults you're suppose to be. One could have for the school year the other could take for the summer. You could work out in-between about holidays if you wanted. It's not about you or your ex, its about the well being of the kids. If you don't get that, then maybe you shouldn't be parenting.

I took a look at the actual article. And I, no joke, genuinely do not know if this is serious. It has to be satirical, sarcastic, trolling/baiting, an inside joke -- I have a hard time believing that a writer of this big a newspaper lacks the basic intelligence needed to realize the hypocrisy. Women are poor victims for losing their kids half the time but fathers aren't.
I really don't know if this shit is serious.

Wow. Sad. When my parents split, my mom got my two sisters and my dad got me.
Whenever I would mention to people that my parents were divorced and I lived with my dad people would always respond "Wow! Really!? What's wrong with your mom!?" then sometimes go into some diatribe about how it usually only happens that way if the mom's a crack-whore or something.
[–]IndyDude11 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This exact thing happened to me. A change in my job allowed me to take on extra time with the kids. Before this point I had only been getting to see the kids every other weekend because of my job. The first time she had to go 6 days without seeing the kids she went fucking apeshit.

Key word equal. It's just as hard for a father to cope with only seeing his kids half the time as well. Plus it takes to to tango so it should be 50/50 if there is a custody battle. Kids need a father and mother figure in there lives growing up.
Fuck this 'journalist' in particular.

How about people stop getting divorced and ruining their family for themselves and their children. All parties involved would be happier, even if you still don't like your spouse.
Yes, some people are in extreme physically abusive relationships and need to get away, but that's not the case in the vast majority of divorces.
[–]Borthwick 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The lack of self awareness women display is just absolutely staggering.
I knew 1984/Animal Farm was real, but the snippets I thought were a bit contrived (some animals are equal, but others are more equal) would come along under a more palatable guise.
Nope. Straight up all humans are equal but women are more equal.

She still asks once in awhile if we could switch to me getting the kid only every other weekend, like I would ever fucking consider that.

[–]CalamitousD 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'll never understand why the mother is always default in these cases. I've seen so many where the father was clearly trying harder, and cared more, but it didn't matter because they weren't the one to give birth.
So disheartening.

My ex-husband and I agreed on 50/50 custody and visitation, and while I honestly do miss the milestones and time with her, my daughter is thriving spending time with us both equally and that is what matters. Custody and visitation should never be about the parents, it should be about the kids.

I was lucky enough that my daughters mother just sign her rights over to me. I didn't have to go to court. Her mother knew she would never win anyway, and I always maintained that I was simply seeking custody for the sake of our daughter, that I had no intention of "taking her" from her. I just needed to be the provider, the protector, the functioning parent. As much as I do not like my daughters mother, it's still my daughters mother so I NEVER speak badly of her, never air out problems in front of my daughter. My daughter gets to see her mother quite often, even though I don't have to let her. It's not my daughters fault her mom can't get her life right, even though my daughter is 9 now. I just take every day in stride, see how her mom is doing in life and that is how I decide how and when my daughter sees her mom. Her mom is supposed to pay child support, but doesn't have money so I don't bother to go after her. Some people say I should, but she has a younger child (not from me) to which she had custody of and I fear I would take what little money she does have out of that child's mouth. I'm doing fine without her finances, so why battle that? I didn't have a kid to gain more money. I just want my daughter to be happy, and decide how she feels about her mother when she is able to understand why her mom was away all the time. I don't know if I'm doing it right, but my daughter is very happy and still knows she has 2 parents who love her.
I showed this to my wife and she said "What the fuck?!"

Fuck this.
My dad got 100% custody because my mum was a Coke addict and ditched us to move back to the US when I was 5 (about 6 months after coming home.)
She went on to marry a "plumber" from Compton that she met through a prison pen pal scheme. Meanwhile my dad went on to stop being a plumber, became an estate agent (top 5% nationwide at one point) and married my beautiful step-mum.
I know which was the better life.
Boo hoo.
My mom was a wretched woman. At my parent's divorce she kicked out my dad, gave him around $2k and told him to hit the road. She made over $150k/year and was supporting the family fine until that point. My dad scored a great job in cancer research and started doing well for himself, so she brought the court into it and he began paying child support to her. Not because she needed it but because she wanted it. One day I called up my dad and asked if he wanted me to come live with him, so I packed up my shit and left. I didn't want to deal with that psycho, and I missed my dad. Fuck this article.

On a more positive, note, the article is receiving a lot of backlash from Daily Mail itself. It's worth noting that these articles represent the writer's opinions. I hope the Daily Mail does something and fire that insane person though, that's the minimum they should do, but then again, they're more worried about generating clicks than anything else, so we might not see that happen

I was on the short end until I got custody of my daughter in 2014, and my ex actually took the same stance trying to convince me i had no idea how hard it is. In custody cases, decisions should be made in the eyes of the children. Mothers have to share half the children's time with their EXES?! This is not about you! It's about the children. And it's not an EX for the children, it's their father.
Saw this from /r/all
50/50 dad I can tell you the children are not crying out for mommy. They are fine.
In fact, they weren't crying out for mommy when there were 100% with me (spoiler: no she didn't pay me support). If the kids are happy, they're fine either way. It's when the parents cause shit that the kids are unhappy.
Stop creating drama and fucking with your kids, you crazy fucks.
[–]sooohungover 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This actually makes me angry. My mother is bipolar and my parents divorced when i was 5 and my sister 3. My father tried to get custody several times and it was traumatic for my sister and I. My father was farrr more capable of taking care of us as my mother laid in bed all day and had a string of strangers and shitty boyfriends coming through the house without going into to much detail. I was afriad to leave her because I knew she was unstable and worried what would happen to her if we left. My sister didnt want to leave me, so when I had some creepy custody consular ask me point blank where I felt more at home I didn't know what to say. Long story short the consular told the court I wanted to stay with my mother, I was maybe 10, I had no idea what was in my best interest. The court gave custody to my mother because of this prejudice when my father was clearly more capable of providing a stable environment. Im doing fine at 26 now, but I deal with a lot of aniexty and depression that may have been lessened growing up in a more stable home. Fathers deserve to be givin a fair shot in these matters and the idea that a mother is always a better parent is total bullshit and completely unfair to men trying to win custody of their children for good reason.

Trust me the kids are never "crying out for mommy." They are most likely enjoying their time with their father. That doesn't mean they don't enjoy time with their mother. When they're with their mother, they will enjoy being with you.
Despite what a controlling mother might think, childern love BOTH their parents, especially if both their parents are kind and caring. I'm sure the father enjoys having the children over every other week.
One of my best friends is in a 50/50 relationship lile this. Her parents split because of disagreements, but they are ADULTS. They still talk to each other, and my friend loves both her parents.

I don't get how they can think it's healthy to not have both parents involved in the children's lives.

It's this shit bias that almost made my father lose custody of my little brother. I was old enough to choose but my brother was not and the judge did everything in my mother's favor which pissed me off. She was abusive, she beat me unconscious at least twice a week and the judge was just going to hand my little brother over to her because he didn't believe me that she was that bad.
He had no choice but to revoke her rights to custody when she got caught hiring a hitman to kill my father and I. It should NEVER have to be such an extreme for a father to have rights to his kids. The kids suffer greatly under this bias and it needs to fucking stop.

Oh for fuck's sake. My mother fought very hard to keep me away from my dad. I spent the majority of my life swaddled and sheltered, and any attempts at trying to connect with him and/or other paternal figures was only met with harsh punishment via wooden cooking spoons and nights of her crying and yelling at me for 'betraying' her.
Raising a child alone is ok if that's what it comes down to, but don't penalize your child's mental/emotional growth by keeping them away from their other parent (assuming the parent isn't a criminal or insane), it's not a fucking coincidence evolution asked for a woman and man to have a child together.
