People sometimes assume that history is moving in a straight line: that we used to be conservative and we'll be moving in a more progressive direction until we reach the ultimate utopian goal.

However, if you look at history it's mostly circular , especially in regards to sexual morality. For example, the Georgian era was known for its (relative) sexual liberation while the Victorian era that followed was known for its sexual prudishness. Some periods were just more sexually libertarian than others.

I believe that sexual morality has become so complicated and impossible to navigate that we'll be soon seeing a return to conservative sexuality. We're literally just two steps away from the Victorian idea that men are perverts who "corrupt" young women, that sex is a corrupting force for the soul etc.

Some examples about why sexuality has become complicated:

a) very confusing messaging about when it's appropriate to approach women..some will outright tell you that approaching women on the streets or at gym or at work is harassment, even if you are very respectful. This leaves minimal options to meet people outside of dating apps.

b) retroactively removing consent. If a woman consents to sex but had a bad experience, it's not just a bad experience anymore, it's s*xual assault or at the very minimum the man is labeled a creep (like the Aziz Ansari situation).

c) Popularization of the idea that casual sex is bad for women ( see Louise Perry's work or even the FDS narrative that women should have sex after dating for two months)

d) Regular male sexuality seen as perverted and "wrong". (This idea is more conservative than you think)

e) Women expecting to be courted, saying that coffee dates are cheap and that the man should plan some fancy, expensive first date. What happened to equality? Why can't women plan the first date ?
