Clarifications of Terms

  • Product: it comes *because* of having a good relationship
  • Prerequiste: you need it in order to have a good relationship (i.e. no good relationship can be sexless)

Obviously, this is a personal question with no right or wrong answers. I will share how I feel and why I ask but I want to put a disclaimer that I don't hate or want to shame people for their needs in a relationship.

Growing up, it has been drilled in my head that sex is necessary in a relationship between men and women. This focus has primarily been because men need sex to be happy, or so I was told and am constantly being told now. I have built this inherent bias towards men that they are sex-driven, erogo no matter how kind and amazing they are they will never want to be in a relationship that doesn't have sex. This has made sex feel like an obligation for me, something that I need to do in order to have a happy relationship; I cannot have other things without it.

I have been trying to unlearn this. I have been healing from sexual trauma and removing this feeling of obligation. I know that women also like sex and want/need it and that it isn't a "gross man thing" but I still have a fear that I will not be worth anything good in a relationship if I don't put out. Thankfully this isn't how my current partner feels and there is genuinely no pressure from him. He relates to the discomfort of feeling like he has to have sex in order to make a woman happy, so both of us feel comfortable saying "no" or making sure the other enthusiastically consents rather than concedes. Both of us would be happy in a relationship that would be sexless, so long as there were other forms of physical intimacy.

Without the obligation, I have been able to learn more about how I feel about sex, namely that:

  1. it is a result of a good, healthy, intimate relationship; if I don't feel like we have that bond or something is shaking us, I don't want to be touched in that way;
  2. it is one tool in a big tool box of intimacy, and frankly to me it is one that's just fun to use but not particularly useful;
  3. most of the times I have had sex or did anything sexual, it was to earn love or worth or anything else but it was rarely ever about the act itself (which I'm not sure is healthy since it's tied to the obligatory feeling)

I know that men are not a monolith and that other men probably feel similarly to my partner, but sometimes I fear that if he and I ever break up I'll have to go back to feeling like it's an obligation or pre-requisite. I'd love to here everyone's thoughts on here about it.
