Unfortunately this is simply due to men as a group having an all encompassing attraction to women, people will try to make arguments like women putting more effort on looks, But this actually goes right along with this truth because the reason women do that is because they have such a smaller range of attraction to men that they must adhere to their self imposed race for looks to appeal to those same few men they can be attracted to.

Men only have one metric which they are measured on, and its much more difficult to achieve and more genetically influenced, if not totally predetermined, than any that women are up against.. and that is - being tall and built.

Tallness aside (as there is nothing anyone can do about that), just developing an idealic 6 pack, chest and V tapered back in terms of the gritting exercises and discipline of diet and sleep and cutting through all the crap advice out there for years and years, is unspeakably more difficult than a daily sprinkling of make up, dressing nice and scampering on a treadmill for 20 mins and a bit of yoga twice a week.

I fear you may be misunderstanding.

On the whole I think women put more EFFORT into their appearances before going out, that's why you'd see a nicely-dressed woman at the mall with her homeless-looking husband.

It's not about how much better she looks than he does in terms of face-shape and body built and such, it's how much better put-together she appears than he does.

Women notice such things, I think that's why a woman might be more likely to comment on a passing couple, "how come she is with that frump?"

I've also seen short vids where women complain (mildly frustrated sort of way, not divorce immediately sort of way) that she took a long time getting all nice and dressed up for a date with her partner while he just shows up...in yesterday's clothes, something like that.

I think the assumption that makeup and fashion makes women 'more attractive' is flawed, since makeup doesnt necessarily make a woman more attractive unless you already think it does, and this logic of makeup better a person isnt applied to men, who can also just wear makeup to 'be more attractive' but theyre not expected or encouraged to.

Also the idea that womens beauty standards arent as high as mens is pretty absurd when you consider how much abuse 'unattractive' women get for their looks (particularly fat and/or hairy women), how degrading a lot of beauty standards for women are, and how much time, effort, money, and hits to ones self esteem comes from women's socialized 'compulsion' to mask their faces every day, and fit a restrictive beauty standards in their niche communities.

Ive definitely heard of ridicule against women about being too pale ('sickly' looking), too fat, and too thin.

Fat women often get poor treatment for literally taking up more space, and being deemed disgusting, lazy, ugly, and trashy. Fatphobia affects both sexes but definitely uniquely affects women. Fat women are portayed in media as either a comedic relief or as the butt of joke. And many anti-feminist stereotypes depict feminists as fat, which is seen as a degrading, hedonistic, and unattractive body type. I think this comes from fatphobia in society moreso than women 'allowed' to be fat.

Goth women expected to look pale because thats the subculture's standard lol. Goth is associated with subversion of european christain/catholic themes of purity (depicted as paleness), and 'pagan' themes of the occult, ghosts, and aesthetics of vampirism. Both sexes are expected to look pale in the goth scene for this reason.

And slim womem, while seen as having idyllic forms in western societies, are sometimes treated with ridicule for looking sickly as well, especially since many women who arent genetically predisposioned as petite self harm to achieve a gaunt and even skeletal form (anorexia notoriously overrepresents women and girls because of this beauty standard, for instance). Even thinner women sometimes compain that they are uncomfortable with recieving praise for something they didnt 'do' or arent proud of and limits them physically; like being treated more fairly than regular or overweight peers feels wrong, and when people compliment their thinner size as a virtue, Ive seen them say theres not many advantages since its harder to find fitting clothing, theyre weaker and less physically that way, and might be getting praise for hurting themselves

Skinny men definitely get ridiculed as well, particular about standards to be strong, but in a fatphobic society, their thinness doesnt seem to be as ridiculed anymore than of skinny women.

The idea of who is 'thicc' only represent a specific body type of women, as well. Only women who fit the ideal 'hourglass' shape but slightly 'puffier' get that label and thats determined by strict beauty standards about women as well. Women with muffin tops, fatty arms, double chins, small bust, thick, blocky legs, fat back, and/or a specific shaped bottom arent considered 'thicc'. These women are just 'fat' and that doesnt have a good connotation in society.

As for mens beauty standards supposedly being higher, I dont really see how this is the case since men in society are defaulted as the face and form of humanity.

Theres the affectionate term 'dad bod' for middle aged and older fathers with hallmark paunches/beer bellies, and male pattermed baldness that develop with their age, plus the stereotypical 'dad' attire, but theres no equivalent affectionate term for 'mom bods' or their fashion, particularly about the post-partum changes womens bodies go through directly because of becoming a parent, like stretch marks and droopy skin, which are definitely more subject to ridicule and shame (hence the term 'bouncing back' after pregnancy and cosmetic surgeries like tummy tucks and lyposuction more heavily marketed at women).

Going to the gym seems to equally pressure men and women to look a certain way, but there seems to be more societal leniency for a man to be fat and strong in particular than a woman, even if such body type is the result of or requires such form to effectively and safely perform, like in weight lifting. And the standards for women to remain 'beautiful' while exercising and achieving their results is pretty strong, so women are encouraged to care more about how photogenic they are than than health and fitness; they arent encouraged to build muscle and bulk through strength training and larger portioned meals as much as just 'slimming down' to a petite form from cardio and restrictive dieting. Men seem to be encouraged to gain bulk, eat their calories, and become strong by contrast, and theres not necessarily discouragement from getting a certain size in bulk lest they look 'womanish' or something supposedly degrading. Though theres definitely some pressure they have to look photogenic, parricularly a '6 pack' and more lean look.

Basically Im not sure where this idea that mens beauty standards are more restrictive than womens when mens beauty standards revolve around natural attractiveness of varied types while womens revolve around what basically performative costuming of a very specific image.

Partly disagree, some other factors to attraction are shared traits (race/short men with short women of similar dimorphic proportions to average height men/women, etc.) and how hygiene/fashion practices express your personality and if it appeals to the other person’s tastes in those regards.

It is also a shame that there is not more open gender roles for men for fashion/grooming/fitness (I.e. slim but healthy men) and that those of us men who wear makeup are harshly judged or most women not attracted to it.

In general, statistics and anecdotal evidence suggest that men have more diverse tastes than women, but all one can do is their best to be appealing to their similar kinds of women and seek women interested in more open gender roles and dynamics to be able to have such a connection with a woman instead of it all being one-sided.

Personally I also practice open gender roles and would date a woman with more masculine grooming habits (unshaven legs, no makeup, etc.)

I get that men can’t wear make up or shape wear based on standards of beauty but like it or not (call it “cheating” if you will) women put more effort in their appearance.

How many men even have a skin care routine? That’s not make up or clothes. It’s simple lotions and a serums etc. as we age if one gender puts on sun screen every day and the other doesn’t there will be a beauty gap.

What makes women beautiful is easy to have. All women have wide hips, ass and boobs. Even if she lets herself go, she still has curves, boobs and ass. Men on the other hand need constant workout to have broad shoulders and a toned body. I've been working out for over a year and still not even close to my goal body. Meanwhile I know girls that haven't run in their lives, binge eat junk food, drink and smoke and they still have plump asses and perky boobs that make men drool. It is what it is.

There’s three main arguments for men claiming women are just more attractive:

“I’m personally not attracted to men, but I am attracted to women. Therefore, women are naturally more attractive than men.”
Women learn how to take care of themselves better. They put more effort into presentation, posture, skin care, hair care, and a more personable attitude.
Women wear make up, men don’t. Generally speaking.

None of these are legitimate grounds for claiming that women are just naturally more good looking than men, but telling men that having clear skin, an good haircut, and putting on some eyeliner helps them is really damn hard.

Wrong, women just take better care of themselves with a generally good sense of fashion, an elaborate skincare routine, hairstyling, makeup, nails, lashes, laser hair removal, surgical and non-surgical beauty enhancements and so on to stay competitive. They are willing to go the extra mile and will spend significant amounts of money on looking presentable.

Whenever people talk about how "they see ugly men with pretty girlfriends all the time" I wonder, what would a woman have to look like to be considered uglier than a normal guy?

She can be tall, she can be short, she can have small boobs, she can have big boobs, she can be thicker, she can be scrawny, she can have a small butt, she can have a big butt and still be considered pretty.

Then someone might say "that's because women wear makeup and care more about the clothes they wear and hair etc", when that's just inverting cause and effect.

These things only work on women PRECISELY because people would already see you as "okay" or pretty even if you don't, it's like someone saying that men are more athletic because they exercise more, men exercise more exactly because they already are more athletic even sedentary, not the opposite LoL.

So I have mixed feelings on this topic. In my local running club we're doing a 0 to 5km start to run. It's mostly women and their attractiveness... Varies. When I go grocery shopping the attractiveness... Varies. When I go compete in a local running competition holy the women are mostly hot.

Most guys I see I do not find ugly, nor are the women supermodels, but the men just look kinda sloppy or dorky compared to the women they’re with. Yes women have more options with makeup, but a lot of women don’t wear makeup on a daily basis and still look put-together… I’m mainly talking clothes and hair.

Not all women who are overweight are considered “thicc,” it’s all about genetics and how they gain their weight. Likewise, men with bigger frames can also carry more excess weight without being consisted fat. There are pale goth guys who are considered beautiful or interesting too, but yes the pale dude in the Adam Sandler outfit is going to just look pasty.

So while I do get the point you’re making, and I’d say women do have more options for enhancing their appearances, it is more complex than that. Men don’t usually utilize any of the options they DO have.
