Hooters t-shirt for Valentine's day from a boyfriend back before I got married. He was stunned I didn't like it. I guess he thought because I had big boobs I should love a restaurant focused on big boobs that I'd never even been to. I never wore it. I did not wear it for him. It drove home very clearly I was just a sex toy to him. The relationship ended.

With my ex husband, he once got me this big, ridiculous gothic style dress/coat with fur trim. I was an adult woman with a child and I have never been goth in my life and he got me like a goth prom dress for a teenager living in a cold climate. And because we were a young family and had a budget that Christmas, it was all I got. I actually wore it once on a date (because he felt bad that I didn't like it and I was too nice) and felt like the biggest idiot on Earth.

Ex husband also bought me a blue cameo necklace one year. It was pretty enough, not really my style but he got mad because I didn't wear it enough and he'd had to custom order it. Then he gaslit the shit out of me telling me I told him I had this treasured blue cameo necklace as a child and he went through hell to get me one. News to me. I never had one.

Found out later he would buy me gifts based on whatever woman he was cheating on me with. The cameo necklace probably was for one of his girls and then she dumped him so he gave it to me and tried to make me think I was insane for not remembering how much I love blue cameo necklaces.

A bottle opener he stole from his work when the Sol Beer vendor visited. I don’t drink beer. I had a single beer opener hanging on my fridge for people that did drink beer that visited my home. Now I have a god damn collection because men saw that I had more than one bottle opener after that. I wish I could post this ridiculous collection of bottle openers. I leave them on the fridge as a reminder every morning to not date bartenders.

The same record, twice in a row. As in he forgot he got me that record for my birthday, and then got it for me for Valentine’s Day. The kicker was I already owned that record so I now have three copies of the same record.
A giftcard that he had regifted to me. It was $20 for a restaurant I’d never been to over an hour away and had no intention of ever going to.
My ex “tried” to be thoughtful by ordering a blanket with my favorite band logo on it, but he was stupid enough to order it from some sketchy Chinese website so when it came in the mail it was like 2 ft by 2 ft. I gave it to my friend’s dog to sleep on.

I used to be a bit of a pick me and thought it was funny how clueless men are with gift giving. I’m now dating someone who so far has only demonstrated high value behavior (still vetting) and the difference is insane. I regularly get flowers, Uber eats deliveries, nice self care products, perfumes, etc. He always makes sure to include a card telling me how important I am to him. Seriously makes me cringe thinking about the low effort stuff I accepted in the past.

I made a post a few weeks ago about never receiving gifts from my LV-ex. Thai Christmas my kids absolutely outdid theme selves making it special for me. Anyway. I was cleaning out a cupboard and found this. And ugh. Memories. I was off and on dating a guy and we were “on” during Christmas a couple of years ago. I was thrilled because I truly love buying special gifts. I purchased 3 different items for him. Money wise all told they were less than $100 but they were very special, personalized items. I made a big deal about exchanging gifts and how excited I was. Well. I arrived at his house. And he had nothing for me. Nothing. He said he didn’t realize I was so serious about the gifts. I was heartbroken. He said he felt like an ass and I said well you should. He lives about 2 hours from me. So we don’t see each other for about 2 weeks. So. He comes to visit and he has a gift bag. I’m not happy because what the point. I don’t want a guilt gift. Well. This is what he got me. He was at GameStop buying a video game (because of course he was) and saw this and here I am. Now. I like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. And sure Groot is fun. But that’s about it for me. Utter disappointment.

The worst of the worst was the small souvenirs my NVM ex got me when he went on vacation without me.

They weren't bad on its own, but I had gone on vacation without him just before he went on his vacation, and I got him wonderful, thoughtful souvenirs along the way. When I gave them to him, he basically made fun of them and rolled his eyes. Then he proceeded to go on his vacation and get me crappier versions of what I got him. When I called him out for it, he acted like he never insulted my souvenirs to begin with or something stupid like that.

One birthday a few years ago I wanted to be as 'low maintenance' as possible for this man since he was very busy w/ his businesses so I said the only thing I wanted to do was go to the park and feed the birds because I actually love doing that with friends and family. He says okay, that's cute, we can do that.

We go to the store, I pick out grapes, some fruit and veggies, and unsalted nuts for the birds. He doesn't offer to buy them which I'm like, okay, cool I guess. We drive to a park, he parks the car, and he pulls out his phone and starts making business calls. He whispers to me, "You can go feed them, I'll be in here." I sat in the car because I didn't want to stand out in the cold, alone, on my fucking birthday, feeding birds. Instead I sat for like, an hour and a half listening to this guy talk business with his buddies. And surprise, surprise, I received no gifts from him over the course of our relationship. No card, no cakes, nothing. He was always "too busy," it was always "sorry I'm such a bad boyfriend, I didn't get you anything."

But guess who did receive thoughtful gifts, homemade cakes, heartfelt cards from me and my family every year???

I’ve not thought about this in years, but in my early twenties I dated a guy with a pretty severe alcohol problem. I’m talking drunk at work, losing his job at 22, angry screaming at me kind of alcoholic. He went to rehab a couple times and it never stuck because he didn’t try. Eventually I couldn’t take the abuse he dished out when he was drunk and ended things, by moving 5000km away lol. He had fucked up so many times at this point that I was just done, and what does he do? Buys me an engagement ring LMAO. I actually laughed when he opened the box, partly because of the absurdity of it all and also because the ring was hideous and two sizes too small. It made it that much easier to say goodbye and don’t contact me again. He wasn’t asking me because he loved me in any meaningful way, he was trying to leverage and manipulate me into staying. It was so transparent it was honestly cringeworthy. He was pissed as he’d “spent a lot of money” and how could I not accept his gift??? Something that wasn’t my style or taste or even my size?? Hard pass.

Later he tried to blackmail me with nudes he’d taken of me without my consent or knowledge. Truly the cream of the shit crop. And funny enough he messaged me a week ago, almost six years since we last spoke and over six since we broke up. 🤮

My LV ex told me he used to write in a journal and was considering getting back into the habit as it helped keep his mind sorted and clearer. That Christmas I spent over an hour and a fair bit of money picking out a beautiful leather bound journal, fountain pen and then writting on the last page a thoughtful inscription.

One time my alcoholic ex took me (after I begged) to a winery on a date, and bought us two glasses and three bottles of fancy wine to take home. One was specifically a sweeter wine for me. After going through both of the other two bottles one night, I hid mine so he wouldn't drink it and I could have some of it another night. He rummaged through the house screaming at me asking where it was. I was so scared I finally gave it up and he drank it all.

From 18-20 I dated a LVM but he was hot and I was young and it took me a while to figure that one out.

Anyways! His birthday was ten days before mine. The first birthday we were together, I made him cookies and bought him a hoodie I thought he would like. We'd only been dating a few months at this point. For my birthday (literally right after his) he said he didn't know what to buy me and just took me to a store to pick something out. I told him politely that I would prefer he just plan a nice date/experience. But he was like nah you just pick something out (felt very impersonal. For me I don't care about the value of a gift but care about the thought).

The next year I made him a cheesecake using his favourite coffee, and bought him some nice clothes and a few other things he mentioned in passing. And planned a camping trip with his friends. My birthday was on a weekday that year and we were currently living ~1.5 hours apart so he didn't come to see me on my birthday. My HVM brother (who was the one who pointed out how much of a loser my bf was) drove over an hour to take me for dinner though. But I still wasn't mad at my boyfriend for not coming, although he didn't make plans to celebrate another time. In fact, the weekend after my birthday (which I assumed would be belated celebrations) he booked an appointment to have his wisdom teeth out. Again I wasn't mad because CoOl GiRl SyNdRoMe. Last minute I decided to come see him that weekend (he was living in my home town and I had a ride home). He clearly panicked when I told him I was coming home and picked up flowers and scratch tickets from the grocery store as well as a bottle of tequila. Like... Thanks for the gift but crazy low effort and something you would buy for somebody you didn't know well.

I was dating a guy in my early 20s, we got together right after Christmas but had been talking since November (my bday is in early December too). If I knew what I know now, I could’ve saved myself some time and effort - he did nothing for my birthday or Christmas even though we were in the “trying to impress each other” flirty stage. Throughout our relationship i mentioned that I didn’t care for roses as a gift and would prefer lilies or an orchid or a potted plant. I also told him often how much I liked his copper colored beard.

So, Valentine’s Day arrives. He asked me what I wanted to do, and I said I’d like to go out for dinner. At the time I worked overnight, so I told him I’d wake up around 6pm and probably be ready around 7. I had to work that night at 10 but it seemed like plenty of time.

So I get up, get ready, text him...no reply. I sit around, watch TV, check my phone...nothing. Around 8, I call him. “Sorry, just running a little late!” 8:30, he finally shows up to pick me up. He brought me roses and shaved his beard off, and I found him completely unattractive without it. Then he took me to dinner...at my mom’s house. I have a strained relationship with my family, and he knew it. It was something he was “trying to work on” for me so I felt irritated, cheated out of a romantic evening, uncomfortable, and stressed. I was also dressed sexy because I was imagining an evening of dimly lit restaurants, maybe a bar, maybe a quickie, and then changing for work. I was not imagining sitting in my mother’s well lit dining room with my tits pushed up to my chin in full make-up.

After dinner I heaved a sigh of relief that we could leave and maybe still hit a bar and spend some time alone together before I had to work - but no. He and my sister’s equally NV live-in boyfriend hopped on the PS3 and played video games until 9:45. Then he dropped me off at work with a quick kiss.

I pretty much knew it was over at that point, and we broke up a couple of weeks later.

Not actually a "gift", but a guy I was dating for 3 months lent me his old foldable bike because I said I missed riding a bike but didn't have space in my apartment to store one.

One month after that, he ghosted me and only resurfaced to say he "met someone" and decided to make it work with her. I asked what he was going to do about his bike and he never responded. I waited one more month and sold it (I didn't make much money but in the end it didn't matter).

For the Christmas after that he gave me nothing. He claimed he was making something but it never appeared. When I found out it was a coupon to take me somewhere and questioned why it is taking 2 months to ClipArt a coupon, he told me I'm selfish and materialistic.
For our first wedding anniversary he got me nothing. He "thought about" getting me a regional food item while I was in my home state visiting family that I would have to pick up myself. He didnt end up doing it anyway.
