This is so fucking stupid. "This is why there aren't women in the field", no its not, this is just a guy who's comfortable in his (pretty awesome imo) style. And no one "saw fit to stop him from presenting"? no shit, they were more concerned with what they just accomplished, who would have imagined someone getting mad over this\
edit: wow this turned into something
[–]US_Ranger122 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, the argument about preventing women from being in the field is stupid but do you really think that shirt is awesome? That thing is straight 1970's bowling alley.
[–]guywithaccount220 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
He helped land a robot on a comet. A freakin' COMET. He can dress like GWAR for all I care.
[–]evil-doer76 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
i dunno, having a big latex cock spraying blood may have been a little distracting to the interviewer.

Not to mention, hazardous to the sensitive electronics in the control room.
[–]RevShogun5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Not to mention that feminist would get mad because he represents male dominance in astro-fields and how discriminated women are.
TL;DR: Playing with feminists is playing catch 22 on level extreme.

Pretty sure if a NASA scientist dressed as GWAR for these kinds of things, i would watch every single thing. Even if the Mars Rover is just doing a diagnostics test on it's rear left tread.

The next mission NASA launches must be named GWAR.
[–]oilybusiness0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

HE WAS WEARING A SPEEDO TO WORK.
Sounds to me like he was trying to say something pretty loud.
[–][deleted]1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I did consider that as intentional but then the sentence structure would need to be different.
[–]practeerts1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I agree with you. I shamelessly plug my humor in.

I just edited to point that out, too. It's even more entertaining since /u/oilybusiness uses "you're" the first time but not the second.
[–]US_Ranger-7 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I agree. In fact, I wish he did dress like GWAR, that would have been pretty fucking cool. I have a feeling it would be parents who were outraged that their children were in danger though. Err'body gotta be outraged about something.
[–]TheLordOfShit2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm outraged that so many people are outraged.
[–]Awesomeade51 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Anyone complaining about "misogynistic shirts" keeping women out of scientific fields is too stupid and lazy to have ever had a legitimate chance in the field anyway.
[–]PacoBedejo18 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If I had a nickel for every time I heard a woman say;
I can't wait to be an astrophysicist. The universe is amazi...is that a guy wearing a shirt with half-naked women on it? Fuck it, I'm gonna go be a receptionist.
Seriously. I'd almost have a nickel!
[–]US_Ranger11 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's like anything else, an excuse and an easy way to rationalize something that doesn't even correlate. Anyone with an IQ higher than a potato would instantly laugh at someone even suggesting such a thing.
[–]ColdIceZero43 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Who cares if someone else doesn't think it's awesome. The guy wearing it thinks it's awesome; and if him wearing whatever he's comfortable wearing helps achieve the mission, which clearly it didn't hinder the success of the mission, then what does it matter what anyone, including OP above, thinks about that incredibly gay bowling shirt?
[–]Multidan_30 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Only women are allowed to wear what they want now, as it's a form of empowerment. Men have to fall inline and wear a uniform... Didn't you get that memo?
[–]US_Ranger-46 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Are you pretending to be outraged too?
Anyway, it was just a remark about a shirt that you should take out once a year as a joke instead of something you should wear on national television. I'm not upset about it, you shouldn't be either.
edit: Keep downvoting guys. Your OUTRAGE over me thinking his shirt doesn't look good brings a good laugh. Yes, that automatically means he shouldn't be allowed to wear it (never said that), he's a piece of shit (didn't say that), I don't care about the comet landing (didn't say that) or whatever other straw-man argument you shit-for-brains want to make up. This place is worse than /r/srs.....
[–]Tainted_OneX28 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There was a whole campaign against him. It was so bad, he publicly apologized on camera while he cried because it was so horrible. All because he wanted to help out a friend (who happened to be a female) and wear her shirt on camera to hopefully gain some exposure for her.
Sorry mate, but you're just waaaaaay off the mark trying to play devil's advocate on this argument. So go ahead and take your smugness somewhere else.
[–]US_Ranger-29 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm not being smug. I'm laughing at the guy who's getting bent out of shape because I thought the shirt was goofy looking. I'm laughing at this section (in general) for always being outraged over everything, sort of like feminists do. When you want to be emotional about an argument, you're going to look stupid regardless.
As for the scientist, no shit. I know all about it, everyone does. My post had nothing to do with that.
[–]Tainted_OneX7 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah I misread your comment:
Anyway, it was just a remark about a shirt that you should take out once a year as a joke instead of something you should wear on national television.
I thought you were referring to the comment the girl made in the tumblr picture. Now I realize you were just referring to the comment you made above, my bad. First time I've been on this sub before though, just saw it on /r/All. Hilarious how bad you're getting downvoted though lol
[–]imredditting12 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I will never understand people's desire to control other individuals. It's his shirt, he's wearing it. He's not asking you to wear it, buy it, approve of it, or anything else.
[–]US_Ranger-26 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Jesus christ, you're a certifiable idiot.
Who the fuck said anything about controlling anyone else? Did you make that up in your weed induced haze or is that really what you got from my post? If it's the latter, please stay in school.

I'm in a weed induced haze and I see no issues.
[–]imredditting4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I have not received my certificate yet. Do you award those or who should I speak to?
Who the fuck said anything about controlling anyone else?
You did. You don't agree with the design on his shirt so you believe he should be limited to how often he wears it or where he wears it.
If it's the latter, please stay in school.
You can insult me all you want, I really don't care. You're the sort of person who shouldn't be taken seriously anyway.
[–]US_Ranger-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No, I didn't say that. YOU created that argument. It's called a straw-man. Best of luck in your drug use of 2015.
[–]imredditting1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Struggling for insults? There's more than a month until 2015, I think you're a bit early for that one anyway. I'm beginning to think you're the one on drugs.
No, not struggling for insults. Just amazed at your crappy straw-man argument.
[–]imredditting0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, sure dude. You're obviously capable of speaking but you revert to acting like an idiot when opposed. No struggling at all. None.
[–]US_Ranger-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]ColdIceZero1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Oh shit. Yeah, I'm not outraged at all. My comment was largely sardonic. Bummer about all the downvotes, man...
[–]US_Ranger0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Not a single fuck was given. This place, over the last year, has turned into a carbon copy of /r/feminism anyway.
All your bitching earned my downvote. Fuck, you even ended with the obligatory "worse than SRS" groaner.
The best part is that you used a SRS comparison when this entire thread is a bunch of SRS types (except men) doing the exact same thing. Outraged that I said his shirt was ugly. OUTRAGED I TELL YOU.
Bunch of emotional guys in here. I suggest you get estrogen checked and report back.
I didn't use an srs comparison. In fact I snarked you for using one. And your parent comment you keep referring to in your bitching is very highly upvoted. And srs is mostly guys (white guys in fact). God, you're just a mess here.
Oh, the audacity!
I'm looking forward to those estrogen numbers, let me know when you get that blood test done.

As someone in a STEM field, it's pretty damn clear that women aren't kept out in order to maintain the "boys' club". That's bullshit. 1 out of 10 of us are female and 9 out of 10 don't like those odds. Universities even offer incentives for girls to join their STEM programs, and they just fucking don't.
For fuck's sake, the lack of women in STEM fields, if an issue at all, is something that women have to sack up and fix. It's them being lazy and going the artsy/easier/self-rewarding routes.
[–]Yoganewby57 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Agreed with everything until your last line. Assuming all women take the easier route is bullshit. And assuming STEM is the only difficult option is bullshit.
[–]marrio9117 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
STEM is by and large much more difficult academically. Like its pretty hard to bullshit physics, but darn near anyone could bs poetry or women's studies stuff.
[–]ruffykunn4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'd argue it's pretty hard to be creative and make good art/literature/movies/games too. Just challenging in a different way,
[–]marrio914 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Right, but I'm strictly talking academics here. I'd wager making it as an artist is harder than making it as a chemist.
[–]ruffykunn3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Fair enough, but some liberal arts universities require you to actually submit quality work in order to be admitted (the most extreme example that comes to mind are animation schools where your portfolio has to be very good to get in, but classical instruments and dance schools also come to mind), so I doubt you could weasel your way through studying there without significant creative talent. Either way, you did only talk about academics, sorry :D.
All good. My gf is an advertising major at Columbia so I know a bit about art degrees and such. It's just a different kind of education in my experience, but yeah.

STEM fields:
STEM is an acronym referring to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The term is typically used when addressing education policy and curriculum choices in schools to improve competitiveness in technology development. It has implications for workforce development, national security concerns and immigration policy.
MINT (mathematics, information sciences, natural sciences, and technology) is a much less common term with a similar meaning.

Well good to know!
I thought it was just physics, I still don't think these are the only hard majors though, they were just examples off the top of my head since I'm a bio major. Something being 'hard' depends on the person, for one person finance could be impossible, and for another analyzing literature could be

[–]marrio912 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
OK, that anecdote aside, let's look at entrance requirements, drop out rates, test scores, and then gender....
[–]Stoic_Potato1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Hey, I'm just providing an anecdotal counter to your sweeping generalization that stem is 'by far the most difficult academic field.'
I have no doubt they perform well, and I have a few buddies who are engineers who did just that, but saying its the most difficult is your opinion. It comes down to specialization. Just because someone did great in their engineering program doesn't mean they would be able to do great in other fields.
No its not my opinion alone, it'd also the opinions of darn near every uni in the US. We all think it's harder, so they let less people in, it's harder to get into, more people drop out, and those who major and continue in those fields, by and large, earn more than those who don't, not because it's some nerd club, but because others don't know how to do those things, and will pay a lot to people who do.
I'm not saying it's the only place for smart people, hell it's not, or that it's the only real thing in uni, it's not. But is it harder overall, of course.

[–]F9R6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I took a pretty diverse set of GE classes in college. They were all jokes.
Ok but STEM is not the only hard division. Everybody takes easy GE classes. There are harder options, but most people just try to get there gen eds done quickly with easy ones so they can focus on their major requirements.
[–]LooneyDubs1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Assuming anything is bullshit. Even assuming that his statement was an assumption.
[–]all_you_need_to_know26 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's them being lazy and going the artsy/easier/self-rewarding routes.
I think that you're being a bit unmeasured.
[–]zazhx3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There's not a lack of women in STEM fields. Really just T fields, maybe TE fields. STEM is actually arguably a majority female now.
The lack of females in the workforce by their own volition should at least allow us to compensate the statistics. Only 1/4 of able-bodied females even chose to integrate into the workforce for a career, so 10% in highly skilled fields is pretty good.
[–]JoshtheAspie1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And it's not just "odds of meeting women". For the 9 in 10 negative effects. I get comments from STEM guys all the time about how they wish more women were hired, so they didn't have to go up or down multiple floors just to find an unoccupied stall for #2.
Personally, I'd rather have the most competent and low-drama co-workers I can, and get a little bit more stair climbing in, but maybe that's just me.
[–]MiningEIT1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Plan on engineering, took art classes and wanted to shoot myself afterwards they were so uneventful. Passed it with a 102 percent, clearly there is a big difference in difficulty and I think you're right: engineering vs drawing a picture engineering is harder every time.

But just like water takes the path of least resistance, these feminists take the path of most victimhood.
They don't even feel they have to prove themselves. They cherry-pick a few instances of sexism, then apply that to being the norm.
Check out this discussion I had about chess a few days ago. Apparently, the main reason women aren't playing chess is because they get picked on. Nevermind that boys are much more interested even before any club culture exist; no it must be discrimination.
And that males get picked on for wanting to play chess instead of football, or be studious instead of delinquent. ALL THOSE OPPRESSED MALES DISSUADED FROM ENTERING STEM FIELDS!

[–]easyst178 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, the logic of a bunch of feminists looking to someone who we rely on for high levels of innovation and creativity and telling them, 'Conform' is entirely beyond me. I guess they must be thinking, 'Maybe if we push enough men to not want to do a thing for society or anyone in it, women will finally start making the choice to get into stem fields'
[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That applies here for SJWs and men. They found a random guy to hate on and they harassed him to tearful apologies.

[–]ExpendableOne-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Any rational human being would not take offense to that shirt. They might look at it and laugh about it a little, because it's a unique style, but to look at it and think "omg, this person should clearly be changing shirts because it will offend people!" is ridiculous. No one would have thought that until crazies actually got offended by it. People who think a shirt like that might cause women not to feel welcomed in the field of science aren't just ignorant of the issue with women not entering stem fields but have have serious psychological issues.
[–][deleted]-16 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well considering how many people have voiced their displeasure, not all of them feminists, it's clear how very wrong that assumption was. But what do you mean, who could have imagined this happening?
If the president wore that after killing Osama, would you at least agree it would be in poor taste?
[–]diaperrhea3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
killing bin laden is nowhere near the same tangent as landing on a comet.
[–][deleted]4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]Anarchistnation2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–][deleted]0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Who said, or implied, that it wasn't? He could have been out there completely naked and jerked off on live TV and the comet would still be more important.
Is it not reasonable to criticize someone merely because there is something more important?

"She CHOSE to wear so little clothes going through a shitty, poor neighbourhood. She's made her bed, now she has to lie in it."
Strange how easily that logic falls apart.
[–]AudioCasanova264 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
At first I was like "damn son, that's a great point!" but then I recognized where the analogy breaks down.
The woman in dressing in a way that objectifies herself. This guy is dressing in a way that objectifies another group.
The analogy at hand would be more akin to "She CHOSE to wear black face going through a shitty, poor neighborhood. She made her bed, now she has to lay in it"
I personally think that the complaints about the shirt are a load of horse shit and that some people just kind of suck and like to pick out anything negative in even the best situations. I just wanted to point out the flaw other people may see with this argument.
[–]Hyperbole_-_Police130 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Also the analogy compares being criticized and insulted to being raped. Saying someone deserves to be criticized/insulted for wearing something is a pretty far leap from saying someone deserves to be raped for wearing something.
[–]AudioCasanova27 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes that too! That's for catching that hyperbole, officer!
[–]zazhx1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Part of this point of analogy and hyperbole was reductio ad absurdum. While the argument is flawed, he's not equating rape and insult, he's trying to demonstrate an error in reasoning.
[–]JNS_KIP3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
yes shallow and pedantic.
[–]ametalshard-8 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Rape has nothing to do with it. Being approached at all is a form of "rape" to liberals these days.
[–]doctor-girlfriend68 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
also, it's okay for someone to criticize someone's fashion choices, but it's never okay to rape someone. so yeah, saying 'he chose to wear a shitty shirt [and is now being criticized for it]' is fair game, but 'she chose to wear slutty clothes and was then raped' doesn't flow by the same logic. different situations people. you can't really compare the unfortunate and stupid public outcry to him getting raped
[–]DontRockTheGoat2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, except they didn't just "criticize" him. They mercilessly bullied him to tears.
[–]AudioCasanova-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]TerranBarron8 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What'd they do?
[–]DumpyLips27 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What about
he chose to wear a hoody and dress like a gangstar?
That's surely the same, isn't it?
Also, I feel like "the shirt objectifies women" is sort of amorphous. I'm really not sure how the shirt objectifies women or even what that means exactly. I tried searching online and it's starting to seem more and more that phrase just gets slung around as a trump card.
But really, it doesn't matter that much because the point here is the logic that's being used to justify this behavior towards him.
The commentor from the OP is tacitly saying that
yes, feminists are wrong for treating him in the way they are. But since he did something that got their attention, it's his fault.
Then your comment about the shirt objectifying another group is basically saying "well, what he did was really really wrong so he kind of deserved it"
I really don't see how that challenges the assertion that we're blaming a victim.
EDIT: LOL! Did one of you white night leg beards trolling MRA really just go through and downvote all my posts, even the ones in unrelated forums? I fucking LOVE it. There's nothing more satisfying than crushing an argument so hard and and completely that the only response left is petty down voting. Mmmmm jimmies have been rustled.

Still not the same. The difference being the the hoody does not satirize a group while the short on question can be argued to do so.
The hoody may make you look like a gang member, but the shirt displays caricatures of a group which said group may find offensive.
That is what was meant by objectified. We could instead say stereotyped if that helps. Imagine if it was stereotypical caricatures of another group. What if it had pictures of Jews with big noses and a Yamaka or Chinese with buck teeth and a circular reed hat. This is the kind of thing feminists see when they see cartoon drawings of scantily clad women with huge breasts.
EDIT: I don't think it's wrong to be offended by the shirt and to point out that you find it offensive. It's just silly that some people can get offended to the point that they forget that the only reason they have an opportunity to complain about this mans shirt, is because he landed a rocket on a fucking comet moving a million miles an hour through space. Talk about seeing the glass as half empty.
[–]DumpyLips2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't see how this is the same. I suppose there could be other reasons but it would seem that in the case of a buck tooth chinese person or a big nose jew, those caricatures are meant to say something along the lines of:
Look at how DUMB this group of people are.
Which is to say there is something wrong/bad about a group of people.
With hot girls on a t-shit, I don't think the implication is that all women are hot but rather these women are hot to me.
It'd be like if I had a shirt with guys playing baseball hitting homeruns and shit. The message is "These guys are crushing sports and this representation of excellence is appealing to me"
[–]AudioCasanova6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I agree with you that that (along with the fact that his friend made it for him) was the reason why he wore it, but that still sends a questionable message. It says "These are the kinds of women I value. Ones drawn to unrealistic proportions, dressed and posed provacatively." Its not a statement he was trying to make, but its the sociatial idea that it perpetuates. Its a little different than saying I value baseball players for their ability to play baseball.
[–]DumpyLips4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Its a little different than saying I value baseball players for their ability to play baseball.
Why??
And what exactly is wrong with:
Ones drawn to unrealistic proportions, dressed and posed provacatively
First a cartoon by definition is unrealistic, so lets get that out of the way right off the bat. Second, what is wrong with drawing women dressed a certain way?
Third, there are SIGNIFICANTLY fewer people in the world that can play professional baseball than there are women that look like models.
There's this bullshit trope people keep trying to argue that supermodels have unrealistic bodies and I don't think people realize just how common they are. For example, there's a girl in my one class that's built like a damn supermodel but with the way she moves, she could never be a model. Models aren't just physically beautiful, they're tremendously graceful with the way they move and position themselves. The rarity of a model does not come from her looks as much as it comes from her ability to display them.
The truth is, I live in a big city and see at least 5 women every day that have "unrealistic proportions" I do not see nearly as many people capable of playing professional sports.
[–]AudioCasanova4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It is ok to only value a baseball player for their basball abilities because that is their only functional value as a baseball player. It not ok to only value a women (or man for that matter) for their physical attractiveness because physical attractiveness is only one small facet of what it means to be a woman or man. This describes what people mean when they speak of objectification.
[–]DumpyLips3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It is ok to only value a baseball player for their basball abilities because that is their only functional value as a baseball player.
But they're not just baseball players, they're people also. Is that not obvious?
It not ok to only value a women (or man for that matter) for their physical attractiveness
What if the person is a model? Using your baseball player logic, A model's purpose is to be attractive so valuing a model for her attractiveness is okay because that's their function.
Also, why is it not okay to value attractive women? And why does valuing a quality about a person objectify them? That logic would mean that you can't idolize anyone for anything. You can't admire anyone for a single exceptional quality because somehow you're objectifying them?
Also
This logic still employs the concept of : It's okay to wrong a person if that person did something that was wrong.
[–]Blindocide1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
isn't that, basically, what our system of laws say?

Its not ok to wrong them, but its totally fine to disagree with and criticize his choice of attire.
EDIT: I also dont think he should have had to apologize for it. It distracts from the actual important event.
If it's okay to criticize a mans choices because you think they were bad then it must also be okay to criticize a woman's choices because you think they were bad.
Yes i think it is ok to criticize a womans choices as well. If a woman wears clothing that atteacts unwanted attention in an unsafe area, I would feel comfortable saying "you shouldnt have done that and should reconsider your actions next time.", I would not however say "you deserved to be raped because of your decision."
Remember, this man was criticized, NOT raped for his choices.
[–]DumpyLips0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What does this matter?
Victim blaming is victim blaming.
Being criticized does not make you a victim. People are allowednto object to others decisions. Also, what does victim blaming mean? Is it not ok to say that someones actions lead to logical consequences?
Being criticized does not make you a victim.
Well since apparently saying "Hi" to a woman on the street is sexual harassment, I would say that this man was most definitely harassed over his choice of clothes.
Also, what does victim blaming mean?
I believe a typical definition of victim blaming is what occurs when a person is victimized and then one asserts the responsibility of their victimization falls on the victims shoulders.
[–]eletheros1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm really not sure how the shirt objectifies women or even what that means exactly.
The word has grown to be meaningless, but is often presented to mean "you don't make <target> the whole of your world"
[–]DumpyLips1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm sorry, I don't follow.
[–]Lurker_IV3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I also think that the complaints about the shirt being all about 'objectifying' women are a load of horse shit shirt. How about a little freedom of expression and artistic appreciation of the human form? If he had a shirt covered with kittens would people be complaining about animal cruelty and animal welfare? If he had a shirt covered with WWF wrestlers would people be making a giant stink about glorification of violence, etc.? If he had a videogame T-shirt would that be enough to bring our the gamergate crowd to whine about 'gamer culture' in our scientific community?
[–]fhayde2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think you're trying to create a straw (wo)man based on the imagery on the shirt as the supposed victim of some sort of objectification when there is no pretense to do so. Explain to me why a woman in alluring clothing in sexually suggestive poses somehow represents the objectification of an entire demographic? Sexual liberation has been one of the core tenants of the feminism movement since the 60s where women had to fight this very mentality as the social stigma associated with provocative clothing and behavior was immensely negative.
We live in a world now where a scientist can wear a shirt with imagery of a made up woman posing suggestively in very alluring clothing, and be involved in ground breaking research, without being judged by the conservative plurality amongst society. Is this not, literally, what the feminists of the 60s and 70s were fighting to achieve? Abolishment of the social stigma associated with the female body and a woman's sexual rights to choose what she does, with who, and in what way?
The idea that feminists would jump on this is a bit mind blowing to me. Sadly many of the comments being made are reminiscent of the same arguments made against feminists some 50 years ago, arguments we learned were born from ignorance, fear, and out of a desire to control.
The analogy being made, imo, stands because the accusation assumes only a misogynist would wear that shirt in the same way the (lame) argument is made that a woman wearing revealing clothing is imitating a prostitute or sex worker, etc... neither of which are valid considering fashion is so subjective. It's a fucking shirt.
[–]Deansdale2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
"Objectification" is a bullshit idea made up by feminists. Stop using their inane artificial terminology. Half the battle is already lost if you adopt their terms.
He did not hurt anybody with the shirt, period.
You can rest assured, this experience was at least as traumatizing for him as getting raped would be. He'd probably choose rape over this. So it's absolutely okay to compare the two. And saying that he deserved that trauma because of what he wore IS the argument feminists fight against all the time. Thing is, it's rarely if ever mentioned about rape victims, but of course feminists themselves use it without hesitation.
Feminists and SJWs alienate honest, decent people with their every move. They work very hard day and night to make people hate them with a passion. This does not bode well for them, but hey, who am I to criticize their actions. They will reap what they sow.
I want to reiterate that I personally do not find the shirt offensive nor do I think he should not get to wear the shirt. I am simply stating that it is understandable that someone could be offended by the images on the shirt, and it is within their right to state their disapproval just as it is within the rights of someone to wear that shirt.
You can't seriously say that being publicly criticized is as bad as being raped. I don't even know how begin to respond to that. I've never been raped but I've heard it's pretty traumatizing.
[–]Deansdale1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
someone could be offended by the images on the shirt
I bet these people would not be offended if some female scientist would give an interview dressed like one of the women on his shirt. That would be empowering, and criticizing her would be slut shaming! It's only a problem if men do something similar, like, wearing something with a woman depicted on it. Sexist bigots. On the same day the main attraction in the press was a Kardashian's ass. The hypocrisy is mindboggling.
I've never been raped but I've heard it's pretty traumatizing.
You have also never been destroyed publicly for a bullshit non-issue, and you can be 100% sure that it's pretty traumatizing as well. Just try to imagine it happening to you as a thought experiment. (This is called empathy.)
[–]AudioCasanova1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I bet these people would not be offended if some female scientist would give an interview dressed like one of the women on his shirt.
This is the difference between having a black character in a movie who happens to fulfill a couple stereotypes, versus what Michael Bay did in transformers 2 with those twins.
But this argument is itself racist/sexist, suggesting that something is okay for some races/sexes but not others. It's a form of hypocrisy.
No. Your not getting it. There is a difference a someone who chooses to display her body freely versus someone who wears a shirt depicting possibly offensive carictures.
In either case I think the point is that these are not really appropriate choices for work attire.
You have also never been destroyed publicly for a bullshit non-issue
I personally have not, but this kind of thing is not uncommon for people placed in the public eye. Can you imagine how many people probably tell Kanye that he's an arrogant hobbit fucking gay fish? Does he appoligize for being one? Fuck no!
With every decision Obama makes, you can bet hundreds of people will get pissed off and make a stink about it. Do you think Obama can afford to apoligize to all the people who disagree with his decisions?
Does Colonel Sanders break down in regret and apologize to PETA for all the delicious chickens he's battered and fried over the years? Fuck no!
When you're a public figure, every move you make will cause legions of haters to take up arms against you. Whether or not it destroys you is dependent upon how you respond to it.
Think about it. If he hadn't apologized and cried and instead ignored it like the bullshit non-issue that it is, then he could have easily gotten by as the cool scientist who wears funny shirts (I personally still see him this way).
Ignoring the haters is an effective way to mitigate the hurt they can cause you. Such a strategy is less effective with rapists.
[–]jmkiii1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Hi, I just want to say that wearing purposely offensive attire, i.e.: Blackface through a predominantly low-income, black community, and wearing skimpy clothing, which is meant to be offensive to no one are not the same thing.
That would be like saying me wearing a shirt that says "Kill all Jews" to a synagogue is the same as me wearing skimpy clothing.
As for the shirt the scientist wore... I'm kind of torn. While I think the shirt is pretty cool, it does seem inappropriate to wear at that particular event. If it were men in PVC clothing I would be saying the same thing, though. It's just an odd choice!
[–]AudioCasanova9 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah that's what I was saying. Wearing skimpy clothing is not the same as wearing offensive clothing (I.e. Black face or caricaturizations of any group).
[–]ponyrides2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Define "offensive clothing" please. I am pretty sure a lot of older and a lot of religious and a lot of socially conservative people find skimpy clothing offensive. So whose definition of offensive should we use? Or does it matter if/how someone finds it offensive? Can't we just use the same defense for both?
Just like a girl can wear a skimpy dress for her own benefit, because she likes it and it makes her feel good: He wasn't wearing it to impress strangers. He was wearing it because he liked it, it made him feel good and he wanted to show his appreciation to the girl who made it for him by wearing it in public.
[–]AudioCasanova2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Maybe Offensive was not the clearest term there.
Skimpy clothing can be offensive to ones ideas of modesty (which is their own problem because modesty is personal issue) while stereotypical caricatures are offensive to ones ideas of equality (which is everyone's problem because it is an interpersonal issue.)
[–]sarahkhill2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The logic wouldn't fall apart if they were even remotely similar scenarios. One is a woman dressing in very little clothing and then being a victim of a horrendous crime, the other is a guy wearing a shirt that is objectifies other people. You get this, right?
[–]_littlebones-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But... Why didn't anyone tell him to cover up or change? That's what I don't get about this whole thing. They let him go on TV like that. I haven't seen anyone bring that part of this whole thing up yet.
edit: I want to add that if they had told him to cover up, none of this would've happened because obviously the shirt was distracting and was a horrible representation of himself and who he works for/wtih. However, they didn't tell him to so, maybe everyone should stfu about it and move on. It's a horrendous, tasteless shirt. We get it. The guy landed a fucking robot on a moving rock through space. Can we just stay focussed here, people? Some of the people who are hating on this dude act like he ACTUALLY raped a person when in reality, he just wore an ugly shirt.
[–]FigNinja2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Do we know for certain that none of his colleagues gave him any advice about that shirt? If he were my teammate, I would probably do so. I'm not offended by the shirt, but it's not really work appropriate. I'd point out to him that, while I wasn't bugged, some folks out there would undoubtedly get their britches in a bunch over it.
In a workplace, you may have people around you with varying politics, religions, sexual mores, etc. If you wear sexually revealing clothing yourself, clothing with sexually evocative imagery or text, a t-shirt with political slogans, you do run the risk of creating some discomfort or conflict. That's why every workplace I've ever been in had a dress code. If he'd showed up in my office in that shirt even for a normal workday let alone a momentous and televised day, I wouldn't give a shit, but HR would be talking to him about it.
The internet dogpile was way out of proportion, but I knew the second I saw that shirt that some amount of shit would be coming his way.

No.
Is it my fault I got robbed?
No, it's the robber's fault. But I'd still be an idiot for putting myself in a situation that makes it more likely that I will be robbed.
If I go to a club and have my tits and ass sticking out and dance with a bunch of drunk horny men, do I deserve to be raped?
Is it my fault I got raped?
No, it's the rapist's fault. But I do have have to know that I put myself in a situation that made more likely that I'd be assaulted.
If I wear a ridiculous shirt with scantily-clad women on it on national TV, expecting to be taken seriously, do I deserve to get shit on and harassed by a bunch of feminist?

This is a very important distinction to make. He certainly didn't deserve what happened, and I do feel bad for him, but I also agree that it probably wasn't the best idea.

But they don't, and you don't.

A mild public relations gaffe and a violent sexual assault aren't analogous, in my view. Substituting them in for each other in an argument is disingenuous at best.
I don't have much love for SJWs, but y'all just bein ignant.
[–]inthemud-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A mild public relations gaffe and a violent sexual assault aren't analogous, in my view.
Rape is not, in most cases, a violent sexual assault. The definition of rape has changed to the point that consensual sex can be considered rape. We normally think of rape as some guy dragging a girl into an alley, beating her, and sexually assaulting her. But rape also encompasses passing out at a party and somebody sticking their finger up your butt. Or having sex and then regretting it later. Or having sex while blacked out. You get my meaning. Rape, by definition, is not a violent sexual assault anymore.
And down playing this as a 'mild public relations gaffe' does not in any way make it less traumatic for the victim. He has, most likely, received a ton of death threats, been shamed, humiliated on national televisions world wide, been the brunt of countless jokes, picked on, bullyed, etc because of this incident. He probably does not even want to leave his house or look at the internet or television at this point.
I am sure that, if you were to ask him, he would probably have preferred to pass out at a party and have someone stick their finger up his butt than go through what he has been through with this 'mild public relations gaffe'.
[–]saekla3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Downplaying sexual assault and assuming some dude you've never met enjoys assplay? This is a fun discussion.
No matter how you or anyone else tries to equivocate, the nasty comments and other abuse this guy received are in no way equivalent to rape. Top-level comment implies rape and this gentleman's unpleasant experience are interchangeable; this is not the case. Don't want to deal with bullshit from the Internet? You can ignore most of it. At worst he'd be screening his phone calls and reporting threats against his life.
When someone, male or female, is raped not only has he or she been physically assaulted. Deeper emotional and psychiatric issues come into play. Some dude gets raped by a female or another dude. Do you think he feels confident, on top of his game, or at all masculine when he sees, confronts or thinks about the perpetrator? Another person has taken control of his sexual identity. This is not the case in the gentleman's circumstances.
This is a minor career setback for a brilliant and eccentric scientist at worst. Not at all as immediate and devastating as rape can be.

No attempt to dismiss rape here, I believe its all of our rights to wear what we want, but I do think saying that wearing little clothes doesn't encourage rape, while wearing a bowling shirt with some women on it "frightens off women from science" is a quite two faced statement. Either clothing does make a difference or it doesn't, you cant have your cake and eat it too.
I don't actually think wearing little clothing gives rapists any sort of excuse, but just the sheer blindness of these idiots getting outraged by a shirt yet not a lack of shirt.

Finding out that shirt was personally designed for him, that's awesome. He chose to place that in the spotlight as a thank you for what that meant to him.
Now think what these fem-nazis did to the woman that designed this search? How devastated do you think she was made to feel about her work being ripped apart by women and then making her friend who she gave her hand crafted gift, cry. Cry, cry for wearing her gift.

There was a link in the tublrinaction post. I clicked it. They're sold out already.
[–]brokedown-20 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
if he hadn't gone full retard and made that huge apology, I think the girl who designed the shirt would have sold a ton of them. It meant something to her when she made it, it meant something to him when he wore it, but now it means nothing.
[–]Shalashashka5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
All publicity is good publicity. She will probably sell more now, assuming she is even selling them. Heck, we should all buy a bunch to show our support.
[–]Ashken1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I wouldn't say that.
[–][deleted]63 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You know, sometimes it can be appropriate to blame the victim for something they wore and sometimes it isn't.
"You were raped because you wore a short skirt" is not the same thing as "People were offended because they think your shirt is sexist."
Regardless of whether or not you think the shirt actually was sexist (it made me roll my eyes, but that's about it) is not the point. If I wore a shirt that said "FUCK NIGGERS" on it, and got yelled at, do you really think that's a victim-blaming issue?
If I wore a cute dress and got raped, can you see how that's a little different? Can we at least find that common ground?
[–]emceegyver28 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The difference is wearing a shirt that says "FUCK NIGGERS" is directly and intently offensive. I don't see that as comparable to this shirt. If this shirt had a picture of a woman doing dishes, another picture of a woman sweeping the floor, and another of a woman hanging clothes to dry with a slogan on the back saying "Women at work". THAT would be directly and intently offensive.
If a woman was wearing a shirt with a bunch of half naked firefighters and lumberjacks, would anyone care? Probably not, they would instead just put her on some stupid "Fashion Police" show and laugh about her poor taste.
I agree the rape analogies are ridiculous, but blatant racist analogies are just as ridiculous.
[–][deleted]6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The difference is wearing a shirt that says "FUCK NIGGERS" is directly and intently offensive.
What if you somehow didn't know better? Would people being upset still be warranted? Would you consider it victim-blaming?
I honestly don't know how anyone could have thought that shirt was a good idea, on any level, for even a second. But whatever. Like I said, I rolled my eyes. I let out an audible "ugh", and that was it. And I think there are people more upset about this than they should be.
If a woman was wearing a shirt with a bunch of half naked firefighters and lumberjacks, would anyone care?
I bet they would have, and I can guaran-fucking-tee you that /r/mensrights would have.
But even so, that's not the point. Acting like feminists (or anyone; you don't have to be a feminist to think victim-blaming as feminists describe it is a real problem) are being hypocritical because they think blaming a woman for being raped because her outfit is too cute while they also think that wearing something offensive deserves a harsh reaction is stupid.
You can disagree with these people, but it isn't hypocritical. And that's all I'm saying.
[–]slideforlife10 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
"/If a woman was wearing a shirt with a bunch of half naked firefighters and lumberjacks, would anyone care?/ I bet they would have, and I can guaran-fucking-tee you that /r/mensrights would have."
no, unless the lumberjacks and firefighters were portrayed as being murdered or otherwise violently attacked, nobody would care.
[–][deleted]3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I've seen at least two upvoted posts concerning sexual depictions of men on clothing in this subreddit that indicates this is not true.
[–]slideforlife5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
double standards are an issue, but I'd hasten to guess that an attempt wasn't being made to censor them, just merely demonstrate that social demonization occurs only when its done demographically on men's behalf.
Who's censoring anything? Saying, "That shirt isn't appropriate, and it offends me a little, and I don't think you should wear it" is not censorship.
[–]slideforlife3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
in this case, it's not censorship but demonization. In the cases you cite, I'd bet that there was no opprobrium or devaluation regarding sexual depictions of men, just a reminder that it's hypocritical to indulge in it when the subjects are men, but to cast aspersions upon it when the subjects are women.
[–]kursdragon2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Got any proof or do we just have to trust what you say?
[–][deleted]-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm not going to bother digging it up, but I don't particularly care if you believe me either.
[–]finebalance10 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You're right and the analogy, as somebody pointed out in a higher rated comment, does break down pretty violently when you interrogate it.
He is no way deserves what he's getting, and the reaction is way too hysterical, but I have no idea how he thought this was a good idea either (nor how anybody else in that team didn't point it out that the Emperor was wearing a pretty shitty shirt).
He is no way deserves what he's getting, and the reaction is way too hysterical
I don't even know what he's getting, or how hysterical the reaction actually is. I think people are overblowing the hysteria way, way more than people are overblowing the deal with the guy's shirt.
[–]slideforlife1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
please tell me how you can equate the shirt he wore with a blatant racist epithet?
[–][deleted]8 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
They're both clothing. That's what we're talking about.
The point is that something you can wear sometimes should have negative consequences, and that the people against victim blaming based on what you're wearing aren't saying that literally nothing you wear should ever have negative consequences of any kind.
The post here is pointing out the "hypocrisy" of feminists (or at least, this particular feminist) for saying victim blaming based on clothing in cases of sexual assault is bad, but victim blaming based on clothing for other things is okay.
I'm pointing out that sometimes it is okay, as we can all agree on with my previous example. Whether this guy in this shirt deserves criticism (I think he does, though I also think some people overreacted) is a different point.
There is no hypocrisy here. And I find it not entirely surprising that /r/mensrights didn't bother to actually think this through.
[–]slideforlife2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
yeah, he deserved criticism along the lines of a muffled "what's he going to a bachelor party afterward?" rather than this screeching non-stop character assassination purporting to epitomize the very reason that women won't dare to enter the fields of science and technology.
[–][deleted]2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, that isn't happening. Reddit is pretending it's happening.
i don't think you're right, but I'll have to research it some more.
Personally, I have gone to jail for wearing the wrong kind of clothing. (i'll tell you about it some time if you are interested.) So i'm squarely in the camp of judging people's actions rather than their costumes.
Personally, I have gone to jail for wearing the wrong kind of clothing.
Eh. I've been lied to by MRM folks so often that I basically can't take any anecdotal evidence seriously.
So i'm squarely in the camp of judging people's actions rather than their costumes.
If I wore a shirt that said, "I hate men," would you feel the same way? What about a shirt that said "Rape of men doesn't exist?" What if I wore a shirt that depicted the rape of men?
Those are far more extreme examples, sure, but you'd judge me for wearing that "costume" and you damn well know it.
it's not anecdotal evidence (a paradox if I ever heard one), but the reason why I think criticizing an irrelevant aspect of this guy's public accessibility is way off base.
Like I said before, explicit and blatant statements of violence and harm are sure to arouse the ire of any decent human being. But this was none of that.

it's certainly different but no less funny.

I know you all can tell me what one of the biggest stories talked about this week has been. Kim Kardashian.
People are angered by this shirt situation that features half naked cartoon girls, when Kim has been praised in the media for her full/almost full nude exposé.
Now, I've got no problem with Kim Kardashian, my point is basically hypocrisy and double standards. It seems like in the list of news it goes Kim, Shirt, Rosetta landing.
[–]orangejuicenut18 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The difference is that Kim is a proud WoC choosing to show of her body while that shirt literally raped womyn by displaying them without xeir permissions.

[–]Marleyyy43 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I find it interesting that everyone is offended by this. This is the type of shit that women in the public eye have to deal with all the time. The media spends more time on what women are wearing and how they have their hair done than the message they are bringing. This guy wore an incredibly loud shirt to an event that would be viewed by a lot of people. Of COURSE people are going to mention the shirt - some will like it because he is not a stereotypical rocket scientist at all, while others will find it vulgar and crass for an event that should have full emphasis on the accomplishments at hand. I'm sure this guy was aware that people would notice his shirt, even hoped that they would as it has sentimental value to him.
[–]ZzDe07 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah women get criticized but is the criticism ever that they're a bad person for what they wore? So much so that they cried about it on camera?
[–]HappyMeerkat5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I disagree the women that often get judged on what they are wearing are often going to glamorous events in which they know they will be judged (mostly by other women) and dress to that occasion/ or make a statement by what they are wearing. in fact a lot of the women that are in the public eye are given clothes to keep up this appearance, that when they wear something that doesn't fit into this appearance i don't know "Jessica Alba in worn sweat pants" becomes a headline but only for women's magazines. essentially the people who get judged know they will be judged and in a way its mostly women who perpetuate this by caring what Megan Fox wears on the red carpet. outside of these events its unlikely that what they wear/ look like will be mentioned such as Emma Watson's UN speech.
this guy is probably not used to being in the media's eye and perhaps didn't even think about it or the repercussions, he doesn't usually have to dress knowing he will be judged by his peers, neither does he have the endorsements from say Versace, Armani etc. for him the big news was the landing on the comet, the shirt would be a background feature, not like on the red carpet when women stop to get their pictures taken to show off what they are wearing.
[–]Marleyyy0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm not talking about actresses or other entertainers. That is entirely different. I'm talking about women who are scientists, politicians, journalists, people who are in the public eye because of their careers which are NOT necessarily based on appearances or fashion.
[–]HappyMeerkat2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
i'm sorry i am not being obtuse but i really can't remember the last time i have heard of such a fuss about what a woman was wearing such as a scientist, politician or journalist that it made a massive news story. the only time i hear about what women are wearing is at glamorous media events or adverts selling magazines aimed at women.
but if you are talking about in general being mindful of what they wear to make sure they look professional, men have this also and as i have stated previously things change a lot at events and perhaps he did not know he was going to be in the public eye maybe he got told to wear what he feels comfortable in as if he had failed then he wouldn't have made media attention. he could have had a suite ready and waiting for him but he didn't have time to change we don't know all the factors, but overall it should be a suitable business attire vs not suitable business attire ( again we don't know all the variables) more than a rights issue discussion
Edit: added more.
[–]Marleyyy4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Sarah Palin are just the first three female politicians that come to mind that have faced various criticisms regarding their clothing that their male counterparts would never, and have never received.
Susanna Reid is a BBC presenter who has said that her producers have suggested she "wear brighter colors, dye her hair blonder, to nod more so as to appear more agreeable". Turn on CNN. Tell me that there isn't a requirement for the way that the women newscasters and journalists have to look to be on that show.
Your ignorance of these matters doesn't mean that it's not happening.
[–]kaihau3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You realize the men also have to look excellent, have certain hair, get makeup done, wear suits? There's a dress code and the anchors have to follow it. Your argument is so one sided that it's actually making me question my own sanity for reading your replies.
Put guys in barely any clothes at all like a female Fox News host and see how that goes down.

[–]HappyMeerkat1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
maybe its not ignorance but i'm instead not looking for this kind of news? for what its worth the female politicians i am from the UK so my focus is not on US politics in depth as this. again i'm not familiar with all this but at every workplace there is some conformity (but as i said i'm not famliar with all this) but you say they get criticisms but its telling that i havent but i didnt go searching for this news, but on various news aggregators i got this shadowed, and his apology over shadowed the actual event
edit: added more i know you could say what i said is ignorance, i just mean if you have a vested interest in something you are going to hear more about it and have news sources that may say more about it, where it may not make media that doesnt focus on such an issue to take another example sports, i may like watches, know about it in detail and look for developments on one watchmaker, because of that i hear details of another watchmaker but i wont know as much necessarily as someone who looks in detail and gets extra info on that watchmaker.
and politics is a very fickle occupation, woman obviously whilst having to conform to the expectations have more options of what to wear, but with that comes more risk i know this is just a film clip but even with men i would imagine this isnt far from the truth, so with more choices comes the higher chance of getting something wrong, for example in that video it says about shoes and tie colour if a male candidate such as Obama got it wrong they would have media speak about them
[–]FigNinja1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
To be fair, part of why women get more criticism on dress is that we have a lot more options when it comes to professional clothing. The male professional suit-and-tie uniform is not so varied. Very few men in politics deviate from it.
Only a couple of months ago, President Obama got flak for wearing a tan suit.
http://time.com/3214633/barack-obama-tan-suit/
Not this kind of flak, but all the man did was wear a suit that wasn't gray or navy blue and it made headlines.
[–]WordsNotToLiveBy0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But you failed to mention that women are the main critics of what other women wear. Women care about what they wear (in general) at greater degrees and in higher percentage of the whole than men. That's why there are magazines and TV shows catering to this.
The only reason it's spilled over to politics is because how much politics has become mainstream. Male journalists cover it because there is a female audience for it. I won't deny there isn't a negative element to it as well. Especially when the opposite side is criticizing what the candidate is wearing instead of their stance on the issues (eg. Hillary Clinton.) But even that has a level of politics behind it. The opposing party knows it will drum up criticism from people who care about that sort of thing.
Bottomline, you could post a picture of an attractive unknown or a celebrity on Reddit, and it reaches the front page, you'll find most of the guys making puns, off hand remarks, or compliments at how hot she looks. While the women will comment on her shoes or dress or how she did her hair and any other little detail. None of this is rocket science. Women judge other women as much or more than men judge women.
[–][deleted]28 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
i am all for fighting double standards, but comparing this to rape just doesn't fly. compare it to the reaction a woman would get wearing a shirt covered by sexy half-naked cartoon guys to a professional event. maybe the response to the woman would be less extreme, in which case a double standard would apply.
what he wore was tacky and inappropriate for the occasion. downvote all you want, that is a simple fact. it doesn't mean he is an asshole. it doesn't mean he didn't accomplish something absolutely mind-blowingly amazing. it doesn't mean he deserves to be verbally abused. it just means he made a terrible wardrobe decision, and some sort of reaction should have been expected. try wearing a shirt like that to a business meeting. man or woman, you won't get a good reaction no matter how talented you are.
[–]HappyMeerkat3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
the thing is he probably isn't media trained or used to being in a media/ business setting, perhaps this is just how he dresses day to day, he wanted to be comfortable and for him the biggest news would be the landing, after all you would think "landing something on a comet millions of miles a way would take the front seat in a big way rather than just a shirt he was wearing (which ridiculously over shadowed the event)
[–]newusername0114201416 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think everyone has an understanding of professional vs casual clothing by the time they hit his age, and if not they really should ask before going to an event like that. I'm a woman don't find the shirt sexist or objectifying however I don't think it was the best choice for the occasion. I think it would be comparable to a lady wearing a bunch of shirtless guys in dominatrix bottoms as a dress, it's not professional it's a statement piece.
true, but no one knows what was involved in the day, for all we know perhaps he wasn't meant to be seen and was told to wear something comfortable and it was a last minute thing, or maybe he knew all along we really don't know. i don't see it as a statement piece however i associate it in one of two ways:
1) a shirt that you either like/dislike from a friend that you promised to wear in the moment kind of like when you get a present and don't want to upset a person
2) a piece of clothing that you wear and then when you are older you look back and think what was i thinking wearing that its hideous! something everyone has encountered.
it is a bit silly that the shirt somebody was wearing whilst doing a historic feat has taken centre stage over said feat.
[–]newusername011420147 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Still when you're going to a professional event were professional clothing, when you're going to a public or casual event wear casual clothing. It would be like you showing up to work with that shirt on a day you were announcing your promotion, it's a bit tacky. Yes the shirt was created by a friend and I can defiantly understand wanting to show it off but the event was wrong for the attire. Also I doubt he didn't know what was going to be going on at the event. When you go to an event like that they give you a schedule and run down of what's going to happen.
That's where the argument should have ended for everybody instead of making it an argument for men's or women's causes.
i agree it was inappropriate, and whilst yes everyone knows this again we are assuming, that everything went to plan as when nearly any event is going on theres normally things that go wrong or are added to a schedule.
for example say it failed, then its unlikely that anyone would have heard about him, he would be wearing his shirt and no one would have cared. i believe the same also that the argument ( if someone wanted to begin one) should be whether it was business attire, not a mens/womens cause arguement
[–]newusername011420141 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I understand where you're coming from. I still think that even in the case that it didn't land you would still want to dress appropriately. When you go to those events particularly when you're participating in them you would want to dress in business class attire.
Also I wanted to say I appreciate how calm and polite you've been in this debate with me. I can't say I meet many people on Reddit who are this rational. It's actually enjoyable to see what your response is going to be.
yes again true, the only solution i can find is that £1 billion project so perhaps he was urged to make himself feel as comfortable and stress free as possible. i do agree however in practice to make it look professional business attire should have been worn, or at least been taken with him just in case afterwards.
and thank you, it has been nice especially considering on some subs (including this one) views can be polarised to the extreme in which things can become nasty but its nice to have sensible debates within them.
[–]untouchable_face8 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Wow, really? Anyone with common sense would know this is not appropriate for a public event (like this one) or in a work place...I don't know of many offices or businesses that would be okay with that. Other than maybe like a tattoo parlor or something of that vein. The whole thing is overblown, sure, but you are just grasping at straws with that one.
yet many of the best places to work are allowing more freedom in what people wear/ and making their life at work more enjoyable and stress free, so them offices probably wouldn't care. as i have said in another comment thread, we don't know what was planned if he was meant to be brought into the public eyes at events things change a lot due to circumstances, had he failed we probably wouldn't know who he was and the shirt would remain a non focal point.
I'm an engineer and I can wear jeans, t-shirts, even shorts. I could wear loud, tacky shirts. I wear flip flops or sneakers a lot. However, while none of this would be tolerated in your typical business office, there is still a dress code.
If I wore something really revealing, that would not be ok. And if I wore something with sexualized images, text, a political slogan, etc., that would also not be ok. I could expect a visit from HR. I wouldn't get fired over it, but I would be told that it was not appropriate for the workplace.
While most of the folks I work with would not have a single, solitary shit to give about it, the fact that it might offend some people is enough for HR to move to forestall that. It's a business that has to worry about liability and about making sure the work environment is comfortable even for people you or I might consider a bit overly sensitive.

Don't get me wrong. This isn't a shirt I would wear for a major announcement, but that said look at the dude. The shirt clearly fits his image well and wasn't intended as a sexist gesture. I think it's far more impressive that you don't have to fit the stuffy old image of wearing tweed blazers with elbow patches to be involved in cutting edge science! If anything he's a champion of access to the sciences, and a funny guy, who cares if he's wearing an edgy shirt. Christ almighty feminism, grow up.

Can't even deal with the sheer overreaction to this and every other thing that people pick apart because they have way too much time on their hands. I self identify as a true feminist every single day (meaning I believe in equality for all genders because THAT'S ALL FEMINISM IS SUPPOSED TO BE) and yet had I watched this scientists interview, his shirt wouldn't have even entered my radar.... I would have been more concerned with what he was saying. I'd look at this guy as evidence that all different types of people are ACCEPTED into science and not as a reason as to why women aren't comfortable entering the field.

By that rationale, Reddit as a whole believes Peruvian Morgan Freeman is more important than the rights of men.
You can see what reddit thinks of feminists by searching for "feminis" in the /r/videos thread. I found it heartwarming.

Feminism is the same as Nazism.
Fuck tumblr, and fuck feminists
I hate feminists so much. The way they can fabricate their own realities is frustrating.
Watching the video really made me fucking sad. THIS GUY IS KEY AND JUST LANDED PHILAE ON A FUCKING COMET, and he has to be worrying about this bullshit instead of pushing humanity forward. THIS IS HOW FEMINISTS HELP HUMANITY.
Feminists picking on this guy are spineless bullies who either can't see where they're needed or don't care because this will get them more publicity.
Can we end feminism please?
Boo fucking hoo, this man has accomplished more than any and all feminists ever will. Why don't you get offended and whine on tumblr some more you bunch of pathetic pussies. Or maybe you could, I dunno, quit bitching and accomplish something?
SJWs and feminists are pure cancer.

It's called raising awareness, not many of our initiatives have enough support to be directly actionable.
And if you don't like the content, why don't you pay something variants and be the change you want to see, instead of sitting back and tossing out vague criticisms which don't actually hold water.
[–]Willravel4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You had enough people to call in fake rapes to bring down an anonymous rape reporting system you deemed somehow oppressive to men. Hundreds of people making phone calls can actually do good in the world if they're directed constructively instead of destructively. What about finding a case where a man has unfairly lost custody of his children because a judge's hands are tied due to family court rules? 400+ people call the local news station, maybe a few thousand people sent emails (which would be no problem for /r/mensrights, which has a huge subscriber base and is quite active) and suddenly this man's story is generating local outrage and he's given the opportunity to tell his story to his community. You guys could be finding worthy justice causes to get behind, but you're too busy bellyaching about feminism to ever get there. Not only does it keep you from accomplishing anything of value, but frankly it's a distraction that feminism doesn't really see any value in tackling. We have bigger things to deal with, and you have better things you could be doing.
Demonizing feminism has not once, in the history of everything, gained men any rights. And, speaking as a feminist (gasp?), while I wouldn't wear a shirt like that in public, I don't really care that he was wearing that shirt. Instead, I'd talk about how Rosetta seems fine hiring qualified, capable, and skilled men and women to work on an important project, not taking into account gender, which is a good thing. If more companies and agencies were like that, we'd live in a better world.
[–]46n2arejustaheadofme1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Demonizing feminism has not once, in the history of everything, gained men any rights.
That's hilarious because the whole reason that MRAs have been demonized is because of intense labeling by feminists and SJWs of any people who disagree with them. Criticism of feminism is incorrectly demonized as misogyny.
And when criticism targeted at feminism is based on the actual words and actions of self-labeled feminists, NAFALT.
Feminism has demonstrably harmed the rights of men, and we're going to keep calling them on it.
Meanwhile, the entire MHRM gets criticized in the grounds that they don't do enough "real" activism.
At this point, counteracting the harmful narrative which has been supported by feminists, often through outright misinformation, in areas like DV, criminal and family law, is real activism.
Also you should look up relative privation.
And your example was pretty terrible. 400 reports are deemed false by a university, and then somehow every single one came from MRAs.
That's pretty troubling considering that means a few things.
Not all reports beyond obviously fake reports are considered serious. Some reports included faculty, and were deemed fake.
The system is vulnerable to false reporting simply because it's anonymous.
The disciplinary actions taken on students who are accused via this system are minor. These things should be handled by the police, and punishments shouldn't be dealt with only an accusation. Furthermore a system by which people can be accused like this is open to exploitation, and without the possibility of proving innocence.
Even if all 400 of those reports were from MRAs, the system being protested was pretty useless.
[–]Willravel2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And while you almost exclusively do that, the people you ostensibly have organized to protect go unrepresented, unprotected.
almost exclusively
If you look at the front page you'll see quite the opposite, while criticism of feminists' actions and policies is definitely there, there's a lot of other discussion.
people you ostensibly have organized to protect go unrepresented, unprotected.
That's a big claim to make, and we see it a lot. "Men's rights groups don't help men, they just hate feminists."
And as I've just explained, raising awareness about issues that effect men intrinsically involves ways in which the current narrative proposed is harmful to men. When that narrative is supported by feminists, it is worthy of criticism. When a widely accepted gender rights focused ideology controls most of the narrative about these subjects, information is the first step.
Furthermore this sub allows for discussion of issues that effect men. Believe it or not, even having the opinion that men face issues is looked down upon by most people outside of the movement.
Just think about that for a second, one of the largest issues faced by the MHRM is even getting people to move away from the male=privileged women=victim binary. Most people have never even considered it.
Raising awareness is meaningless if nothing ever gets done. Instead of being the Susan J. Komen of civil rights for men, maybe try being the Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins and actually address what it is you claim to represent.
No amount of shallow awareness raising could ever do as well as actually having positive accomplishments to point to as far as actually getting people on board.
Talk is cheap.
Shit on feminism all you want, but there are international organizations changing rape laws in India, a feminist state representative filibustering the unconstitutional closing of women's health clinics, a feminist teenager from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt who's changing Pakistani culture, Rwanda has gone from a deeply patriarchal country to one which has demographically consistent representation in government because of domestic feminist voices, and the push for improving women's healthcare in places with unequal healthcare has led to a 34% drop worldwide of maternal deaths during pregnancy and childbirth. And that's all just in the last few years. Not one of those victories came at the expense of men, and I can promise you that not one person involved in any of those efforts will give even the tiniest care about the MRM until you get off bashing feminism and actually do something for your own cause to demonstrate you're a civil rights group and not just angry guys on the internet.
Duluth model
That's exactly what I expected. Instead of addressing the fact the MRM does nothing to actually help men, you just make another shallow attack on feminism. Did you read my first post here? Here it is to refresh your memory:
"Fact"
"Shallow attack"
Another MRA comment, another opportunity to serve the interests of men lost due to obsessing about feminism.
You didn't look up relative privation did you?
relative privation
It's not worse problems, it's not doing what you say you're doing. It's in the name, 'Mens Rights'. So long as you do nothing to actually represent the right of men and just attack a different civil rights group, you're not a men's rights advocate, you're just another anti-feminist.
Prove me wrong. Go actually represent the rights of men, represent justice for men. I doubt it will happen, because you folks are so damned obsessed with feminism, but you always have the opportunity to stop lying about what you are.
In many ways being an MRA entails being opposed to certain feminist ideas,
You still have to back up your claim that MRAs don't actually help men.
Cool, now you're asking me to prove a negative and you're still doing jack shit to help men.
There have been plenty of men's rights conferences, r/MR itself has led to the creation of various men's support subs, and acts as a resource for men, and is used to aggregate news and discussion related to the rights of men.
You also keep discounting discussion and raising awareness on a sub, which has seen tremendous growth.
When people are so indoctrinated that even the mention of men's rights is taboo, the biggest challenge is changing opinions, the best way to do this is through information and discussion.
There have been plenty of men's rights conferences,
Saw that, actually. Someone was nice enough to record a decent amount of speeches. This may come as a surprise to you, but they all oddly seem to be about feminism. They never resulted in any campaign, any political or social action, and never impacted the lives of men as a class.
Saw the support subs, too. Instead of being about healthy environment for folks like abuse survivors, weirdly even men who talk about abuse end up talking about feminism. The non-MRA sub for DV, on the other hand, has ended up being a great resource for men and women who are victims, but had to create and often enforce rules about dragging anti-feminism into the subreddit. Ask the mods there if they have to remove comments from MRAs.
At the end of the day, the MRM isn't about men. It's about creating a phantom enemy and railing against it, and in the process sabotaging people who actually do fight for men who are facing mistreatment, because they get lumped in with you.
If you want to improve the reputation of your movement, do something good for men.
I have nothing more to say on the matter.
resubmitted and added NP link to adhere to /r/mensrights rules
Why is it bad to talk about feminism? When discussing the rights of men, the ideology which has dominated that discussion is going to be brought up.
The accusation that "MRAS just hate feminists" is hollow.

Are you saying he deserved it because of what he was wearing?
This is misrepresenting the context of when people say "you deserved it."
People often use that to blame women when they are harassed, because what the woman was wearing shows some of her skin that whoever judged to be 'too much' and therefore she's inviting harassment. It's about shaming women for how they show their bodies to the world.
This guy wore a shirt that some people see as objectifying women. The 2nd poster isn't saying he deserved it because of how he shows his body to the world, but because of the subject matter on the shirt.
If his shirt said "nazis rule, hitler did nothing wrong" then no one would argue against outrage. He would certainly deserve any ill will of approving of the nazis.
So the actual issue is here -- is his shirt objectifying of women? People have been arguing about 'sexy' images of women being objectifying or empowering for 30-40 years now with no real consensus.. even among feminists.
start by destroying Michelangelo's sculptures of nude women and then you can have the shirt.

Just posted this, word for word, on Facebook.
Factoid of the day. I was doing some calculations about the craziness of the Rosetta / Philae mission, and I came up with the following statistic. So, if we're talking about a tiny tiny bullet here, like about the size of a speck of dust small, the chances of hitting the comet is like hitting 3 grains of rice somehow joined together from 528 feet away, a quarter mile. Or about the length of a football field and a half. But that's not all. You're not sure where the rice on this football field actually will be, and you have to fire the speck of dust 10 years in advance, but by that time the rice could be anywhere in an area the size of 2 Manhattan Islands. And this guy, a great scientist who worked for years on this project, is getting ripped a new one because he wore a bad shirt. I guarantee you that the people complaining about this do not have any idea of the complexity of this mission. There's a tendency among famous mathematicians and physicists, such as Archimedes, Newton, Nash, Erdos, and others, to not give a fuck about their appearance because they're too engrossed in their work. Let's not get pissed off at him because he wore a "demeaning" shirt one day that his female friend made for him. Let's focus on the amazing work he did when working on this project.

The man accomplished a daring feat that had never been done before? I say let him wear what he wants. Hell, he was probably just trying to be a bit comfortable from all that work getting a fucking probe on a comet. Obviously these women don't see the grandeur of that, or simply don't care. It's a shame they brought him to tears. I would have defended the shit out of him.
Edit: [http://i.imgur.com/FaB9HjX.jpg](Here's the shirt for anyone wondering.) That shit looks fucking Badass! I want one now. I'd flaunt that shit in a feminist's face if they stepped to me. It looks like that shirt took a lot of effort and it's really artistic.
If they have such a big deal about women being objectified why don't they make some shirts with men on it? They could then walk around and wear it, and see that we don't give two shits, and maybe they'll get an idea about our perspective. Not sure if that would level the field at all, but still, it's not that big of a deal, especially in 2014.
This is one reason why I hate "professionalism". I don't think anybody should be reprimanded just for some fucking clothes. That's completely superficial. If the man has enough brain capacity to stand on one of the forefronts of intergalactic research, giving him a hand amongst others who are proactively helping humanity move forward each and every day, why does he also have to adhere to a fucking uniform whenever he wants to deal with it? It's not like this shirt nullifies the fact he helped make history. I wouldn't care if it was covered in swastikas.
[–]sarahkhill-3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I personally don't really care what that man wears, but this is a dangerous viewpoint. "He did xxx, so he can do whatever he wants." Just because someone is smart or a fantastic athlete or singer or what have you, doesn't mean they get a free pass. That would be a horrible way to gauge a person's worth or value.
Also, you can't really compare how men would feel about a woman wearing a shirt like that and how a woman feels. The dynamic is completely different. A lot of men love getting any attention from women, even if it objectifies them, as they haven't been objectified and sexualized every day since puberty or before.
[–]Gadgetfairy5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Read comments like that more charitably. Of course nobody is suggesting that being the lead scientist of a team furthering the knowledge of humanity (or an athlete, rockstar, or what have you) puts one above the law. This is about proportionality.
The dynamic is different, but it isn't the case that men don't know what being objectified feels like, they just are not allowed to talk about it. I also think that "(all) women are being objectified from before puberty every day" is a crass exaggeration, and frankly I think this does more to hinder women in academia than all actual sexism there does. Telling people "be afraid. Be very afraid!" every day of their life doesn't produce free, confident people.
[–]sarahkhill1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I can agree with you about the first part.
But, I'm not so sure about the second part. It is my perspective that every women has been objectified since puberty. It may not be correct, but I personally have not met a women that would say otherwise. It's just my limited worldview, though, I realize it may be wrong!
And in no way did I insinuate that women should "be afraid, be very afraid!" Not sure why you thought that.
[–]Gadgetfairy1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't think we can discuss objectification without a working definition of it. I'll just say that my spouse is a woman who would say otherwise (but that is anecdotal and not useful for generalisation either), and I want to clarify the following:
I did not mean to say that you specifically said that. I'm claiming that this happens generally. Women are told all their lives - sometimes with good evidence backing these statements, and sometimes without any evidence at all - that the world is out to get them. That seems to me to be a huge problem. We know of stereotype threat, for example. If you can prime women to do worse at maths by telling them that women generally worse at maths before having them take a test, what will a life-time of being told that you are always a victim, always need help, will never be taken seriously, and so on, do to women?
[–]mycatatemyface4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Nice one! Really funny! Oh, you!!!
If they have such a big deal about women being objectified why don't they make some shirts with men on it? They could then walk around and wear it, and see that we don't give two shits, and maybe they'll get an idea about our perspective.
Am I not supposed to interpret that a lot of men don't care about being objectified when the actual post I'm responding to expressly says that?

Speaking of SJWs not entering the STEM fields:
What caused Social Justice Warrior-ism.
/u/nixonrichard
Baby boomers with cash and authority but little wisdom forcing their children to go to college without any real identifiable desired outcome resulting in the growth of degree fields with little marketable value. The first wave of graduates became tenured professors in these same fields and quickly occupied all available academic positions. These fields continued to grow, however, with no identifiable occupational placement leading to angry and frustrated graduates who parlayed their newly found knowledge of historical injustice to apply to their own personal misfortune, and began to jointly develop a worldview where even the minutia of one's life is obstructed and degraded by deep and powerful social forces. This created a social Satan -- a mythical creature upon which misfortune may be blamed, and a convenient pretext for burning anyone suspected of worshiping this new Satan.
The Satan-of-the-Day made the mistake of wearing a shirt made by a woman. He was excoriated for his attire (irony alert), and crucified because he's a man. Pure and simple. Had a woman wore a similar print nothing would have been said by SJWs.

Criticising a professional's clothing choice at a significant event is not the same as scrutinising the clothes of a sexual assault victim. That comparison equates people tweeting about what they feel is an inappropriate choice with sexual assault. The fact that you think this is a strong comparison speaks only to how fucking absurd your reasoning is. These are not comparable instances on which you can apply the exact same reasoning; the fact that that even needs to be said is ridiculous.
who the fuck said anything about sexual assault except you knee-jerk reactionaries? the comparison is regarding being judged because of one's attire.

The answer will be that KK is choosing to do that. It's OK for women to use their nudity to celebrate the female form and gain attention but its not OK for men to do the same. Because sexual equality requires that you treat each sex in a different way, according to modern feminsm.

[–]Savipalooza2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That retort should only be used as a joke, not a serious argument, for hopefully obvious reasons. To use a more extreme example, imagine someone walking down the street wearing a shirt that said, "I hate [racial slur]." In that situation, I imagine many of you would say something to the effect of, "He deserves whatever he gets for wearing that." There are times when looking a certain way or displaying a certain message, whether on purpose or not, warrants a certain response. However, this concept is not equivalent to the notion that rape is an appropriate response to someone who dresses attractively.

This shirt is the sole reason I stopped respecting women. I was a feminist until i saw that shirt, but seeing the shirt taught me that women are only good for eye candy and shouldn't be taken seriously. /s

Who gives a fuck about that guys shirt?
[–]Akesgeroth2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Shit like this is why I refuse to use the term SJW at this point. I don't know who said it first, but they're neo-puritans.
[–]soggy_potato2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The real crime is that he was wearing a graphic t-shirt. The last time I wore one was in high school.
[–]Kuusou2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think he's a damn idiot to have a shirt on like that in a situation like that. It's fucking stupid, seriously. It's not just some random shit, and anyone who says it is is either straight up lying, attempting to cater to the masses here, or attempting to be PC in some way. He looks ridiculous.
Now, if you want to talk about if he deserves or should have been treated like he was, no, obviously not. I would expect his colleges to be annoyed or upset that he wore a ridiculous shirt, but people have no right to treat him like shit or act as though he's done something wrong to the public...

You can't expect a man that can land a spacecraft on a comet to be a normal person

If you were about to walk out the door to the pinnacle of his career...
Oh wait, you'll never reach the same pinnacle he did. Ever.
Let that sink in a moment. The odds that you'll ever accomplish anything in your entire lifetime worth even a hundredth of what he accomplished in his forties is so laughably slim that I have a better chance of throwing a dart in the air and having it hit his landing site.
Yet you feel you get to dictate what professional excellence is to him? You get to tell him how to act like an adult man?
I'll tell you how an adult man dresses. In a sci-fi Hawaiian shirt depicting scantily clad women with big guns.

The shirt was designed and given to him by a female friend. He wore it likely because he not only liked it but wanted to support said friend. Being harassed and treated like a sub-human by this feminist group, what they've done, does this not classify as...bullying?

The sci fi women on the shirt were the best part of it.
Otherwise it looked some old 70's pimp shirts i bring out on halloween.
I think he was trying to be the next space "mohawk guy".
Still he will sort of be that because we will remember him more than any other person on that team.

It was said in another thread, but the scientist Matt Taylor is known for his zany outfits, and has come to be recognized for his fashion as he is less of the rigid archetype we paint most scientists as.
He probably just got noticed for his wacky outfits and rolled with it, like Bruno Carlucci
I was mostly blown away that he didn't have some twitter statement or an apology issued or something. I don't really know what happens in these situations.
He was being asked a question about their project in a private setting on camera and when it came time for him to answer, he suddenly derailed to his apology.
Here is Matt in a Cannibal Corpse T-shirt
Here is Matt in a Hawaiian shirt
Here is Matt in the T-shirt that Zach Galifianakis wore in The Hangover (ps. see The Sopranos poster? Have you ever seen a tv series promote so much patriarchy?/s)
:D
(all 4 of these, one Google search of his name+scientist, common clothing)
Now here we see Matt sporting a one tone long sleeve. He is broken down in a room of his colleagues over something irrelevant to the subject at hand. Here is the accomplished scientist during HIS day.
I have to imagine that a lot of these scientists don't have their ear to the feminist pavement. It doesn't mean they wouldn't be sensitive to your issues, could you bring them up in a more professional or considerate manner. Must one be humiliated for justice to be had? How far did this really need to go?
The part that really drives it home is that he immediately understood the implications of his actions. Is he inherently wrong for wearing what he wore? No. It's what some consider artwork so get over yourself, maybe the woman who made it saw her characters as female empowerment through a comicbook forum (and Thor is sexy, right?).
However, he (more humble than I) immediately felt empathy and understanding to how some people might feel upset about his choice. Here is a man who would be totally receptive to someone merely pointing out to him what they find so troubling. His words during his apology were "I made a big mistake... I am very sorry about this." What he did wasn't even wrong, but he knew how upset he had made some people out there. Ironically, I think his humble apology fits the persona of someone empathetic enough to the changes in society that necessitate gender unity or the better understanding of one another.
If we're all in it for equality, shouldn't we at least be considerate of peoples feelings? You have an opportunity to inform and maybe teach someone of social change, and you approach it with burning pitchforks.
Feminism has its own agenda. It isn't about equality, at least not right here and now. They need criticism or they are doomed to repeat some mistakes they fight against.
[–]Gawrsh1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's the fact that right now was chosen for this that I find problematic.
Feminists wanted to make an example of him: stick his head on a pike (metaphorically speaking) for all to see, so no one would dare do this sort of thing again.
Him, his career and his achievement were simply props for feminists to deliver a "Teachable Moment" to other scientists.

[–]dbx990 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The issue is not one of feminism but of lack of good taste. Every great event deserves to be treated with respect. The shirt was a distraction from the focus. That scientist showed poor judgment by wearing something that would pull focus away from the comet landing and from the team effort and toward himself and his shirt.
So I think this shirt issue is stupid. Really stupid.
But people legitimately comparing "you deserved to get raped" with "you deserved to get criticized for a shirt you were wearing" are insane...
This isn't familiar and not comparable at all...there is no hypocrisy here...
how about comparing "you deserved to get 'cat-called'" and "you deserved to get criticized for a shirt"? Not too insane in my view at all if you can put the old stand-bye of the rape-card down for a second.
[–]Tumblr9gagredditor6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
They still aren't really comparable situations. One is about finding something to be in poor taste/offensive, and the other is about people being inappropriate towards someone.
[–]slideforlife0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
which one? because I find the freedom and liberty expressed by sexual-entendre much more refreshing than some censoring fascist arrogant scum. One says yes and the other says no. I prefer yes.
[–]Tumblr9gagredditor5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
He's free to wear it, but others are free to say "dude, wtf are you doing wearing that shirt? This is supposed to be a formal event."
100% agree. and others are free to say to those others, fuck formality, this guy just did something so incredibly exceptional that it wouldn't matter if he stood up on the podium in a crotchless tutu and did pirouettes.
It's still not comparable at all...I'm not a feminists AT ALL but this argument is insane dude...
Being a public figured and having people tell you might not want to wear a shirt because of the message it sends and being sexually harassed is not comparable at all.
You're right, it isn't comparable at all. Being told that wearing a specific shirt is an affront to civilized society and being told the clothes you wear are sexually provocative are world's apart. The first one seeks to cloister and dampen freedom of expression. The second seeks to stimulate it.
[–]Mitschu1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
How about "You deserve to get harassed for what you wear" with "You deserve to get bullied for what you wear?"
Isn't that what Slutwalk is about? How no matter what you wear, no matter how revealing or inappropriate or sexual, you shouldn't be the victim of repeated, unwanted, hostile attention?
I'd say having your biggest professional accomplishment sullied and disgraced, being harangued and abused to the point of tears, having a bunch of people start accusing you of literally raping them, and all for not dressing to their superficial and hypocritical standards is a little bit worse than being catcalled for wearing a revealing shirt, but hey. The two aren't comparable at all, right?
Do you really not see the difference between a public figure wearing this and an individual being harassed? These are two insanely different dynamics. Things don't happen in a vacuum people here need to stop scratching for every little bit of possible hypocrisy...
If this happened to him as he was just walking on the street then yes it is awful. But no he was on TV and new he was going to be on TV and chose to wear this. He is 100% worthy of critique.
Do I think the reaction to him was too much and shitty. YES. Do I think is comparable to sexual harassment. NO!
You're turning a legit argument in to a joke and making men's rights look idiotic...

again with the "inappropriately" business. If the choice is one or the other, the world needs expertise about a gizillion to the gizillionth power more than it needs appropriate dress.
