I mean, why wouldn’t I? The alternatives available to me sound worse, I don’t have a trust fund to live off of. I work less hours in my career as I would have to in a low wage job to afford to take care for myself, plus I have extra money so my husband and I can retire, and for fun things. Also, I enjoy my career, it’s mentally stimulating, I got into the field as a hobby as a kid so getting paid well for it is great.

Are you seriously suggesting men only develop their career to get sex?? You don’t think they like money or a nice place to live or want expensive toys or to give their children a good life or anything? lmao

I got into tech because of

Mental stimulation. Good working conditions. Well paid.

I got into leadership in tech because I wanted the power. It wasn't the money or the career progression. I was just frustrated with the people who were in my current position previously and having to manage upwards.

I also think the world can be quite cruel. People have a horrible time at work, especially if they have bad management. I care deeply about the people in my team. In a leadership position I can shield the people I manage from some of the stresses of the world and make their experience in the workplace a positive one.

I also wanted to stop any psychopath, sociopath or selfish, career centric individual from taking the role. I believe people who aren't psychopaths have a moral duty to keep psychopaths from leadership positions at all costs.

Without power you can't achieve moral goals and live at the whim of others.

human nature has a little craving for competition in it. it feels good to achieve a goal.

i know that i want kids someday, and i would never have them unless i could support the child myself without the help of a partner. your partner can just up and leave you out of nowhere, strike you, or cheat, and i don’t want to be eating kraft dinner and stuffing my kids’ feet into shoes that are too small for them if child support comes in tardy or not at all.

I will speak both for me (a man) and my wife.

I knew I liked tech from a very young age and going through highschool, going to study computer science in college was the natural road. So basically, for me, career choice was passion. The fact that it happened to be a very well paid career is a big bonus. I am motivated in developing my career by this passion, but also the money that comes with it.

For my wife, it is a little bit different. She also studied computer science and we met while we were in college. She grew up dirt poor and fought to get out of poverty. She didn't have an exact plan on what career path to follow, but a relative (that worked in IT) suggested to her to follow this path. Her fight to get out of poverty made her strive to always do her best whenever possible and, although she is no longer poor, the drive to always do her best got instilled in her and continues to do so. But again, money does play a big factor.

Our finances are merged now and we have similar incomes. Our spending is not that big considering our incomes as we only spend about 75% of one income. The other income and the 25% of the first income goes into savings and investments. Basically, if one of us decides that we don't want to work anymore, we can still live a confortable life on one income, but out long term financial prospects will take a big hit.

Gulilt motivates me to work harder. I am in agriculture as a field and the fact that we still can't feed the world is making me sick. Long story short my main goal in life is feeding the whole humanity. GM crops can be modified to have more nutrients than their natural counterparts. I am currently in uni but once I finish with my degrees I plan on starting my own seed production facility, I have some hefty inheritance and I am well connected in my current community.

My main goal is feeling less guilty, kinda selfish but I'm just being honest. I can bullshit you that I'm this great human bla bla bla but thats just bullshit.

Maybe YOU see your career that way; i see my career as a means to an end: make enough money to retire and be able to pursue my nonmoneymaking interests for the entirety of my day instead of going to work.

I also see life as needing something. You have to ascribe meaning to life. If you're Elon making electric cars. Me? I'm an engineer, i make things better. A teacher? Educating our youth. A cop? Protecting and Serving.

If your sole reason for having a career is to get a woman i pity you and your coworkers for you making them miserable. Not to mention i only date self sufficient women.

I didn’t pick my job to attract women. I chose my career because it’s what I enjoy doing. Choosing a job in order to attract women seems like thirsty pandering to me and that’s something that I try to avoid in general with my approach to women. I haven’t done that kind of thing since I was a desperate virgin and even then I had too much self-respect to do it that much.

I am motivated because I made my hobby my job. I turned into a career animal because of the competition and I needed to be the best and wanted my customers and the companies I work for to depend on me.

At some point it also clicked in my head and the financials turned into a game. When you make x-times the money you need to live and you look into consistently growing that by renegotiating just for negotiations sake and you invest to make more every month without depending on your job.

Honestly? Nothing. I work in the S part of STEM except the pay is garbage (doesn't matter, I guess, since I probably won't have kids or even a relationship) and I'm too disillusioned with academia to even care about moving into leadership positions or whatever. I should probably look for a different field but 31 feels old for a radical change plus leaving right now would screw over my lab very hard due to some upcoming projects...

For some reason I never got any White Male Privilege Patriarchy checks in the mail and have been a working man since age 17 except for the time I spent in full time study. Aside from a brief medical benefit hiatus, I have worked all of my life.

That's my privilege. To work, make money, and pay lots and lots of taxes for the less privileged people who can't or just won't work.

When people say I have (what little) I have because of my gender or skin color, it puts me into a blood-boiling rage that makes fortunate I am not usually holding a blunt object or bucket of acid at that particular moment.

I just press my finger nails into my palms, smile and carry on.

I got 50 hours in so far this week. I think I'm going to say fuck it and call it a day.

TL;DR I think people should get a career and work hard. Not sit around internet forums and piss and moan about "living wages" and oppression. Get some education. Get some experience. Get a career. And stop being so goddamned entitled.

Still a student, but for me the motivation would most likely be mostly my own survival - wanting to have a roof under my head and having something to bring on the kitchen table (for myself, obviously), even though I would be more than ready to tighten the belt. Perhaps an another side motivation would be having more funds for my passion projects or some pop-sci magazines.

I would not call myself having a 'career', just a well paying relatively easy job (IT). I'm very happy it's not a high-stress, life-eating career, as it would kind of defeat the purpose - I work so I can do cool stuff outside work, if work would be so demanding that much free time is impossible, what's the point? Unless that's a Very Fulfilling And Cool Career, like in a space program or something. But I'm a dropout from physics at university, so that's kind of closed for me, and to be honest I was never driven enough. As for corpo type of career, managing people at boring meetings etc, I loathe this type of activities and passed on team lead position because of the load of bullshit talks and making charts about progress and whatever it entailed. Coding pays good enough and not going Full Dilbert is also something of value.

I was made redundant last year and went on one of those Job center training things, I was pleasantly surprised they really hammered home getting a job you'll enjoy in a sector you want to work in rather than just ' get a job asap'.

I'm focussing on being a mum at the moment so I don't have the time and energy for a career, hopefully one day though.

I love my job at a school as an individual needs assistant.

It works around child care, time wise.

The staff and management are really kind and supportive - I feel valued as a staff member.

I'm outside a lot.

The atmosphere is always vibrant and energetic - I think the kids are just great.

Downside is it's really exhausting both mentally and physically.

I need the money to maintain a house in which to have sex in. I need money to go to the bar to buy drinks where the women are. Women don't (usually) sleep with broke men, so money is needed. Might I point out that women set the rules for dating and sex which means that men are merely reacting to the rules women have set. If careers as a vehicle to achieve sex is the pursuit then it's simply as an extension of men reacting to the rule of the sexual marketplace.

To answer your question, in my early 20's I chased this path moved up the corporate ladder but at what cost? Then I turned 26 and I realized one great truth - never chase a woman and never do anything because you want a woman. Live your best life and live on your terms - there isn't pussy in this world that is worth the happiness you sacrifice by being chained to a desk.

Are most people here older such as Gen X or Boomers? Because with younger people it seems like careers for life are a yesterday thing. These days to start with you're lucky to have a career at all instead of a dead end temp job and if you do have a career very likely in 10 years time you'll be doing something different. Jumping from career to career if you're lucky, or job to job if you're unlucky seems to be the new normal. Personally I prefer this because I have no interest in doing one thing for the rest of my life.

I develop myself employment wise so I can learn new things and eventually become self employed and not slaving away to some old douche for the rest of my life. That and money to buy stuff with.

I enjoy working, learning and building my skills. I'm currently a manager and I got into that because I really enjoyed supporting with management style activities, in terms of coaching and supporting my colleagues etc. I also pick things up really fast so it turns out I'm actually really good at guiding people through changing processes etc. I love when I've got new people in and I've been able to help and support them and see them really grow in a role.

I've had quite a few changes in types of teams I manage (in terms of what they do) which for me is enjoyable because I love throwing myself into a new challenge and learning everything I can about it. I want to keep developing my career and move on up because I want to keep learning and growing my own skills and take on new challenges. I know a fair few people who have just stayed where they were and basically stagnated because they've become bitter and cynical about the job and now just put the least amount of effort in, and I don't want to get to that point.

Also in general I work so I have money to out a roof over my head and buy food and go on holiday etc.

I grew up poor, didn’t want to live like that forever, so I got an education and job in social work, helping people which is something I like doing ( though it definitely comes with its challenges) but also getting paid well to do it because it’s a government job with a good pension.

So for me: financial security and doing something that’s has some meaning for me.

I want to provide for myself and people I love and care about. I want to be able to afford the lifestyle I want, to have good working conditions, to have access to good medicine, to be able to travel, to have good-quality things that I don't have to replace too often etc.

There's also a part of being fulfilled. I want to have some skills that are on demand and that make me a wanted professional. To bring something useful and important to this world, but in this case work isn't the only way to do so.

I've been working as a tutor and also worked in a language school. It was great in terms of fulfillment, but pretty terrible financially, so now I'm getting my second degree in IT, because it can give me the opportunities I want.

Edit: and, well, I was raised with the idea that I have to be able to support myself and my kids if I have any. A husband can leave, cheat on you, get sick, lose his job, die. Or you can have kids without a husband, stuff happens.

Money, growing up I knew that I just wanted to be rich but without the fame/ excessive attention , I got a track and field scholarship and decided to going to the tech field, because math and a lot of the stuff associated with engineering/ computers always came fairly easyish to me. I interned at the same company every summer that I was in college so when I started off there officially they started off paying me as if I had been there for 4 years so I was making really good money right off the bat and I've been there ever since and it's afforded me a great financial lifestyle even if the president is trying to tax my bracket out the ass 😂

And even though obviously money helps with women, I can't say that they were a factor in my decision

I think the fundamental reason for both sex’s pursuing a career is the same: to be financially stable.

However where they differ is in why. Men do it because largely there’s no other option. Unless you’re a young chad, there’s no sugar mama waiting for you.

For women, it’s more about freedom. If a woman makes her own money, she is less likely to sacrifice her happiness and ideals to keep her husband or BF supporting her. Its her freedom. Its a source of confidence. A promise, that if she leaves her man she could still live a financially good life.

My career is extremely intellectually stimulating, I use my clinical reasoning to solve problems and work collaboratively with clients. I meet people from all walks of life and it gives me a sense of purpose. I wouldn’t have a relationship with someone who saw their job as merely a way to gain status/sex/money.

Had a career hiccup in 2011 when my division in a firm dissolved but got back into it with another organization a few years later. I work in governmental and legislative affairs.

I enjoy my field and I’ve always been interested in it since I was a child and I feel empowered when I can make real contributions through my skill or work. It sounds really fucking corny, but it really does feel rewarding to look at something you created or contributed to.

I’m privileged enough that what I do also pays well and I want to make enough to help my family get ahead and provide for my grandma so she can retire. Out of all of my family I was the only was born and raised in America and a lot of sacrifices were made by my so I could pursue what I wanted because we didn’t have a lot of money, and nothing was ever asked of me except for that I help my cousins go to school and university.

I wouldn’t really have anything else to do? And I don’t think I could hack it as a SAHM. I hate housework, not too fond of children, and I don’t need nor want there to be a third party standing between me and my money.

Lastly, I like shopping, traveling, and staying alive and you need money to do all of these things.

It's never really not been an option. I'm not the kind of person who can work a job just for the cash... I need to actually give a fuck about what I'm doing. I'm super passionate about my field and frequently do stuff for free simply because it's a way to get involved.

As far as development goes, it's to make it easier to get positions I'm more interested in. As of right now, what I'm looking at requires both more experience and more education. I may be 35 and a little behind, but I'll get there eventually.

Primarily to become independent. I'm in a bit of a tricky situation where I might end up getting disowned in the future (I'm in university right now, parents are helping to pay) so I want to make sure I'm stable before that happens. I've always been fairly academically motivated and it mostly still stands. I'm in a tech program and hoping to FIRE around my late 30s so I can start achieving bigger life goals, like travelling, starting my own charity, etc.

I'm not currently interested in getting into a relationship, but when I (hopefully) do in the future, I don't want to rely on my partner for things like income, as that would make me dependant on them, and having a decent enough career is a way in which that helps.

37f married with 2 kids and my motivation to develop my career is largely based around wanting to be a partner in this whole thing. I am lucky to have fallen into a career path that is relatively flexible and high paying with a pay scale based entirely off the work I am able/willing to do. I was well established before marriage/children and able to drop comfortably to part time when the kids were young, and have recently returned to full time without missing anything in either my work or home life.

My mother worked because she wanted to prove something to someone related to low self worth (and her priorities were as follows: work > husband who was not my father > house/vacations > me). My mother-in-law stopped working as soon as she duped my father-in-law into being the sole provider and has never made good money since even after kicking him to the curb for not being able to both provide for a family of 4 on his own and also be home and present in their lives at all times (go figure). I am somewhere in between. We could live off his salary alone, but it’s important to me that he doesn’t feel like all of the bills are his burden alone. That’s my biggest motivator at this point.
