the 'douchebags' could have had the girl, they just didn't want her for more than sex. that's how she ends up with the nice guy in the first place. the reason she views the guys before as douchebags to begin with is that they just didn't value her, they weren't necessary bad people or undesirable partners in general. when the douchebags are ready to settle down, they will do so on their own timeline and get a girl that's probably more desirable than her.

meanwhile the nice guy is getting an older version with more baggage who's often less giving and they can't just text her 'wyd' at 11pm whenever they want to get laid. they have to take her on dates, romance her, maybe pay her bills and so on. that's not what men would consider winning at all, since other men got a more desirable version of the girl with less effort. if you're the nice guy who struggles at a younger age, just pick a girl that hasn't been ran through, although this dichotomy is pretty simplified to begin with. i haven't been an asshole to women since i turned 20 or so and i haven't had problems getting laid or relationships. i'm sure as hell not the only guy.

This is a false dichotomy.

On a long enough timeline, the vast majority of men end up married. There's no reason to believe the minority of men that don't also happen to be the not-nice ones. Nor is being nice or not a static value—you can be nice in one relationship and not nice in another, depending on a ton of independent factors.

Anyway, being "nice" probably increases the odds of sustaining long term relationships, since it generally reduces conflict. However, each man can define "winning" however he wants, in accordance to his own values. LOTS of men want to be the guy who women hook up with—nice or not, that guy also usually ends up settling down eventually.
