Online dating in a nutshell; heads men win, tails women lose

My wish for 2021 and beyond is that more women realise that they don’t have to put up with callous, selfish behaviour in their relationships.

One smart Grandma! I came across this post on LinkedIn, and the comments were full of PickMes and men saying that this is “misandrist and dishonest”. Ladies, looking out for yourself is in YOUR BEST INTEREST.

The number of comments saying that the man acted this way “because he really likes her”. 🙄 this is not about affection - what you’re seeing here is the very early stages of controlling and abusive behaviour.

This is the double bind society presents women with when we try to speak the truth about male pattern behaviour. If we call it out, it’s misandrist. But if we don’t call it out and end up getting harmed anyway, it’s our fault for not seeing the signs. Head men win, tails women lose. Again.

Her husband’s girlfriend moved into their damn house with them, and she now has to listen to them multiple nights a week? She’s tormenting herself and writing articles about how miserable she is, yet is still trying to convince herself that she’s just being a cool and accommodating wife? Lady. Recognize your self-worth. Please.

[–]shaezammFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And clearly that putrid “husband” of hers is making her feel less than. Poor woman, she’s unable to see her self-worth anymore. So very sad

I couldn't finish reading it, when she described her self as ''boring'' and ''ball and chain'', I was so triggered. Her self esteem is zero.

[–]found_thissubfinally 89 points90 points91 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Her self esteem is now in negative scale. 0 is being too generous.

Such a bleak view on being married.

Oh wait...she's technically not married (just legally). She and hubs are just cheating on each other and putting a pretty bow on it.

This is honestly so sad to read. I hope she discovers her own self worth and realizes she’s in an incredibly abusive and toxic situation.

I can’t believe they’re raising a child in that environment

I couldn’t stop myself and read some of her other posts, I really hope that it’s all fiction.

[–]AlegalHumanFDS Newbie 207 points208 points209 points 4 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

I actually read an entire askreddit thread where the OP wanted to know what it was like to be a child raised in a polyamorous household and to my surprise not a single person who answered had a good experience

[–]BusinessTwistofLimeFDS Newbie 55 points56 points57 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's so funny because in The Ethical Slut they portrayed children growing up in a polyamorous household as the modern-day loving supportive village necessary to raise a child. More proof that it's propaganda and not actually steeped in any kind of truth. That book always struck me as people copping out on their relationships and not doing the work required to stay in love/cherish their partner.

The authors even suggest just giving the book to your partner that you want to open up your relationship with. Like no discussion. Just give them a book that essentially says, "surprise! I can't have a conversation with you about this and I don't want a divorce, but I DO want to sleep with other people. Teehee. Hope you still love me!"

[–]Noemie_MathildeFDS Newbie 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Poly propaganda

[–]AlegalHumanFDS Newbie 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah see… my surprise came from this: most times there’s discussion of something depraved that’s sexual on Reddit, there are lots of voices in support of the thing by the people who practice it. So I was sort of expecting some people to be saying they had a good experience, even if in their comments you could tell at best their experience was mixed. What stunned me is not even a single comment said it was a good situation.

Sort of shows how the people who are impacted but not in charge will be more honest. I think it’s a coping mechanism for people who feel choiceless to try to see the upside in something they’re doing out of pressure or financial obligation even if it kills them inside, it’s actually quite an admirable quality of the human spirit. But it does mean that testimony on a thing’s merits from those that practice it out of obligation isn’t likely to be super accurate. After all, self-gaslighting is just a means to survive.

Makes me think we should give more weight on issues like the merits of sex work (including onlyfans accounts and similar) to the accounts of caring bystanders, like children. Like they clearly benefit from their parents making money but I think can provide more honest testimony about whether it was net worth it.

[–]Throwaways_4_dais 33 points34 points35 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I saw that thread! It’s so screwed up. I guess I’m not woke enough to be ok with parents neglecting or abusing their kids in the name of fucking.

[–]cupittycakesFDS Newbie 75 points76 points77 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder if it's because the parents are more focused on their own sexual satisfaction rather than focusing on raising the children

[–]rainbowhelixFDS Newbie 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was the part that made me scream. She's talking about being able to hear her gross husband w/his "girlfriend" at night. Kids are not stupid. They know what's going on, and this is so disgusting.

Interesting that Molly is living with them so the author’s husband can have extramarital sex on demand even in quarantine, but author’s other male partners live elsewhere…wonder why 🧐 (/s)

[–]Jandi18FDS Newbie 227 points228 points229 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She needs to move her other lover in(assuming she does have one) because this is looking like a polygamy not polyamory.

[–]United_Recording_975 237 points238 points239 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I try to be more empathetic to women, but this is just pathetic in every sense of the word. It's one thing to let your husband cheat on you. It's another to let that girl move in and agree to "trade" him so you both get to fuck him. And it's another thing to write about your sad little situation & try to twist it and make sure everyone that reads thinks you are "winning".

Genuinely pathetic.

[–]TikiTikiTata-chalalaFDS Newbie 86 points87 points88 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ok, so isn't this how all of the stories start where the husband murders his wife and kids so his mistress can have it all? This is not ok

[–]WeeeeezhFDS Newbie 57 points58 points59 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I struggle with that as well. Whenever I meet new women in uni and try to make friends they show extreme pick me behaviour and I'm just so over it. So Exhausting! Luckily I know some that are different but they don't live near me.

A 'friend' of mine has literally no standards or communication with her boyfriend and I sway between empathy and losing respect for her. :(

I read a lot of Chinese literature and this legitimately sounds like it’s lifted from a Chinese novel. She sounds exactly like a wife whose husband has a concubine - because he literally does! How someone chooses this lifestyle is beyond me.

There are, indeed, losers in polyamorous relationships.

That loser is always a woman.

People need to get a fucking clue and cut this shit out. The men in polyamorous situations are often not ever prizes, either, so they're fighting for what again?

Jfc that’s sad as hell. If you have to try to convince yourself that it’s ok as much as this woman is, it’s not for you. I know it’s not PC to say, but I’ve never understood poly relationships and I think they’re stupid

What a low bar for a relationship. If that's the happiest I can expect to be in polyamory, no thanks

The top comments at least were like "this is sad and not OK" and then some Pickme-ass women were like "Oh no this isn't sad this is the beauty of liiiife and just relationship concessions we need to make"

Sis what

[–]lostmilleniaFDS Newbie 100 points101 points102 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you are making concessions why are you even in this relationship?!

[–]28Improved 62 points63 points64 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seriously. Them tripping over themselves to justify how it's healthy and "beautiful" and just part of life to feel inadequate, ignored, competitive was just...sad. Pathetic and really sad. I felt bad for what they've been through that made them defend this because they think it's better than being alone

[–]abirdoftheskyFDS Newbie 89 points90 points91 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have a poly friend-of-a-friend whose justification is literally that she’s a jealous person and would rather he cheat in front of her than behind her. Oh and would I like to join her bookclub for going through The Jealousy Workbook??

Like, no. No I wouldn’t because I’m actually not a jealous person and I’m in a completely secure, trusting monogamous relationship and that’s not actually an impossible ask and the monogamy is mutually desired.

Yes, there will be times where relationships will require work and conscious nurturing (I’m thinking like in the case of death, unemployment, the real ups and downs of life) but they shouldn’t Be Work. Why be in a relationship that basically requires you to do continuous therapy as your hobby?

Good god, what a shitshow…

Thanks OP for posting this. So whenever I feel fucking dumb I can read that article and realize that dumber people exist.

She’s literally being cucked.

[–]StatisticianOk767 49 points50 points51 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She's not dumb, she's being abused. She was probably targeted for it, and finessed into it, and literally has zero people to even acknowledge her reality.

Gaslighting works on everyone; you weren't dumb, neither was I, neither is she. I got out because of this sub, I hope she does, too.

By the way, being the only female in a throuple with 2 men was also a fucking nightmare. My husband coerced me into sleeping with people and letting him watch, which I hated so much only did a few times. When I found a boyfriend, they ended up siding with each other and being super buddies, and my BF ended up trying to talk me out of my divorce and thought it was fine that my husband had been refusing to work for 6 years. Later found out my husband was using my posts to catfish men, and my bf had run around town telling everyone about his new 'married girlfriend', which boosted his clout, and made my social life constantly fucked up and awkward because he and I are in the same industry. People would approach me in professional settings literally like they could get a free blowjob in the hallway. If I'm married and have a boyfriend, they seemed to think, I was open season and I literally should have no excuse to turn them down.

This is why that jealousy bullshit they espouse is so stupid. She’s literally being tortured everyday but forced herself to deal with it because polyamory is above jealousy. These people always seem so miserable. I’ve been in happy monogamous relationships with little to no jealousy before. You don’t have to go through this.

[–]lilyischillin420 153 points154 points155 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

[–]Top-Assistance8802 52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Guaranteed he's cheating on both women, and doesn't make either of them orgasm. Clearly he's too broke to buy a seperate house for his girlfriends/fuckbuddies.

Yet, the women stay. I gotta say, its the woman's fault for choosing this level of abuse and undignified behavior.

I have been there and I escaped from a similar situation and that mindset of accepting it.

Imagine the difference in the amount of self respect a woman renders herself when she is emotionally, mentally, financially and spiritually stable. Confidence is key, and its so important for women to learn to build it up like a fortress that can't be broken. Its must be worked on everyday. Confidence is having the ability to choose the best things for yourself, include a man that loves, adores and respects you. Confidence is also having the ability to vet properly.

When you have high self confidence you don't end up with a low value man with low self esteem. Like attracts like.

[–]FDSDedicated 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree. I wonder if he gave her a choice between divorce and poly, and she was so afraid of divorce she agreed to poly. And then I imagine, what if she had the courage to leave him? Think of the freedom of coming home to a drama free house, never being kept awake by the sound of your husband rutting with another woman, never wasting your precious time on earth feeling anxious and hurt by a dynamic that's always right in your face?

Also, how much do you want to bet he's going to leave her for the other woman? He has already scolded his wife for hurting her feelings.

[–]StatisticianOk767 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

"Yet, the women stay. I gotta say, its the woman's fault for choosing this level of abuse and undignified behavior."

Um, no. She's being coerced and gaslit, she isn't choosing this, he's fucking her up on purpose.

Can we talk about it being the man's fault, and how it is now a "flex" for men to coerce his partner into shit like this. Clearly, he is getting off on humiliating her and causing her pain, and then talking bullshit theory and acting wounded with a straight face, and where else but on THIS sub can you literally find ANYONE talking realistically about poly?

"Like attracts like" justifies abuse and frankly isn't true. Abusers target victims that are vulnerable; and they say shit like this to delude themselves that the woman deserves it. Bullshit. Only abusers feel entitled to sexual arrangements their partner clearly hates. The polyamory talk about "working through jealousy" normalizes this kind of abuse, it reminds me of the whole "overcoming last minute resistance" red pill thing.

[–]shockingupdateFDS Newbie 115 points116 points117 points 4 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

SO miserable. The poly community is not in any way aBoVe JeaLouSy; it’s full of insecure, codependent people of all genders who can’t handle being alone with their own thoughts, so they collect partners like Pokémon cards to avoid ever having to work on themselves. (After all, who has time for self-reflection when you have a job and four long-term relationships to juggle? 🤡) What I’ve found from my short time attempting solo poly is that everyone gets jealous, has fights, and gets into it over new partners, but no one talks about it for risk of damaging the poly reputation any further. I’ve never felt more unwelcome than I did watching a guy I was tentatively interested in “negotiate” with two of his girlfriends over what days I should be allowed to see him.

There’s also zero accountability in most poly relationships. Break one partner’s trust and, well, might as well throw that one out since you’ve got two more! One poly guy I know seems to be constantly reeling from his last “closure talk” with an ex-partner but never appears to have learned anything from them. Every time I see him he’s still the same needy person he was before. The only thing that changes in his life is his roster.

[–]VmchikRuthless Strategist 92 points93 points94 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes it’s so funny to me that they think they’re so above monogamous people because they work through jealousy when what they’re doing is actually practicing self soothing in traumatic situations constantly. It’s not healthy to always need to have conversations and communicate because you’re always being triggered. You would think the move would be to move away from their triggers but they have some kind of martyrdom kink where they need to deal with that pain to feel like they’re evolving. I’m fine though. I’ll stay here in my monogamous relationships that I can just walk away from if my partner starts triangulating me with their peers.

[–]spiderwithasushihead 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh my god this is so accurate. I’ve been a witness to relationships like this for years and they are 100% of the time dysfunctional as can be.

[–]lucidlotusFDS Newbie 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]abirdoftheskyFDS Newbie 52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh but don’t you know it’s just that they’re jealous over time not jealous over their partner! After all, love is infinite but time isn’t. So it’s the time. Just the time. Just the days of the week that’s the issue.

Also poly pickme: But I live with him and I wash his clothes and cook his dinner so um technically I’m more important to him than all the others. Not that that matters!

Yeah. Jesus. The part in the article linked here where the girlfriend tearfully asks Eric (the author’s husband) to “be her person” because she’s so lonely and has no one else…She’s latched on to the smallest kernel of affection from a married man (with another “girlfriend” besides her, even!) and wants to believe she is special to him. But it’s clear she isn’t.

[–]mandiefavorFDS Newbie 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because she can’t be alone during the pandemic… Yet plenty of single people made it through it so far somehow. Grow the fuck up. She wasn’t even completely alone, she has kids. But she apparently needed someone else’s husband’s dick. Gross.

Quite. I was a single mother juggling home schooling and running my company without my team (who are all mothers themselves and were therefore also homeschooling). It was so insanely hard but so what? It was a shitty time for most people. I was dating my boyfriend but couldn’t see him and we just coped. Polygamy is legal in my country so yes you are spot on. Atleast the men in my country have sense to build separate houses for the wives. Imagine sharing the same man and living in the same house 🤢. Honestly anything other than monogamy is a scam and women always get the short end of the stick.

[–]aluriaphinFDS Newbie 56 points57 points58 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Usually not, poly basically means you have multiple partners and there is open communication and honesty between everyone. A "throuple" would be if three people are all in a relationship with each other, but usually poly people have their own partners and don't intermix unless they are having threesomes (which is not as common as people might imagine.)

I don’t even know where to start with this, I feel both desperately sad, bewildered and disgusted reading this. I don’t want to blame women in general, but I just want to shake this person.

Collated thoughts:

  1. All I hear is ‘Eric’, like her whole world revolves around him and his body and his sexual appetite or whatever. Grim, get some actual healthy hobbies. The lingerie collection thing just made me retch - how is this different from some sort of tradwife, whose only joy in life is pleasing some guy. How is any of this progressive at all.

  2. Grim that this rando’s moved into her house - like not only does she have to share her husband with her, she’s probably cleaning up after her, sharing her bloody cutlery and comforts, all the things she’s bought to make him a lovely household (assuming this man is totally looked after in every way, which isn’t a long stretch of the imagination). This is basically an exercise in self effacement. The level of fawning is sickening.

  3. please tell me I misread and there aren’t children involved in this total farce.

A sane woman would divorce Eric's ass. Polyamory is a fancy way to say we're cheating on each other.

[–]blessedwiththreeFDS Newbie 44 points45 points46 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I feel so bad for her and I hope she comes to her senses! She is getting the shit end of the situation. The perks of a committed relationship include the fun, the sex, the emotional and physical intimacy and the stability. These perks go away when the relationship gets opened because they are going to the new partners, not the spouse.

This is a mistress that he gets to have an affair with and this lady is the wife whose purpose is to care for him and the home. What is the point of a relationship if he can't even fulfill your needs? Most men can't even sexually satisfy one woman and the rates of non-working dicks are skyrocketing these days! If your dick doesn't work and I do everything at home, take care of the kids, and bring in income then why would I want or need you 🤣?! Part of me thinks he and the other woman must enjoy mentally torturing the wife, because they don't care about having loud sex. It seems like even the fundamentalist polygamists try to keep boundaries, in order to pretend that the husband isn't switching beds and having sex every night.

I’ve recently discovered that my sister is in a poly relationship. Meaning her husband left her, working full time, with their 1 year old son, for 6 weeks to go to another country and spend time with his GF. I have no idea if my sister has another partner but I’d be astonished if she had the time.

Instead I spent 6 weeks helping her look after her son, seeing her exhausted because he wasn’t sleeping through the night because he missed his dad, seeing him scream whenever she left the room because he was so confused by his parents abandonment. I had to facilitate phone calls from BIL where he would call and say “oh we’ve been travelling and having so much fun” and my exhausted sister would reply “I’ve got a major project due at work and son has been up all night”.

I cannot believe this is the feminist idol of my youth- what has she become? A doormat for her piece of shut husband to walk all over. I’m so upset and angry for her that I can barely be in the same room as her shitty husband.

[–]woadskyFDS Newbie 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are some remote villages that practice polyandgy in Tibet and Nepal. There this kid of arrangement makes sense and is vital for the survivorship in the hostile environment. It is usually two brothers who marry one woman and take turn leaving to the remote pastures and farms while another is at home helping wife with domestic work and kids. And even there, although rarely, there's some jealousy, contempt and drama, usually around sex and wife's preference for one husband over the other.

I went out on a few (5x) dates with a guy who seemed like he had his life together. Red flag 1: he sends me a series of texts out of nowhere one night whining about how much he likes me but he has no read on how I feel. Felt like a drunk text, honestly. Red flag 2: When I offered to meet up w him to discuss in-person our feelings, he dropped the bomb that he believes that no one person can ever 100% fulfill the needs of his/her partner and since sex is the least important connection to him, that he would value connecting with his partner on an intellectual and emotional level more than on a sexual level. He would just find sexual fulfillment somewhere else. My gut reaction which I didn't even bother editing was, "Nope, that's not for me." and politely told him that I hope he'd get home safe when he tried to passive aggressively tell me he hoped I'd still follow back up with him but he'd understand if I wouldn't. He sent me a few texts afterward that I've ignored. At least I didn't waste too much time and emotional investment before he showed himself.

We're human beings. I hate polygamy for this reason. They will make you feel inferior and that you're not good enough. Friendships exists. Hobbies exists. You don't have to fuck everyone.

And you know what? You can't always get what you want. I honestly decided it was a scam after my loosely described friend got a divorce at 23 and moved in with a dude 15 years her senior who had a wife with a 12yo kid.

At first it was all kinky dory, we share each other, have fun. Then she admitted and laughed about the 12yo walking in on them having sex in the middle of the day. There was dozens of other huge red flags and it was all just plain gross. That kid is probably hopefully in therapy at this point.

A year in, the wife moves out with the kid and my "friend" gets married to the dude and gets pregnant with his kid. It was honestly the messiest shit show just from what she was describing.

My ex had a crapsack friend who had two kids and was also all about the polyamory except he was 28 having sex with a 17yo with a very difficult history of sexual abuse that made her very suicidal. Now 6 years later he "apparently" claims to regret taking advantage.

It's all gross, messy, demeaning. No one can convince me otherwise.

I will never cease to be bothered by the fact these poly relationships seem to lean more towards the man cheating on the wife. Imagine if she get so fed up, got a shred of dignity and left his ass. Better yet, have some fun beforehand and have another man give her the best sex ever. Let him get a taste of his own hubris.
