"Nice guy/girl" comes from the old line: "He's/she's a nice guy/girl, but..."

The way it is used in dating is to indicate that there's nothing particularly repulsive about you, but there's also nothing terribly attractive about you either.

And when someone says they "just want a nice guy/girl", what they're really saying is: "I wish one of the hot guys/girls I fawned over or dated would treat me better."

Because, let's be real, if you could have someone who is both hot and nice, why wouldn't you take it?

When people speak of "Nice guys" they are blending two definitions into one:

Fake nice, but secretly an asshole.
Real nice, but has lots of bad luck with other aspects in dating. Doesn't understand what he needs to improve about himself. Puts women on pedistool. Immediately treats any girl that gives him affection as a goddess. Doesn't really value the woman as an individual.

Both of those suck. 1 is just trying to manipulate, and 2. Is probably a good guy but he has no self respect or self esteem.

The one I think OP is asking for: is there a genuinely nice guy who also has high self esteem and is decently confident/charming?

In my opinion, it’s often the word “nice” itself that is the problem. While it can be a substitute for kind or caring, it isn’t always. It’s similar to good or decent in that its a very base level positive leaning description.

A good way to look at it: exchange the word nice for kind/caring/whatever positive term you want. It wouldn’t make sense for that woman to say “once we get a bit older and have had enough shit from the hot guys, compassionate guys are better for us” because those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. If you substitute good/decent for nice, it makes more sense. “…Have had enough shit from the hot guys, decent guys are better for us”. In that case, it makes it more clear what she’s actually saying: if you can’t lock down a hot guy when you’re young, settle for a decent guy.

You’re right about her separating the two groups, because her statement isn’t referring to hot and kind guys, she’s referring to primary options and fallback options.

The nice guy that’s referred to here sounds like maybe the guy that’s actually a good person with his shit together. This would be in contract to the video game playing stoner without a job, the “bad boy” or the asshole that doesn’t actually like her, that some women find appealing before they realize those guys are a terrible prospect for a long term partner or any kind of adult relationship.

By that quote, the "nice guy" has to be willing to accept that she doesn't actually find him attractive and is de facto settling for someone who isn't her type. It's not about if he's nice, it's about if he's supplicating and willing to provide validation regardless of her thoughts of him. If she never got sick of the hot guys, then she wouldn't be settling for non hot guys. The idea that the second category is nice is mostly about them not really having anything else attractive or going for them, and that the first category isn't judged on how they treat their partners at all.

“Nice guy” gets always confused with “spineless guy”. They are not the same thing but “nice guys” put a positive spin on rather unattractive qualities. Lack of assertiveness, lack of dominant features, lack of initiative, and on and on.

Women do want nice guys who are able to lead and exhibit masculine qualities. Women don’t want to be with other women generally so having feminine qualities isn’t to your advantage. You have to somehow find a way to work that out.

Women who separate hot and nice often mean the nice guy is boring or uninteresting; consider that "hot" can also largely factor in personality and how they behave around women, not just their physical appearance.

If you feel like you're getting the "nice guy" treatment the best thing you can do is just find ways to make yourself more interesting or compelling, but there's also no need to stop being nice or respectful towards the women you date.

Really you just don't want "nice" to be your defining trait.

6.3', physically wise I look like Huge Jackman, but younger. Not bragging. Very masculine facial features, full black hair (Note: my most rarest and unique physical trait, very proud of my hair since it's what stylist call "blue-black", darkest shade of black in humans that produce blue reflections depending on light... Never had a problem with women but I too have noticed that they tend to flake or get turned off when they meet the real... Well, me.

Lots of women have previously stated that from afar I look quite rough, manly, "dark", "misterious", even kinda evil-ish... Until the moment when they meet me and realize I'm just a very relaxed, chill, fun, kind and good hearted big dude, and then they are like "oh, you are so cute... But too nice for me". Or may be they don't say nothing but their whole demeanor and behaviour towards me changes, at some point, out of the blue.

It's weird but the first time I go out with a woman they are all over the place, acting flirty and sexy, making sexual innuendos... This weird thing they do with their hair, it's like a fucking helicopter during our first interactions.

But as soon as I show some affection or I drop a few compliments, or may be I just say "hey I really enjoy spending time with you", or may be I have a kind gesture with them like buying her some small thing...

They just freeze. Like -0 cold. They start acting like they are bored, unnintrested, they don't show affection anymore. Then they stop texting me, they let me on seen, they start answering 9-10 hours later, then they make it hard to meet with them again...

Boom. It's over. Every single time, it's like a script or something.

And as soon as I cut contact and move on they come back again asking why I ghosted them or something like that.

Don't tell me it's the kind of women I date because I've dated all types of women, of all ages, professions, colours and cultural/religious backgrounds. Lots of them. It's not a mere personal observation or a feeling, it's my life experiences, years of dating women. It's women.

The only exception may be my longest relationship partner ever, who also happens to be my ex-fiancee, and we got it that far because she was and still is a very unique and amazing woman I adore with all my heart, she will be forever my greatest love life and this is because she accepted me as I truly am, a sucker and incurable romantic with a great sense of humour, a thing for classic cars and bikes and a hot body (now I'm bragging).

The rest of the women... All the same.

Honestly, IDGAF, their lost, but not gonna lie it hurts sometimes on behalf of women because why would they want to date a mean dude, right?

It's not like I'm too soft or too "femenine" or whatever. I actually have very masculine hobbies, I love going out, traveling on my bike, I love engines and classic cars, heavy metal-rock music... The thing is... most people are nice. I'm not kidding when I say I can count on one hand the number of people I can recall right now that are not nice to me. I feel like there should be more, but they're not memorable enough to recall right now. Maybe deep down some people are not really good people and is pretending, but their interactions with me on the surface level are all nice. I will need to get to know them (and for boyfriends, actually date them for a while) to find out if they're secretly not nice.

So someone being nice in the friend/dating world is like someone being literate in the job market. It's very important, but kinda expected.

I think the key thing to remember when thinking about "nice" vs "hot" etc, is that actions, behaviors, and mannerisms are all signalling mechanisms which can alter your perception of a person's sexual attractiveness.
There are certain physical attributes that lay the baseline for physical hotness. Things like height, muscularity, hair, and facial symmetry.
However, the PERCEPTION of someones physical attractiveness can be altered by "value" signals that we learned based upon the observed behaviors of hot and/or ugly people.

One of these things is effort/niceness. If someone is way physically hotter than you, than the expected behavior is that due to their higher value, they shouldn't be chasing you, going out of their way to try to win the favor of someone less attractive, they don't have to be nice, and can even be mean and still expect sex due to their high hotness value.

BUT when these behaviors change, sometimes it can send signals that conflict with the initial perception based on appearance. A hot guy who is a total doormat and constantly apologizes, acts with zero confidence, and tries to do things to win favor, sets off alarms in a girls brain. She'll think "whats wrong with this guy that he feels the need to do all that and is so insecure? my initial judgment based on appearance must be wrong. these thoughts need reconciled" (this is all subconscious).

Sometimes it works the other way too, where if a questionably borderline average but maybe goodlooking guy starts acting very confident, shows no hint of neediness, and never chases, women may think they misjudged the situation and this is actually a hottie.

However behavior isn't the only cue, so if other women are like "no, that dude is a troll, he's just arrogant because of a napoleon complex etc" that can resolve the incongruence for them too.

Yea we exist, were just out here doing our own thing, leveling up. Finding a nice guy is pretty hard, because we had every game in the book played on us, and now were just not interested in a relationship anymore, hell, most of us dont even have a desire to get married anymore. The term a lot of us get hit with is MGTOW, Men Going Their Own Way, (im not going to try and say every guy out here is a good man, incels exist). I don't know. I think it depends who you're talking to. I know guys online - when they say "nice guy" they actually just mean a slightly below average guy lol (below average in everything -- conversation, looks, status, etc)

But for myself and other women I know, when we say nice guy, we mean an ACTUAL nice guy. A guy that is nice. People like him. He's not some kind of archetype or anything, just a guy that the average person would find pleasant and is genuinely courteous.

I’m 6’2, physically fit, relatively attractive, stay fresh, hold 2 degrees and am climbing the corporate ladder all while owning/operating my own side business. I’ve always been referred to as a nice/good guy by women. Now I’ve never had much difficulty getting women. The issue is keeping them. They usually end up cheating and leaving after years of commitment. Even in the end they say I’m too good a guy for them.

Despite how much people try and shame “nice guys” now days….I think nice guy just means you love, respect and would do anything for your woman without complaint. Dependable and trustworthy. In a sense I guess you can pedestalize them based on your beliefs/up bringing in regards to the way you were taught to interact with women too. What I can say I’ve learned over the last 18 years of dating is that most women don’t like that. I mean it’s enduring at first but becomes boring by the end. And one thing you don’t want to be is boring. Women hate that. There needs to be some level of toxicity. I’m not saying full on physical or emotional abuse. But some type of mental gymnastics. A mental tug of war. You need to be an asshole, but just enough to still be loved and be caring/romantic, but just enough not to be labeled a pushover/simp. You ever notice these are the guys they talk on and on about for years….even after they breakup? They crave it. Until they hit this thing called the wall……then their looks start to fade and their biological clock starts ticking. Then that’s when Mr. nice guy becomes “desirable”.

When I was younger I wasn’t good at telling who was actually nice. I let people jerk me around because they were over the top sweet and charming initially, so I brushed off actions that were at odds with their words. I really tried to have limitless kindness and patience, so I believed every excuse.

I’m sure some people saw that as me loving jerks but no. I loved the idea of being so nice myself that I didn’t give up on someone for treating me badly, because I just knew deep down they were good people.

Asshole/badboy = someone who is confident enough to break rules that don't make sense to him and therefore liberates women from the need to be good girls, which is immensely more exciting to them and sexually attractive

Yes, they do. They don't state they are nice guys, others often say they are. Used to work with one in my old job, he offered to take me to work when I had no transport. Would tell me about his marathons he was training for on the way to work. Genuine nice fellow, I understood why half the office fancied him.

Nice=boring, average

If you're being described as just "nice" it means you have nothing else to bring to the table other than being a reasonably decent person and law-abiding citizen. There's nothing special about that. Nothing that stands out.

Hot/exciting guys create genuine desire and attraction in a woman. They create an emotional response and connection. Whether it be through their superior looks, social status, resources, charisma/sense of humor, etc. they find a way to stand out from the crowd that gets a woman's positive attention. Nice guys are the opposite; they're not necessarily mean or kind. Rather, they're just there.
