As a white male with a crippling physical disability rendering me unable to walk, incapable of performing simple tasks for myself such as using an oven etc, I go into a blinding rage every time I see anyone say "check your privilege" under any circumstance. Everyone is different, everyone has things that hold them back as human beings and to make the assumption that because you are fair skinned and have a cock that you can coast through life because you have it easy is ridiculous at best. Everyone has both advantages and disadvantages. Just because you have certain advantages doesn't render all of your opinions and feelings moot.

If you want to experience white privilege just walking down the streets of NYC smelling of marijuana if front of a cop. People act like it's us versus them. But male and female are two sides of the same coin. Wanting more is human, but the lack of acknowledgement of the other side is becoming pathetic from some of these women.

No one will say women don't face challenges, but there are some situations where men face an unfair system where the odds are completely stacked against them.

It's all fun and games until somebody with that advantage uses it against your son, your father, your brother.

Privilege is an interesting thing. I think a lot of the theory behind it is still stuck in the 2nd wave rhetoric, when it really needs to be made more intersectional.

For instance, in your case, you aren't experiencing privilege for being male, according that single named scholarship. I would have to look closer at all of the possible scholarships to determine if this difference is a common occurrence. It could be one of a few scholarships that differentiate by gender, and many gender-specific scholarships specifically for girls are ones that support girls going into fields they traditionally do not follow into, which serves a specialized purpose and can't really be used as a proper general example. For instance, as a trans woman, I was disqualified from scholarships set aside for women. Which is bullshit, but it was only two of fifty or so I had available to me. There was still a "male" specific scholarship I could access, but i'm sure the interview required for it would disqualify me outright.

And also, you bring up "white male privilege". your being white has likely given you privilege in this scenario, just not enough to bypass this specific instance.

I would say that privilege in schooling admission and scholarship support would place heavier weight on socioeconomic status than anything, and very likely race and ethnicity would become a secondary marker for how it would be weighted, due to less funding going to more urban schools where racial minorities are more common.

However, there is still such a thing as male privilege, and white privilege. It just isn't prominent in every situation.

I love my white privilege. My "privilege" being that my people were slaves/2nd class citizens in their own rightful territory for 400 years. They were also victims of genocide, for which no reparation, or even mention has been paid by the aggressors. My people had to fight for their independence 200 years ago. My grandparents came to this country with nothing, because they were suffering in their "privileged, white" country. They came and worked 80 hour weeks to make their kids lives half-way decent, so that they could work very hard themselves, just so that my life would be good.

Oh right, all white people and all men have the same exact history of aggression and bigotry and this justifies racist, sexist policies that exist today.

The concept of male privilege is that women face oppression that we don't. (And yes, we face oppression too. The point is they face more, which I think most of us would agree with). Where it goes wrong is when people not that well acquainted with the concept use it as an argument to suggest that when we, outside of a conversation with them, mention our problems, to suggest we have no problems because when you keep score theirs is higher.

It's honestly just a really poor choice of words for "I'm repressed and you aren't" because it's not really one that was designed for interaction with non-feminists. Unfortunately many feel that recent-era feminism has done a poor job of being intellectually available to outsiders.

As for the single-20 something comparison, remember that that's a comparison of the wealthiest women to the poorest men. Married men make more money than single men in general, and single women without kids make more than any other type of woman, but married men make quite a bit more than they do.

I once had a days long discussion on that very topic with a fellow MRA who doesn't believe in male privilege but does believe in white privilege. We got down to tiny little details and everything... and he was never able to factually, logically explain to me why anything related to the "affirmative action" concept (on which double standards like the one you cite are based) is not just more discrimination, why it's merited now, or any other reason why it should rightfully continue. There was a lot of discussion on achievement or lack thereof as evidence of discrimination, but he was never able to demonstrate to me the way in which he thought discrimination resulted in that lack of achievement, or why using money as a means of "making up for" the alleged discrimination did not alter the pattern of achievement. If your friend answers you, that's probably the best you're going to get from her, too... unless she decides to be honest, and say, "I can't."

If I had been of Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander Decent I would have received an additional $50/ft which adds up over the course of my 4 year degree to about $5000, a rather substantial amount.

However as I am of european decent I do not get this free additional stipend.

Look- I get your anger and what not, but minority based scholarships (as noted in your edit) are not really your enemy. Male-White privilege is dominant all over your life. What's the ratio of women verse men enrolled at the school? What is the minority percentage of enrollment?

Before you through your "im a white male" temper tantrum "where's my rights" just critically think about your situation first. I'm a major advocate for mens rights-especially in parenting issues, however, admissions to colleges are not black and white and consists of tons of variables. I work in higher ed and it's complex.

Do I think it is always fair? No.
