Ever wonder why r/amiugly and pretty much every other rating sub is filled with women? It’s because your upvotes get biased by your attractiveness. More men find those average women attractive so they upvote them, but women do not find the average men attractive and just think “eww” and do not upvote.

i don't frequent the sub, but from what I've seen the women who say they haven't had any luck romantically are usually average or slightly below, in which case i believe them. I'd also add that "zero luck romantically" doesn't necessarily mean "no man has ever been interested in me".

If they're hot and claim they have never been asked out and that they had zero luck romantically it basically comes down to one of three things: a)they lie and just post on that sub to get validation and compliments, b)they are extremely introverted, extremely shy and have never left their house, or c)they have been asked out but not by the guys they want.

it depends. if it’s someone posting on that sub and i see their profile and it has a bunch of pics of them im gonna assume it’s for attention. but there is women out there who genuinely don’t think they’re attractive and really need reassurance from people online because they’re that insecure. it is possible that they don’t have luck with finding a romantic partner due to not putting themselves out there or not having good social skills. it really can be anything

i can definitely relate I’ll be 23 in a week and when i didn’t have my first real kiss till i was 17 which is a shock to people. I only had one relationship and it was toxic as hell. I didn’t really associate with men in high school, i didn’t feel like i would attract them and was insecure about everything lol. I didn’t put myself out there and i didn’t believe people when they told me i was pretty. im not being cocky i promise but i get complimented a lot for my looks and if i told them i was single or insecure they wouldn’t believe me. it sucks everyone has issues is my point lol

I believe them. Although I agree they are all beautiful, they most likely feel insecure, and struggle to accept a part of themselves. In society, men n women alike are held to this standard of what ideal beauty looks like, and whemevet they feel they don't match it, that's when maybe they feel they are 'ugly'

I believe them if they’re average or below, because it matches my experience. I had extremely little male interest that I was able to detect, in spite of being not fat and plain looking. A large reason for that is that I was not flirty and almost never when to parties and didn’t get drunk and was unwilling to put myself out there for casual sex. Most men actually aren’t social doofuses and can read accurately when a woman isn’t interested in fucking them instantly, and so they’ll avoid them for that. And I was evidently not hot enough to be worth the effort for a long term relationship.

Like yes, sure, I know I could have gone to a truck stop when I was 18, taken off my shirt and announced I wanted some dick, and some 45 year old fat guy would fuck me… but I genuinely didn’t want that.

The notion you guys have that every woman is constantly swamped with attention is based in the women you notice the most… and the same women who are invisible to you are also invisible to most or all other men’s too.

You’re also overlooking that in dating, there’s a whole lot of luck. You can do everything you’re taught, and have it not work at all.

Not every woman is surrounded by simp types. A lot of young people had the pandemic really interrupt their normal socialisation as well. Living a Hermit life is not conducive to having a social, and therefore romantic, life.

Looks are one part of dating, but it's really not the only thing.

If you sort by “new” and not by “hot” (hot shows the most highly upvoted posts), you will get more “unattractive” women.

I used to be thin and beautiful and I got ZERO male attention. No, I didn’t do online dating so I am sure that some angry man will chime in about how I was too picky because I didn’t want to have sex with random dudes on the internet. But I got ZERO dates IRL. I went to college and no guys would talk to me in class. In fact, I would try to talk to guys on my own and always got the sense that they weren’t interested at all. I would also try extremely hard to meet dudes at church and got nothing. Like I had moms and grandmas try to set me up with their grandsons/sons and the sons/ grandsons were never interested. I also would talk to guys at church and it would never go anywhere and I would later see the dudes marry someone else.

So yes, I believe them. Also, when I look at that subreddit, I see a number of reasonably attractive men and women as well as some dudes who look like Chads. I don’t feel some seething rage towards them. It also looks like most people posting there are under 30, with most being under 25. You have to be in an insecure/ depressed state of mind to post yourself on a subreddit where people tell you if you’re ugly or not. Also, someone super “ugly” will generally not post themselves on there because they already know they are ugly and don’t want to be hurt.

I could buy it. The thing about the internet is it exposes you to like a hundred or a thousand times as many men and men are generally varied in the kind of woman they like so a wide variety of women posting online can find some dude into them physically, even if they don't meet their cultures local beauty standard or don't work to fit into whatever aesthetic is popular wherever they are. Its also more common to see dudes who don't care about makeup or grooming so photos of an average looking girl without much work putting will still get its fans even if she'd be unremarkable walking down the street.

Since I've been more active on social media this has become a reasonably common phenomenon I've noticed where some girl who you probably wouldn't look at twice can blow up if she finds a niche that works for her, or even someone who works as a professional model once they figure it out and move somewhere where men like whatever they have going on.

EVEN THEN though a lot of it is still pretty blatant fishing for compliments. Especially if you sort by the shit with most engagement. People on subs like that will fall over themselves to talk up an obviously hot girl looking for an ego boost.

So as someone that has been told I am attractive, it is hard to believe. I grew up very uncomfortable and weird looking. I had a super gorgeous mom and looked like my dad. A total Meg situation. As someone that is now considered the “sexy” one of the family, I actually don’t believe it. I have dated gorgeous men and it took years and therapy to come to terms that I am not ugly, or fat. I was also bullied for my physical appearance. Sometimes I message the girls and tell them how beautiful they are, because they are and it’s hard to reconcile. I had already healed more or less of that turmoil at their age but I didn’t grow up with all these filters. It’s harder now to accept what you look like because what beautiful is has had the goal post move. No one really knows what people look like anymore and goes to show the effects on a whole generation.

To be honest some women just never have been asked out or have anyone like them, however "unlikely" that must seem.

Society just kind of expects women to be pretty. Even in this subreddit, most behaviours and situations people complain about are only apllicable for highly attractive women.

Average women arent really receiving tons of attention from the opposite sex, much less ugly women. While the first are normally just ignored by most men, the latter are frequently bullied and humiliated because of their looks.

I know I've never been asked out or had a boyfriend, or really ever had any guy hitting on me at all. I'm not fat, I don't think I have a terrible personality, and still, no one ever seemed to take any interest on me.

I believe that some of them do have self-image issues, are insecure, or have issues with committing to the idea of being with someone.

But then I also believe there's probably a large amount of "aw, I feel so ugly, it's ok, you can tell me it's true" bait for umpteen million comments saying "no babe, you're stunning!"

I had a scan down a bunch of the ~~recent~~ (actually I was looking at Hot, not New) posts, they look fine to better-than-fine to me.

Vast majority perfectly good looking enough for me to be interested, even the overweight ones don't look half bad. Sure, they'd look better if they weren't overweight, but it's not like they're overinflated pool toys, they're still facially attractive and not absolutely massive, they still generally have shape.

Insecurity is a big thing that can also impact how others view you. When you feel negative about yourself you start to neglect basic things like self care including exercise and hobbies + things you enjoy which give you the opportunity to meet others. I’m in this position after growing up ridiculed for my appearance and I’m well aware it’s probably self imposed but that doesn’t make it any easier to work through

Too many times in that subreddit are women in their 20s asking if they're ugly, saying that they had zero luck romantically, never been asked out and they always had to be the initiator when it comes to asking people out.

Always need to keep in mind that they speak about men they find attractive (which, might I say is rather normal and to be expected). Additionally remembering the infamous OKCupid data showing that women find 20% of men attractive pretty much explains the whole situation.

I got zero attention, never approached, and never asked out until I hit about 23, then it got progressively better.

I’m not overweight, been always fit, but my face is average/below average. I dress nicely, have a good personal style, and am fairly social and chatty.

It took my a long time to be comfortable in my own skin though, mostly since I’ve always been reminded I’m not pretty enough. Once I got some comfort, my dating life improved.

99% of the posts on that sub are baits for attention. Most of the women on there probably have DMs flooded from men on that sub as well as any dating apo they are on. It's pretty easy to see a lot of people that post in there aren't remotely ugly. Some pretty attractive. It's attention bait. I know girls that are conventionally unattractive and they get flooded, so there's no way average and above average girls on there or having zero responses or interactions with men

People need to realize that most of the numbers we discuss here are averages representing large populations. There are attractive-ish or average women out there with little experience or no "romantic luck". They are rare, but they exist.

Especially consider that we are talking about very young people. If they were a late bloomer they could have only been in the dating world for two or three years.

Yes I do. Just like with the men on this sub, they’re probably lacking in the social life/skills department. When I was shy I received very little attention, and I wasn’t ugly or fat and was in my supposed “prime.” These days I’m “post-wall” and still not fat but not nearly as thin, and get more attention and would have a lot more dating opportunities if single. Looks matter a ton for women, but nothing matters if you’re not putting yourself out there.

Please also keep in mind that on all rating subs, the more attractive women are always at the top because men upvote them. Attractive guys come next, then you start to see less attractive people lower down. So the top posts on r/amiugly will always be women who aren’t ugly.

I'm sorry but I can't believe these people have never had anyone interested in them.

I remember in my first college there was a girl who kept saying how ugly she was and how no man was interested in her. This person's Facebook page was full of "I'm so ugly!" memes, things that ranged from self-mockery to self-pity.

The funny part is she was quite attractive and had already rejected several of my classmates, but since the guys were average then they didn't count.

I guess a lot of women in that sub do the same thing and just as many do it because they know they will get a lot of compliments and maybe even simping.

I was a very pretty young woman. With the hindsight of cronedom, I can see that if I had understood how to leverage my looks and carried myself with confidence, I could have had an absurd amount of romantic success.

I did not do these things, because I was shy, socially anxious, had no particular understanding of my beauty, and didn’t know how to interpret signals of interest. As far as I could tell I fell short of the ideal. I lacked the skills to attract and secure the attention I very much wanted.

It’s not exactly the same world today but I see no reason not to think that modern young woman are also, often, unsure and insecure about their attractiveness.
