If you are passionate about it, it is very powerful. An example I would use is Neil deGrasse Tyson: I personally have never thought astrophysics to be something that I would be personally interested in, but after hearing Mr. Tyson talk about it with such passion, I found that I was beginning to be drawn towards it as well. So yes, intelligence is attractive, but you can't be showing off your intelligence for the sake of impressing a woman, but rather be genuinely passionate about the topics you want to discuss.

Yes... girls want guys with brains, but your idea of "intelligent" conversations probably aren't what they want to engage in. Women prefer men with social intelligence and passion far more. Having intellectual curiosity, strong, well-thought-out opinions and calm confidence in them with the ability to wittily defend them when directly challenged is what you want to aim for. And you won't often have to demonstrate that. Quality women recognize it pretty quickly.

When you talk to someone, not just the girl, about their views or opinions make sure you're HONESTLY doing it to understand that person and not to prove them wrong, "get them to understand" or best them in an battle of wits... or at least make damn sure the person you're talking to wants that right now and enjoys that. Guys may be into those sorts of competitions, but women aren't.

With all that in mind, keeping up with the latest research is great, but find the emotional and/or social hook in it. With science that emotional hook is very often awe; e.g. "Did you hear that they think they found a planet where it rains diamonds? How awesome is that?"

I've got a degree in mathematics but I don't talk to women about the actual mathematics. Instead I talk about how awed I am that structure arises from virtually nothing or that symmetry and information can be measured. These are the sorts of ideas that bring passion to my study of mathematics. Intellectual awe is definitely sexy... Mental skill is definitely sexy... Technicalities and details aren't.

I find that if you are passionate about a topic, and can wax and wane poetically about it, they generally eat it up. The atoms in our body being made of the remnants of an exploding star, the fact that we're seeing stars as they were X years ago, all of that shit is incredibly interesting and deviates greatly from normal boring conversations, and gets them thinking about the reality of the human situation and what it means to be alive.

Of course girls love intelligent men! What girls don't like are guys who have to be right, hairsplitting, and exacting all the time (aka assholes). Redditors tend to be educated so I can see where guys here think "I'm intelligent and ladies are not into me so it must be my intelligence that puts them off" (which is actually kinda shitty but a whole 'nother can of worms for another time). Here's how I know. I am a lady designer for a major software corporation. Everyday I interact with a sea of intelligent men who complain about the same thing all the time. They are great to work with, but on a personal level it is hard to spend a lot of time with them because they hairsplit like crazy. Its just how nerds rank each other: who can be more correct than who, and they bring those habits into all of their relationships. Comparing my coworkers with Sheldon from BBT is not an exaggeration. I met my boyfriend at work who is very much a cs nerd (no glasses either!) but what attracted me to him is he's very relaxed and happy. He is confident, and treats me like a lady. They are very important qualities to have, not just to attract mates, but to enjoy your life.

In summary: girls like smart men, but attitude is everything!

My personal experience is that scientifical subjects can only create attraction when they´re related to something contextual, and when explained simply.

Let´s say that you´re looking at the stars with your girl and you see a shooting star or some crazy shit like aurora borealis. I feel that, as you´re able to explain why this happens simply, passionate and in a fun way it can definitely raise your value.

But don't go ranting about the curvature of the universe and relativity and shit you know she won't understand, because you won't impress her that way.

The way to attract a girl when talking about geeky stuff, is to be feeling a powerful emotion while doing it. The pitfall here is trying to talk in a logical manner with her. If she's a geek, she'll talk with you about it for a bit, but even she won't get turned on and if you're out she's going to ditch you to find someone who's going to arouse and bone her.

For a girl to want to have sex with you, you have to make her feel strong emotions. Thus you could talk to the dumbest girl about relativity but if you're doing it in such a way that it's amusing yourself, she'll enjoy it to an extent. I'm a pop culture geek and I could talk that shit for hours. The question isn't what you should talk about, but when. If you're geek about something, you can mention about it, but don't go into too much of detail if the girl you're chatting up isn't really into that, she will get bored. This is the mistake most of us do.

If the girl happens to like the same stuff as you, dive in and have a genuine geek conversation and DHV yourself in that field. Every geek loves to meet another one, even girls.

Template: Girl: "So what do you do on your free time?" Me: "I tend to lots of TV shows, right now I'm into Community and few others.

Option 1:

Someone who can talk about things they find interesting, with passion and expertise and involve her in the conversation. It isn't so much about what you're talking as much as it is about how you're saying it. I can talk about farts and be saying nothing, but if I say it with conviction, she's interested. Intelligence is my weakness as far as guys go. I honestly don't even care if you have acne coming out of your ears or weigh 300 pounds, any guy that can hold a conversation without having to bring up sex or how drunk he got this weekend can just have my heart on a silver platter. The problem with intelligent guys though, in my experience, is that they are always so arrogant and make me feel like I'm retarded. there are different forms of intelligence and not all of it reveal themselves in that scholarly or academic matter. being able to dress well, string sentences together, or even physically make something reveals an intelligence that most of us ignore as being smart. an aesthetic sensibility is absolutely a means to provide "proof" of your intelligence and this covers everything from your ability to dress yourself, decorate your house, putting together a meal or whatever daily thing you might not consider. Another thing is passion or deep interest in something. it does a lot to show a careful consideration of social relevancy, fashion sense (in terms of keeping up to date), and meticulously guided thoughts to... video games and how they might function for you outside of playing them. there are intelligent and unexplored thesis topics everywhere.

my issue here isn't the intellectual capacity of the conversation but the ethical, religious, or political standpoints that we individually carry. there is a chance where the interaction blow up in a debate. on first dates or any other first encounters, girls and guys are shy, and even though they may be able to carry the discussion, the potentially aggressive and heated conversation you're trying to push might turn them off... we can disagree with our girl/boy but it's totally a time, place and familiarity thing.

You have to know how to engage a woman with intelligent conversation.

In a club, where you have 1,000,000 distractions and can't really hear conversation, you have to maintain conversation on a quick beat, with more emotional, to-the-point, primal conversations. You have to be quick with intelligence, or focus solely on quips and wit until you can be in a quieter atmosphere.

On the other end of the spectrum is the girl you meet at the book store, or in an otherwise quiet area. They appreciate passion and intelligence, and will connect very easily with someone who can express this.

Finally, the way you convey your intelligence is key. If you're overly arrogant, condescending, or you speak intelligence without ANY confidence, then yes, intelligence will almost universally be a turnoff. HOWEVER, if you can convey that you're an interesting person - build intrigue - intelligence is generally seen as sexy.

tl;dr - know your environment, and express your intelligence accordingly with confidence, not cockiness.

Woman here; I am not the majority of people I know. I have never been with anybody because of their appearance. I don't find appearance appealing. I find people attractive because of personality and intelligence.

As I mentioned, I am not the majority. All women I have ever been friends with have all only seemed focused on appearance until they have experienced affection for somebody. But yet, they still choose mates initially from appearance. How do you respond when a girl asks: "Are you are intelligent?" In the past I used to either say, "Yeah" or "I work hard", but I feel as if the responses are arrogant, and beta, respectively
