2 years ago, I married my wife. We had dated for 3 years and she is exactly everyone I’ve dreamed of for a wife.

I currently earn 90k/y and she earns 90k/y herself. I always wanted an equal partner and the trust in marriage is there in that we’d never cheat and if we divorced for incompatibility, aside from lawyer expenses, we’d keep whatever we earned ourselves.

We also keep completely separate finances.

We don’t have and won’t have kids.

The complication and my feeling of entrapment begins 1-2 years ago, a little after our wedding.

My father had gifted me 500,000 as a present for my career, accomplishments, and marriage, but only under my name.

1 month after that, he tragically passed away and in his will, left me with about 2 million.

So now, not including my IRA/401k (~150k), my net worth has gone up 2.5 million and with the stock market, past the 3 million point.

My wife was with me for the “journey”. I’ve been healing.

But as our marriage has developed, my marriage has become quite difficult and my wife bringing up the topic of divorce frequently.

Yes, our salaries are the same. I’m actually securing a 200k/y job next year.

But I’m afraid that if this divorce does happen, I’d be losing half of what my father gave/passed to me and it going to her?

I already put her name on my home that she never contributed to her as a sign of commitment in our marriage (750k value).

My father worked incredibly hard for his wealth, having to also sacrifice so much time away from my childhood to do that. I know what his money means and it’d drive me crazy knowing that now, someone my dad has talked to met maybe 10 times may be taking half of my dad’s life work.

If we never mingled our finances and we file our taxes separately…and we earn the same (aside from What we have from investments), am I safe or am I screwed?

I’m thinking of even declining my job offer to maintain our equal power dynamic.
