Of all parents responding who were expecting children, 56.4% indicated they would consider pursuing elective circumcision if they had a son; 24.3% said they would not. In instances in which the father of the expected baby was circumcised, 81.9% of respondents were in favour of pursuing elective circumcision. When the father of the expected child was not circumcised, 14.9% were in favour of pursuing elective circumcision.

Its actually strongly influenced if the father of the child is circumcised. So its not the mother deciding this alone.

I personally am for complete bodily autonomy. I dont think anyone's body should be altered without their consent especially babies and children. My mom got my ears pierced when I was 3 month old. I pierced myself two more earlobe holes when I was like 16 or 17. When I was younger I never really thought about the pierced ears and I was glad I got them. I am wearing ear rings all my life. But it wasn't my choice. Nowadays I'm mortified how normalised this is and I think it shouldn't be like this.

I also never was with a circumcised guy (Europe isnt that big on it) so Idk what it is like but I had never issues with "aesthetics" as it is often cited as a reason for it to be done. I think its a gruesome practice that needs to be abolished.

My hope is that with the new study that just came out that describes the frenular delta as the actual male G-Spot, which is basically the clit, this practice will die out even more. Because during circumcision they are basically cutting away male clits.

Where are you getting your stats for your statement “it’s 99% women making decision to circumcise”? Genuinely.

Maybe it is just where you live but it is illegal in Australia, and only under the table doctors will do it in specific circumstances, usually cultural, such as islam or Hebrew parents. And most of the time I have witnessed in my career as a nurse it is actually the dad wanting the circumcision.

Circumcision should not be done on babies. If a man turns 18 and decides he wants to pay to have it done on himself, that's his choice. But men need to be able to have a choice.

Yes it is. Interestingly it is a human right that girls have that men don’t. A proving point that in the west women have more rights than men, so feminists, who again has more legal rights? Men do not have bodily autonomy, women do. It is illegal to alter the genitals of a girl under 18 without consent. A boy has no such right. They also claim it’s without pain and is consequentless. Garbage. Any surgery on any part of the body has feeling. The foreskin has extra nerve endings. Research babies dieing from blood loss after circumcision, it happens all the time, or deformed penises later in life, as the foreskin grows with and around the penis, removing it stunts it. With fgm there is extremes that are horrific. While there are some middle eastern countries that circumcise the hood only, which is the equivalent of the foreskin. In this case not sure why one should be condoned but the other not. Religious or not. There’s no medical excuse that can’t be fixed with a prescription cream. Either way all should be banned, babies cannot consent, cannot word how much it hurts and understand what you are doing to them. It’s really sad actually. Let them do what they want when they can consent

I can agree with the sentiment of needing to take circumcision more seriously....but FGM is degrees worse than it.

FGM can never be done right. Even in the safest and healthiest circumstances, any girl or woman who has gone through will still experience complications that will affect her daily life.

FGM is also done when the girl is old enough to remember, while she’s being held down and with no pain medication.

It is done specifically to remove the ability for pleasure in a marriage that she will later be forced into.

Every woman I’ve spoken to that’s had FGM done to her remembers something horrifying about it. They remember being afraid. They remember someone forcing them still.

And some of them remember the pain.

FGM IS worse.

Both are issues

There are a lot of different forms of female circumcision, it's not monolithic.

When it involves removing the entire clitoris it is absolutely worse than male circumcision, since the homologous equivalent in men is the penis glans. That would be like cutting off the entire tip of your dick.

But there are some forms of female circumcision that are less invasive than male circumcision, like one controversial case in the US involved a minority religious community that made a small cut on the clitoral hood. Yet these are still broadly not tolerated in western societies.

No disagreement with the core of the post here. I was circumcised (grew up in a Muslim country) and didn’t have a say. Of course I don’t know what the sensation of full function is like, but that’s beyond the point.

I mostly want to question a few things in the body of your post thought.

“99% of women making the decision to circumcise” is flat out untrue. Now what is true is that the majority prefer circumcision sexually, but even that’s 54% vs 46%, and I wonder how much of it hypocrisy vs systemic influence. As for decisions by parents - often, the decision to circumcise is done via lineage/faith/culture, so I wonder how much of it is influenced by gender vs culture as there doesn’t seem to be any proof towards 99%

"FGM" is any non medical injury inflicted on the female genitalia and never involves the removal of the clitoris, which if ever was a tradition would be a form of execution!

The term "FGM" itself is discriminatory and highly misleading, as obviously not all injuries are mutilations.

A baby just died last week from one.

What case are you referring to?

This tradition of inflicting injuries on a child's genitals to brand them as community property is absolutely oppressive and belongs in the same category as slavery quite irrespective of the gender, creed or culture of the victim.

The biggest problem with anti circumcision folks is that the vast majority seem pathologically incapable of making their argument without comparing it to FGM. It's not comparable to FGM.

"Wait though, if you look at this specific subtype of FGM performed in this specific region!"

The fact that you have to drill down and specify exactly which subtype of FGM is more comparable to circumcision shows exactly why it's not comparable.

Why is it not sufficient to say, "Circumcision is an outdated practice that violates bodily autonomy and the benefits do not outweigh the risks?"

I ask this question all the time and can never get an answer where the person does not insist on comparing it to FGM.

Do you understand how gross it is dismissing female genital mutilation as insignificant? It’s not just pleasure a woman is robbed of. Maybe look into it champ. When the hole you birth children through, and you will be forced to have many, is mutilated and sewn shut to keep you “pure” for your future pedo husband so it can be knifed open on your wedding night at 13 for his pleasure. How is this even comparable to a tiny piece of skin snipped off that over 99% of men don’t care about or miss. Blaming women in a patriarchal society for patriarchal traditions is gross. Western society still isn’t all the way there on male circumcision because men want their kids peepee to look like theirs. America is backward and rightwing so it’s not surprising it’s lagging behind but mums led the way here in ending circumcision closing on 3 decades ago. It is like comparing apples and oranges. Male and female anatomy are different. Which is why male circumcision is more beneficial than FGM. Also male circumcision was also advocated with puritanical intentions to thwart guys from pleasuring themselves. But it proved to be ineffective and pointless. If any it just proved that the circumcised penis keeps its function and provides pleasure.

Male circumcision isn't seen as oppresive, because the vast majority of men are fine with being circumcised as an infant. Some are even thankful for it, more so than the ones who dislike it. And the ones who dislike being circumcised, probably do so, because they just want to have a foreskin simply because they cannot have one. Humans generally have the tendency to want things they cannot have. But they are basing this desire on an ideal in their head. They simply don't know how it is to have a foreskin.

I was circumcised as an adult guy much later in life, unlike OP I can compare before and after. I truly appreciate to be circumcised now.

But I don't think you will get anyone who already holds this set of opinions to agree, because the reason most people don't care about circumcision is that it is normalized for them, not because they have a deeply held belief about why it should be done. FGM was never normalized in the US and Europe, which made banning it easier due to racism.

Intactivist mothers, who are mostly feminist progressive women, have probably done the most of any group to bring the numbers down in the last twenty years, so blaming the high rates overall on mothers seems misplaced.

What do you mean it’s ‘99% women making the decision’? I’ve no idea how it works as I’d never do it, but presumably it requires parental consent so a father also has to agree.

This doesn’t need to be a gender issue. My understanding is that it is closely associated with particular cultural and religious norms, and many women are very strongly against the practice.

I'm staunchly against routine male circumcision. I go on facebook and argue with pro-circ people. I live in a country where it isn't really a thing, so it's easy for me to combat their misinformation.

I do think that the reasoning is different. With FGM, it is often done to ensure that a woman feels no sexual pleasure. They do it because they think that if a woman feels anything but pain during sex, she is dirty or a whore.

I've seen a lot of rational from the pro-circ people and they do seem to believe it's healthier. They're not doing it with the sole purpose of making sure their son feels pain during sex. They're doing it because they have been told by doctors that it's cleaner. I spoke to one who was genuinely shocked when I explained that penile infections, UTIs, and penile cancer are all rare where I live, despite most men being intact. They thought that if a man is intact, it's inevitable that he'll experience serious health issues as a result.

Both are equally wrong. The reasoning behind FGM is more problematic.

It's not the same thing, FGM is usually much more extreme. But yes both should be banned! Boy circumcicision is not really an issue outside a few countries I think. Boys in my country are only circumcised if there is a medical reason for it and sometimes in the small jewis community we have for example.

You are right, the same argument for male circumcision is made for female circumcision in countries where it is prevalent. Cutting the foreskin on males literally reduces UTI risk and transmission if STIs when not using protection, and removing the labia minora and clitoral hood on females absolutely reduces UTI risk and STI transmission as well. People also say it is easier to keep clean and simply looks better, plus “girls should look like their mothers”etc.

There would be less skin to cause friction, possibly tear, and harbor disease, it’s as simple as that. In fact, many adult women in the US with recurrent UTIs and genital infections remove tissue on their labia and clitoral hood, it is a legitimate medical procedure and some people need it. But just because there is a tiny bit of purported health benefit to it, doesn’t mean we go around lopping off the labia of baby girls without their consent.

I can reduce my chance of getting an infection in my pinky fingers by 100% if I just preemptively remove my pinky fingers. It’s the stupidest argument.

I agree with the overall premise (circumcision of babies bad, people thinking it's good are messed up), but the reasoning is incorrect (btw do women decide on 99% cases of circumcision? I'm pretty sure the Hasidic community would strongly disagree 🤣).

FGM and circumcision aren't comparable. Circumcision removes a part of the foreskin, which might affect sexual pleasure to some extent, FGM in its lightest form partially removes the clitoral glans.

It's the exact same tissue as penile glans. FGM is like chopping a part of your penis head off. Or all of it. That's why it's a much bigger deal. It has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with good ol' biology.

Circumcision as such is not mutilation. It could be compared to labiaplasty rather than FGM. The distinction means that you can express informed consent for a circumcision or a labiaplasty - and they both can be safely, legally and professionally performed on consenting adults who might choose these procedures due to the perceived improvement of their quality of life. That cannot be said about FGM.

However, if you perform an otherwise perfectly fine irreversible body modification on someone who cannot express informed consent (unless you're saving their life/health), it's an act of mutilation. And as such it should be prohibited and criminalised regardless of motive.

So it's not mutilation because it is mutilation, it is mutilation because it's performed without consent.

We generally arrest people who are caught messing with kids' genitals and give them harsh prison sentences (unless they are billionaires apparently). I can't see why holding a scalpel while at it is somehow a redeeming circumstance.

Most men don’t bathe properly, especially when it comes to their dick, balls and between their ass cheeks. Being uncircumsized would just worse already poor hygiene.
