Why do you think there is such a divergence in how women who opt out of marriage are seen vs men?

Because women are pursued at much higher rates. It's that simple.

Women who are single are, rationally and in general, assumed to be so by choice. No man has been good enough. Men who are single are, rationally and in general, assumed to be so by failure. They haven't been good enough.

And no, that stereotype isn't fair. But it's not totally unfounded either.

Desirable men rarely get exhausted from the process. Dating is typically fun and easy for them. To be exhausted implies that you're putting in great effort for something that others find easy, and therefore a social signifier of weakness.

or decide climbing the corporate ladder is not worth their energy so they can contribute to a family they do not even want

It has never been easier in human history than in 2026 to find women who don't need support and don't want a family, be it ever or just anytime soon.

There are people who critique women for being single (starting with her parents usually). Have you heard about "the wall", "crazy cat lady" and so on? There are people who view this woman as someone broken and subhuman. It's empowering only in some circles, and it's empowering because before women didn't have this luxury, we're probably second generation that can afford it, and first that can actually choose it and choose friend who will support us. We remember out mothers and families of our parents age, and it's really empowering to not be stuck in that dynamic, what can i say.

So yeah, you can't really flip the gender and expect to be treated the same without same context. But there are people who don't shame men, there are stereotypes of forever bachelors as someone with high status. There are stereotypes of bitter and unwanted men who chose to tell "i quit" when they are fired.

The people trying to empower women trying to stay single are often liberal or progressive women. In conservative circles and many male circles, women who choose to be single are actively shamed for it.

To add to this, a man choosing to stay single is one thing, a man saying he chooses to stay single while constantly complaining about women and being bitter is another. The latter is far more common.

Because everything in the manosphere, mgtow, incels, redpilled etc are all about controlling/dating /getting a women and this is what men are going for.

The difference between these groups and groups like 4b, is women cutting men out from their own personal life snd learning to live independently and in contentment with themselves.

Mens groups are always about women and that’s why a lot of these self help groups for men end up getting closed down because they start hating women and start celebrating violence or rape against them.

Part of the difference is behavioral. Women who choose to remain single are often just...single. They build friendships, careers, hobbies, and lives outside of romantic relationships.

Men who "opt out" of dating, especially online, often spend years publicly complaining about women, modern dating, or feminism before announcing they're done. That shapes the public perception.

There's also evidence that women, on average, adapt to singlehood better than men. Women tend to maintain stronger social support networks outside of romantic relationships, while many men rely much more heavily on a partner for emotional support. So a single woman is often viewed as someone choosing a lifestyle, whereas a single man is more often perceived—fairly or unfairly—as someone who couldn't make relationships work.

If men quietly lived fulfilling single lives with friends, hobbies, pets, travel, and community the way many single women do, I don't think society would react nearly as negatively. The stereotype isn't just about being single—it's about the pattern that's become associated with how many men publicly talk about being single.

There is an entire culture and even industries of personal wellness around women remaining single and happy.

Those industries are profiting off of them lol. Woman coded stuff is overpriced to hell >50% markup

and decide they are just going to work a low stress job, have a pet, and solo travel - are often viewed as lazy, eccentric, weak etc.

Because all women inherently have plenty of options, including the least desirable bottom of the barrel women, so a woman not in a relationship is choosing not to and is looked upon as strong by society.

A man on the other hand is looked upon negatively because it is understood that most men want to partner and that the entire onus of a relationship is on him making society see it as he failed to measure up.

The alternative could simply be that women are nearly always looked at in a positive light and have nearly no standard to have to meet.

The main goal in a woman's life for most people was getting married, even when it wasn't the life she wanted.

Furthermore bachelor's are usually men choosing to be single but still having a ton of sex, which is way different from the average man. First, I don’t think any less of single men who only care to work enough to maintain themselves without extravagance. Peace of mind for them seems more important than long working hours, or stressful careers. If that’s your thing, I’ll never judge it. Second, I think it’s because the studies that have come out showing married men rating higher in happiness, and married women rating much lower. The results of these studies could make people proud of a woman committed to staying single, and sad for a man? Idk. I’m just guessing.

Yeah, single men die faster than married men, because women stopped being rehab centers for men.

Men don't take care of themselves. They don't go to the doctor's, they eat a toddler's diet with no vegetables and live in a frat house. Turns out, a full gun safe with an empty fridge full of expired condiments is detrimental to your health. They also do more drugs and drink more because there is no woman slapping that crap out of their hands. The average man is more likely to be fatter (77% of the US population) than the women (69%) they criticize.

Have men considered not doing any of these things? Of course not. Because it's unpaid work they expect women to do for them.

Women, on the other hand, don't live in a hovel with a camp chair, mattress on the floor, a PS5 and a TV. Because they don't expect some guy to come in and decorate for them. They also make brunch plans for Sunday. Surprise! They live longer and happier lives than single men.

I think it’s just the societal expectation swinging wildly in the opposite direction. You can make the argument that in the past, society judged women more harshly than men, so now society is swinging the other way to judge men more harshly. The same can be applied to other aspects like body positivity.

I would also include that these low level discourses usually have all women align together as well some cuck men. Men it comes to men it’s more scattered alignment.

For example, if you said women should be single and proud there would be a bunch of women and cuck men singing her praises. If you said men should be single and proud then a bunch of women will come out to disagree with you, cuck men will disagree or in some cases be silent because they don’t want to sound like a hypocrite and their moral (cuck) obligation to women is strong.

Not at all. It is just a bunch of miserable women who like to promote toxic positivity. Had lots of female friends who said we are going celibate for a full year until 3 weeks in and the ovulation phase kicked in and they were calling exes or whatever of any guy to have sex.

There is a reason why some women are chronically single and it is because no one wants them. If they were really in peace they wouldn't talk about it and make thousands of videos on social media about how great it is to feel single. More often it feels like they are trying to cover a wound or gaslight themselves after a break up they haven't moved on.

The difference is that men are pushed to their limits and are shamed so they can change. Women on the other hand prefer to hear lies instead of brutal truths. That's why single women are celebrated while single men are frowned upon. Also more single women, more options for men and more clients in lots of industries that specifically target unmarried women. While taken men are seen as more desirable and are also targeted as they have to spend more. A single dude will pay only a fraction of what a married guy or someone in a relationship would.

This is very true.

For a long time, women were significantly oppressed due to culture. That has changed to the point where they're mostly advantaged now. People will become I irate that I write that but will struggle to give an example where women don't have the same opportunity as men or are even advantaged. (And when someone brings up abortion, which they always do in this conversation, first tell us what you think about paper abortions for men and the fact that 45% of women vote Republican in the US and vote these laws into place). Right now, in popular culture, it's common and encouraged to talk about how well women are doing and how men are falling behind. That's not true or based on anything real other than relationships and dating, where there is truth to it. But in general, the culture has changed to the point where it's not socially acceptable to criticize women, but it is for men. How many examples of TV Shows can you give where a husband is portrayed as a bumbling fool and the wife is the smart one who keeps everything working? Countless.

As for what to do about it.... men just have to advocate for themselves. Men have to try to change the culture to be less anti-men. It is changing somewhat, but it will be slowly. Men will continue to opt of dating for the near future because it is so difficult for the average guy and men need to try to portray that decision as one of independence. Most women who are single aren't single because they want to be single... they're single because they've become frustrated with relationships and the men they want, don't want them. Men need to try to create the image of themselves as women have done.

Because male singleness was always accepted but the archetypal spinster was shamed, over millennia the solitary male is heroised and with the coming of the Christian tradition the celibate male is assigned a higher status but even in this very tradition Christianity, a nun is still a bride of Christ. Likewise in the western tradition the solitary male are seen as a disciplined sages but the celibate females are seen as surrogate mothers to all the pains of the world due to their sacrificing of marriage.

Many girls grow up barely perceiving a single life as an option, from a young age they read stories about Prince Charming and play with toys like dolls that fortify the idea that integration into the nuclear family is destiny. Boys do not have these demands placed in them. They are encouraged to dislike girls and to play with anti human toys like aliens, dinosaurs and weaponry.

Typically when women choose to remain single, their reasons are legitimate grievances towards gender roles. They do not want to be objectified and pressured into sex, both work a job outside the home and be primarily responsible for domestic and childcare labor. These are the factors that have given rise to movements such as 4B in South Korea.

However among men who choose to remain single, their reasons are often (not always) rooted in misogyny. They think modern women are no longer submissive, are not playing their traditional gender role, etc. And quite often these men do not even realize it themselves but their reasons are rooted in misogyny in the ways I just mentioned. This is the reason why men are much more stigmatized for choosing to remain single, because quite often they are simply resentful of being unable to take advantage of women.

It is important to note that there are legitimate reasons that men can reject dating and remain single without being misogynistic. Let's say a man feels a strong paternal instinct, wants to be the primary parent raising his children, and needs a woman to be his breadwinner to support him in raising his dream family. He'll rather not have kids at all than be the breadwinner himself to support a family which he doesn't get to spend much time with. This is a legitimate reason that is not misogynistic in any way, but it hasn't been normalized in society as a grievance for men; if a man actually said this irl you'll probably think of him as some weirdo. (Bigdonut if you're reading this, please don't try to claim that this hypothetical man describes you.)

IDK I "feel like" (as in I don't have data on this but this is the way it seems to me) it's the opposite:

Men who choose to remain single really just seem to have a higher frame of IDGAF than women. Women who choose to remain single seem more fragile to criticism of their choices and tend to get more triggered by it. This may be largely a cultural thing. I think a lot of it may be boomer parents. Thinking about my family, my sister (who is younger and now married) got more pressure from my parents to find a man whereas my parents fully don't care one bit that I'm 39 and single AF.
