In my country, men do (thank God) take care of their hygiene and put on clean clothes everyday, but the most entitled men often have obese gut bigger than a pregnant lady. And it looks really bad because men here have smaller frame and shorter than western man. I was fat my entire childhood until early 20s, so I know the reality of having such a body - it bloody sucks 24/7. And I don't even dare to flirt with handsome men because I just feel... nah.

But fat men with obese gut be flirting with 9s and 10s while simultaneously shitting on fat women, calling them all sorts of names and treating them like dirt. I just can't with the hypocrisy of these people. I don't wanna hate fat people because I was once like that, but I am now veryyyyy wary of fat men because their sense of entitlement is just crazy.

I like men who take care of their physique because I am too, but it is like finding a unicorn here - gym is still considered "the place where gay people go" like taking care of your body is "gay", but looking like a pregnant lady is not gay? Huh.

I think many Asian men do tend to take care of themselves and it's refreshing being in Korea and seeing men being comfortable in their sexuality in terms of wearing purses, wearing makeup, etc.

BUT-I wish people wouldn't romanticize any culture based on appearances. There are so many problems with misogyny, pedo stuff, and rape culture here. The men may look better but inside-they are the same.

Note aside, I suspect that when she says "Western" men she means probably the Anglosphere and maybe some extra countries. And I'm tired of that, but not gonna rant about it.

The overweight, "dorky and dirty t-shirt" look is not that common in Southern Europe, neither in Scandinavia. I'm a city full of expats and I notice many American/Brit/Aussies definitely feel inadequate and dorkier in comparison to other men, including other white guys.

My girlfriends and I were just talking about this. We’ve come across so many duds on hinge who look way older than their listed age. So either they’re lying about their age, or they just don’t take care of their skin. Me and my girlfriends all take care of our skin. Even my younger brother who I would say is a HVM doesn’t take care of his skin like he should. Since he’s my younger brother, I get on his case about it and help him pick out skincare so his future gf or wife won’t have to train him and so he won’t look 39 when he hits 30.

TBH one of my Asian exes shit himself in public and had the WORST hygiene I've ever seen in my life. (despite being in med school) not counting his crazy, I do agree there are different cultural standards for East Asian men vs Western men in regards to appearances.

I was actually thinking today about how masculinity can differ based on cultural expectations, and how dating as an Asian guy in the US could be completely different than in Asia, etc.

However. Something deeply disturbing to me about the kpop trend is that Korean people are becoming fetish objects for western audiences. (women have been treated as an exotic other in western culture in the past/present and I worry this same toxic pattern of thinking could be applied to some kpop fandoms towards men as well) I'm not saying this is what OP is doing at all. But it is something I've been wondering about and actually really wanting to discuss. You can appreciate kpop without appropriating and idolizing certain aspects of Korean culture, while ignoring other parts of East Asian masculinity which are extremely problematic (Domestic violence is a huge problem in Korea) This is not saying that Korean culture is bad or that Korean men are inherently bad in any way. (Toxic masculinity is a global problem and needs to be called out in any context) As western countries are waking up to the fact that a lot about our culture is problematic and needs to change, we seem to cherry pick parts of other cultures while largely remaining ignorent. I do think it's positive how Asian men are now being considered attractive and sexually appealing and hopefully overcoming the sexless nerd stereotype in the US.

*TW* for the next paragraph and I might delete later but I really wanted to put it into writing.

I think it's so touchy for me because of how violent my Korean ex was towards me- *tw* he grew up with an abusive father who tried to kill his mother repeatedly and I saw those same behavioral patterns with him, I could care less about how much he looked like a kpop star when he was trying to strangle me. The last time we talked he said he wanted to just beat some sense into me and then he could forgive me for breaking up with him. Domestic violence rates are extremely high in Korea and (Korean) friends did try to warn me about this. Ironically, the next Korean guy I dated told me DV was a huge problem but *tw* always crossed my boundaries and I woke up to him touching me in my sleep multiple times. Of course, this is not every single guy from Korea and this is a societal problem that happens all over the world, but toxic masculinity needs to be called out in any context. I might delete this later but after those expiriences, I'm sick of how libfems discourage thinking critically or criticizing any non-western culture without gasp worrying about being perceived as racist/ignorant. Yes, western masculinity is problematic and needs to change, but Asian misogyny can be problematic as well. I may not know enough about Korean culture and I will happily take a backseat to Korean/Asian women who could speak more about this, but my lived experiences still count for something (I'm not trying to paint all Korean men as the same, but this is a societal problem, just like we have so many similar problems in the US that need to be discussed as well)

I thought I was gaining an ally against white patriarchal BS dating outside of my race with Asian men but I didn't take into consideration how brutal Asian patriarchy could be.

It's not even just western (which I'm assuming is codeword for American here), European men, and African men both seem to take more care into their style. It's mostly in the US/Canada and Uk (I'm assuming that last one), where women are dressed and made up and the men just show up.

Do men tend to have clearer skin tho? I notice less have acne, but they tend to be judged less closely on their skin. Their skin stay looking and feeling dry.

I dunno, there's definitely a real critique there too though. Koreans in particular don't seem to like men that look like men. I knew a Korean guy who was stylish but looked quite masculine compared to most stylish Koreans I've known (which I found more attractive). But he'd send me pics with the filters that gave him the typical androgynous look, like he was embarrassed that he looked like a man and not a boy. One of the few people I ever met who was more attractive irl than with filters 😂

I give my boyfriend my extra skincare products (because I tend to hoard and then worry about them going bad; or just because I didn’t enjoy something and would prefer to move on to something else instead) and he l o v e s it. He says it makes him feel so fancy! His skincare routine before we met was bar soap, twice a day, extra water. Now he exfoliates, cleanses, moisturizes, applies sunscreen twice a day, and can identify how to use serums. I even got him to do a sheet mask and 10 step kbeauty routine with me last weekend. It’s so great.
