This is a such a strange way of thinking.

"Love" is a process. It's the accumulation of years of commitment, memories, social entanglement, and mutual growth. Mentally healthy people don't just throw that away for the chance at a more shiny object over there.

Nobody thinks this way about best friend from childhood or their mother. What does "better" or "perfect" mean in comparison to a person you've shared so much with?

There's such a thing as responsibility, or duty. To answer your question, no. If I commit to a woman, even if there are much more beautiful ones out there, I'll remain committed. Why? Because if I did commit to her, that means she was someone, who's company I enjoy, and who's values align with my own.

Even if Chris Hemsworth was your perfect man, he'd have some traits/do things that annoy you, because once you remove the glamour of his celebrity status, he's just another person. People have flaws, people have baggage, people have their own little quirks that might not mesh well with yours. Dwelling on the idea of whether someone would leave you if their dream person was snapped into existence is pointless. It's like me wondering if I would take down the government if I had super powers or if I'd just continue my life as it is. It's an interesting shower thought but, ultimately, it's not going to happen because superpowers and perfect people with no flaws who are tailor-made for you don't exist.

Well first off, I would see a therapist about this whole deeply depressive and OCD like hyper fixation on this topic. It's really not THAT deep.

But if by true love, you mean unconditional love, then no. It doesn't exist. At least not very often and not healthily.

Most relationships, and 100% of healthy relationships are completely conditional. For example, I love my boyfriend to the moon and back. Yet if he ever hit me or forced me to have sex with him, or idk put me in danger, that love would be taken away. I know he loves me too, and so much, yet I know damn well if I started acting crazy, he would walk away. Because when it all comes down to it, love is a verb. It is a choice.

Maybe infatuation is unconditional idk. Maybe being so infatuated with someone that you tolerate bad behavior or abuse or whatever other kind of dealbreakers that person bends to "love" some person is the kind of "true love" you're talking about. But it's not healthy, it's not sustainable, and it's damaging.

I think people are just conditioned to idealize this fantasy of doing anything for someone because it seems so grandeur.

But in reality, conditional love is much more special. Because it means that every single day, you work to be a great partner and you make the conscious choice to love each other and respect each other's standards. Conditional love means that you agree on boundaries with each other and weather storms together while being strong enough as a team not to tear each other apart or break each other's boundaries.

Anyone who's ever been in "true love", wants it to be conditional. That's the thing. They want their partner to have standards and high expectations of them. And they want to meet them. They want their partner to have high self esteem, high self respect, and they want to be respected for having those things as well.

We think we are entitled to the perfect person when in reality none of us is perfect. Me personally, if I found a woman I truly love and care for, I wouldn't dump them for any ideal partner ever. Cause I am not perfect either, and if they accept me for my faults, then I will accept them with their faults too. "true love" is something that is built between two people and so is wholly unique.

Even if I could find someone more attractive, funnier, etc, they would not have the connection I have built with my partner (in this hypothetical true love scenario).

"True love" is building a life with someone, sharing goals, and knowing the best and worst parts of them. It is not something you can instantly trade away because no one else can provide it, it needs to be built over time.

The concept of "Love" seems to have acquired a lot of different meanings. In the sense of attraction as OP describes, it would seem lust would be more appropriate to use. A person may get into a relationship with someone for whom they have more attraction for than anyone else and no one else ever comes along for whom they feel more attraction but I wouldn't call their relationship "true love".

I liked Scott Peck's description of love as "the expansion of your limits for the benefit of yourself or someone else.". He went on to say"Falling in love is the collapse of all limits."

I'd probably argue that "True love" is built over time in a workable relationship not just found in an individual someone meets.

It's a fantasy to think that God or whoever made a person on this planet specifically for you, who has all of your desires but no flaws.

People date and marry each other because they align well enough to what their partner is looking for. When you've built a life with that person and you're committed to each other, they understand you the best, they know how to love you the best, and they know all of these things about you that other people don't.

And that's infinitely better than some rando who's 6'2" but doesn't even know if I like roses vs. tulips, what Ben & Jerry's flavor to get when I'm sad, the best way to blow my back the fuck out, etc... All of these intimate details we learn about our partners that create a special place for them in our hearts.

I do agree that very few people actually find TRUE LOVE.

I think it would have to be 2 people who are exactly each other type looks wise, and they are both committed to staying in shape, and who have great chemistry in the bedroom, and love each other equally, where neither feels like they settled (which is very rare), and have the same beliefs, values, religion, class, wealth.

So its basically impossible to find that

you'd have to be successful and attractive and find someone successful and attractive, who you connect with in bed, who also thinks like you

anyone not an 8 or above is out because your partner would feel like they settled in the looks department

anyone not successful is out because your partner would feel like they settled in the financial stability department

anyone not good in bed is out because they feel like they settled in that department

that's why its so rare because usually people settle in some areas not all but some

The people who do leave good partners for the “perfect” one end up regretting it. Why? Because no one is perfect. You are falling for a lie. You think they’re more perfect than your current partner but they’re not. Once the newness and shine wears away - they’re a person with flaws the same as any other. And most people know this. Most people know leaving your family or husband for a lie would be foolish and would break his heart. A few dumb people (men and women) try to go for this new aMaZiNg partner, and are quickly disillusioned. This is why good LTR are started with love and a spark of attraction but their foundations are built upon trust, respect, honesty, communication, desire, passion and mutual goals and aspirations. This is a non-objective, imaginary way to approach the issue. You can’t just magically find such a partner. And you can’t magically know someone meets those criteria at first sight. That would require entering an exclusive relationship with them.

If you do find something that your current lover is lacking, that you didn’t know before, due to meeting someone new (let’s call her Jane), you could then see if you can get that from your existing lover. And, if you can’t, then you can decide how important that is to you. If it’s so important that you’d rather find someone else, then you find someone else. Maybe you try dating Jane, but it’s not a guarantee that Jane is good enough in other aspects that you can’t know before hand. Love becomes an aspect of your identity unlike many other things in your life. Being confident in who you are and reconciling the fact that exterior information won't change who you are, or what you feel, is an attractive quality to possess.

Life is, for many, not just a matter of gaining greater or more perfect material circumstances; it's an endeavor where you learn to care for and take care of people and things on a personal level.

Knowing that you love someone, and that they love you, and that nothing can change that, is something that many men and women want for themselves. It's an ideal that a lot of people aspire to, I think, even if many people find difficulty justifying it in their lives.

True love is a complex concept that I think we're still trying to define. It can obviously mean a lot of things--not just a monogamous commitment or loyalty. Oftentimes we define it in contrast to relationship paradigms that we know from the past; true love can be about loving the person that you're in a relationship to, not for their money or material circumstances, social or otherwise. Or it can mean loving someone outside of the purpose of reproducing.

Having faith in true love can be difficult because it's difficult to even define; but I think that most people experience something in their lives that they can associate with true love, whether that's in a sexual partnership or a familial relationship.

We aren't static. All the time we are developing and changing and becoming - in varying directions - as people, and this development is often heavily influenced by those around us. Thus two people choosing to sync their development together may well over time intertwine them in terms of who they are and who they want, in many ways what they become being in part tailored to the other person within that relationship. Thus even if if a romantic prospect can almost always be outdone on the initial impression, once you have conditioned yourself somewhat to that person and they to you, they will be much more difficult to beat.

In my relationship, there are some conditions. If someone cheats, that's grounds for divorce for both of us. If he abuses my cat, I'd get rid of my boyfriend. Why would a perfect person want to be with me? I don't have the value-budget to afford a person that fulfills every wish i have in a partner. And neither do you, or anyone else. We all just decide between sidegrades of partners of varying combination of traits of different price categories. Unless you just pick "the first person available", and actually spend some time dating and finding out your value ceiling and your own preferences and weightings of traits, chances are, if you think you are in a very good relationship, that this is already the maximum you can get for what you can afford. All other options are just sidegrades that don't make your life more fulfilled, just different. And in this scenario, a change of partners generally is a net negative, as the cost of breakup and all that goes with it, not just financially, is there and just a minor gain of a new initial "in love" stage is there to get.

creating an ideal partner in your head is so stupid. A real person will never live up to it or you'll never find them. If you try you whole life to find them you're going to ruin your emotions towards relationships after hundreds of dates/hookups.

I don't think anyone who would trade in a decent partner thinking an "ideal" one is a hyper-busy entitled movie star is going to be happy, ever.

Unconditional love sure exists. You need to be realistic and ask yourself if you would stick by your partner if they got fat, covered in burn-scars, and were absolutely hideous and repulsive in every metric imaginable.

The issue is that people have all these criteria in terms of career and looks in dating. But once you lose those things, then you'll be left with the few people that actually love you without conditions.

Most relationships are mid. For example, there's one super chill girl whose relationship with her boyfriend seems like some normal high school sweethearts ass relationship on the surface. But if you look closer he's actually kind of lame fr and definitely not good enough for her. Reminds me of one of my guy friends whose girlfriend is way lamer than him. I honestly don't believe that either of them would be that interested in each other as platonic, same-sex friends.

I think certain aspects are required for love to flourish certainly I think money , men and women maintaining smv for example are very important . "true love" as in disney love or an ideal love isnt real, just like world peace is an ideal that will probably never actually exist on this planet. humans in general try to chase ideals that can never actually be fully achieved and "true love" is one of them.
