I just act like myself and do whatever I want. Ain't got time to pretend to be whatever bs people expect "masculine" is.

Masculinity, I think, is all rooted in valuing yourself and having the confidence that “you are enough” to get that which you desire. Or at the very least, that you are methodically undertaking the steps to “be” enough to get that which you desire.

If you’re into Barbie dolls and ponies, you are unapologetically so. You don’t hide it, you don’t flaunt it, you just do it. And those who appreciate you will stick around, while those who don’t will leave you hanging. And you’re okay with that.

It is recognizing that at times you are the expert and should lead, and then having the balls to then lead. And at other times, when you are not the expert, being able to defer to the best person for the job. Ie: not rooting your identity in leadership.

It is recognizing when your extra efforts are going unnoticed, and then having the courage to cut off the extras without being an asshole about it. In your case, if taking on extra shifts isn’t ingratiating you with your team and doesn’t give you enough extra income to make it worthwhile, then growing the spine to say “no, I have more pressing obligations that demand my attention” to your boss. And standing firm on your “no.”

It’s confidence. A willingness to have some self sacrifice for the greater good without becoming a doormat. A willingness to lead when it’s appropriate. And the humility to follow when that is appropriate.

At least, this is what masculinity means to me.

I have some traditionally masculine hobbies, and a complete disinterest in many more conventionally masculine hobbies. I offer suggestions and leadership when the subject matter is in my field. And I defer to others when it is not. I have no shame in asking for help. And I have no qualms with apologizing for when I overstep or am otherwise incorrect.

I sure as shit don’t flex muscles and grunt. That doesn’t work in my field of work.

I feel like it’s simply projecting strength and fortitude to do what needs to be done even in the face of incredible adversity. To build up and protect by all means even if the cost isn’t always beneficial.

Masculinity is having an ethical code of conduct, and following it even when it's difficult, inconvenient, or unpopular with others. E.g. you don't feel like going to the gym, but because you decided it's important and healthy to be in shape, you do it. Or there's a girl you like, or that you think may be into you; you ask her out or (if you're on a date) invite her back to your place even if you might be embarrassed from the rejection. Masculinity encompasses all the traits and behaviors driven by male genes, testosterone and other androgens. Masculine physical traits are set in stone and are based off of dimorphism, Ie: taller height, more robust facial structure, smaller eyes, bigger bones, v-tapered body, greater muscle tone, larger penis, more body hair, etc.

The behaviors of masculinity are harder to define because they will encompass any behavior driven by testosterone and other androgens. The goal of testosterone is to make you more competitive for reproduction. Behaviors that enhance reproductive success vary greatly depending on context. Testosterone can drive contradictory behaviors depending on the context so long as those behaviors are seen by the individual as the best way to achieve greater status.

All the things you mentioned above are masculine if the drive to do them was based off of enhancing one’s status relative to sexual competitors.

Though outright trying to define masculinity is a waste of time because the specific behaviors that enhance reproductive success are volatile and subject to change depending on your era, geographical location, cultural norms, etc.

Generally though a greater propensity for risk taking, a desire to compete, and therefore greater aggression (physical or not) are the staples that all other “masculine” behaviors stem from.

How you look is entirely contextual. The smart move is to de-escalate to begin with (appealing to ego or disarming them with absurdity). If you're visibly shaking at the knees because the other guy is like twice your size, then obviously you're not going to look brave, and if you throw fists and lose, it wouldn't look good either. Only winning move is to not play, but if you have to play, win.

The guys in “tough” prisons, are those guys masculine? The ones who will kill you if you don’t give them your shoes. Is that masculinity to be “kill or be killed mentality”. Or is masculinity knowing that being kind and working together takes you further than making enemies everywhere. That guys shoes you stole might kill you in your sleep.

Is bullying masculine? Sure. And as long as you have the threat, you are powerful and feared. Problem is, if a challenge is successful, you lose virtually all of your street cred overnight. It's also a rather crude form of asserting yourself (though effective for some contexts). You get compliance, but only until you can be toppled. You don't get cooperation, unless it's from those looking to use you.

Your second part, being strategic and fostering a network, is independent of that. Bullies are friends with other bullies, and they carve out territory. Great men also foster networks because it is terribly inefficient to do every single thing by yourself.

Dominance is asserting yourself over a situation. However, you might still take others' viewpoints into account. Domineering is doing the same, but it's more your way or the highway. In both cases, you get a say in the outcome, but one of them will get cooperation, and the other compliance (and probably resentment).

If I ask you what we should eat for dinner, and you say here's the top three options, choose one, you are taking lead and asserting yourself to the situation. You were given executive power and you wielded it with some consideration of my input. If you said we're eating steak, I protested, and you tell me to go starve, then that's being domineering. I might still go eat steak with you anyways, but I'm not going to enjoy the experience, nor will my assessment of you be positive.

Do real men say no I’m not taking the shift because I don’t want it its your problem your short. Or do they take the shift because the boss might help them out too down the road.

A 'real' man can do either. Being helpful is masculine - you just can't let other people's needs completely trample your own. If they see it as you doing them a favor, then you both win. If you do it because you're afraid of saying no, then you have boundary issues.

How do you deal with being emotionally hurt, do you tell them hey don’t talk to me like that. Or pretend it didn’t hurt you because men are “strong” and don’t get hurt.

Who is they? Some rando who doesn't matter? Then yeah, ignore it. People are assholes. If it's someone you trust or interact with often, you get to set the tone of how you interact (within reason). You can cut out people who are a net negative value to your life.

Does a masculine man tell his boss to “fuck himself” when the boss is being a douche or abusive. Or does he shut up and take it and “absorb” it because the pay is great and real men can suffer thru shit.

A masculine man can do either. Some people think throwing words back and forth is the way to go. Others shrug and bide their time because the perks are worth it.

The term "real man" IMO refers to a prescription, a declaration of how men 'ought' to be.

Masculinity though IMO is just a description of a norm of male behaviour. From research and personal opinion:

Masculinity;

(Generally) emotionally flat.

Risk taking.

Competitive.

Low in agreeableness. (Big 5 personality test.)

Athletic or strong.

More of an interest in things or abstract thinking, than relationships.

Direct.

Femininity;

Nurturing.

Risk averse.

Emotionally expressive.

More of an interest in people and relationships, than things or abstract thinking.

I think you might be a little too concerned with "what gets me laid" rather than "what is a man".

There is a reason pick up artists still get pussy, if they try hard enough. But I would never want to be or act like one of those guys.

There is a man on YouTube with a channel called "self sufficient me" who I think is one of the ultimate examples of a masculine man. Look him up and you'll see what I'm talking about. He's strong, confident, capable, and nice as a bowl of peaches. His wife is the breadwinner, he spends most of his time raising children, cooking and gardening. He's pretty far from what a redpiller would consider an Alpha male.

You can tell he's the kind of person that is liked everywhere he goes (and wherever he isn't liked, I'm sure it doesn't bother him at all). His best feature is his "jack of all trades" attitude: whenever he lacks the skills or experience to do something, he gives it a shot anyway, even if it turns out mediocre.

I have no idea what his personal life is like but based on the glimpses of his personality through YouTube videos, he's a masculine man that I think is a good thing to try and emulate.

But if I had a family to support, my dignity would come from that instead, and my career would have been a means to that end. There’s no easy answer to this. I’ve read plenty of the books for men trying to give my younger brothers advice, be available to them (especially since my dad isn’t the greatest role model of the type of man they want to be).

Focus less on the masculinity and just what type of person you want to be: Following the golden rule “treat others as you would like to be treated” (within reason) is a good starting point.

Do you want to be a man who makes people feel safe and warm? Or do you want to intimidate others with your presence? Do you want to ever be a father/family man, or just a permanent bachelor? Do you want to have a clean appearance, or is physicality unimportant to you? Do you want to have a big social circle and go out often, or do you prefer smaller groups and 1:1 dynamics?

If you start to ask yourself who you want to be, answer those questions, then live authentically to the direction you want to go in… then that is masculinity. Just know who you are, be confident in it, but be open to change and growth.

Just two cents from a woman who appreciates “masculine” men but weeds out the toxicity fairly well.

It means seeking true wisdom and being willing to die for what is right.
