The headlines referencing her “$140 million dollar divorce settlement” are talking about the amount of money they are going to need to split. They have 140 million dollars in marital assets. She’s not paying him 140 million, they have acquired 140 million dollars while married,so it’s how much they now need to split in the divorce.

Even though it’s money she earned, she earned it while while married to him. They both own 100% of any assets acquired during marriage regardless of who earned what, like every other married couple in America without a prenup. He’s not getting 140 million, at most he would get half granted to him by a court in the state of California, unless they settle on a different split outside of court by way of agreement.

She’s not worth 190 million, she’s worth 150 million. Every single article about her divorce, as well as a quick google search, will tell you that. The alimony system for those in ‘showbiz’ is pretty fucked up tbh, just got to look at Brendan Fraser’s case for a good example. Judges look at the average amount they make per year and then make the yearly payments a percentage of that, but obviously when you’re an actor or musician your yearly earnings fluctuate massively. An unfair alimony essentially means they can’t retire and puts the pressure on them to keep producing good content in an industry where the audience decides whether you go bankrupt that year or not.

Iirc, in Fraser’s case the amount he had to pay was calculated based on the amount of money he made in his most successful year as an actor ever, which he could never live up to again after that because career income obviously fluctuated. The result was him living in a small flat having to basically declare bankruptcy while his ex-wife was living in a mansion, and she was still the one receiving money each year.

I don’t know what the situation here with Adele is, I hope it’s not akin to the Brendan Fraser situation because that looked traumatic.
