Something that's worked for me in the past: I figure out a really pretty outdoor spot with a picnic table, and we go there in the daytime to drink mimosas and play Scrabble. Seriously. Bring a mimosa picnic and a Scrabble board. (Or Pictionary. Or any other geeky board game.)

Another thing that's worked for me: anytime I'm hanging out in the city with some time to kill, I type in the words "secret" or "hidden" into Google along with the name of the neighborhood I'm hanging out in. And I keep a list in my phone of all the cool, off-the-radar things in various places around the city (i.e. galleries, gardens, views, speakeasy bars, etc.) Few things bond people like discovering a secret together.

I usually take first dates to either the aquarium or ikea. I've always loved the aquarium, and it shows something I'm interested in. As for ikea, I just like to run around that place. Also I like the food.

Story time: Second semester in med school. The ethics professor began his lecture on how to establish a doctor-patient relationship by first asking the class where did they go on our first date.

I was sitting front row, dead center. He points to me and say "Reactant, where did you take your girlfriend on your first date?" Without a moments hesitation, I said "Forest." The classroom got quite, he paused in confusion, and the entire class erupted in laughter.

Apparently its creepy to take a girl to the forest. I didn't get a chance to explain that my gf at the time went hiking together and spotted a fox super far away and how memorable the experience was. But I was seen as a creep for that week and girls would approach my friends and ask if I was safe to work with. Sigh.

I'll still take a girl hiking if she's into nature.

It's the most unoriginal, boring, unimpressive and harmful thing you can do. Seriously!

Alternatively, a toy shop is something that I particularly like. You don't say Hey, we're going to a toy shop., instead you start walking in a busy square/street and when you get to the toy shop suggest you go inside just to browse. You don'tn buy anything, it's just...fun, you are reminded of your childhood, your previous toys...it leads to a deeper connection with your date, and more importantly it's something unique. You can bet that in her long or short dating history, she's been to movies, fucking restaurants...but never to a toy shop.

From a female perspective, if a guy is going to take any bit of competitiveness to heart, don't bother with billiards, bowling, mini golf or video games.

Personally, its been the beginning of the end for many many first dates. I don't purposely lose for the guy to win, nor do I play hard to win myself. Whatever happens happens. I think most guys want to set the tone of "I'm better than you" at the beginning of a relationship or dating. At least it felt that way with the guys who never made it to date 2. Maybe someone can shed some light on this?

Date ideas that went pretty well have been trips to the zoo, taking a walk around a cities flower garden (if the city has one), touring a museum, grabbing some gelati and talking/people watching. Trying something new together is good, like an ethnic restaurant. The purpose is to get to know one another and build up as a 'team'.

Comedy club - You are both laughing which creates all kinds of good chemicals inside your brains.
Art Gallery - I have had some great dates coming up with all kinds of fun interpretations of the art before us.
Pool halls, ping pong, etc
Flea Market - Farmers market. Looking at random stuff is fun!
Toy store - Make her feel like a kid again
Bowling - Most major cities now have bowling alleys that feature good drinks/food and only allow 21+ after a certain time.
Dance class
Themed walk. I've never done this myself but once when I lived in London had a friend take us on a Charlie Chaplain themed walk. We walked by the house he was born, his school, and ended at a pub he used to work at. Its unique and different. If you are in NYC you could go visit places featured in movies.
Dinner - I know some people are against this idea but when I do it I simply split the bill with the girl. A lot of modern women are totally cool with this.
Live music - Don't be that guy though that talks loudly in an intimate club. Find a venue thats more open and conducive to talking (an outdoor street/music festival, etc)

Just make sure you're doing more than one thing for the date. Switch venues, locations, activities... at least once, ideally twice or thrice. Even if it's just going to the mall, hopping over to the skatepark, and finishing off at the ice cream parlor (things I figure suburbanites would do - if you live in a big city and can't think of anything, you're lame and should read Models), make sure you're making a dynamic experience out of it.

I do the exact same thing every single first date. Same bar, same table, no food just drinks. I buy a bottle of wine o we split it over conversation. 4 out of 5 times she buys a round or two after. Food Crawl - Same idea as a pub crawl but a little more fun and doesn't sound like you are trying to get her wasted. You want to pick a maximum of four probably as anymore than that and you will be too full and spend way to much money. Order light simple things, cheese plate, or other light appetizers. Things that are going to be not only cheaper on the menu but also not as filling and quicker to make.

You can also make it a fun build up to the date. For example four days before I reveal one of the choices we are going to, and let her pick one the following day, and then I pick one and she picks one the day before.

The other nice thing is it allows you to go to different places in one date so you can give her the perception that she is spending more time with you or that it is more than one date over the course of one evening.

Girl knew of a piano bar in town. We first get there and there is an older man at the piano, and about 5 other people in the bar total. The old guy comes over and hands us a song list, sort of like karaoke with a live piano.

We have our drinks, and after numerous calls from the old guy to sing, I finally go up with my date and we blast out a song. My date doesn't sing, but I do, privately. Never had many chances to sing in front of people, but for the rest of the night I rock out like 9-10 songs with this old guy and another guy on the saxophone. The bar becomes more crowded, and people start singing along to "Hey Jude" and some rock, RnB tunes. People are requesting me to sing and what not, thanking me for entertaining them, etc.

All in all it was an awesome night, I felt like a rock star. Even if you can't sing, I like to think Karaoke is a fun first date. It shows you have some balls if nothing else.

Not a place but a tip. Try taking some alternative form of transportation during the date. I like to ride bike, longboard, walk or take a subway. You can start off in a car but go some place downtown and tell her that parking might be difficult and if she's willing to rent a bike or take a cab there.

Motorbikes.

Most girls won't get on a bike unless they know you at least a little bit, but I've had a 100% success rate when they do. You get all that attribution of arousal stuff from the adrenaline rush, plus most girls haven't spent much, if any, time on the back of a bike.

But don't show off and ride like a numpty, just take it easy, at least for a little while.

Sailing! There is a place that hires out small catermerans ($30per hour) on the river, dont really need special clothes or anything, is lots of fun and a great way to isolate! Just make sure if your going to kiss out there the sheet isnt going to change side and whack you both with the boom! hahah. Other than that San churros (choclate cafe) is always a winner...except I think the staff know me by name now haha.

Because my town is pretty boring I've started taking girls onto the roofs of buildings with a bottle of wine, and a thick blanket. The adrenaline rush they get from "breaking in" to an area really gets her going and I'm fortunate to have a stunning view of the sky, and city if I take her up north a bit. This is kind of hr/hr though, if you get caught the penalty is you look really silly and it may ruin the mood if you're out with that kind of girl. So do some scouting with a friend or two.

My back up, if I know a girl wouldn't enjoy that is to wander around the university and go to "special spots" eg on my campus there's medieval fights (in full armor) every Thursday and it's fun to just camp out and watch.

I like the classic dinner (but choose a place with an arcade near by) then the "oh there's an arcade down this way wanna play a few games?" take her there and play a few games. Then pick a game you may or may not be good at, hype the game up like you're the best around, then lose on purpose or not depends on how good you are. It's a lot of fun even for people who don't like arcade games but then again who doesn't like a few arcade games. This part is optional but ask her if she wants to put a friendly wager on the game. I always say if she wins she gets ice cream, if i win a little kiss on the cheek. It's a Win-Win. You either get ice cream or a kiss.

A scenic state park, an interesting historic district, fishing off of a pier or dock (help her cast), ice skating, roller blading (it's okay if you bust your ass, if she's not good at these, it forces her to hold on to you), dancing (I'm not good at all at dancing, but if you to a decent bar there's incentive to hold your hand and get close), BYOB painting class, your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant (if she doesn't like your favorite place, are you truly going to be happy with her?), museum of a common interest, maybe set a price limit $25 each and either go thrifting / antique shopping and buy something for one another, or set the same limits and try one small thing from every corner store you can until you run out of money or are full, go to a local art walk, festival or market. Just some stuff I thought of.
