I don't understand the problem here . We're talking about fundraising for a charity . Actually , wouldn't virtually any charity event be non-inclusive in some way ? A charity run discriminates against the fat kids . A bake sale discriminates against the diabetic . Hell , even a poster meant to raise awareness discriminates against those with a learning disability .

Well shit ... why even bother at all ? If somebody could possibly experience even the smallest hint of emotional discomfort , it's far more important we avoid that unlikely possibility rather than address the growing lump in my body that's slowly killing me so painfully .

The headline is very misleading. This is a 13 year old kid and he's in a private school that has uniforms and such. And, as the article states, hair styles that stand out aren't tolerated.

So yeah, he was doing this "for charity" but really just wanted to grow some facial hair.

I went to an all boy's school with similar policies. It was a constant fight by the administration to make sure all the boys were compliant with the policies. One guy figured out that long side burns were allowed so he grew massive mutton chops and left just a slim cleanly shaven bit in the center to get around the policy. The dean's stance was....well if you want to look like a fool don't let me stand in your way.

Anyway, the point is I view this attempt to raise money very cynically and now that this is news the boy will probably need to raise a large amount of money through other means for this charity to prove his dedication to that cause.

This is at least a little confusing to me. The school seems to be of the mind that it will somehow be facilitating the fundraising event, where in reality Movember is collecting donations and having people fill out a form, or giving them a card to your mo space so they can donate.

Perhaps there's something unsaid here, like he was specifically raising money for only Prostate Cancer UK and that'd mean that there'd need to be a supervised, proper collection system that the school would need to administer.

That being said, stopping a kid from growing a moustache? I'm looking forward to when they start telling the kids to shave their legs because it makes them look different if they have any hair.

My solution would have been to allow the student to grow his moustache AND to sell fake mous for anyone else who wanted to participate.

Equalized opportunity would say "let anyone who wants a mou, real or fake, have one."

Equalized outcome is saying, "since not everyone can have a real mou, nobody is allowed to have one."

It is the forcing of an outcome to be equal because otherwise gender would prevent it - rather than allowing / creating an opportunity to be equal because otherwise gender would prevent it - that makes this a gender issue.

I would treat it a bit like a charity run or something; obviously not everyone can do a marathon.

But the school would see it differently because people can't train to grow a mo and can't do an easy mode thing (like one kilometre, something anybody could at least walk) and raise money that way, and I understand that.

If someone wanted to do this at my school, none of the boys would have felt "left out"... just doesn't seem like a guy thing to feel sad about, though I don't know every guy. If guys feel bad about not being able to grow facial hair by x age then it's the school's job to teach the "everybody's bodes are different and that's perfectly fine" aspect of sex ed properly.

If it's just for awareness then the only problem they are getting into is the actual verbal/written expression of said charity, which is stupid.

lame. I just don't make the connection between growing facial hair and money for charity. Why not sell fake mustaches and have proceeds go to charity? or t-shirts....or anything else. Growing a mustache is not something you can give/receive. If you're saying it's just for awareness or they are a walking billboard then you are diminishing the point of anyone else who has a mustache/beard. idk, I just find this whole thing kind of stupid.
