On the "accomplishments don't increase SMV" thread I mostly agree but I think it's not quite so cut and dry.

I know some girls from the climbing gym and someone like Alex Honnold definitely gets some SMV points with them, they think he's like the hottest dude ever.

Obviously it's not his charm (acts borderline autistic) and he has a pretty weird face - It's just his status, which is basically derived from his accomplishments in the sport.

Here's the quick way to figure out if you're average or truly ugly (for men), since many sources say people in general are poor at judging their own looks.
(Warning for long comment):

When you talk to women in a normal, are they receptive and friendly?
- If they're receptive enough, then you're average, not ugly.
Do you find that women are willing to hang with you "as friends" in public but make it clear nothing is happening?
- This means you're average. Women ain't gonna be seen in public with you if you were really an uggo
Have you or are you maxxing out your looks by lifting, grooming, etc. but still get no attention whatsoever?
- If so, then it's unfortunate, but you're probably just ugly in that case
Has a woman ever complimented your looks unsolicited but then it's a "no" when you shoot your shot?
- It is possible that you're good-looking but not sexually dimorphic (which is a pretty shitty spot to be stuck in).
- It's also possible that you're behaviorally unattractive. Or just weak, feminine, etc.
Do men always seem to find you hilarious and fun to be around, whereas women ignore you and/or never seem to find you funny?
- Tough call to make because people's humor can vary, but generally this would mean you're below average or ugly

By the way, I do know nothing here is a guarantee or bound to be constantly true, but form what I can generally gather

I mostly made this in response to all the posts in r/dating that are basically "I'm attractive, makes six figures, have my own place, and am in shape, why don't I get dates?" because I think a lot of people who think they're average are giving themselves a bit too much credit

I think it really can't be overstated how absolutely useless some intelligent guys can be when it comes to flirting.

I spent my years of university with four bachelors. This was Oxford so all very intelligent people.

Their inability to deal with the opposite sex sometimes was...

It made for fun stories.

Two of the four basically put in zero effort at uni. They obviously got nowhere. Neither was unattractive but neither talked to girls.

Then the other two who tried...

My favourite story was when one of them was on a date. His date apparently told him "oh I really like guys with blue eyes". At which point he proceeded to doubt his own eye colour (they were blue) and thought she was talking about other men. FML.

A lot of very intelligent people are very good at their subject but so unbelievably incompetent when it comes to flirting.

They all figured it out in the end and managed to get into relationships (one is now poly and even manages to date multiple women at once). But only once they got over the hurdle of how to talk to women and get out of their own heads. It took practice and a LOT of failures.

I went from a relationship i thought I'd never leave with a girl i was deeply in love with, with an ok internship and being kinda bored overall, to feeling that NRE rush and nervousness, realizing my ex wasnt shit, enjoying exploring new people physically yes but intellectually as well, with an ACTUAL job with real responsibilities, and a new boss i fucking love. I'm also going to be moving to one of the most beautiful areas in the entire country where my fund is located.

Life is crazy.

Whenever dealing with a market where there is a huge supply of variety of options you have to ask the question what makes people choose one product over the other. They may choose based on its high quality, low price or low maintenance costs or whatever.

So in context of dating apps, truly average or below guys need to realize why were they chosen over any other guy. And they have to think whether they are fine with the fact that high quality wasn't the reason they were swiped on.

My poor wife.

I recently decided to recheck my testosterone levels since I turned 50. My last test was mid 40's and it was top of the range but I saw my estrogen and sex binding hormones were high and my free was average but I didn't feel motivated to do anything. So i get the test and its still very high, so I got that going for me, but lower than it used to be.

But if you ever studied this sort of thing that also means my sex binding hormones are high and my estrogen levels are high (T gets turned to estrogen in males by aromatase and the more T the more E you get.

So my estrogen levels are high and my free T is middle of the road.

So I started taking a low dose aromatase inhibitor about a month ago.

Well its kicking in apparently, but I am not going to retest for a couple more months.

I'm getting spontaneous erections like a 18 year old virgin at his first nude beach. Its mildly annoying its like "why the hell am I hard now?" when there is nothing remotely sexual going on.

I was digging into the divorce subreddit, and reading stories about how women will just straight up lose attraction to a man, blow up their family, and ruin him emotionally. Why? Because they just arbitrarily fall out of love, and feel they "deserve to be happy". I'm talking about women straight up admitting the guy was otherwise perfect and did nothing wrong, but they themselves changed.

Elevating one's personal chase for happiness above all else in life -- over your family, your community, your spouse, your kids, etc., tends to be a pretty common trope in modern society. I say "chase" because it seems to elude most people despite their unwavering efforts to attain it.

I wonder, does that attitude manifest themself in certain cohorts of the female population more than others?

Men may have come to find young girls most attractive as a way to safeguard a succesful first pregnancy.

I suppose this is mostly relevant in a setting where reproduction occurs within a monogamous relationship. Another thing which I have been thinking about a bit. The vast majority of succesful reproduction over the last 3-4 thousand years or more, have happened within marriage. A setting where the young girls typically had very little say in whom they were married to - a decision which was often made on their behalf by their older females in their family (the men, typically older, usually had more say). What does it do to female attraction, if their reproductive success is driven by the desires of other older females on their behalf?

What do y'all think about "attraction" in the metaphysical sense?

I was just thinking about how we commonly refer to attraction as something physical, like physical features being attractive, but that's not the only sense that attraction exists in, and it's still correlated with everything else.

People who are labeled "attractive" attract things and other people into their lives, and the more "attractive" someone is, the more they bring. In that sense, it is possible to be attractive without being attractive, if that makes sense to you.

I don't want to get all "Law of Attraction"-y because that might bring out the astrologists and people who are likely to buy into MLM schemes, but there definitely is a certain.... je ne se quoi... about attraction that isn't often talked about, but it's described with other similar words like "magnetism," which is an invisible force, such as gravity.

So what do you all think about this concept of attraction? Conversation-worthy, or does it not register at all?
