Women seem to be better keepers of status quo than men are. It's why you're seeing so very few women at the fringes of society.

I think a better question is what does open-minded even mean? Is propensity to go with the flow - and thus throwing stones at fringe opinions - being open minded? Or is defining yourself against status quo more open minded?

Women have a propensity to seek out consensus first and foremost which often manifests itself as intolerance/hostility towards different ideas and opinions.

Observe the "mean girl" clique of any given middle school and beyond to see examples of how this plays out. Or just ask any of the girls who "prefer male friends" to explain why.

Men are more grounded on principles when it comes to self discipline and traditional values.

Women are more open on new aged political and socials beliefs. But for themselves will be very traditional when they want to be.

That’s why you got feminists who care about patriarchy and women who don’t believe the biological differences of men and women to the point that they defined it into obscurity and non existence.

So you can debate a man. You’ll less likely to get canceled since the traditional principal of engagement (fighting with words) still exists in the men. While for the women they’re 100% fine with use the state and appeal to authority to end a discussion all together.

Which is why if you want to keep it frank a lot of even gay dudes still think some of the newer forms of lgbt stuff (like trans and non binary) is bs. That’s why in nyc we had one of the largest gay nightclub basically ban a lot of trans and non binary folks.

I'd like to think openmindedness is one of those things that are a product of where you live, grew up and the company you keep. This is something that definitely has too much nuance to be put into two boxes you know? In my personal experience, I've been in more debates with men because that's something the men around me enjoy doing. Conversations with women seldom turned into debates unless it's my mom being a homophobe haha

Depends. When it comes to things I consider degenerate/deviant-men seem to be more open about that. Women in general are more open in terms of advocating for groups that are disadvantaged—if you look at the volunteering populations, most are women.

I would say men are more open to listening to different moralities without shouting people down. I am not a conservative at all, I dislike Trumpers and anti vaccine peeps but I also think that some of the Uber liberal individuals never sit down to listen. Instead they get hostile and start to offend. Lots more women on the liberal side.

So…do I think men I’m general are open to things I consider disgusting? Yes. Do I also think some women need to take a chill pill. Yes. Both men and women can be open in benevolent ways too—I like that many men are very interested in philosophy and understanding why humans do things, I also like that women are less likely to judge my hairy legs and that they often go a bit more with the flow instead of trying to control everything.

At the fringes, both genders are open and close minded-in different ways.

Women are more open minded towards people and things they can relate to and are sympathetic towards. If a woman cannot relate to something, nor holds a sympathy to the group of people that does relate to it, she will be 100% close minded to it. She will also be completly close minded towards any dissenting opinions or thoughts within the things she supports.

Men are less open minded towards things they like, and more open minded towards things they dislike. Men often criticize and debate over things within their own interests and things outside their interests creating skepticism within the things they can relate to, and minority opinions within the spheres they cannot relate to. This paradoxically makes their interersts overall more open minded because men create the culture required for freedom of thought and opinion.

In my experience, guys are more open-minded. I think men are generally dismissive of things that can cost a lot of money/sex opportunity or diminish the opportunity to earn money/have sex. Some people consider that kind of thing narrow-minded but it’s more pragmatism than a prejudice. That isn’t to say there is not some overlap so there is a lot of gray. I think on average, men don’t have bias against things that they don’t believe cost them money or opportunity to earn money or sex.

From my experience, I would say that women are more open-minded then men are in a societal standpoint. Women stereotypically are more nicer, friendlier and welcoming to others in places. In the enviornments I was a part of, in grade school, online, university, and grad school, it was the women that were very open minded and wanted to be friends and talk to people, but with the men, they could care less about socialization, and were not the most sociable or outgoing people ever. It's easier to befriend women than it is to befriend men at times.

Men are a bit more close minded, because men tend to be more reserved, standoffish, more about getting things done, and aren't the most sociable or outgoing people out there.

There are exceptions though of course there are open-minded men and close-minded women of course.

I would consider myself very open-minded as a man.

I agree with most of what you said.

I think men are much more likely to listen to logic and reasoning vs for women you need to include the emotional stuff.

That being said I think that nowadays people under 35 in general are incredibly close minded. There's plenty of closed minded people over 35, but the closed mindedness under 35 is insane.

I think a lot of it boils down to if you're able to listen to understand vs, can you only listen to respond.

I will say I've often been accused of being too open minded and that not every opinion is valid.

Men are more open to debate because we have been socialized to like competition more than women are. Women shut down on debate cause largely they are conflict avoidant in real life cause they fear of physical repercussions so that translates online to simply shutting down conversations without context.

Speaking in generalities men are also more open minded in ideas which is why we argue shit all the time like sports, video games, philosophy, and religion. While women are more open minded when it comes to people and fighting for different group identities which is why they are super accepting of any and every group identity at first glance.

tldr: It honestly depends on what we’re talking about.

Women pretend to be more open minded. Perfect example I watched a video the other day of a very leftist woman, the type to say body count doesn’t matter, guys should ignore a woman’s past. She was on a dating show and identifies herself as a “bi woman”… an attractive female potential who had the best personality by far was chatting it up with her. As soon as the attractive girl mentioned she’s a sex worker she got booted lol.

So what I mostly see from women anecdotally and via social media, is that there’s a type of virtue signaling going on so that no one gets shamed, but reality is if many of these women were put in Men’s shoes for the same situations, they would agree with men more often than not.

Very little debate, even online, is structured enough to be enjoyable. No requirement for sources to be provided for instance.

Lots of replicated studies show that women typically have greater objective (measured physiological response) and subjective reactions to disgusting stimuli than men do. Conventional wisdom and not super robust empirical evidence suggests women are more empathetic than men.

So relevant to many discussions here about heterosexual male-female interactions, women are more likely to be disgusted by men around them but have some empathy for those disgusting men. Men are just disgusted by a smaller # of women and couldn't care less.

I'd say women are more open minded, easily. However, men are more open to debate. I think you're conflating the two. My wife is the more open minded of the two of us, in that she's a whole lot less judgemental about other people. Her "live and let live" philosophy is more complete than my own.

However, unlike me, she has zero interest in defending her positions to anyone. Doesn't enjoy debate, wants no part of it. If she disagrees with someone, she disagrees, and isn't interested in a back and forth of ideas.

Empirically, women are more empathic on average when observing data at the population level; and, there is significant evidence of it having some biological basis, along with cultural conditioning.

I think this might lead to a greater disposition for open mindedness, but that is some what of a conjecture, not sure what the data is on that in particular.

Also, you should be careful with this information in practice, it’s not necessarily the case that all women are more empathetic, nor is the correlation significant enough where its reasonable unlikely to make a false assumption.

I don't think someone's gender makes a difference on how open minded someone can be. Maybe people of one gender tend to be more open minded than the other statistically, but it really doesn't have much to do with being a man or a woman. Individually, people can be generally closed minded about a lot of things despite telling themselves and other people about how open minded there are. Frankly, most things most people believe are going to be static in their minds until they either spend more time alive or die.

Women and men are both humans of course, and human nature includes ego and pride. No one wants to be wrong, but it's also true that people don't want to appear stubborn. Just take a look at the world of politics for a glimpse of just how disagreeable people are in general.

I think it would be best to stop "noticing" general trends of behavior associated with people of a certain gender, sexuality, race, etc. People are wildly individual and while many share the same experiences, their values and personalities, and reactions to events in their life are all going to be different. I'm sure most people would agree with me on this, but I feel the need to say it because of just how much we seem to feel like judging people on their open-mindedness based on whether they are a man or woman. You recognize such assumptions yourself in your post, so I wonder what the value is for you to think in such a way.

It's a flawed comparison because women have less time to enjoy being sexually active. When you compare lifespan enjoyment between sexes, women have more fun in teens to mid 20's, but a man can overtake her wildest teen adventures given enough time to catch up and pull ahead as he matures in terms of fun and sexual enjoyment had.

The next generation of teenage women will suddenly look to him for their wild fun lives and so on for the next generation of young men.

Open minded with regard to what, exactly? I think open-mindedness in general is pretty broad and manifests in different places.

For example, I think men are far more open minded about trying new activities or going places. There’s a little bit of a ‘fuck it, sure’ attitude to planning. Every try to get like 6 dudes to agree on at trip? It takes 10 minutes. 6 women? What a fucking nightmare. The logistics and pickiness, oh my.

I think women tend to be a bit more open minded about adapting to lifestyles of their partner and extended family - but I think you’re somewhat correct to label this as more empathy than true open mindedness.

I’m not sure men and women are appreciably different in terms of challenges to their world view. Men tend to vary between more logic/debate style or an angry response, where as women tend to be sensitive to challenges (to your comment of ‘shutting down’) but also a little more likely to yield or quickly attempt to see alternate viewpoints. I’m not convinced this is fundamentally different.

Imo Men have more of a spread where there are likely to be more highly open minded men as opposed to highly open minded women but at the same time there will also be more extremely closed off men then extremely closed off women. Women by contrast are probably more clustered toward average (of course there will be outliers). The averages for both genders are probably around the same, with men maybe being slightly higher.

I tend to think that men are rather close-minded, as it relates to male ego and their propensity for being outspoken. I thought about this today because I said that Neon Vines is revolutionizing live electronic music performance, through sheer use of talent. A lot of guys really resented this sentiment, with an entitled sense of bitterness--like they're the gatekeepers of this kind of thing, saying that there are a lot of people who do this kind of thing; I haven't seen an example where someone is doing what Neon Vines is doing. She's performing entire intricate songs on the spot using digital instruments, mixing and singing simultaneous; compared to what other people are doing, what she's doing is much, much more complex. I love Marx Rebillet, but you just can't compare what he's doing with Neon Vines, because he's only looping one instrument over another using a maximum of five tracks.

I think the fact that a woman is so talented really sets guys off, and instead of being like--yeah, nobody else does what she does. This makes live electronic music much more interesting, and more like a conventional song--they're just like, that's nothing new! Lots of people do that! (Nobody does that.)--and it's all guys. I don't think women generally act like that, and when they do I think they generally have more grace about it.

Neither because I can tell you as a horror fan that men are some of the most obnoxious fan bois about particular films or directors, I know when I'm being shouted down by a bunch of people who worship some mainstream horror film that they're likely led by some middle class white guy, whether he be a pretentious old Boomer or a nerdy Gen Xer or a hipster Millennial.

Women on the other hand can shut people down more quickly when they think it will escalate conflict. As a woman some of my most irritating interactions with other women were based in their insistence on keeping the peace when that was a terrible fucking plan.

You may find more pushback from women when discussing politics because ...let me tell you something, and you MUST understand this as a gay man...people who are marginalized and directly harmed by politics are going to be much more defensive and shut down "debate" over things that have a very serious and direct impact on their real lives. In all of my years on the Internet, I have noticed a tendency of white straight heterosexual men to take other people's problems a little too lightly to be a little too "open minded" about racism, sexism, abortion, rape, domestic violence because they have no personal skin in the game.

I think women are more open minded when there is loss of strategic advantage at stake, men are more open minded when there is loss of tactical advantage.

So imagine the issue is helping a very difficult behavioural minority say meth users with highly problematic behaviours. A woman is more likely to be persuaded to vote for a government program...it will cost taxes over many years and that is a strategic disadvantage for her gainfully employed and not meth addicted family. When I was growing up, I could talk to men about a lot of different things that were troubling me, and we'd usually deal with these things very productively.

But women...nah. It always seemed like they liked to put on a show about being tolerant. But when a person who didn't fit their mould was standing in front of them, it didn't compute the same way. I get why AskWomen needs stronger moderation due to the gender imbalance on this site but I think it's rather heavy-handed at this point. That aside, I have been lurking on AskWomen and related female subs for years now and the moderation on those types of subs is super, super strict, sometimes for seemingly no reason. Within women's spaces online and offline, there is an extreme desire to be accommodating of people's feelings that gets super damn tiring. Lots and lots of tone policing. I appreciate the kindness but it gets to be too much at times. I find AskWomenOver30 isn't as bad but it does have shades of this. The older a woman is, the more open-minded she gets IMO. I guess it comes with life experience.

It's the opposite for men. The younger the men are the meaner their spaces are. That's what I've noticed. Anything goes for the sake of shock value and humor no matter how nasty or creepy. However older male spaces do not tolerate this as much. I've lurked in AskMenOver30 and it's a pretty reasonable place, moreso than AskMen I feel

Men are more open-minded. Men are also more compassionate and less judgmental than women. But women have more empathy.

However, compassion is better than empathy.

The kindest most compassionate men are criminal lawyers and I am not kidding.

Men are more open minded one on one. I'm not open minded I'd say culturally, I'm a conservative, I believe in conservative things, but if I like someone as a person that supercedes poltics. Men are like that with friendships.

Women aside from who they fuck, and maybe don't tell their friends about are more close minded.
