I think they definitely have, there is the classic difference between Hugh Jack in his first appearance as Wolverine vs the later movies that really shows this.

Another example I remember is that around 20 years ago brad pitt in fight club was really a goal physique for many men, but today I bet many guys would think he looks 'too small'.

These days I would say the standard is probably considered something like a Chris Hemsworth, although even those are deceptive as even he doesn't look quite that amazing outside of the specific conditions to bulk out muscle, then cut fat, then dehydrate for the day of the shoot and then the right lighting and maybe some digital touchups. Not to mention all the gear they are all certainly going to be on to get to and maintain that physique at their age.

Standards have gone up for male bodies but OLD is more to blame than just gym culture in general. Tinder, Bumble and other dating apps are places where even the most painfully average woman can literally receive hundreds of suitors, matches and DM's with very little effort. It's a lot easier to state that you only date guys who are at least 6 feet tall, lean and with abs when you literally have hundreds of options to choose from, plus it allows women to thin out the abundant herd of interested men they get approaching them.

That being said, it's probably more prevalent now than before. Because Hollywood has decided to sell male beef a lot harder. The bright lighting and sharp hd digital cameras also make appearance even more important. Skin care has gone up just as much as steroids and iron.

That also being said, I think the human brain likes what it has been trained to like by millions of years of evolution, which didn't include steroids. I've always gotten great reviews from women with a physique slightly less impressive than the Hugh Jackman original wolverine no steroids no six-pack look. Just being tall and reasonably fit is plenty effective when most guys are neither, especially after age 25 or so. Look at Superman bodies over time. The better our bodybuilders, the crazier the normalization of drugged bodies became pushed in the media. The drugs became illegal AFTER the gym culture boom from Arnold. Now we have this weird dynamic that actors, Instagram people don’t want to criminalize themselves for using drugs and lying to the mostly natural demographic on how to train.

Being fit is enough for 98% of women. The other 2% are die hard gym women and want a guy that is on their level. Those 2 girls are normalized to Instagram already. Wait till they start seeing what girls do to fake their body image.

In the 1940's the avg American could be described as generally fit. Today we are increasingly moving into two groups; sedentary obese, and active fit.

This can still be seen when traveling outside of the USA. Walk the streets of France, or Brazil. There are few 'specimens' but most everyone is fit. In the USA you've got Jacked Dudes, and Fat Dudes.

They probably think that because that’s all they really see for men under 40 in ads, tv shows, billboards etc. It used to be the same for women too until the past few years. When you saw young, desirable people on tv they were usually fit. This imagery is still very pervasive for men. So unless you hang around a bunch of different kinds of men and you have taken note of their bodies/learned that not all men fit the male ideal body, you’re going to think fit and muscular is the norm.

My daughter is in puberty and comparing herself to genetic freaks who are adult females who shop in the children sections because Size 0 clothes fall off of them.

They say men cause this "impossible beauty standards" but trust me. It's 16 year old girls on instagram and snapchat driving 12 year old girls to hate their bodies and end up cutting themselves, doing drugs, or even the unthinkable. In my daughters case, we're "on top of it" but still very worried about her - because she's been brainwashed like most young ladies to have these impossible ideals and it happened right under our fucking noses.

As for men, you have two choices. Either look emaciated or hit the gym and fit into super-slim fashion designs or get jacked and have guns hanging out of t-shirt sleeves if you're not naturally skinny. In my case, I'll never be a skinny mini so I have to maintain a large, sculptured build.

But these days, I'd rather just stay single and masturbate.

I am too busy to make myself "pretty enough" for this shallow, superficial, narcissistic and ultimately miserable world. If I'm going to be miserable, I'm not going to be skinny and constantly hungry with headaches from hypoglycemia and dizzy spells in the gym.

As a guy i feel like there is just 0 interest from women in your typical non slim/muscular guy, basically dadbods. I feel like its all about your face at that point. Wheres less stereotypical women have always been considered attractive. Im talking some slight chub here, not obese.

There’s definitely an uptick in gym culture and I think younger kids are more obsessed with being fit. But at the same time, my dad and grandpa are both pretty fit, because they just had to do a lot of manual labor when they’re younger. Both of them are very traditional guys and my dad wouldn’t let a woman carry ANYTHING. So him and other traditional older men I know around me are just naturally muscular because they do physical labor regularly.

I'm fucking big. 275lbs and lean with abs. Whilst instagram has definitely warped reality, it has't exactly made things more attainable. Same way you see so many rich influencers driving luxury cars and living in city centre apartments but inflation is going through the roof and real wages have stagnated for years.

One thing I think people now do more than ever is front. They talk big game and pretend as if there standards are higher than they are. In reality, I actually think many millennials and gen-Zers are cripplingly insecure and often struggle to communicate with attractive people. You'll have people claim Chris Evans Captain America physique is "not that big" but have him walk around in a t-shirt on a spring weekend and you'll be embarrassed by how lame the vast majority of people are.

Guys also need to stop acting like being some Chad/Tyrone on Instagram is somehow sucking away all the action for most men. I wont pretend as if one doesn't have it easy if they're tall and muscular...but you will be shocked at the amount of women who discount themselves from men who look like I do due to insecurities, fear of competition or just simple preference.

My girl is a cutie with an amazing figure and ass, but on any given trip out I tend to suck away a lot of the attention. A lot of women don't have her confidence and can't deal with that.

Because of social media now, most of the men’s bodies that women see are like that. I don’t think that it’s reflective of actually reality, although perhaps a few more men do go to the gym now compared to how it used to be. Of course, if a given woman hangs out with college athletes in her spare time she’ll probably see a lot of bodies like that, but athletes looked like that when that movie was made, too.

I don’t think that the average woman’s standards are necessarily a body like that, though. Plenty of guys with good personalities who are just fit but not necessarily muscular do well.

My standard is just thin and at least 5’9..seeing as I’m 5’8 myself.

I’ve maybe had a casual fling with a ripped guy but never noticed because it’s not something I’m into or attracted to. I like my men very thin, something like 5’11-6’2 with a weight of 135-155. I’ve dated someone who was bigger than this, about 6’ and maybe 190-200 lbs although he doesn’t look fat and no one would describe him as such, he just looks normal, but for me sexually, his body was not attractive. He didn’t have rolls of fat, he just wasn’t thin.

The men I’m attracted to don’t have abs, they’re just very thin. This might be because I grew up crushing on the malnourished heroin addict rockers, and that body type…thin with tattoos, has always stuck out sexiest body type.

As I always say, and I believe a lot of women do as well, face is the single most important thing, followed by how you carry yourself. I’d work on those things before body UNLESS you are fat or fluffy. Most women won’t disqualify you for being too thin/not ripped enough, but they will if you’re fat, even if they’re chubby themselves.

I believe the women were just not phased by his body type because most men’s bodies are just normal, as was his. Abs don’t impress a lot of women. All men have to do is not be fat. I hear men say that about women and while it’s true to some extent, fat distribution is far more important. My current boyfriend, me and his ex are both 5’8, I’m about 120 lbs and she’s about 165 lbs he said. Neither of us look fat, but her fat distribution is better than mine. If I was 165 lbs, I’d look bad because my fat doesn’t go to the right places so I just have to stay super thin.

Also anecdotally, my boyfriend juiced for a short time and showed me pics of his body from back then, and I prefer his current thin body. He wasn’t by any means overly jacked, he just looked like someone normal who worked out. But that inevitably comes with some extra bulk which is unattractive.

I will say, the gym can’t hurt, unless you get to the point where your shoulders and back are getting so ripped that it causes your neck to look short. I’ve seen this time and time again on muscular guys and I find it gross. Looks like their head is sitting on their shoulders.

TLDR; it’s not because we’re only fucking shredded guys, it’s because that’s not important to most women and goes unnoticed as long as you’re naturally thin. So ya he looks like a normal guy, because when you aren’t lining them up next to each other, it just registers as “good body”.

Well I guess its because modern dudes spend 90% of their time in front of a Playstation and having abs is seen as an extreme level of fitness. When I look at pictures of my grandfather and grand grandfather, I can say men have become much fatter, because of the office jobs and everyone trying to squeeze into white collar jobs, without realising that white collar jobs take away your ability to put your muscles to good use, making you fat or a stick figure and forcing you to pay extra and go to the gym after work.

I was walking to work last summer and saw 2 dudes unloading a truck here in the UK... Since it was really sunny, both took their shirts off. Ryan Gosling with his abs is a baby compared to those 2 dudes honestly. They were both like 1% body fat with every single muscle sticking out, looked very nice even tho both looked like they wouldnt miss a chance to get wasted with a bottle of vodka. Yeah maybe they are not making as much money but they have a physique better than 80% of the people in a local gym, without even trying.

I used to go to the gym as a teenager because I liked the feeling I get when I lift and wanted to get a bit of muscle, but reality is its not very healthy and it is boring and dumb. I dont understand this while gym rat thing, its more of an upper middle class thing, paying money to get fit, when you can just get a job that involves physical work and be paid to be in the gym 40 hours a week. If you do exercixe, it has to have some meaning, if you cycle, cycle to work and back or do delivery driving in free time, if you lift - make sure someone pays you for that, kill 2 ducks at once.

I wouldnt go to gym after work, I did not work my ass off whole day to then go and pay money to do some more work. Id rather go to work and ask if I can help to move some stuff here and there or help unloading something. Every business I had to deal with had some portion of physical work involved. And even if you plan to go somewhere after work, go to the swimming pool, swimming is much better for your spine, joints etc, because you actually let your body relax while getting some nice muscles, unlike gym where you are killing your joints and spine.

This is why I understand why guys feel like they are forced to go to the gym, because gym is a futile effort to lift a piece of metal and then put it back, for someone who doesnt enjoy the process of lifting, it feels like slavery and they feel like they must do it if they want some pussy, which makes them slaves to the pussy in their eyes, which is dystopic. But in reality dudes, gym is the dumbest way to get a body, do something usefull or enjoyable that will make you buff. Mountain bike if you live close to the forest, skiing if its snowy where you live, swimming if you have any comminity swimming pools, maybe get a job thats more physical or requires some cardio, do whatever you love or whatever pays and gives you a nice physiqe. And it should be paid or enjoyable. If its not paid or enjoyable, dont do it.

Your good shape should be the result and a reflection of your lifestyle, you dont need to force it through the gym and piss against the wind. With the right lifestyle, the right look will come. Lets not be like pink colored armpit feminazi, jumping into denial and screaming about unrealistic standards, lets be real - modern men are fatter and weaker and women dont want to fuck "that". If you were a woman, you wouldnt fuck that too, so how can you blame them? Just accept that there is an issue and find a smart way to fix it with minimal effort, maximum output and having fun in the process.

It's even obvious to me when I'm not in my best shape VS when I'm training hard actually. My fiancee it's always chill about my body (she got used I think?) and she says I'm always beautiful... However, she behaves differently when I'm working out periodicaly, it even increases our sex frecuency. It's not surprising anyways, can we blame her?

However, I don't think most women are used to be around men with good physics, and neither I believe they "expect" most men to be that shredded.

Most women couldn't tell I'm "that" ripped unless I pull my shirt off tbh (at which point they turn red actually hahaha, I know not cool of me to say it but it is what it is).

My point is, of course women enjoy the view of a good masculine body, but it's not as important to them as it is for other guys.

The problem is that men can't deal with the difference in female attention a man with a good physic can attain VS a guy with an average physic gets through other means.

And yeah, there is a difference, and quite substantial indeed, but at the end, you can get anyway good results with what we could say it's a "sub-optimal" body shape but improving in other aspects.

Thing is we all want to feel desirable so guys get hooked on how women react to body shapes and forget all the other stuff.

I can't blame them really, but I don't think we should get stuck/fixiate on only one thing, it's not healthy.

Well, first of all, Ryan Gosling wasn’t particularly big or jacked. He was just in very good shape with low body fat, which is very achievable if you’re a Hollywood actor with access to trainers and nutritionists (and time of course). For scenes like this, actors may fast and dehydrate to appear more shredded and work beforehand out to pump the muscles full of blood. He certainly does not look like ‘just an average guy’ though.

If the women you are talking to think this, it’s because online dating has found it very easy to find these men. It used to be that the 100 guys or so in the city that looked like Ryan Gosling would only meet women in the neighbourhood bars they frequented. Now the entirety of single women in the city can find them online and message them.
