The thread earlier today (about rejection) reminded me of a quote that I came across recently.

The notion that the young adult male is by definition a heartless sexual predator does not bear examination. In point of fact some of the most acute cases of depression I have ever had to deal with occurred in attempting to help young men with their betrayal by a young woman in whom they had invested a great deal and who had, as the relationship developed, exploited them rather ruthlessly. - George W. Goethals (1973)

I have a 37M friend who went from happily married (or so he thought) to emotionally shredded and divorced after a miscarriage. This was about 5 years ago. Till this day he refuses to have anything to do with women. I've encouraged him to seek therapy and/or get back in the market with no success (very successful and good looking IMO).

Women, who've dated for a while, do you ever reflect on what happens to men after your break ups? Have you ever been on the reverse of this quote? What kind of man did it?

Men, are there any of you that have never experienced anything like the quote above? Also, do you think you've ever treated a woman in this way? If so, why?

Edit: I'm NOT talking about the normal heartbreak of a breakup. I'm really asking about reflection here.

Edit #2: A bit more context on my example.

Maybe some additional context is necessary. The ex wife claimed (falsely) that he and his family were abusive. Then abruptly left and remarried. She is now divorced again and reached out to him to rekindle things a year ago (he ignored it).
