I would say the reason’s for falling birthrates are access to contraception, falling infant mortality rates and the fact that children are more of a cost than a benefit in today’s world.

Children used to be an asset, they provided work for the family and took care of the parents when they got old. Today, children don’t give their parents money / work and pension exists.

I suspect that in the future, the problems of having an aging population (less working people, more tax consumers) will make society poorer which will make children a benefit again.

Alternatively, I can imagine that there could be some technological advancements that will make having children significantly less costly. For example creating children without pregancy/birth or some tools to make dealing with babies easier.

Bingo, technology is separating those who genuinely enjoy socializing from those who dont. Now within in the dont crowd if youre attractive enough dating apps are enough if you just want sex/relationships, but if you arent tinder/hinge/etc... material you shit out of luck unless a miracle happens and you bump into someone you like randomly.

I always viewed capitalism as a better system than most other systems because it's built to account for and try to leverage human flaws agains't themselves.

Basically a lot of people view capitalism as "pro" greed and I view it as the simple acknowledgement that people are greedy and we need to make a system that tries to redirects that greed in ways that are useful for society instead of pretending people aren't greedy.

Why am I talking about that? Because I think a lot of the modern systems are built with the idea of what people "should" be rather than what people actually are and that's a fixable issue.

This is primarily pushed by women who want every limitation on their behavior removed with no real concern for the consequences of that. I think some patriarchal countries fail for the opposite reason : It's the men who don't want any limitation on their behaviors.

But I think in the west, men have shown a willingness to regulate their behavior so if women could do the same things would be doing way better than they currently are.

Usually some woman will respond to that with "What do you mean exactly by women should regulate their behavior?" or something like that and my answer to that is that the first step is for women to be willing to have honest conversations about their own behavior and if you genuinely can't think of a single thing women could regulate themselves on more, you haven't made it past the first step yet.

I think you're absolutely right.

I would say that culturally people are being sold a lies about life, love, and what it means to be happy and fulfilled.

Love is often what people really desperately desire, and need to flourish. But, we're really not seeking to give love -- or at least not the kind of love that we need to be giving. Giving love is sacrificial in ways, but in giving it away, it multiplies.

Yes, it can be frustrating to tolerate people -- but in do so, you're also able to tolerate yourself more. You're able to start integrating your darker parts, and growing as a human being.

If everyone saught to give love and acceptance, everyone would be accepted and loved.

Instead we're in a society today, where we're focused on how we receive love and on what other people's flaws are. This ironically has led to a situation where love and acceptance is scarce, even though it's not a finite resource that should be constrained.

I think a lot of it comes simply from the fact that English only really has one word for love. I love tacos, and I love my wife...

I don't know about the rest of it, but at some point birth rates go up. Either it happens organically because it turns out people were responding to overpopulation signals--real or imagined--and the population hits a level where this dynamic no longer applies. Or nations will at some point do whatever is needed to get TFR up, damn the second order consequences. This might be ugly and no idea if it is 'better'. But humans don't go extinct from TFR.

Birth rates may be declining, although the world population is still expected to increase. I don't think we're any danger of running out of people anytime soon.

The world currently has over 8 billion humans. If the population was reduced to less than 10% of that, then we'd be at the same level we were in 1700. Still enough people for our species to survive.

Moreover, automation and AI are making it possible so that fewer workers are actually needed as much as in the past.

A smaller population consumes less resources.

A smaller population is more ecologically sound, especially at a time when climate change has become a serious worry.

As for the genders drifting apart, this may happen just as communities in general have been drifting apart. People don't know their neighbors anymore. There's a profound lack of trust and a lot more fear these days. It's not man vs. woman (or even black/brown vs. white), but it's human vs. human.

I don't think civilization will suffer a total collapse, as humans are adaptable and can learn to make adjustments to changing conditions. Humans are not generally inclined to let things fall apart without a fight, and that's where the adjustments come into play.

That's what most people fear, the "adjustments."

Is it the births per mother that has gone down, or the percentage of women that are mothers? Because those are two different things that can affect the same statistic.

Religious societies impose heavy pressure on people to have children, but not necessarily many children. So I suspect people are still having children, but each family is likely smaller now than they would have bee in the past. This isn't necessarily bad, as long as the births per woman is above 2.1

Lot's of things get better and certain things get worse. A history lesson is all it takes. Hundred years ago people lived lives that were very very difficult in their own ways which included tens of millions dying in wars. At some point in the future we can count on less families mourning the deaths of loved ones when we create cures for more diseases and ailments

Changes in populations have happened all throughout history. When tens of millions of Men die at war do you think everything goes back to normal the next day? Lol. Humanity survives and we figure out a fix to the issue eventually

Birth rates are declining due to the economy and in America with the laws around abortion and women dying due to being refused procedures they need, women will avoid sex and relationships, it’s not worth their lives.

With going out becoming too expensive, people are choosing to stay home and communicate over technology. The internet can be a toxic place, especially when you find yourselves in echo chambers. Then going out into the real world where someone might actually challenge your way of thinking, people increasingly don’t want that.

You’ve got an increasing amount of men becoming increasingly right wing and laws changing which is going backwards in terms of rights for everyone.

The world is a bleak place, it’s hardly a wonder that people are isolating themselves

It’s not going to get better for western women, anyway. Most western men could go to a poor foreign country today if they saved the money and find a partner. Many might be being used for their money for a certain degree, but at least it’s something. As long as there is poverty in the world, things can get at least somewhat better for western men with enough money if they really want it to. There’s certainly no need to reason to put up with western women having such high expectations that they are basically giving up on relationships. They can enjoy being alone if that’s what they like so much.

Birth rates are going to get better. Their current decrease is a part of that: Birth rates shouldn't be as high as they are. We don't need this many people. The birth rate today being lower than it was 50 years ago is a good thing (the "better" thing), because the birth rate 50 years ago was a bad thing.

People act like birth rates being low means we're going to go extinct. It's not, it just means our overall population will reduce a bit to more reasonable numbers, and then will stabilise again. We will only go extinct if there are no babies born at all for the next few decades.

Birth rates slump during times of uncertainty (look at post-Soviet states in the 1990s, for example). We’re in a time of high uncertainty and overpopulation right now. Of course birth rates are low. In the grand scheme of things that’s probably a good thing….its just awkward for people who are alive right now.

To me the problem with this mindset is that it’s an extremely self centered and selfish view on the purpose of relationships. It used to be a key part of getting into one was learning about another person, their interests, supporting them, and learning to love someone else. If an AI can replace that then you never were interested in learning about someone else a relationship to you was always about your needs being met.

I think another downside of the internet is instant gratification and so getting to know someone is not as entertaining or mind opening as it used to be.

I think people are more concerned with food and housing for themselves.

People can't afford children without 2 incomes and even then, it's still a struggle.

People, especially women, aren't interested in having children just to struggle.

Eta - make new friends or get a new boyfriend. I've never been annoyed by my friends opinions or having my husband around. If you feel annoyed by the people in your life, find new people who don't annoy you.

I agree with your post that these this is will continue to decrease( marriage, birth rates, dating)

But this is good.

The birth rate decreasing is good. The fertility rate has decreased most amongst low income groups. Which means less poor people right at the source. ( The fertility rate has increased for high income groups)

We have almost reached the point in history where society is self automated and runs machinery. Imagine the efficiency, time and labor saved.

Ai, technology, machinery are good for society they help us make more money /output with less labor. These things were the point/purpose of building a society. We need lot less people to run/sustain a society that to build it.

Even if we had a baby boom, we wouldn't be able to employ them when they grow up bc AI and machines would have their jobs. These people would likely then end up poor. Which is more detrimental to society than less relationships.

Soon the only people who get in relationships will be the people who want to/can be in them everyone else will take the convenient way and turn to AI. Which will help bridge the gap between the sexes bc there will be less animosity between them.

Women and Men wouldn't feel like they need each other to have sex with, be emotionally fulfilled by, have their kids with etc bc they will have a robot as a alternative maybe even primary choice.

Instead of horrific relationships plagued by two extremely flawed people. It would be happy people with their AI mates.

This will result in happier, wealthier more labor efficient society

Idk, reproduction is probably the biggest instinct people have.

This argument applied to feminism back in the day.

Nowadays, you can look at the arc of men and it's eerily similar to how the 40's - 70's played out among women.

The 00's had the first stay at home dads because women could work decent jobs (40's had the first women working because WW2)

Then a reactionary shift back in the '10s (50's was the epitome of trad wife era)

2030's may have men fighting to be stay at home dads like the 60's had women fighting to get out of domesticity.

And so on. Cycling up and down, each generation a reaction to the previous.

But each cycle overall with greater freedom forward and softer restriction back.
