Whenever birth rates are brought up, people often cite women's emancipation and women's education as one of the core reasons why people are having fewer kids.

Lets ignore the morality of the situation for a moment. Lets also ignore modem technology. Lets assume there is a medieval society with medieval technology. From a practical perspective aren't reduced birth rates horrible? How can a society survive if there are more old than young people? Who will even work or fight or take care of the elderly? Therefore doesn't it make sense that only patriarchal societies survived?
