There is an "Iron Gym" in my town. There was a branch strictly for women. "Iron Gym for women." It cost more than the regular one but offered classes like yoga and pilates. The regular one doesn't.

I go to the regular one. Full of bros and IG fitness babes. Everyone stick to themselves and focuses on themselves. And from what I've heard the bros don't grunt and throw things down like the ones at Max Fitness (never been so wouldn't know). I've had some guys come up and talk to me/ give me pointers but that was it. Usually everyone does their own thing and leave.

That's how a Gym is suppose to be. Mind your damn business.

I experienced this when I WORKED at a gym. Was busy racking some random guy’s weights and in front of me was a mirror. I looked in the mirror as I was standing up and lo and behold a man in his 60s is taking a picture of me as I’m bent over. Only reason I noticed he was taking a pic is because he forgot to turn his flash off. I was newly 18, working alone, and was way too scared to call him out with no one there to back me up.

I stopped going to gyms because of so much nonsense but, a few years ago, I signed up at a community gym near my previous house.

I would go in early in the morning to avoid scrotes and discovered that the gym was overtaken by....nuns! All of them over 70 (and stronger than me🤣). It was great! We would even relax in the whirlpool after and chat. I got into great shape and it was wonderful.

THIS! I went to PF yesterday and was using the hip adductor machine. I began to notice that any time I looked to the side during my rest sets, a middle aged man was watching me intently. Any time I happened to glance in that direction we would lock eyes.

I moved machines, and he conveniently moved machines as well to one that was across from me and just kept staring at me! I moved machines again, and he repeated the same process and maintained the creepy eye contact and staring. I was so freaked out that I went to the first floor to get away from him.

This scares me. Ever since gyms reopened I’ve been worried about this. Sometimes when you’re squatting you can feel the eyes glaring. It’s honestly distracting, especially when I’m trying really hard to achieve a goal/reach a new weight lifted.

99% of men who use gyms fall into one or more categories:

Creep and spy on women
Sweat all over the machines/benches and never clean them
Never re-rack their weights, leaving them for everyone else to either trip over or remove before you can use the bench

Very few men treat the people and the equipment at the gym with respect. In other words, they act the same way at the gym as they do at home. Probably another way to vet a man while dating. 🤣 Does he clean up after himself? Does he stare at other women? Is he willing to listen to advice or otherwise accept help from a woman at the gym?

When I still used the gym I went at slow times (weekdays after 8pm and weekends after 3pm) to avoid as many men as possible. Or I did group classes with mostly women (yoga, pilates, kickboxing). Now I get most of my exercise outside or using my home gym.

I gave up on going to my little apartment gym alone because of this shit. And the “stop dressing slutty” male brigade can STFU. My friend was leered at while in hijab and loose jogging clothes and said she’d never go to the gym alone again either.

An old man grabbed my elbow without permission and told me I was using a machine wrong and was going to “help” teach me...I hadn’t even started using it yet. He wasn’t even working out! He was eating a sandwich and talking on the phone when I came in.

He didn’t take me seriously when I moved away from him until my now-husband showed up; then I guess he thought, oh, she is some man’s property. 🙄 He kept questioning if my husband is my personal trainer...seems he couldn’t believe he was my BF, maybe because we’re an interracial couple...who knows? But regardless, the old creep only left me alone because of another man’s presence. Disgusting. When I left, he was slamming weights down and making a racket on the floor, which was above the manager’s office. I reported his scrotatious behavior to them because I knew they had banned another guy for inappropriately touching their staff. Yes, men actually go to the gym and try to grope the apartment staff in front of everyone, usually by asking for “hugs.”

Sometimes even female only gyms don’t stop creeps. I was taking a women’s self defense class and a homeless man went up to the window and started touching himself while we were stretching. Watching us. I’m not sure I was the only one that noticed but I let some employees at the shopping center know after I was finished with class.

I thought I was in a safe space because the class was all women but creeps will still try to invade our spaces.

I used to also go to a local gym that had a small women’s workout area, thats one of the reasons why I joined. But when men would workout in the area no one said anything and the rules weren’t enforced. Sometimes I’d see them staring at women while they did their squats. Men ignored the signs that said women only.

It didn’t matter that the gym was huge, had tons of equipment and was 2 stories with tons of male dominated space and better equipment. Men still felt the need to be in the small room just for women.

There was also a time when I was at that gym and was about to get dressed in the locker room. The women’s locker room. I overheard a man talking to his female friend. A man was literally in the women’s locker room like it was nothing.

I tried the gym a few times. Stares, random guys mansplaining how I have to do my workout and hitting on me and asking for my number when I was clearly only minding my own business are just some of the things that happened.

Plus I was harassed on the way TO the gym various times when I wore leggings.

I joined an all-female gym during my time at university and LOVED it. I’d never been so dedicated to working out and I managed to run a 5k from being a couch potato! I was surprised at what I could achieve without the feeling of being self-conscious. Unfortunately I moved from the area and there are no all-female gyms near my home, and I haven’t worked out that much since :(

We have to make it a habit to confront these assholes. We should post their pictures with their faces and our insta convos with them and their disgusting comments from social media with their names. We should act as if we record them and yell and shout with all of our voice at them when they catcall us on a safe, busy street (but as always, safety first, never confront if it seems in any way unsafe). I love the gym, I love the health benefits regular weightlifting gives me, I am built for that type of exercise. It would be nice if there was a women's only weightlifting room available. It's tiresome to have to keep asking gym staff to instruct scrotes not to walk past my behind while I am doing straight leg deadlifts. Their casual, "pretend they're not aware they're doing it" harassment ruins everything.

The gym i go to has a women's only section. That being said, 1. They have no way to actually enforce that and 2. It's literally a qaurter of the size of the men's weight lifting section. There's a squat machine, that machine were you spread your legs to push the weight, and one weight rack that stops at 15.

I need to find a new gym.
