Overall I think he has been important in bringing some issues to the mainstream. Videos of him get tons of views.

But, personally I think some guys go overboard and kind of worship his every word and opinion. Can’t really blame them though because a lot of guys are desperate for that sort of figure these days.

At the end of the day though, you should never care about what a feminist considers a “red flag.” It’s like asking a vegan how he prefers his steak.

Haven't watched him that much, but the few times I checked him out I saw he was fairly intelligent and well spoken and can make some solid points, but frequently I found his conclusions very flawed. I'm not sure if he's allowing his personal biases influence his views or if he's just not great at exploring alternative views with an open mind as he seems to frequently miss-represent opposing views which makes his points seem better than they are.

As far as how listening to him is a red flag I'd argue that blindly listening (and believing) ANY source is a red flag. People living inside of an echo chamber is never a good thing for mental maturity.

He's a traditionalist, as others have said just one of many viewpoints that should be considered/understood to form a sensible world view but, as with any viewpoint, it should not become ones entire world, as some have unfortunately made it.

As a traditionalist Peterson isn't a friend to the MRM, this isn't an enemy of my enemy type of fight, Feminism dehumanises men through hate, traditionalism does it through apathy. The traditionalist perspective helps put men in the straight jacket of enforced stoicism (nothing wrong with stoicism so long as it is your choice, not so great if it's all you're allowed) and under the yoke of the provider/protector.

I can understand why men were feminists up to the second wave. As soon as we got to the third and fourth wave I can no longer comprehend it. JP is not anti-feminist, I've not seen him say one unkind word about feminism.
JP has said unkind words about the MRM and incels, although he later retracted them.
That being said feminists hate him because they think he is an MRA and they can't beat him in an argument.
I think he has a lot of good things to say, it's worth a listen.
Over time he has become more aligned with the MRM, but not by design or intent, they keep forcing him to argue what are essentially issues of the MRM.

I think what he says about veganism and christianity are both ridiculous, but the majority of what he talks about is stuff backed up by research and he wants to help people. Especially people that feel disenfranchised, which are the people that need to be addressed for the type of help he offers.

Feminism is an ideology, and like pretty much all ideologies it needs some sort of enemy. In the case of feminism it is either men or people that advocate for men. Just look at all the stuff they have done against the average men's rights advocate when we are not at all opposed to women's rights but are advocating for human rights for men. I think it's a major red flag when someone is listening to someone specifically to reinforce beliefs they already have.

I like him.

I'm a psychologist and first came across him via his academic lectures. I rewatch them regularly. I feel sometimes though, he speaks as if he's speaking to an academic audience, which I think has been the source of a couple of his controversies. It makes him easy to misinterpret, accidentally and deliberately. Most people I know who call themselves feminists don't like him. But when pushed it's usually clear they know nothing about him, and instead all their info is second or third hand. Basically they believe the image he's portrayed as, which I don't think is him.

I disagree with a lot of what he says. But even then, I believe he's well read on most of what he discusses. I do wish he'd get off twitter. He keeps making a tit of himself. And occasionally when asked a question he doesn't know the answer to, he could really do a better job of saying 'i don't know'. A great example of this is when he was asked about ADHD, it was clear he wasn't as well read on that as on other topics.

In terms of what he means for men I think he's been incredible. There are those who have become idealogues of Peterson, and that's not good, but I feel most of these also misinterpret him. His messages aren't directed just at men, but imo certainly are of benefit to men. And he's brought attention to societal issues faced by men in interviews and on his podcast. Admittedly he's not that original. Most of what he says you can get from reading Frankl, Ellis, and obviously Nietzsche. But most people don't read them.

There's several things you can't say about him. You can't say he's not intelligent, or articulate. You can't say he's not comfortable showing emotion. You can't say he's not academically accomplished.

Previously, you couldn't say he was motivated by contempt. Recently it seems on twitter that he may be, although his podcasts seem to suggest not.

When he first arrived on the scene everyone said he was alt right. I disagreed. To me he seemed left wing. But what the left was maybe 10 years ago. Though admittedly he does seem to be getting more conservative. Perhaps as a result of what he's been through, I don't know.

Ultimately though, there's no shortage of men, and women, who express how Peterson's teachings have helped them through some of the darkest times in their life. He was the first person I seen in mainstream media advocating for men. I don't always agree with him, but I respect and am grateful for him. He's certainly helped me a lot.

His “just do it” attitude helped lift me out of a bad situation in my life, but I don’t like his “life is suffering, just get used to suffering because that’s all that life is.” I think that’s kinda a sad take, but I think the fact that he’s a male authority figure is what attracts so many young men to his videos, he gives good life advice and has morals

That's 100% fine, Reddit is not the end all for the opinion of women and you should take any feminist subreddit at facevalue, from what I've seen most of them are incredibly bitter, and bias, almost resentful towards men. So ultimately they have nothing of value when it comes to contributing an opinion about them.

Jordan Peterson listens to the problems of young men who feel lost a resented. He offers valuable advice to them to help them find value and meaning in their life.

He never *originally* had anything to say about feminism or the feminist movement until a handful of women asked why he never had any positive advice to give to women. He did but women didn't really *need* his advice because they're plenty of other resources for young women to find meaning and value. The men stayed because they're hardly any other avenues to go. Men were primarily his audience because of supply and demand that was pretty much it

Eventually it snowballed from there people started calling him a misogynist and he just ran with completely reasonable opinions on feminism and equality and got villainized.

I disagree with his takes on religion but overall find his content positive. His take on forcing pronoun use by law is very nuanced, and he shreds a whiny feminist named Cathy Newman in one of his most famous interviews.

I also think his views around self accountability should be more mainstream as this is a value people lack today.

Not sure I think he explains it in the most accessible way, but he does a good job of getting into the biologically based, natural hierarchies that occur between people. Acknowledging that these exist in a natural state rather than trying to pretend that everyone is equally competent and equally motivated to be a doctor is practical and honest.

Generally I find him to be thought provoking, though his religious views I am at odds with as an atheist.

His stuff about finding meaning in life and about psychology is valuable and interesting.

His political stuff is horseshit to be honest. He uses a lot of concepts such as postmodernism and marxism where they don't make sense. You can say that there is bias and indoctrination within the education system without having to use these words inappropriately.

Also if someone thinks its a red flag to listen to a certain person then that person is closed minded and that would be a red flag to me regardless of what I think about Peterson.

Listen to both sides with an attention to facts. Jordan Peterson makes a lot of sense with what he says. A lot of people disagree with him because it “feels good” to hate and destroy others.

When a person states facts, find the original source. Make sure the facts were quoted right, then weigh the issue with life experience and your understanding.

The more knowledge and experience you have, the easier it is to recognize the truth when you hear it. If either side calls names, it shows a low level of intellectual maturity, but doesn’t always mean they are wrong.

It is common for people to shout down their opponents because they cannot debate the issues. Feminism attracts all types of people, just like MRA. The biggest red flag is when someone demands you don’t listen, read, study both sides. This is a sign that they know the truth will damage their cause.

To me, he is about building up men to stand up for themselves. Some find him offensive because he calls out those that devalue, demoralize, and demean men and manhood.

I find it interesting that those against Peterson would usually say that those hooked on drugs and are suicidal are victims of conditions of their livelihoods, but do not apply such conditions to Peterson's life at all.

The comedy about it all is that he's politely Canadian about it. The accent slips out of him all the time.

I love this sub and what the movement is about, but Jordan Peterson is overhyped. I’ve tried to understand why people love him so much by listening to a lot of different podcasts and guest appearances, what I found was a man who doesn’t have much to say, so he likes to say simple things we all know using words that make him sound like a deep thinker. I love his work but am hesitant about following his advice too much. None of the 12 rules for living involve getting hooked on Xanax. I've heard him talk about this issue in interviews and I still feel he isn't taking responsibility for his addiction and what he did. He was saying (with a straight face) that he had no idea that he could get addicted and that the effects of coming off of it were not known at the time- this is just not true.
I spent 18 years of my life on and off drugs, in and out of rehab. So i know what's true and what's not on this subject and i definitely know enough to know that he is BSing.

I don't have issue with him being a drug addict and a motivational speaker but I have a hard time believing that someone should be lecturing young men how to live their lives when he himself has clearly not worked out his issues.

I used to be his biggest fan. I came across his channel when the first video of the trans pronouns fuss came out. I spent countless hours listening to all his lectures, often the same subject from different years, I listened to his biblical series, I bought 12 rules for life when it came out, etc. I was really interested in the variety of topics he connects in his talks, drawing from religion, psychology, art, History, mythology, etc. According to his own big five personality test I'm in the 95th or so percentile for trait openness. So I'm very interested in ideas and all. The political stuff was never as appealing to me as the rest of the stuff, altho at the time I kind of went down the anti-sjw pipeline for a while.

That being said, the man is an absolute ignorant, extremely arrogant in how he talks about any subject with a ridiculous level of confidence even when he knows nothing about it and he's a right wing grifter. He should shut up about politics, climate science, economics, History and so on and focus on psychology, which is the thing he's educated in. He talked at length about communism apparently never having read any communist literature, he had the gall to organize a debate about Marxism and all the preparation he did was reading a pamphlet by Marx, he's a climate change denier (with a bit of a twist, to appear more sophisticated, calling it optimism) and gave a platform to several climate change deniers, his "cultural marxism" conspiracy theory is a blatant rebranding of the nazi conspiracy theory of cultural bolshevism, his "logic and facts" bullshit is based on strawmen, straight up lies and word salads to appear profound, he aligned himself with the rest of the oil funded right wing grifters, etc. He's a total fraud, he's on an absurd level of fearmongering, he's clearly a very emotionally unstable person and at this point he's just pandering to his right wing worshipers.

If you enjoy his lectures, fine. He's more of a popularizer of Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky, Jung, Freud, Piaget, Panksepp, etc. (Unfortunately Solzhenitsyn too). The psychological approach to the understanding of mythology, religion, literature, etc, can be very interesting and it should be taken with a few grains of salt. That opened up a new understanding of religion for me, that's not just based on who's right about historical facts and I find it interesting. He's been criticized for trying to complicate and blow out of proportion what are very simple and common sensical advice. His self-help stuff is a very contorted way of basically saying "get your shit together". I have no problem with this tho. If that's the way it resonates with people, so be it. Someone may not listen if you tell them to make their bed, but if you tell them that's akin to slaying a dragon they may do it, it turns out... Fine by me. But he goes too far with it, basically telling people to treat all of their issues as personal matters, often pretending systemic issues don't exist or that systemic issues don't require systemic solutions. You are not going to fix the world by making your bed. So take his self help if you like it, knowing its limitations, and take his pop psychology stuff as an introduction to the authors he likes. But know he's unlikely to know anything about any other subject he rambles about with full confidence, getting touched by the depth of his own words and all that crap...

TLDR: I went from loving him to pretty much despising him altho I still find some of his psychology stuff interesting. But his impact is more political than anything else and his politics are an uninformed pile of grifter bullshit.

With what he is known for: He's books are very important introductory step to things like stoicism. He also brings up a lot of good topics in a way that most people can accept and follow, which improves their lives.

He's lectures on psychology and religion show an amazing perspective on the topic.

Downsides: he is very introductory which leaves people in a state where they know enough to think highly of themselves, but in actuality they don't know enough to discerning, hence open to manipulation. Its a general problem of all education to the point that it isn't always addressed even at PhD level, and levels below are extremely susceptible to it.

He doesn't address some key issues, for example that one must re-examine the things that one is fond of in order to check if they have become toxic, and get rid of them if they are.

I was first required to read Jordan Peterson at University. Before this point, as someone who considers myself a feminist, I had a preconceived notion that he was a right wing misogynist. But having now read some of his work, I can say that I was wrong, I don’t think he necessarily holds misogynistic or fundamentally sexist views. However, he is quite literally one of the worst writers I have ever encountered. He pretends to engage in logic and reason, but in reality he is just rambling, attempting to make points that he fails to adequately support with further consideration let alone anything resembling evidence. I do not take ardent issue with Peterson’s beliefs or arguments, while I disagree with many, I don’t think they are abhorrent or wrong, just a different and valid opinion. I do take issue with his absolute inability to convey a point in any meaningful way. He is also one of the smuggest people I have ever seen, he honestly thinks he is infallible and that everyone else is delusional if they disagree.
