Obviously someone who is a good partner could find another partner besides me. I hope he loves me and enjoys being with me, and stays with me because of that, I have no desire for a man to be with me if he doesn’t actually want to be and just thinks he can’t do any better but he doesn’t want to be alone or something. I’ve never really felt any competition though, when I’m dating a guy he’s been really into me and not focusing on other women or making me “compete”, or I wouldn’t be with him.

Anyone can leave you whether they have other options or not. They can fall out of love, get concussion and get their personality changed, decide to become a monk or whatnot. In the worst case scenario they also can get ill and die. Realizing relationships aren't immutable and you always have risks to get cheated on/hurt/left is a part of the deal.

A relationship can end at anytime, either because someone chose to end it or because of outside circumstances. Anyone who pretends otherwise are people that act like they're "safe" in their relationship, and that's personally why I think a lot of relationships fail. After the honeymoon phase no more effort is put in and it falls apart. I think this especially happens in marriage because marriage is seen as the "end goal" of every romantic relationship.

That's why I believe love is a choice, rather than feeling. To build something that's gonna last long term requires work and maintenance. It shouldn't feel like work all the time, because you're supposed to enjoy being with them.

I think dating someone who's "underqualified" so they won't leave you is a cowardly and desperate move, one that'll probably only breed resentment because they aren't actually someone who you want to be with.

My gf is really attractive, smart and has a lot to offer (high value woman? Lol). So I thought it was strange seeing the men she’s been with. She’s out of their league in so many ways. She admitted she dated unattractive and less hardworking men in the past because she didn’t feel worried anyone else would want them and she needs a lot of attention. She said she will look for things about them that she can find attractive and it works out. Im way more attractive than anyone she’s ever been with. When we were getting to know one another, she said she never thought id like her or that things would work out because im so different from her ex’s. And I will say that she really struggled with jealousy badly when we first got together. Like fought everyone away from me, was really controlling and said I made her feel bad about herself since “more people like me than her.” It showed me why she dated guys like that. She’s used to being the “better partner” and the catch, to having all the money and attention and not worrying about the person being able to leave. She still is having a hard time with girls liking me, or worried someone better looking will come along and I’ll leave her for them…but why the fuck would I do that? Not to mention, despite those guys not being “at her level” some of them still cheated. Ive been with other women who cheated on me despite all I have. Who went behind my back and at the end of the day, didn’t give a fuck how desirable I was. And ive definitely never left a woman for another one unless I was already leaving her anyway and it was something separate from looks or whatever else.

That being said, it depends on the woman. Idk that im Mr. high value, but im attractive, have money, im established and emotionally available. Im definitely a catch, no doubt. But so are the girls ive been with or i wouldnt be with them. Honestly, do guys who chase the idea of being high value understand that its not the key to having a successful committed marriage or relationship? That women can still cheat, too, and they can leave, too. They can lose interest for someone else just like he can? Its not like he has his pick of the litter and she does not. I have enough security emotionally with her that im not scared of it happening, but the moment I stop being so loving, caring, and good to her, I let that become a possibility. It should be enough for a woman to just love you and then be the same as she’s always been…why would the man even want to leave for someone else “better” when she’s the one he loves? Its not like when you “become high value” you suddenly are always better off than your partner or always have more options. You’re not the king of the world and above her at all. And even if you were “above her” in a social and financial sense, she can still go, too. She’ll probably feel that from you, that you feel you have so many options and she’s just another one and not the main focus of your life. That will definitely affect how she treats you or if she even sticks around. No one wants to feel “below” or secondary with their partner.

To answer your question: yes, at the beginning of my relationship, I did think that my boyfriend could find someone who has done the therapy and work to be where he is mentally/emotionally. But that insecurity has passed because I’ve completely convinced that man loves me. More than I thought I was capable of being loved. But I will always be aware that I could lose him in some way or another: whether it’s to another woman, man, death, etc. and so I will just enjoy the present moment I have with him

This is exactly why you consistently find a certain type of person dominating forums like this — insecure, risk averse, black and white thinkers unable to cope with anything that doesn’t provide guarantees in life, paranoid about being played. That type of personality is always going to struggle with dating, because human relationships are not a math problem or a business endeavor with a calculable risk.

So anyone who successfully dates is aware that their partner isn’t bound to them for life. If you chose to make a LT commitment to someone, you do your best to nurture the relationship but you also accept that nothing is ever guaranteed. And if you can’t handle that, you probably should just opt out because you’re never going to be able to be happy.

I just try to be a good human. I don’t focus on just trying to be the most physically attractive or what I can do for him. I try to be as good natured and loving with pure intentions that I can. A lot of people lack humanity and pure intentions now and people don’t get to feel that from others very often. Anyone can leave at any point for someone better suited to them and for a multitude of reasons. Knowing this and having them still want to go on a date with me, spend time with me shows they are making a choice that day to meet up with me alone. I don't take it for granted, and I don't assume they'll be there tomorrow.

I won't date "underqualified" guys, assuming you mean underqualified as in someone I'm not attracted to. I date whomever I'm into, it would be a disservice to lie and date someone I don't like just to get laid or whatever.

Though sometimes someone's appeal can change. Someone I'm initially attracted to can dive from a '10' to a zero if they become controlling, if they are mean to people (friends, neighbors, homeless people, kids, servers at a restaurant).

Similarly they might decide not to go on additional dates with me.

There is a difference, in my mind, between the "best" and the "most compatible." A lot of people seem to aim for the hottest person who'll tolerate them, and think that's winning. Then they'll be baffled when they end up alone.

For me the most important criteria for an LTR is "would I still want to spend the majority of my life with you if we weren't fucking?" The "best" partner for me is someone who I can have the same level of comfort with as I would a close friend, and they can have that with me.

So no, I don't think about my man leaving me, because I took the time to select someone I could form a healthy, secure attachment to. Obviously it might still happen but I've done everything I can to mitigate risk factors.

I won't lie, I date men I'm very physically into but who may not recognize their own worth. It helps that I'm into more feminine men, because they tend to get a lot of messaging that they need to "man" up.

My partner is the most attractive I've ever had, but he has some sort of complex from childhood because he was chubby/short before hitting a major growth spurt. He's tall and healthy looking, and on the slimmer side. He has good bone structure (which is what I look at regardless of body type...if you don't have a solid foundation, it doesn't matter what's on top...it will still look "meh" at best).

He doesn't seem to recognize how conventionally attractive he is because of how people treated him during childhood, and because OLD apparently did a number on his self esteem. I work to boost his confidence and encourage him to see his worth, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find some comfort in the fact he seems to doubt himself.

Ideally, he becomes more confident and secure and I help him achieve that. If he leaves me because he thinks he can do better, so be it. It'd be an honor to know I helped someone I love. That's a risk I accept.

But a hint of self doubt is "attractive", at times. I know that may sound "toxic", but it does help me feel more secure. Either way, I've never had any real issues in the dating pool so I know I'd be able to find someone else if I had/chose to. But I don't want to. I want him. He's my choice.

I don’t know why anyone dates me. High/low/tall/short/whatever/whatever, I don’t know why men date me when it’s obvious they don’t actually want me.

I know my SO should leave. I’ve seen his exes who all look the same (the opposite of me). I’ve seen what kind of girls he looks at, and who he hangs out with online, and how often women with a lot more going for them are obsessed with him.

I didn’t want to be with him in the first place. Or anyone. I decided in my early 20s that dating men was a waste of time for someone like me. I didn’t know what that meant (still don’t) but I was confident men did.

I struck out way more than my friends no matter how much they tried to help me get the guys I was crushing on. I could be the hottest girl there, didn’t matter. It could be a whole party or an entire school full of people. Didn’t matter.

My first crush, after months of hanging out told me that he was waiting for his 40 year old neighbour to notice him. He thought they had a connection. He hung out with me because he knew other girls wouldn’t bother if they saw us together.

My second crush only befriended me because I looked Portuguese enough to help him lie to his parents about who he was dating so he could sneak out with his white girlfriend.

My third, he did ask me out but I thought he was joking because he was one of the hottest guys in school and my brothers friend. And when he asked me out everyone started laughing and going on about why would anyone actually like me. So I ran away fast and went home to cry and started wearing massive clothes so I got the reputation of a lesbian. But girls wouldn’t date me either lol.

I spent an entire summer at the lake with a guy who was so hot he gave me a fever, but he barely spoke to me or spoke at all.

Tragedy after tragedy in my teen years taught me pretty early that I’m not allowed to talk to men and if one of them manages to be with me I should just ignore him until he leaves. If I ever develop feelings, it’s over.

I’m cursed.

I’ve been with the same person for 14 years and I’m still trying to ignore the existence of the relationship because I know he’s hasta the minute I show my true feelings. I won’t even look at other men in public. He thinks it’s because I love him so much I guess. It’s because I’m terrified.

No. I never date men who I view are underqualified. I expect every man I date to have decent personality and loyal (i will never date someone who has cheated in the past or even have close friends with cheaters) and a good career unless they have a good excuse why they do not. (Ie. Impactful/meaningful work is fine with me. Work they are super passionate about is a maybe for me.)

I don’t care about looks as much - dated a guy who I’d say was a solid 10 in looks department (still physically the hottest guy I have ever met) and someone who would be classified as a 3 initially. But i had no issues being insanely attracted to the 3 after i fell in love.

Just because someone is less attractive in no way means they won't cheat or leave you too. To some extent I think they're more inclined because they want that validation they didn't often get in life.

You can definitely apply this analogy to dating. But not marriage and kids. Once kids are in the picture, you literally become each other’s best possible options by a mile (assuming your core values still match). If both partners throw themselves back into the dating pool after marriage and kids, their dating market values drop like a rock. So neither of them is getting “someone better” - they are getting someone else with their own baggage or someone willing to take on someone else’s baggage.

No, because that's not how love works. Yes you get together at first because of various qualities and attributes, but over time, familiar love creates a really strong bond beyond what they can do for you. I trust in the people around me, especially the people I know that love me, to do right by me.

I know they wouldn't want to see me in pain. And of course, if being with me is actually making their life miserable and unhappy, I would prefer if they move on as well. Because I don't want to see them miserable and kept away from their true happiness either. I'm willing to accept that may happen, but given my life experience, I don't think that's super likely because familiar love can be so strong.

No matter who is more conventional attractive any person can leave a relationship at any point. I mean it’s not uncommon for men to cheat with women that others would say isn’t as attractive because they want a certain kink or whatever. So I never dated based on this, I mean I was kinky horny bitch for a guy I dated in high school who I was pretty well matched with, cheated on me with a guy friend cause they were drunk. In life there are very few guarantees.

I don’t think women are as concerned about that. I mean no one wants to be dumped it’s somewhat far removed when you first start dating someone you can’t be thinking “what if he dumbs me later” in the beginning. Though I have heard some women say they avoid certain types of men because of that like entertainers and stuff. I myself don’t think I could date a pro athlete or famous musician

Yes, went in full awareness for someone out of my league, it ended predictably with him finding someone better. I don't regret it though, at least there were some very good times we had, and I got children out of it.
