Men who are into incel shit or who are depressed/unstable tend to believe they’re hideously ugly when they’re really just somewhat below average or average but lacking a sense of style. These guys are overrepresented on Reddit. Most men, however, do overestimate their looks and believe they’re like a 7 when they’re like a 5. Remember that most people are in the 4-6 range. It’s much less likely someone is really a 3 or 7. And that’s why personality matters… not because women care more about it, but because the vast majority of y’all are dead average.

The tests for the study you mentioned involved participants self-rating their attractiveness and then judging the attractiveness of people in person, face-to-face instead of photographs. In other words, their judgements now would be influenced by more than just physical attraction.

The study admits it was trying to explore findings that would support a 75 year old study, but didn't use appropriate comparative settings or setup.

When women are forced to pick, like when asked, or when they do online dating, women do lists and try selecting in a very infantile process where they create everything and the kitchen sink lists, dream of the wealty italian gentleman that for some reason loves and dedicates his life to the pirate tongued fat slut from the suburbs. It's purely aspirational and a imaginative process, they are not thinking of real world people. At most, if they were to be very grounded in reality, those aspirational processes are still in play and they default to popularity and looks of all the men in the room. At no point in the process of answering the question "what man do I want?" will she thing - but does he want me. Because the question is about wants, not what she can get - it's by default operating from a interior subjective perspective - because getting with a man is about accepting what comes not about proactively chasing and proving themselves. Again - women are not men, when I see red pillers frame the question like that and then playing the gotcha game - it's embarasing.
This "women are the selectors of mates" narrative makes women think they are capable of picking of a menu men and they end up going for the same man like every other woman, while the reality is - if she spent time with all the men she already knows, she would find attractive qualities in most of them, and they would be better partners than the literal prom king. And this point is for women, you're embarrassing yourself, You know your pussy pulses based on what the man does, not based on what you decide you want or is good for you. Men are way more picky and critical with looks than women. It also doesnt matter how attractive the man himself is, below average men are also incredibly critical of womens looks. There are outliers but they are outliers.
