I haven't watched The Matrix, but for the other two this reads like you didn't watch the movies. The plot of Spiderman would've been the same if Peter and MJ were close friends as we can see by him moving the exact same amount of "heaven and earth" for Ned, and the two were close after having known each other for several years. They were already together in the movie but there wasn't any "chasing" in Far From Home either. MJ was the one risking her life essentially just for Peter which she didn't have to do. James risked his life for both his girlfriend (I can't remember her name, sorry) and child but the main point was the broader impact of the villain's actions. He hadn't "just met" his girlfriend, they literally had a child together who she had made a lot of sacrifices to raise and she also risked a lot to protect him and their child. She was trying to win James back the entire movie, how you thought it was the other way around I have no idea.The women in these movies are doing more just for the men than the men, who are more focused on saving the entire world than saving those women in particular.

I've always wondered why people say that the media sends this message that the nerdy loser kid can get the hot girl if he tries hard enough. In just about every fantasy movie I've seen (especially from Disney) it's the prince, handsome badboy or extremely talented "chosen one" that gets the girl. I can think of maybe one cartoon from my youth where there was an exception (Kim Possible), but that's ONE out of countless others.

A good bit of Hollywood, both modern and classic presents this ideal in both men and women. Though for reasons, many people overlook. Writers and storytellers often use unrequited love stories, because it often is easier to build a sense of mystery to a potential relationship. It is a story that can easily happen over an hour to 600 episodes.

Also, a man doing grand gesture for romance, heroic, adventure, comedy (unintentional - intended comedy) or surviving a tragedy or horror is a standard part of the film. It's a standard part of what the protagonist does, with or without a romantic interest. Of course, you won't find alot of female protagonist who sacrifice themselves or make grand gesture for a male character who is not interested in them...in these type of films. Even, with progress, these type of films with female protagonists are still a relative minority in spectacle, set piece...action films or escapism fantasy. In fact, most leads are still primarily men. It's almost like asking a kid to do algebra, when they aren't at multiplication, yet.

Most of that goes back directors and producers who often don't see that aspect from the perspective of girls and women. Oftentimes, if it's not geared towards women or has a slight romantic lead into the story, the love interest or spouse/partner is simply a role, not a character.

As you can admit many of these type of films from the 20s to 2020s -- did not have a romantic love interest or did not need one. Because, it doesn't further the story. James Bond--- Which one? No Time to Die, Spectre, Skyfall, Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale, The World is Not Enough, Golden Eye, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, or...Spiderman -- No Way Home.

Yes, it does exist with female characters --

Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- Willow/Xander

Dr. Who -- Martha Jones/The Doctor

Smallville -- Chloe/Clark Kent

Camp Lazlo -- Patsy/Lazlo

Danny Phantom -- Sam/Danny Phantom

Family Guy -- Whatever Meg does no one loves her.

Gravity Falls - Mabel, see Meg from Family Guy.

The Wuzzles -- Hoppo/Bumblelion

It’s simple mathematics. In Western countries women are the biggest consumers or content and goods. So companies make content that’s marketed to make women feel good. The whole tradition of going to the movies is largely seen as something a guy takes a girl to. So of course the movies they make are going to have a plot that is favorable towards women. The movie that does the opposite isn’t going to sell because no guy is going to take a girl to that movie.

Yet you don’t mention how these usually have ultra-attractive women. To be as attractive as an actress, most women nowadays bend over backwards and spend an excruciating amount of time, money and effort (if you’re not born into a rich family) to keep up with the hollywood physical preferences. Men’s standards about women are inflated by media, but what they don’t realize is that the acresses on screen get paid to work out and be pretty, while most of us mortal women have to PAY in endless hours of shaving/plucking/blowdrying/raping your body with exercise and diets, and expensive makeup products, all while holding a job and a social life, just to even be close to these ideals. And often with no more reward than self-confidence because the guy we end up dating/in a relationship with does not really match that energy. Plus, the women on screen are portrayed as always being emotional and having little agency, which is unfair because everyday women cannot afford such luxuries. So I don’t think it’s an unbalanced/unequal trade of effort.

I think superhero movies is a bad example as people just don’t find themselves in those situations to be able to relate to them. Now if you said we had an overabundance of films that show men doing all the chores around the house, dragging home giant teddybears and boxes of chocolate, and staging long love-making sessions in an ocean of rose petals - then I would agree that they’re being portrayed as bending over backwards 😂😂

Most mainstream movies are “aspirational” and are cynically tailored to fit whatever demographic happens to be their target audience.

If the audience is predominantly teenage boys then the female love interest is likely to look like a fashion model whereas the male lead is comparatively “Everyman”.

If the target audience is female divorces in their 40’s it’s the same principle-only their love interest not only happens to be a a step above the female lead in the looks department but also a multimillion which a desperate desire to bring up her kids.

Hollywood- and any “aspirational” media- has always been an influencing factor in conditioning unrealistic “romantic” expectations in BOTH sexes.

However the daily accessibly of porn( for men) and social media( for Woman) since the advent of the internet means we are now living in a culture where “relationships” expectations on both sides have never been as unrealistic and entitled.

I think the impact of movies on the development of people's minds, and their understanding of the world is heavily underrated. Think of the hours and hours of movies and tv shows you watched in your formative years, when your mind was a blank canvas, and you knew very little of the world. That should have a tremendous influence on your understanding. Hollywood paints a very false picture of the world and it can take some people years to be 'deprogrammed'.

Your argument ignored that all of these films are sequels, where the female character already has very well established feelings for the lead. MJ is implied to have a crush on Peter Parker all the way back in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The entirety of the first Matrix film surrounds Trinity’s feelings for Neo. Her love for Neo is proof that he is “The One” because that’s what The Oracle told her. When it comes to character development, franchise films with multiple sequels can’t be plucked away and used for this argument.

There’s better films out there to “prove” your point, even though I don’t agree with you. The villain in Shang-Chi is motivated by his love for his dead wife and is willing to destroy worlds at the chance to get her back. The entirety of the Amy Pond/Rory Williams relationship is written like this in the 5th and 6th seasons of Doctor Who. But in a counterpoint to your argument, River Song sacrifices herself for the 10th Doctor in season 4 of Doctor Who, and because of time travel shenanigans, he hasn’t met her yet, while she’s in love with him.

Harley Quinn prior to her rewrite over the last decade was a female version of what you describe.

Why don’t we see this plot done with female characters more often? Well, most movies have male leads, especially fantasy, action and scifi. This is a pretty genre-specific trope. You don’t see a lot of world cataclysmic events in grounded dramas and romantic comedies.

I agree, with the addition that I believe this is a narrative trope that is actively damaging for everyone's romantic expectations, including women. For men, because of the reasons you stated. For women, because it creates the idea that if a guy is pushy enough he can win her over. Because even though she may reject a guy, he won't take no for an answer as he secretly believes pressing the right buttons can flick a romantic feelings switch in her head. Almost like throwing enough coins in a vendor machine until there's enough to get the candy bar roll out. Weird AF.

It's damaging for the self-respect of men and their willingness to walk away while not wasting time on bullshit, and damaging for women by constantly having to deal with orbiting losers trying to impress them, or even violate their boundaries. Everyone just loses and for this reason it's a dumb trope that we need to get over already.

There are just a few films that did this right. One of which is (500) Days of Summer. The main character not only got pushed away due to his clinginess, but also has no happy ending. He dug himself in too deep, and that's it. That's where it ends. With him just having to accept that he can't force someone to feel the same as him and that it's better to just get it over with and move on. The lesson for him was to not put all his eggs in one basket and confuse his fantasy world with the actual wants and needs of people.

It’s probably because half of movie goers are women and they’d either laugh at or be scornful of a movie about some woman simping for a man. On the other hand, men like movies about men being masculine role models, and these masculine activities are coincidentally also what attracts women.

You can see a lot of female simping in the Japanese harem manga/anime genre, but women don’t usually read these works, and it’s no coincidence that a lot of men laugh and ridicule these works too, mostly because they seem unrealistic and they therefore cater to low-value men.

I don’t think that Hollywood is “guilty” of anything. They are just giving viewers the idealized world that they want to see.

I’m of sure I’d characterize those particular movies that way, I haven’t seen the latest Bond movie but in Spiderman, he and MJ have known each other a long time, they didn’t just meet. In the latest Matrix, I wouldn’t say Trinity is “meh” about him, she just thinks she’s married with kids and doesn’t remember who she is or who he is until later on.

However, I do agree that lots of movies do push this trope, that if you just don’t give up, one day the girl who’s not into you will fall in love with you. And yeah, it’s not good for men or women. Sometimes stalker-ish behavior is depicted as romantic. And as someone with an ex who won’t give up after 10 years, it’s not. It’s scary.

Now I don’t think MOST people are influenced by movies enough for this to be the cause. But there is definitely a certain type who views themselves as the protagonist in their own movie, and will do whatever it takes to make the other “characters” play their parts. This is my ex. There are women like that too actually, they might present a little differently than the men, but they will definitely fixate on certain people and become unstable if they don’t respond they way they want. So I guess what I’m saying is yeah, it’s a problem in movies, but the real problem as always is mental health.

There is a negative to this - many men grow up thinking that "no" doesn't actually mean no and that a girl will eventually say yes if they push for long enough. Think of all the movies where those huge romantic gestures (often knowing her address, finding her at work, etc.) come AFTER the girl rejects him initially. It should end there, but movies try to paint it as charming? All genders have the wrong playbook from movies.

You're absolutely right, those movie/book bullshit shouldn't be taken seriously. A lot of boys are never teached how to deal with attraction by they parents ( or are given the wrong advice ) so when they watch movies and cartoons implying that women are wonderful perfect princess that need to be put in pedestals they end up becoming toxic simps with nice guys syndrome.

I hate those type of stories because they were exactly the reason why i became a toxic dude in school. I did every cringe thing you can think of to get attention from a girl that i barely had any conversations with and everytime we talked to each other it never lead anywhere.

Some girls in school thought i was cute for doing generic romantic movie stuff like sending flowers and cute letters, so much that they pretty much forced the girl everyday to give me some credit even after months of rejections, everything because i thought that's how good guys suppose to act not just because of movies but because men and women all around me always told me that guys suppose to do everything for the woman they love no matter if they're hurting themselves or not so no matter how much i felt bad for being rejected i always tried my best to get her attention or make her happy which end up being bad for us both.

What is even weirder is that some people in school found me annoying for that but they never considered me toxic ( maybe they did but i never noticed i dunno ), everybody always thought i was just too cute which helped me with my mental health ( i was depressed at the time ) but as you can see it fucked my morals and self awareness at the time.

Weird thing²: The boys were precisely the ones that felt annoyed the most by my bullshit while the ladies rarely defended the idea that i should stop, which is weird because i always hear ( not just from the redpills but from everyone ) that women always defend each other no matter what.

Thank god i became a better person with time. I wouldn't say i'm a good dude, i have a lot of flaws but i'm certanly way better than i was some years ago.

Well, some years later i fell in love with a girl but i only considered a relationship after years of friendship ( no regrets here ). When she rejected me it felt bad but you know i just moved on perfectly willing to continue with our friendship normaly. Some days later she said i was toxic and never loved her because i didn't insisted on her. Like, what? I'm toxic if i insist and toxic if i don't? So what is the point of even trying? Weird thing is when i stoped trying some female friends of mine complained saying that men should be the ones to aproach, so what the hell am i suppose to do here?
