Someone (I think) I didn’t know tried to break into my house a few months ago. They knocked several times and when I didn’t answer, slammed their body into the door for a few minutes attempting to break the lock. They had a pick up truck backed into my driveway. I called 911 and they left before the cops got there. I’m so grateful nothing bad happened, but it scares me to think what would have happened if I had opened the door.

I have two heavy-duty baseball bats that will knock someone's block off. They are called Brooklyn Crushers. I wanted its big brother, The Brooklyn Basher, but it was out of stock at the time. I keep one in my car and one next to my bed. I also keep Raid Wasp & Flying Insect Spray nearby at home and at my desk at work. It has a further reach than bear spray or mace and it will permanently blind a person. I ain't playin'.

If you live in a multi-apartment dwelling, please lock you door every time you leave, even if it's broad daylight and you are just running down to the laundry room, getting your mail or taking out the trash. It only takes a couple of seconds for someone to sneak in, do a quick check on what you own, and plan to take it later. Or decide to hide in your closet instead.

DO NOT invite neighbors into your house. Sounds rude, but you don't know them and you are giving them a map of your home. My ex-husband and I made that mistake when we had a noise complaint against our new downstairs neighbor 15 years ago. We invited him up to hear how loud his music was (he seemed like a "nice guy") and he ended up being a drug dealer who had his boys break into our apartment to teach us a lesson for complaining against him.

Don't let anyone know where you work. All they'd have to do is call to see if you're there and then they'd know the coast is clear.

Sexism and patriarchy aside, I can see the logic in women living at home till they’re married for safety reasons. Men are always trying to stalk and attack vulnerable women living on their own. I hated that hypervigilance I had to have when I was living in a major city alone. Always having to have the Uber or Lyft driver drop you off down the street, so they didn’t know where you live. Leaving old men’s stuff around so people think you have a man living with you. It was too much to come constantly be thinking of that stuff.

My partner and I are both women, we live together partially in the woods. We don't like guns but we know how to use shotguns. Our yard has motion activated flood lights. Our giant pyrenees deters most people, we always take him whenever we walk or travel anywhere.

The best decision I made as a single woman was moving from a stand-alone house to a heavily secured condo (24/7 doorman, cameras everywhere, locks at all entrances, no callbox). I had so many scares in the house, including a strange man who tried to force himself in at night because he knew I was home. Cops never caught him. I feel much safer in my condo since I don’t have randos knocking on my door anymore, but as many have already noted, we need to stay vigilant nonetheless.

I see a lot of ladies mentioning dogs. They are good as a deterrent and to alert you that someone is on your property that you might not be able to hear yourself, but please don't rely on them to protect you if they're not trained guard dogs. A lot of dogs are all bark and no bite. I have a dog that is known as a "dangerous breed", and she will bark at strangers, but one time a male house guest advanced on her, and all she did was bark while backing into a corner and peed in fear.

As a woman who lives alone, I’m constantly reminded how grateful I am for my German Shepherd. He scares the shit out of everyone but he’s a total sweetheart to me. I sleep peacefully at night knowing he’s at the end of my bed. He’s in the backyard for hours at a time, letting everyone know we’re not to be fucked with. He sits in my backseat with the windows down and watches me walk in and out of places. I encourage every single woman to get a dog.

It’s worth noting that in the UK at least signs like this are also being used by dog thieves. Dog theft has gone through the roof over the past year as lots of people are at home and fancy getting a dog but there aren’t enough to meet current demand. (Of course lots of them end up abandoned in shelters when people realise that puppies are actually hard work).

I live alone but on a nice safe estate with, neighbours who I feel look out for me (funny coincidence my next door neighbour is my childhood baby sitter). The house is tiny compared to what I could have elsewhere but worth it for feeling safer.

With a ring camera you can set a chime to play dogs barking. If you get 2 chimes, you can set one to a normal bell noise, one to dogs barking. Then people are less likely to pick up on the ruse :)

Back when I was dating and optimistic about the state of men, this is what was always in the back of my mind when someone would accuse me of being desperate or tell me I should just forget about men. The presence of a man made me feel safer. Creeper neighbor would back off when he saw a new guy’s car parked in my driveway overnight consistently. Inappropriate coworker would back off if word got out that I was seeing someone.

Men only respect the presence of other men, if that. Living as a single woman is liberating, but it makes you more vulnerable. I don’t know martial arts. I don’t want a gun in my home. I might get a big dog, though. This just goes to show even when we rid ourselves of them, we’re never truly free.

Just came here to say that I love my new lock- uber pro. Got it off Amazon. Opens with a fingerprint or a code, so my ex can't copy my kids' keys. Auto locks, so no wondering if I locked the door or not. I can give a temporary code to the pet sitter if I need to. If the wifi goes down, there's a manual key I can use. I freaking love it. Not sure what it says about my life that I am so excited about an electronic lock, but here we are...

I’m 23 and 5’1 and I’ve been living alone for almost two years now and here’s my take:

At my last apartment, there were THREE separate incidents, all weeks/months apart, that I saw my doorknob slowly being turned without any knocking. Someone checking to see if I accidentally left it unlocked and they could quietly sneak in. If I personally saw it three times, god knows how many times it happened when I was sleeping or in the shower and didn’t see. Called the apartment complex’s security and they said they didn’t have any cameras and no one actually got into my apartment, so they couldn’t do anything. “Maybe they thought your door was theirs”. 🙄

An extra slide lock on the door really helped my peace of mind since any chump can Google how to pick a lock. I also got a self defense keychain for my keys and a taser I always keep in my purse. Definitely makes me feel a lot safer. The walls are hella thin so I talk out loud to myself or to my fish a lot when I’m home so it sounds like I’m talking to other people. Never tell anyone other than close family and friends that you live alone; you never know who that information will spread to

Years ago I had someone try to get through my window when I wasn’t home. They took off the screen and opened the glass but never made it through because my 170lb dog jumped out at them. 10/10 good boy, he was happy as a clam in the yard when I got back and whoever it was was long gone. It was scary at first but now I laugh at the mental image of someone being surprise-tackled by a dog the size of a football player. The same dog caught a mouse at one point and was gentle enough to pick it up without harming it.
