I didn’t grow up with cats and used to think I hated them too because of pick me tendencies and an (emotionally abusive) ex who hated them who I just wanted approval from. We got a cat in November and I’m absolutely obsessed with her. Cats are so interesting and wonderful and she adds so much to my life! I totally agree with your post and I feel bad for my past cat hating ways.

Notice that if you press men to tell you why they hate cats, they will immediately compare them to dogs. The qualities of dogs that they usually deem superior are: loyalty, obedience, and, above all, unconditional and undeserved love. Now I love dogs too, but do those answers remind you of anything?

I think the main issue isn't hating animals, it's hating YOUR animals.

Some people don't want pets because of the time, energy, money, etc sink they can be. I can understand that. I can also understand having bad experiences with cats/dogs etc or having allergies. I get it.

But that doesn't excuse a nvm coming in and demanding you get rid of your pets or him making explicit comments about your pets being bad, annoying, mean, etc when they are doing nothing to him. A NVM will see your pets as competition for your affection and time and will do their best to make sure that they are the priority and nothing else.

My ex loved cats, dogs etc but did not want do deal with the responsibility of caring for them and did everything in his power to sabotage me having pets.

Over the course of 11 years, my naïve self had various animals with the smaller ones (like guinea pigs and chinchillas) dying randomly and without warning despite excellent care. Any animals that were larger, like cats, I was forced to give away because he would put us in a position (like moving into an apartment that didn't accept cats) where I had no choice.

Some people have valid reasons for not liking cats -- allergies, trauma, health issues, the smell of cat litter, anything like that. But the thing is I don't think those people hate cats. It seems like they just dislike them and wouldn't keep them as pets. People that say they truly hate them do give me that weird controlling vibe, because most of the people that say that are big fans of dogs. Like of course a jerk would highly prefer an animal that still madly loves them even when they put sharp choke collars on them and leave them alone for hours. Cats take way more effort and time to establish a relationship with, and are not for people with control issues.

I pretty much don’t like dogs, I mean they’re fine but living with one would be a deal breaker, and part of it is a smell and feeling. I know cats have some smell in some peoples homees (even clean people if the home is small) and a fur /scratch issue so I can’t blame anyone who is too anal to want to live with one if he’s a clean and hardworking person. Hating any animals is a red flag. Thinking some pets are more masculine or feminine than others is a red flag and a show of dull wittedness. That woman needs some FDS in her life so next time she won’t be so weak as to rehomed beloved family members for the sake of a man who it sounds like is setting up to be controlling. Pets develop deep attachments to us and they grieve deeply when we die or they have to leave. I have no respect for her or her boyfriend and hope they don’t get any pets together.

LVM hate it when women's attention isn't on them. They feel if the cat wasn't there, they'd be the one getting pets and cuddles. She's also getting emotional support/oxytocin/comfort from the cat. He wasn't going to provide it, he just hate that it's balancing out his abuse and she's happier.

They also perceive cat's expressions to be "smug" (that's some legitimate mental illness right there).

And cats are discerning. LVM can't snap their fingers like they can to most dogs and get love and validation that they're a good person worth approaching. Cats let them know they aint shit.

I've seen a lot of videos of men hurting cats. One I saw like a decade ago, some loser held out his hand to trick the poor cat come over then kicked it against the wall where it almost bounced off and quickly ran away (hope it was ok). The forum where this was posted had people that found it genuinely funny. Just look on YouTube of people bullying or abusing cats (or don't). The majority of the time it's some NVM hurting a weaker creature for entertainment and views and the comments are full of laughter.

Men who find hurting animals funny, especially cats (especially angry cats who are just aggressive to humans because they've been abused), are the lowest of the low and should be avoided at all costs.

And avoid women who hate them too. Lots of the time they're LVW who hate cats for similar reasons- they have low self esteem and are the type who would sell their firstborn for some male attention. They're the ones who resent and insult women with high standards and strong boundaries, and they hate cats for that very reason. LVWcan be dangerous too.

Love how you point out that it always comes down to an “attitude.” Unconscious attitudes are very predictive of behaviors like rape and abuse, and they tend to be very subtle, so if women point it out, we are easily gaslighted. Lundy Bancroft’s book “Why Does He Do That” explains how mental illness doesn’t cause abuse - only abusive attitudes cause abuse, and these attitudes aren’t picked up by negative experiences with women, instead, they’re picked up from other men (homosociality) and the culture! I distrust people who hate/mistreat animals. If they hurt the small creature who is dependent on them for care, it’s not a stretch that attitude extends toward humans. I also don’t trust people my pets don’t like.

A green flag is a man going out of his way to befriend your animal they way your animal is comfortable with. If he lets your pet come to him when they are comfortable, learns how to care for them, and is actively concerned for your pets welfare, it’s a very green flag.

Case in point, my husband was against getting a cat until my mental health was suffering. With out me knowing, he researches cats, cat care, costs, etc, and set up an appt for us to adopt a cat and my husband is now an engaged cat dad.

I think it really is a great analogy! I am fully convinced I previously was a cat and brought my feline traits over to this life so if they don’t like cats, that simply would not work.

Joking aside, I have seen a couple of posts from people considering rehoming pets on a new partner’s request. I find that totally appalling. It’s controlling to say the least. I also tend to think that people who don’t like animals have little/no compassion and are just not very nice so to me that wouldn’t be a red flag but a hard pass. The guy would be gone before the pets.

My uncle is an extremely HVM, lawyer, 6 figures, been married to my aunt for 30 years and still super in love, great to his kids and great to me. He’s told me that he doesn’t respect dogs because they’ll love anyone and anything. (So basically he doesn’t respect dogs because they’re massive pickmes) He likes cats because cats decide whether they like you based on how well you treat them and that shows pride and dignity. I don't know. I know anecdote isn't data, but I've dated two super toxic men who loved cats. Both described dogs as being "too needy." Both also believed cats were more intelligent and by proxy, that they were superior people for liking cats (I suspect both men are covert narcissists). It's more of a red flag to me if a man you're dating doesn't seem to know how to interact with your pets or doesn't treat them well, your pets don't like them and/or they pressure you to get rid of them. In short, if he has problems with your pets not so much what animal they are.

I live in the US, and i’ve noticed for a while that cats seem to occupy the same place that women do in our culture. Things that dogs do are praised, but cats doing the same things are criticized, or even vilified. An example: when experts found that cats don’t meow at each other in the wild, and that the meow is a unique vocalization cats have developed for communicating with humans, cat-haters immediately jumped on it, proclaiming cats to be “manipulative”. But can you imagine the praise dogs would get if they developed a special vocalization just for communicating with humans? Similar to the way women are scrutinized and criticized for doing things that men are praised for (or at least get away with) doing.

Another thing is that the quality that the most vocal cat-haters hate about cats is the fact that they don’t immediately show love and affection. You have to earn a cat’s trust. How many incels are angry at women for not giving every ugly scrote that expresses interest in them “a chance”?

Also, relationships with cats are not as clearly hierarchical as the master-slave relationship that a human can have with a dog. Cats don’t display the same obviously submissive behaviors that dogs do, and they typically won’t do something unnatural (like perform tricks) to get humans’ attention. Look at how obsessed some men are with any kind of ranked social environment (*cough* the military *cough*). They’ll gladly show submissive behavior to the men that outrank them (their boss, or commanding officer), while exerting every bit of dominance they can over those that are ranked beneath them. These men usually expect to occupy the highest ranked position in their families, and get mad when their wives and children don’t show proper deference.

Hating ANY animal (except maybe mosquitoes and ticks) is a red flag. If you have a phobia, deal with that shit in therapy! If you’re allergic, take your allergy medication. Animals are amazing, and we are so much more dangerous to them than they are to us. Fear and caution are different, but hate??? I think hating cats can definitely be a red flag, but I also want to point out that a man loving cats isn't necessarily a green flag either. After all, Colty from 90 Day Fiance loves cats and if you watch the show you already know just how much of a LVM he is. And of course he isn't the only NVM/LVM out there who is a potential cat lover.

As a huge cat person, it would be amazing if a man loving cats was a green flag but it isn't. I know the post didn't talk about this but I just want to point out that although a man hating cats can be a red flag, a man loving them isn't necessarily a good sign.

My NVX hated dogs and loved cats. He hated people in general and appreciated the idgaf attitude of cats. He was rude to service people as well. So, no, not necessarily a sign of HVM. In his case, his love of cats was related to his sense of intellectual superiority, narcissism, and a huge red flag. My other narc ex loved dogs and hated cats, so I guess that the moral of the story is that is doesn't tell you much, just one more thing that adds them to the "no" category.

I think the red flag is more how they treat animals…not just cats, but all companion animals. Some people don’t care for animals, but are still respectful of them and would never demand you get rid of beloved pets. Some people can love pets, have several, but take shitty care of them. And of course, some people can hate cats and be abusive towards them, but love all other animals. I think overall behavior and treatment of pets (their own and other people’s) is definitely something to vet.

I dislike cat ownership because they absolutely destroy the native wildlife.

My views on this are very strong, eg if I was a dictator I'd make it illegal to have an outside cat and I'd instate some kind of neutering program so the vast majority of cats couldn't breed and I'd set up traps for feral cats.

But I don't hate CATS, if I'm somewhere with a cat you bet I'm playing with it and patting it if it wants to be patted. They're good fun! I've had people be surprised at this! As though because I care about the environment I'm going to be a massive arsehole and hurt the cat?? Of course I won't, I have this view because I respect animals, all of them, and cats are just following their natural instincts, they can't help it.

Dog person here. Haven’t been able to have a cat for 15 years because of compatibility with my canine BFF. I really do love cats too though.

So I ask if he likes cats or dogs. You usually hear variations on:

“I can’t have cats because I always had dogs. Would be nice though and I can’t wait to have another in my life.” or, “I love cats. Dogs are fun, but I’ve just always been a cat person.”

This isn’t a lack of red flag. Ask questions about why he’s a dog/cat person. See if he loves dogs because “unconditional love” or “dogs are always happy to see you.” Or cats because “I’m away from home a lot and a dog would be too much work, but I hate coming home to an empty apartment.”

Does he just love dogs/cats so very much, or does he want to own a living creature whose feelings are easy to ignore. Saying “I love cats” is not a green flag.

In conclusion, men who hate cats are just indignant about having to respect the bodily autonomy of a beautiful creature because they think they are entitled adoration and see boundaries as an attack on them (cuz everything is about them, of course).

Very insightful! I never thought about it that deeply before.

I also think some of the hatred could stem from the fact that cats, unlike male partners, kids, extended family members, and even dogs, don’t require women to work themselves to the bone to take care of them. Of course cats need to be fed/given water, given veterinary care, brushed/pet, have their litter boxes cleaned, and played with, but on the whole they are among the easiest pets to have provided they don’t have any major behavioral or health issues. They are a source of companionship and physical affection without requiring as much as a husband or a child. I think perhaps society just doesn’t like women having a replenishing relationship like that; I think perhaps they’re uncomfortable with women not always being in the position of serving.

Edit: Interestingly, people seem to call cats “she” and dogs “he” by default more than the other way around. I wonder if it has to do with a subconscious association of relaxing and having boundaries with femininity and being eager to please with masculinity lol.

I'm a woman and I dislike cats because I'm highly allergic to them (like, throat closing and needing to go to the ER allergic) and I've never found them cute or charming. I also have huge hygiene concerns with cats. I have nothing against them but I wouldn't want to live with one and I would find it extremely difficult to come to a compromise in a relationship with a cat owner. The worst man I've ever met in my entire life was a huge cat person. I don't believe that pet preferences indicate much in the way of a person's character, unless of course they are outright hateful or abusive to animals (and then it doesn't really matter which animal they are treating that way).

Yeah no. That's definitely reaching. I wouldn't say I hate cats, I even find many of them cute in pictures. I just would never live with one. Then again, I simply wouldn't get with someone who has cats. The bf probably just doesn't see pets as part of the family as many on Reddit do. In that case, the rehoming says more about the owner than the bf. I suspect many cat and dog owners don't think of pet spiders as equivalent. Well, imagine it's the same for the bf and people like him.

As for reasons why I dislike being near cats, they walk everywhere with their paws that have been who knows where and there are the claws and the teeth. You also mentioned cats having physical boundaries. Well for some of us who don't want pets, part of the problem is that they don't understand boundaries. This can also be culture specific. For example, my culture just doesn't see pets like many do in the US. Not everything needs an essay to explain.

I would agree that a man who pressures their partners into getting rid of their pets (or into getting pets they don't want for that matter) is indeed trash.

Interesting thought. I would say, yes, it is a red flag. Cats are lovable, emotional, kind, and they do bond with people. In my experience, the most LVM that I dated (there have been more than one in my pickme days prior to Covid and discovering FDS) did not like cats and would make fun of anyone who did. Cats are seem as introverted, unfriendly and lame. He ended up being the biggest LVM and narcissist. Alternatively, I was in a lovely long term relationship with a HVM (which I fucked up… again was in my pickme days and didn’t realize what I had and left to travel and live abroad, thinking that there were many men just like him - wrong!) and we actually adopted kittens together and he was kind, gentle and loving with them. There is nothing cuter than seeing a big, broad shouldered man with two little kittens on his shoulders playing and him being amused. Another man I was in a long term relationship with (who I thought I would marry until I realized he had been cheating on me) just didn’t pay the cats any mind. No playing, petting, caring or feeding. This to me was psychopathic and indicated how his parenting style will be. So all in all… yes people / men who say they don’t like cats or make fun of you for being a cat lady and try to neg you can go fuck right off and do not entertain these guys.
