This is why past matters before getting into an LTR. Earlier this morning one of my coworkers wife, been married for 5 years, was trying to get a job a the middle school as a substitute teacher on this base. Base has been desperate for teachers over the last 3 or 4 years, and his wife seemed perfectly qualified for the job. Come find out they do a background check and the wife had a record of being arrested back when she was 18 for drug possession and prostitution. Apparently he knew about her previous drug habits but didn't know she had been arrested for it, nor the prostitution. Dude said his wife told him she only did it because it was easy money and could support her drug habit. Apparently she had been doing it until she was about 22 and quit.

Dude has been fucked up all morning because he found all this out last night. Its crazy, because I've seen his wife a few times and I never on anything would have thought she had a history like that. She seems like the nicest woman you could ever meet at at age 30. Thats real fucked up.

What would you do if you found out your SO had a history like this but never told you until years later? Would you still stay with that person?

Maybe this is solipsism, but I see so many male users here talking about men being “the gatekeepers of commitment” and women supposedly having a hard time getting men to commit to them, but… I just don’t think that’s the case? To me, it seems like any woman can gatekeep both sex and commitment, as long as her standards are appropriate relative to her own market value.

As a male, I think the whole issue of nice guys vs assholes is often grossly oversimplified for the sake of argument. Keep in mind that like political opinions, except for the extreme outliers most people lie somewhere in the middle range of the spectrum (Chris Rock would have something to say about that). A lot of dudes I know including what you would call "jerks" show a bit of both extremes, depending on their stage in life, the people they are around, or their level of confidence in a particular setting. People experiment with rapid microchanges in personality in social situations, or even alternate in a chronic way over time. I haven't really met 100% tough guys or 100% perfect gentlemen in my experience.

Rather than the binary nice guy/asshole classification, it's probably more effective to imagine two categories or lists of character traits labeled "aggressive" (confidence, spontaneity, etc.) and "passive" (tact, sensitivity), or something to that effect. Most peoples' personalities are an amalgam of traits culled from both lists in a proportion that is unique to the individual. Kind of like a Myers-Briggs for sexual attractiveness, where the high school quarterback is a 70:30 aggressive/passive type. The point is that no one is stuck in a particular category, and you can pick appealing traits from the "aggressive" category to inherit if you work hard enough to improve yourself, and keep the "passive" traits that are attractive to women.

Admittedly though, it is much easier for the "aggression-heavy" males to learn how to play nice than it is for the quiet and sensitive dudes to suddenly adopt confidence in an effort to get women.

tl;dr- Girls don't like dating "jerks"; they like dating "nice guys" who have a few of the qualities usually attributed to jerks but by no means monopolized by them.
