As I get older, Im starting to realize looks are not as important as the dating scene makes it seem. I had a "situationshp" last year that ended really badly. Looking back on it, there were tons of red flags I overlooked because I found them very attractive. I was literally blinded by their beauty.

The last good relationship that I had that ended due to distance was with someone who wasn't unattractive but not typically "my type" that I ended up being very compatible with. We met in person. Ive heard stories about "the one that got away" because they were sure they could do better and that wasn't the case. My best friend is married to someone who he wasn't even that attracted to when they initially met. The attraction grew as he got to know her. Now he can't imagine being with anyone else.

The biggest issue dating today to me is that looks are valued more than anything else. Looking at people I know that have married and divorced, a lot of them were not that compatible in other areas besides attraction. Like I said, I am guilty of placing way too much importance on looks.

As long as someone meets your minimum level of attraction, shouldn't looking for someone who matches values and is compatible with your lifestyle more important? Physical attraction / Lust in my experience is not enough for a relationship to work. You need to be on same page about certain things. I feel like if I continue to spend my life thinking that there is someone better out there, I will never find this "perfect person". I can’t imagine being this shallow person when I too will be old and looks inevitably fade. Frankly, nobody can run away from time.

Do you feel that looks are too emphasized when looking for a long term relationship? Have you ever overlooked red flags because you found someone attractive? How important are looks to you when dating? Are there things you value over beauty?
