Do women really mature faster than men?

It depends on a lot of factors. Physically, it seems to be the general consensus that women mature faster. But from the comments I see that in different regions, maturity is measured differently. From my perspective (23 yo Black woman from an African country) I can safely say that I was thrust into maturity quite early, maturity being brought upon by having heavy responsibilities prematurely. I was picking up chores at 5 years old and looking after my younger sister a year before then. My sister is less so mature than I am because she can rely on me, but we both are way more mature than our brother. My older brother is pushing 35 and can't hold down a job. He's seldom had to take on responsibility for anything and when shit hits the fan, mom has him sorted out.

I've never had to think "oh, I can rely on a man at some point" because men here are fickle. He can leave, and he will regardless of what you offer should he feel like it and that's valid. However, I've seen most of the black women around me carry everything and give up everything because they want to be with a certain man...I refuse to be like them.

I do prefer dating same age to older men though (3-5 years) because I feel like his life is at least headed the same direction I'm headed.

I'd say it's because girls are often expected to take care of their younger siblings or participate more in the household than most boys (obviously, there are exceptions). Even toys targeted at girls often include chores and such. By the time the move out they can basically take care themselves while a lot of men only start learning then, that's just been my personal experience of living with 20+ different roommates.

Also women are expected to think about children, families and their future a lot earlier, starting with choosing their profession. At 18 people kept telling me I had chosen a good field of study because I would have it easy to have children in that profession. At the same age nobody bats an eye at guys that are into video games and legos while women are supposed to have a complete life plan because of their "biological clock".

Everyone just let's guys enjoy their youth and early 20s a little more because "they mature slower".

People are maturing at such a slow rate these days, I feel this discussion is irrelevant.

I think traditionally, women’s biological clock could have had on impact on being mature sooner. There have been studies done on brain development differences, so there could be that too… But nah, people these days are maturing at a much slower rate anyway, so I don’t know how much of brain development is actually playing a role. The narrative these days is horrible, and is not often about taking personal accountability.

I don’t think women necessarily mature faster. I think the things people measure “maturity” by are things that women are more prone to valuing or wanting to do. Things like having a family and a domestic life are things that people see as “mature.” And these are things that many women see as something they want from an early age. So they’re more likely to take the steps to put themselves in that position. Men, on the other hand, are more prone to valuing adventure and excitement over everything. So some would say they “mature” slower. And some would say that in cultures and countries where there is no system built in that puts young men in those adventurous, exciting situations (mandatory military service, missionary work, exploration,etc) men never grow past that stage and seek excitement and adventure their entire lives. Or at least far longer than men in cultures where they get that “out of their system” early. But the only real difference is the differences between what men and women value and what society sees as “mature.”

Let's elaborate on the context of that claim. Females mature faster than males in that they:

Hit puberty earlier.
Develop teenage mindset while males are still running around with the boy mindset.

As to what happens after teenage years that is anybody's guess, no work that I've read focused on that, but I think it's highly unlikely that males stay forever behind on the development scale.

The prefrontal cortex, or frontal lobe, develops in the mid-20s for both men and women. It’s responsible for regulating risk-taking behavior. It’s why we see a lot of young guys driving dangerously, or doing extreme sports. It’s also why we see a lot of young women dating jerks and believing doing porn or camming is emPowErInG.

Women’s frontal lobes tend to develop slightly earlier (early 20s) than men’s (mid-20s). It is absolutely not an excuse for predatory old men to chase young women. I believe women tend to enter puberty a bit earlier than men. Their bodies tend to finish developing earlier than men. But in terms of mental maturity? That's probably going to depend on the individual's circumstances more than biology. The only biological basis I could buy into is that women reach a mental maturity level to handle raising children faster than men do for obvious reasons.

I think in most cases the claim "women mature faster" is just another extension of the "girls are better than boys" school of egotism.

In society currently, I think they're forced to. They have to deal with the prospect of bring sexualised and those who would do them harm from it from a young age and are generally given more responsibility than young men. It may not be that adult women act like teenagers so much as teenagers girls are already expected to behave like adults so there isn't much of a change. That's not a reason why anyone should go for someone older though.

I find these questions very compelling.

Firstly, what is the definition of maturity?

Independence would probably be one that men would think of first, and if you’re a straight woman looking for a significant other because a lot of us are socially conditioned to think that a man must be a provider and that must then be the mark of maturity. A boy is to be provided for, a man does the providing.

But there is more to maturity, especially in modern society, at least in my humble opinion and it’s often in these “subtle” aspects that I feel like women are often expected to be more mature than men and because of a societal expectation, they kind of have to respond.

Like the concept of boys pulling a girls pigtails. He just likes you and he’s doing it for attention. The expectation is for the girl to rise above that and not do something to hurt the boy back. There’s a significant expectation for girls to control their impulses that is not nearly as heavily enforced in boys.

Younger girls, especially in POC households, were expected to help cook and clean and essentially do the bulk of household chores with their mothers, that isn’t expected of their male siblings or family. Even when boys are expected to do this, the goal is for them to mature enough so that they can become independent. The expectation for the girls isn’t for them to become independent, they have to learn it so that their future significant others and children can depend on them. Maturity isn’t independence like for boys, it’s responsibility, specifically learning to take on responsibility to help someone else.

This leads me to my next issue with conceptualizing maturity because women seem to also just value interpersonal relationships more than men do, and men prioritize status. So maturity will automatically look different based off these values.

For a woman to be mature, a lot of things need to be taken in stride. Holding one’s tongue when they hear something offensive in order to keep the peace. For a man, it’s often to speak up when something is wrong and to not be a “coward” and to be able to protect the one’s they care about.

I think another part of this maturity question that is so interesting comes from over-analyzing your statement :

nobody wants a work in progress when a finished product is more desirable.

Why is a finished product more desirable? Because a finished product can help, they can do things, they work.

I think as a society one of the most valued markers of maturity is what they can do to help others. The automatic assumption is that they must work, to further the cause of a society.

Women are rarely taught to be independent, rather they are taught to be helpful for other people. So on one hand, they’re kind of meant to be forever incomplete (because they aren’t taught to function on their own) and therefore immature, on the other hand, they’re seen as more mature growing up because they’ve learned to serve others earlier.

Anyway, don’t hold me to these ideas, they may very well change. This is just kind of my two cents on it for now. I’m completely open to people disagreeing with me. If anything, I want someone to change my mind.

I believe a big part of it is the motivation that young men and girls receive in early life.

For the young girls I knew in my life, growing up and becoming an adult was almost fetishised. From a really young age they talk about growing up, getting jobs, getting married. They dress and wear makeup older than their age. They follow an idealised version of adulthood, like the Friday music video. This is what I observed in my sister, friends' sisters, and the handful of girls I knew at that age.

Boys on the other hand are taught to embrace a more wild side. Or possibly a nerdier side, where we sit around playing video games for hours on end. At least this is how it was for college types. I knew plenty of others that went on to become plumbers and what not at 17, and they were like gruff adults at 19.

But when I see men and women closer to 30, at my age, there's not a huge difference.

As for the mental part. From my experience, some women well into their 30s and 40s have relational maturity of a 20 year old. And then there are some that eventually mature and while they mature their taste in partners seem to change as well. I have my speculation on why this is the case though.

I prefer to be the hotter one in the relationship so maybe that’s where these ideas come from. It’s easier to be secure and not worried a man will leave you if he’s not walking around getting hit on all the time.

Differences in brain development for boys and girls are clear between the age of 11- 13 while boys catch up to girls between the ages of 13-16 from there on they both develop the same until it completes until the age 25-27. I can make an argument that women stop developing when they realise they are beautiful and get away with stuff.

I think usually they do. Especially childhood and teenage years and I'd say early 20s too. I think even baby girls tend to learn how to talk first? So emotional intelligence develops first perhaps. This is just the average and I think at some point it does equal out and then comes down to personal development which is probably affected by nature and nurture.

At this point in time, I think my bf (m 30) is actually a bit more mature than me (28 f) in some ways. In other ways I might have a leg up but if you average it out I think he might be a bit more mature than me. But I really look up to him in those areas.

edit: I think I shine in emotional maturity and being able to communicate in a constructive way (like in ways where during a fight I can shift the thinking to we are a team and on the same side and can work together on a solution) while he shines in logical maturity and maturity involving decision making (like budgeting and our next two years / strategic thinking). He's less impulsive than I am but he's also neurotypical and I'm ADHD af.

It's also highly due to the environment and care if parents. If the parents are caring then they would be much more caring and give much more attention to a girl than a boy. People simply say boys are easy and neglect they boys which is not true. Boys do also need as much care. But girls are seen as someone to protect so they are given much more care. If you are talking physically then yes. The sciences have already observed this. Girls tend to not just hit, but outwardly display characteristics of puberty earlier than boys. Hence the height disparity often seen in middle school. In addition the brain between the two develops at different rates and in different ways. This is not to claim a form of "mental superiority" is inherent in that difference though as it is related to how the brain communicates with itself in relation to outward and inward stimuli.

If you are talking non-physically, ie: mentally/emotionally. Then I think a large part of that is more individualized and in most cases relates to the greater macro-sphere of the society they are being raised in and the micro-sphere of their own households. If either sex is raised without an expectation of responsibility then it's feature of character that may be more difficult to develop organically. In the same context, if no reprecussions are instilled regarding action in behaviors, then character development may be stunted in either male or female youth.

Now this following observation may not sit well with everyone because it remarks upon the dreaded "patriarchy" as a source of this disparity . But if you care to, you can read on. Taking into consideration that the sciences have observed that girls tend to hit and show characteristics of puberty sooner could make this easier to understand. The arguably benign or malignant comment that seems to be inherent in many societies ( which have been unrelentingly patriarchal throughout history) is that "boys will be boys". Since adults have already accepted this as a given, as in men remember the allowance of this and women experienced the need to accommodate this. If you have a daughter and she begins to show signs of puberty you will start explaining to her how she needs to begin being proactive in how she interacts with the world around her because she is about to start being treated far different to how she had been. As a result, expectations and repercussions have been expressed to her in a way that does not have the same intensity that her brother may have received. The onus of regulating ones behavior and further, the impression made on their environment is, in effect, given at a social level to girls while boys are largely excused from that. Why? Well because boys will be boys of course and simply cannot help the way they are.

It could be argued that the effect this has on boys is a detriment as is gives a hall pass on early development regarding personal accountability while simultaneously forcing girls into an unbalanced expectation of that same thing with the added weight of being responsible for how other act as well.

This is a singular and overt example and cannot of course, be justified for every individual. But it is an example how society, with it's preconceived notions and standards can and does adjust and alter how we interact with each other on a broader scale. Which could be interpreted as a variance in "maturity".

I would consider maturity different. I don't think one side matures faster than the other by default. I think most people aren't mature and still act as kids. I think maturity are traits we build in ourselves and our kids.

The ability to fail and learn and grow from it.

The ability to communicate effectively without taking critiques personally.

The ability to understand when we are wrong and own it.

Then I think it comes around also as we learn our own weakness and strengths as we age.

A 13 y/o girl that already develop will be approach by 16-17 yo guys because they find her attractive, and a 16-17 year old guy is more mature(in general) than a 13yo Sane thing happens when women hit 18-21 years of age, they are approach by men in all ages thus being thrusted into expecting more. Cause the same 21 yo girl will be "courted" by a 24yo, 34yo, 45yo men and that is a huge gap for men specially financially. There are different types of maturity. If you mean maturity by being risk adverse, women tend to be risk adverse with all that implies. If you mean maturity by handling situations men are best. They tend to panic way less then women and can focus their hearing and senses ( tunnel vision ) If you mean on empathy or apprended behavior abd emotional maturity it depends. A mature individual has all of them together in a mixture. There is no perfection.

Most men spend their time knowing that they aren't free to share the full extent of their emotions because they will be receive a negative reaction from EVERYBODY in their lives. If you share with male friends, you're a pussy. If you share with female friends, you're behaving "weird." If you share with a significant other, then you will likely have to support HER emotional needs because your suffering is making her feel bad. As a result, we just carry emotional trauma around with us. Until we just... can't anymore. And at that point, how women feel about our emotional state just ceases to matter. It's akin to deciding that a certain group of people somehow aren't naturally as good at running marathons and ignoring the fact that they're confined to a tiny box all day. You can't compare if it's never been fair.

But this is also why the best relationships have open lines of communication. If you really love someone, then you aren't going to judge them for having a bad day, or struggling with something, and you aren't going to make the bad day or the struggle into a competition either.

See, let's presume both go +1 in maturity equally fast. Once she reaches her level cap at 60 (exceptions going beyond that do not make the rule), he's only at 50% of his, mandated by cuckmalesacrificialciety, level 120 cap, the top level which will be increased with the next "vidya game addon" to 150.

From lvl 60 onwards he's expected to tank, heal and mage each at at least lvl 80 each. That depends on what you mean by mature. IME teenage boys and adult men are still into video games and when I check hobby spaces theres no shortage of adult men still into comic books and action figures anf amusement parks. If you're checking surface level stuff it looks that way.

But in my experience a large portion of women have really bad emotional regulation well into their 20's because the social consequence for them doing so is much less and they often don't really have the social skills to effectivley communicate their wabts or needs. I think wjen it comes to having a kind of naive outlook on life there are more women than men and when it cimes to being able to handle yourself internally there are many women that obviously struggle.

Maturity isn't always just about how you act in public, it's also how you carry yourself and the things in life you value, identify, and understand.

Many young girls grow up understanding a lot more of the harsher realities of life than boys whether it's due to minor or major traumas placed on them by older people, and even if they don't experience them first-hand they'll see or hear of them happening through friends or family. Because of this I think most girls and women are forced into a more mature and brutal world than boys and men understand.

Here's actually a really great example (although anecdotal) - I'm 32 and my gf (31) just told me last night that her and her highschool friends (all women) had a long talk last night about all the men from their high school that they grew up with that accosted, assaulted, or did worse to girls they knew. They all already knew about most of them, but a few of them were news to people.

As a guy who never either deliberately or accidentally harmed or accosted a girl growing up this kind of experience was something I knew happened somewhere but I'm constantly reminded how common these instances are, to the point where girls must have all known who in our school was capable of such things and who they've already done them to.

Growing up I knew that some boys and men hurt women but I'd never seen it, experienced it, or even really heard about specific instances. Or maybe I just never fully registered when it happened near me. There would be parties when two incredibly drunk people stumble in a room together but we never heard what happened or how, most of us guys just forgot about it.

For my girlfriend she not only knew (and grew up with) boys who did horrible things to women but also knew multiple women that were made into victims by these young boys. When two drunk people stumbled into a bedroom their hairs must have stood up.

This is obviously anecdotal, and second-hand, so this may not be indicative of why most girls grow up faster than boys... but I think it's a good reason to start asking more women in our lives about why they did grow up faster than us because the answer might not be as simple or innocent as being taught to cook or clean or babysit at a young age.

Both men and women hit their top reproductive years in the mid 20’s - early 30s. While women’s ovulating decreases, so does men’s testosterone and sperm count/quality. Even though a man continues to ejaculate into his middle aging, his sperm quality decreases.

Both men AND women’s metabolism starts to decrease in their 30s, they both start to gain weight and be deficient energy wise.

I heard this and believed it to be true so focused on dating women 4-5 years older than me expecting to deal with less bullshit and springboard my own life with some maturity and learning quickly.

The answer is no, and you’re better off getting a 20 year old and showing her the ropes yourself so she learns how to navigate life than getting a 30 year old know it all who’s a disaster who can’t even write checks.

the one thing ive always agreed with that schopenhauer essay about is that i think women would find it intolerable to have spent their lives with children if they matured too much in their childbrearing years. they mature rapidly to the point they can be responsible for babies, but stop at a childlike enouhg level to tolerate the company of and play with children. they resume maturing in middle age on

No we mature at the same rate. All of my guy friends who were the same age as me had the same maturity level too. Most people of both genders aren’t mature until mid 20s at least.

Yes in the sense that they mature quicker ie when they are in high school - just see how boys and girls act - but also note how boys and girls are TREATED. There’s science that explains it biologically as well. As in they can have and are capable of raising children by 16. Most 16 year old boys are not at that level of “maturity”.

But the difference between an 18 year old girl and a 23 year old girl, while probably HUGE, is still WAY different than a 33 year old woman and not much different from a 18 - 23 year old man. also on the 18-23(or 25) age range…a lot of these women who are “mature for their age” are really just great actresses. If you’re older and have dated younger “mature” women you know this from experience. Their immaturity and inexperience eventually rears its ugly head.

I think the way society handles men & women impacts their timeline of growth. Certain external markers are social cues of maturity, which for women can be broken down to the formation of breasts or ability to bear children, and for men can be broken down to the ability to financially or materially provide for a woman that’s of child-bearing maturity. I mean of course that’s over simplifying it, but that’s generally how it works.

A woman has “matured” by 21, she is ready to be wed, bear children, and raise a family. Whereas a man is “matured” by 25-35 (when he has a suitable career, maybe some land, or the ability to provide).

But modern dating & feminism has changed this. In a way they have pushed for women’s intellectual [& experiential] maturity in saying women should have a job, be able to provide, be educated, vote, etc…so many women are moving into traditionally masculine roles. Which pushes the level of men’s required “maturity” even higher since really what society equates with maturity is resources and provision-ability.

Anyways, nowadays 20-30 years old is probably the same as 15-25 was 100 years ago

Women do mature faster, but men mature farther on average. Women peak around 30, men around 40. By 50 there's a huge disparity in favor of men. These are just general numbers obviously and they vary slightly, but that's typically how it goes.

No that’s just a thing that comes from us men being more “immature” when it comes to the things we enjoy. Subs like why women live longer are an example of this. I’d argue that has little to do with maturity and more to do with having a sillier sense of humor/excitement. I don’t think laughing at farts or other goofy stuff Is immature. My friends and I still laugh at dumb things, so occasionally dumb things, and all have good jobs and are “mature” in the ways that matter.

I’d argue that those “immature” things are what make guys way more fun to be around.

Women get more experience quicker than men do. The world takes them and molds them very young. So yes, it will make it seem that they are more mature. Sexually, in their career, socially etc….their value is front loaded. I don’t even think men are really “men” until they’re 30. By that age, most women are done. At least with their prime/biologically. I’ve seen a lot of women’s bodies. The difference between 20 and 30 is usually very stark. No comparison usually. Men? It’s hard to tell 21 from 30 in a lot of cases, if the fitness is kept up. We just don’t age as fast. Even really hot, well kept up 30 year old women have rough hands, stretch marks, wrinkles and lines. It’s apparent when you really look at them. It’s just reality.

That’s the way I’ve always seen it.

Female peak form is good 10+ years earlier. I think men get peak fertility mid 30s.
