A big disconnect I am seeing from my own personal experience is how women online claim that it's a universal female experience to be incessantly catcalled and harassed ever since they were a little kid, and that this type of sexual attention was what first made them despise male sexuality. However, thinking back to my own experiences growing up, I simply can't fathom how this can be anything close to reality.

As a thought experiment, I thought about how my childhood/adolescence would be different if I were born female, and I just can't see how I would've experienced harassment/catcalling, simply because there were no opportunities for it to happen. I grew up in a middle-class suburb (with a large Asian diaspora presence, something like 30-40%), and I've never witnessed anything even resembling creepy behavior by a pedestrian or driver on the street.

Even then, I was hardly out on the street at all- when I wasn't at school I was either at some extracurricular or in my house/backyard, and the only time I was out on the streets was when I was riding my bike or walking home from school (but if I was female my parents would've accompanied me, as they did for my sister). At school, I've never witnessed or heard about a single incidence of sexual harassment, and even among boys I never heard anyone talk about girls in the stereotypical crass, demeaning way. At my extracurriculars/sports practices/activities, this was also the case.

So, in the hypothetical where I was born female, I simply couldn't see how I could possibly experience catcalling/harassment at all, let alone frequently or even constantly. I actually asked my 15-year old sister about this once (who's objectively above average in looks and much more social than I am), and even she said that she's never once been catcalled or sexually harassed.

So I'm really curious about this "universal female experience" that doesn't align at all with my experience growing up, which I assume is pretty typical. If you're a normal, middle-class woman who grew up in a decent suburb, how exactly did you experience constant catcalling and harassment in your childhood?

(Keep in mind, I'm not asking for the experiences of women who grew up in urban areas where you come into constant contact with homeless people and ghetto construction workers. That's obvious.)
