Sometimes...like as women we tend to be economically at a disadvantage, as immigrants we have to start new in the united states a country, that yes has the wealth and opportunities here however, doesn’t always want us. Something else I didn'r see mentioned is that in my area of the US most houses & even apartments have a washer/dryer. Going to a laundromat in the first place implies lower socio-economic status. (Or that you are washing something like a king sized comforter than requires an industrial sized machine. Which would bode even worse in the poor girl's case because the guy would've been blowing her off with the excuse of a twice annual chore!)

And laundromats here tend to be sketchy af & not places you'd want to hang out! The one in our old town I didn't mind going to with bedding because it was clean & fairly quiet. But the sweet grad student who babysat my kids when they were little lived in the rural city 10 miles away that was the meth-capitol of the south. She once sheepishly asked if she could pay to use our washer/dryer after some crazy dudes scared her at the laundromat there. I told her she didn't owe me a thing & could do as many loads as she needed.

Eta: I realize this is largely geographical & that there are "nice" laundromats in big cities. Still...
