Indifferent but leaning unattractive not so much the tech and computers but the collecting toys. I think it would depend whether he spent much time playing with the toys as opposed to collecting them for some other perceived value such as resale or to trade them. Even then I wouldn’t want to see that shit displayed around my house. And I also don’t like hoarders.

I play mtg and just made my first dnd character. I play video games. Nerds are great. Only a problem when passions and interests become obsessive and all consuming. Is he obsessive about the action figures? Like, does he always buy 3? Play, own, sell? Is his entire house covered in cardboard cutouts? Or is he just a guy who likes “nerdy” things.

I prefer nerdy guys. It's cute when a guy is passionate about nerdy stuff. I love hearing a guy yap about his interests. My fiance is a huge nerd about science fiction.

As long as he still enjoys being social/doing things outside of the house occasionally too. I like hiking, camping etc and I like being able to do that stuff with my partner too.

It can be. There's nuance to it, and it really depends on the comorbid traits.

I've dated nerds and my family of origin leans nerdy. I suppose I'm nerdy in a way.

Being knowledgeable can show competency, but it depends on the area of knowledge. Being knowledgeable about things that demonstrate social competency is hot. If you're knowledgeable about Dragon Ball Z lore that might nerf your appeal. If you're knowledgeable about history, architecture, or other less niche areas that translate to real-world engagement that might help. Being knowledgeable about cars can appealingly coexist with having an autistic level of knowledge about car history. If you have a mix of esoteric nerdiness and practical/social nerdiness you'll still have some appeal to a good number of women.

But if you're an arrogant nerd, a mansplaining or condescending nerd, an egotistical nerd, etc. you're going to have a hard time. Nerdiness works best when complemented by sociability, like most things. Yes, physically attractive nerds will be able to have a broader appeal like anyone who is physically attractive, but that still doesn't mean nerdiness as a trait in and of itself is an automatic panty-drier.

If you'd describe yourself as "I'm a giant nerd" "I'm a big nerd" or just "I'm nerdy," that presents it as the central or integral aspect of your personality and I think normally for guys who describe themselves as such it is usually those more esoteric nerdy interests. Yes, women into those things certainly exist and certain nerdy interests have gained a more mainstream appeal but there's still going to be a gender discrepancy. So for those guys then yes, probably going to limit your dating pool unless it's balanced out by more relatable or masculine qualities.

Tl;dr a nerdiness as a personality trait can have broad appeal. Nerdiness as a personality core not so much.

I’ve only dated nerds, I’m a nerd, I would not mesh well with a non nerd.

But I know a lot of women who would find nerdy behavior cringy or not get it, it just depends on the woman.

Here's the problem with nerdy guys which they dont like to talk about.

Alot of them never learnt social skills and dont try to.
Vulnerable Narcissism + Roleplaying as some manly protagonist handling a harsh world.
Many are not as kind as they think they are. There's a reason conventions had to say "COSPLAY IS NOT CONSENT"

The issue isn't the nerdy interests. The issue is understanding being a nerd doesn't automatically make someone a sweet underdog.

But he likes collecting Star Wars, Alien, those types of action figures.

Even then, where does he put it? Does he spend all his money collecting? Is that his ONLY passion? You say he checks all the boxes but do you mean it literally all the green flags?

I am mostly indifferent, it doesn't do anything for me, but it's also not a turn off. If he's into tech (and here I mean, not just into the latest gadgets, but he is a software or firmware engineer or something who is actually knowledgeable), that's respectable and a man being knowledgeable can be a turn on in some ways.

But a man being into anime, having anime posters, female anime pillows, etc. is a turn off. But that's nerdy in a different flavor.

For me, it’s only a turn off if that’s the ONLY thing he’s interested in. If it’s a hobby he enjoys cool, but if this all he does yeah I’m not into that.

But, it’s kind of the same way with men and women. If you meet a woman and she’s only into tik tok, makeup and love island, it’s a turn off. But if she does it sometimes it’s ok.

For me it’s less his activities and interests. It’s his vibe, presence, mentality, comportment, and style. The latter I have to find attractive, regardless of the former.

If the latter lacks, I won’t be as easily turned on, all else equal.

As a nerdy woman who dates primarily nerds (specifically gamers) it depends on the type of nerd.

Nerdy men that are well groomed, in shape, employed with a career, good social skills, go outside etc. are a huge turn on and the types of men I tend to date.

Nerdy men with terrible grooming, out of shape (usually overweight or skinnyfat), NEETS, autists, poor social skills, porn addicts, don’t touch grass, etc. are a turn off.

Unfortunately the problem with a majority of nerdy men is they tend to trend towards the 2nd undesirable type and then cry that women don’t find their social retardation and lack of effort on anything that isn’t their hyper-fixation attractive.

If he keeps the collection to one room that he is responsible for cleaning and maintains it. If he is responsibly expands his collection (not using the money that has been saved to replace the 20 years old roof or is reserved for rent and bills). If he is able to interact with people without needing to talk about his collection.

I don't care what a guy's hobbies are unless they are actively harmful in some way. Like, if you're in massive amounts of debt because of your hobbies, or you don't have any friends because you only spend time on your hobbies, then that would be a turn off.

Some people find collecting toys, or things that resemble toys is childish and a turn off. Some don't care. And people with the same hobbies will find it a plus.

Do you want to date a non-nerd? Some won't care at all. Depending on the woman, you will need to hide some of your interests and live a sad half-life in which you resent Stacy for blunting your authentic self.

(Edit: I would reject you for being a basic nerd but not for being a nerd by itself. Western toy-like action figures would also give me pause unless they were displayed in an appealing way. I personally would judge non-creepy non-basic waifu figures much less, but I also like anime.)

I'm far more likely to date a nerd. (Of course, I'm a CS and robotics prof.)

If we were looking into sharing living space - not a given even for a serious relationship with me - we'd have to come up with some kind of mutual understanding around decorating (I'm flexible, but left to my own devices I avoid merch in public spaces) and possibly some stuff about where video games are played.

My big issue with the video games was an ex who insisted on a) setting up a desk in front of the main living room sofa in a way that made it unusable to anyone else b) playing game incessantly in that space and c) having sound on. My annoyance would have been reduced by 70% if he would have just worn earn buds.

Especially annoying because he had the second nicest bedroom for his office (this nicest was the master that we shared).

Of course, maybe 40% of the male nerds I've dated* have eventually been hostile regarding my own technical proficiency, so sometimes the question is how comfortable will a nerd really be dating me?

No, it doesn't really matter to me, although within reason. If it's bordering on obsession or addiction, that might just make me wanna run away. But I mean I like some video games and action movies more commonly enjoyed by men, so there's some potential for it to be an interest we actually have in common, just probably I won't be as intense about it.

But that's fine, I have some hobbies I can get nerdy about too, like sewing, embroidery, playing piano, and whatnot, and I don't expect a boyfriend to be super into those same things, or to the same degree as I am.

So as long as his nerdiness doesn't negatively impact his health or ability to be even just bare minimum social, and maybe also as long as it's not something I absolutely hate (like I do have a hard time connecting with men who are very into sports, gambling, or some hyper specific politics, for example) I wouldn't consider it an issue. So I guess it depends a little on what it is he's being nerdy about.

Being into nerd things doesn't tell me much. I've met nerdy guys who were great partners.

I met nerdy guys who ended up divorced because he kept complaining that taking care of their newborn cut into their gaming time (ignoring that the mother had no hobby time). All woe is me, I don't get a break to decompress. Ah well, at least she divorced him early and got out.

And as a gamer myself, a gamer that had his priorities in line, wouldn’t be too bad, but I don’t think I could ever date a full time gamer. Casual is fine.
And I don’t think I could ever date someone who went to comic cons all the time and dressed up. Don’t know why, I just am not attracted to it. But again, depends on the woman, women aren’t cut and dry.

Though I am picky with the kind of nerdy: niche interests/hobbies like re-enactment/cosplay/ww2/wood working, card games, board games, rpg, gaming, etc are all great. I’m not a nerd, nerds don’t like me at all, and I usually don’t like them either. I’m highly social and main stream and I like my life like that. Nerds often don’t like my hugely fun social life and going out being around lots of people. I’ve tried dating nerds and they’re completely uninterested in my life so I gave that up and I’m not usually interested in their hobbies.
