Here's my conspiracy theory; We went from 3 billion humans in 1960 to 8+billions today. Along the way we chopped down ancient forests, extracted the minerals that were accessible, over-farmed/ fertilized fields (and created things like the dust bowl in the 30's), killed off wild game, depleted wild fisheries, lowered ancient aquifers, etc, exploited natural resources until they became endangered, scarce, or polluted. And now what is the greatest resource left to exploit to support the lifestyles to which we've become accustomed? Each other.

In another thread people were lecturing me about how the western world will be more dependent on immigration. Isnt' it like that already? I'm not sure how it is elsewhere, but in the U.S. it's sort of understood that we are dependent on cheap labor from immigration in many low paying , back breaking industries, like farm labor, and many others.

The conspiracy part; the low birth rate is mankind (at least in the west) reading the writing on the wall that there's little left to exploit at this point except human capital.

edit: but it's not the end! It's just a recalibration.

It's the prisoners dilema.

Without an external system which creates insurances against non-cooperation, both players will base their decisions on what yields the best results (subjectively). Even if most players are by default cooperative, they will eventually stop, when faced with too many defeats.

People will only be cooperative as long as cooperation is at least as likely to yield good results as non-cooperation. Most people still want to cooperate, but the faith in that working out is decreasing rapidly. Right now things seem pretty bleak, because we don't have any mechanisms of repairing faith in cooperative behavior.

I’m not as cynical but I do feel that the “problem” is OURSELVES not “tHE eConOmY”

Am basically seeing that the majority of couples under 30 (well maybe around half by age 30) are all “one foot in one foot out” type deals. I see way less PDA than I did just before Covid. People today are too cynical to enjoy themselves. They are constantly presuming the worse, responds to conflict by being two faced (lots of fake appeasing while they form their personal opinions on their own), and there is a horrific amount of possessive behavior that everyone tries to keep plausible deniability. And women who are coupled are still constantly assessing the level of men who give them attention, which is almost correlated with how possessive or naive their bf is.

Society is nowhere near finished. We just see more discontent people online venting about it/and the problem is exaggerated somewhat.

The reality is that the world will always keep spinning barring a catastrophe and that individual lives don’t really prevent the world from continuing to go round and round.

As a lonely/discontent guy myself, I’ve realized that even though I’m not content, that it is not a society wide issue and that if something happened to me/I was no longer around there would obviously be no effect on much of anything/anyone. Individuals are pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

I find it somewhat sad but also freeing as if I fail to live up to expectations most people if not everyone won’t remember me anyway. But no, society is definitely not finished lol.

Ignoring your religious ramblings, I'd say the current state of events are a threat to the big boys owning everything. Capitalism suffers when population goes down. Other than that, by almost all aspects, humans are having it quite well in the developed world. Yes, in unevolved areas, humans are struggling, but then again, those are places where women are used and sold to men to forcefully marry and bare kids over and over. They are not treated like humans, nor have rights or protection.

There's a bit of a disconnect between men and women today? If one was truly aware of historical timeline, this wouldn't have been a surprise. Now, women can actually act on their fears. They have the means to live how they wish. There is no longer a leash and collar around their necks. This is merely a result of action-reaction effect, and also, dating apps are toxic and do not help much. I for one do not understand how a woman has the courage to respond to DMs and actually meet strangers off the internet. To me, that's unreal. And yes, this is another reaction of fear. Not blind hate...but fear.

Bit of an exaggeration, I feel like. Personally, I think the rift's just due to the fact that times have changed. Women have rightfully moved on from needing to rely on men. We just haven't done the same. Women still occupy the same frame of importance to us that they've held since, like, forever. Now we've just sprinkled some basic human respect onto the relationship.

This has sort of created this weird imbalance. One that I can't imagine being fixed until we sort of reevaluate the male identity and sort of 'dethrone' the female identity, for lack of a better word, in our own heads.

A number of things are going on. One, things always look worse on Reddit. Two, too much unbridled neoliberal capitalism since Reagan. Led to the GFC. Fucked up housing and working class jobs for men. Three, women have been angry with men for a long time, over patriarchy, rape culture, etc, and are now able to take their anger out on us. Four, this is all going on with the backdrop of an unaccountable oligarchy and a runaway climate crisis. So this is a deeply traumatized society and the genders are scapegoating each other.

It depends on what you mean by our society. I see this as a self-correcting issue-if only religious people are reproducing above replacement politicians will increasingly cater to this ever growing group and society as a whole will become more religious. I for one would prefer countries to enact policies to encourage the birthrate-de-urbanization, more affordable housing for young people, a more streamlined and less debt inducing educational system, and more palatable hours. However, when you look at countries like Japan and Italy, who have dealt with this issue unsuccessfully for decades, it seems somewhat unlikely.
