While it’s true that dating gives you more experience even if it doesn’t work out in the long run, I don’t think it’s good advice to get into relationships with people you DON’T WANT to date or that you know won’t work out.

All that will give you is experience with a partner that you don’t want, who probably is also unhappy because they aren’t getting all the warm liminal positive vibes that usually come with being in a new relationship. So it’s a recipe for resentment.

It’s so gonna screw up the women you’re dating. Like… men really need to stop complaining about women having relationships prior to them if they’re also doing everything they can to KEEP women in relationships even when they don’t want them.

On top of that, if you DO meet a woman you like and click with, you are already in a relationship with a woman you DON’T want so you wouldn’t even be available to date someone you DO want.

Bad plan all around.

There is nothing wrong with short term relationships, especially if you both agree to that is what it is and both of yall like each other in that way. However, your post seems to heavily imply getting with any woman (even if you don’t really like her), getting close to her and just using her as a practice board until someone better comes along…. which is a shitty thing to do another person.

I'd argue it's more beneficial for these types of men to bite the bullet and increase their social time irl, not on an app, by connecting with as many women who they at least like or are attracted to. Giving inexperienced, low socially skilled men this kind of advice can easily make them fall down the rabbit hole of being a player.

On top of this being cruel, this is a terrible way to gain experience. This is like telling someone to get 20 different jobs. You’ll pick up some skills but ultimately you’ve mastered absolutely nothing.

Also, if you’re going into these relationships you have to practice being a good partner. You won’t be able to do that since you’d be only pretending to like these women. Most humans can figure out that someone doesn’t like them, less “attractive” women especially have their guards up.

Deliberately going for "practice girlfriend" is a bad idea on many levels. But your first relationships have a really big chance to fail because you have no idea what you want or what you're doing. So you can see it as "practice" and not take it too serious. In general it's a good idea not to take relationships too serious.

I’m a girl, and I unironically thought about getting a practice boyfriend on a few occasions. My idea of a practice partner is completely different from yours, though. This person would need to be someone I could potentially see myself with. They would need to be someone I could also be friends with and feel safe around. My ideal PB would be someone who has as little experience as me. We could experiment, explore each other, and learn together. They need to be someone who isn’t afraid to laugh at themselves or be silly together.

The only reason I called it a practice partner is because I want someone who has as little experience as me and because this relationship doesn’t necessarily mean anything long-term. It could lead to something long-term, but that’s not the goal. Of course, I would never lead them on or lie to them. In my ideal situation, it’s something we both are looking for, and it just comes naturally. I decided against it because it’s probably way easier to just get a normal boyfriend, lol.

I have a personal experience that shines some light of this, but I more or less agree.

I didn’t get my girlfriend until I was 28. I wasn’t a virgin, but had a fairly limited success with women overall. If you looked at me, you certainly wouldn’t think I was a player, but I’m guessing you’d think I had more experience than I did at that age. My main reason for my failures was lack of confidence I think.

Then I met a girl who was by all account a great fit on paper. Pretty, well educated, seemed to share my values, I finally got the stones to ask her out, she quickly showed interest and we began to date. I can’t express how amazing it finally felt to get the no girlfriend monkey off my chest.

It wasn’t until about 5 months into dating, when I realized she really didn’t fit what I was looking into a life partner. By this point we had already met each other’s families and said I love you. However, it was then that I realized she was VERY high maintenance neurotic. I expressed my concerns to her, and while she promised she would improve she never really got better.

Over the next year we continued to date, but the feeling that she wasn’t the one never went away. Our sex life dropped considerably, but never hit a dead bedroom. I knew we still cared about each other, but I always wanted the first few months of the honeymoon phase to return, they never did. Despite this there were still some good times. I often considered ending the relationship, but was too much of a chicken to end it.

Finally after a year and a half while we were heavily discussing moving in together, yet fighting a lot, she decided to end it.

Thank god! While I was sad to see the relationship end, I knew in my heart she was doing what I was too scared to do.

We parted on amicable enough terms and I say this in all sincerity, I don’t love her anymore, but I do wish her well in life. I needed this experience of a failed relationship, to develop red flags, and gain a better understanding of the values I want in a partner. I’m glad the relationship lasted as long as I did, because it is what I needed to learn about myself. I could be wrong, but I think she feels similarly.

So yeah make mistakes with wrong girl so when the right one comes along you’ll be ready.

Yeah, I can assure you that there is a lot of folk that can look back on their dating history and think of at least one person that with the wisdom of hindsight they should have passed on. That experience however also probably (with a bit of luck) gave them the experience to know what to avoid in the future.

It’s easy to spin it negatively or try to get a bit of outrage going, but truth be known there is probably a bit of learning going on for both sides of the coin. The world is full of diverse people driven by a range of motivations, gaining life experience requires resilience and self reflection.

While you are feeling a bit proud for being “extra sneaky or self serving”, chances are you will look back and realise the big angst was all in your head. Unless you are basically unpleasant or for some reason make engaging with you a negative experience, chances are you will just be a semi pleasant or neutral memory on their own life journey where they are also growing and learning. You know, you will be that boy they met for a couple of months in 2024.

Don’t be an unpleasant experience and you will find that it’s actually nice to be part of someone’s life, even if it’s only briefly…
