I don't know what men mean when they say "women don't take responsibility" or "you need to take responsibility".

What, specifically, is "responsibility"?

For instance, when men say victims of crimes are also responsible for not protecting themselves, what, *specifically* does that mean?

-- Does it mean the perpetrator shouldn't be punished or should be punished less harshly?

-- Does it mean people should shame the victim?

If someone is a victim of a crime, aren't they already "taking responsibility" because it is inescapable? They have to deal w the trauma of whatever that person did to them. Those effects the victim has to deal with can be really serious in a way that is measured and confirmed by medical doctors.

Another example: a woman has sex with a man, after he pursued her. After sleeping with him, she realized that he did not have feelings for her and only wanted sex, while she was interested in him and had sex with him as a physical display of affection, because she liked him.

I've heard men say that her being hurt is wrong and she needs to "take responsibility".

This seems like an appropriate time to feel hurt? She should use that hurt to understand what happened and not assume that she can be physically affectionate with someone and if they respond, it automatically means they feel the same way. She should use the hurt to understand she needs to get commitment before she is sexual or she will continue to experience this again and again.

This is normal life trial and error. I don't understand how this person is eschewing "responsibility" or what that "responsibility" is?

What else do you feel they need to be doing?

I'm asking this because in a lot of situations where this phrase is used, it seems people are confusing “taking responsibility” with “agreeing with me”.

If someone disagrees that what they did is wrong (for example, having sex with men) then there is nothing they need to take responsibility for? (Maybe I have it wrong but I assume the person means "take responsibility for doing something wrong" or being immoral, which is not what the woman did, at all).

That woman is already responsible for living her life according to her values. She is responsible for a pregnancy or STI if either occurs. She is responsible for not being cruel to her partner while he is vulnerable with her. She is already doing all of those things.

What else do you need her to be responsible for?

Is it that you believe she needs to be "responsible" for you personal beliefs that her actions make her less valuable to you? She doesn’t even know you. Why is she responsible for *your* beliefs?
