IMO being a feminist, or any kind of activist, means actively doing something.

I don't. I just live my own life. I agree with the basic tenants of feminism but that doesn't make me a feminist.

I do identify as a feminist, but I also identify myself egalitarian, because feminism on its own is about women's rights. It doesn't address gendered issues that men face. Feminism also struggles with women hiding their misandry under the label of feminism, and it puts some people off from the movement, so I can see why a lot of people supporting gender equality wouldn't call themselves feminists.

From the other hand, I think a good share of people uses the label too lightly. If you support gender equality as an idea, but you don't really do anything to push for it - and you don't vote for it, why do you use the label you do not contribute to?

It's an advocacy movement for women. In theory, there's nothing wrong with that, but it claims to be about "equality" and to be for everyone to be able to suppress any attempt at advocating for men or at bringing up men's issues.

I think the word feminism has been stolen by some crazy activists who are trying to justify their viewpoints with a label that originally carried soundness and positive connotation. One of the issues in that kind of question is the clarification of the difference between humanist, egalitarian, and feminist. Feminism is specifically a movement about freeing women from oppression based on their female sex or woman gender (depending on the feminist). Most people aren't rights' fighters. They may think female oppression is yucky, but they don't actually care enough to think about what female oppression actually is. It's kinda like how you wouldn't call yourself an animal rights activist solely because you think dog fighting rings are yucky.

I have a super complicated relationship with feminism.

I grew up with two sisters and a mom who are feminists and my mom had this idea that she would raise me to not be like those bad guys. Basically lots of trashing men and masculinity, male sexuality etc. Whenever she discovered I watched porn she got into these fits of rage and got violent. At school there was some teachers who were a bit similar who used public shaming of guys to teach us how bad porn was. Also in biology in sex ed everyone had to watch anti porn documentaries.

I shaped myself around what these women said they wanted in men which is like the caricature of a liberal man. No strength or fitness as that’s gym bro patriarchal oppression and sort of violence culture, not sexually forward in any kind of way and not pursue money, only peace and none violence. Of course I struggled massively with dating and I was 25 when I lost my virginity. Still not sure how it happened. I became a total door mat and a perfect nice guy.

I started doing therapy after 30 when metoo happened because I got so triggered. Like I had a mental breakdown without knowing why. Gradually I unpacked everything I had been through, all the gaslighting and all the bullying (male bashing) which I had internalized. I started to really hate women.

I’m still in this state in many ways even though I have cooled off a bit. I have had sex like five times in my life as a 40 yo. No kids and never had a girlfriend. I still freeze up around women as my brain just does not know how to behave or what to do. I function normally as a colleague but romantically and sexually in fucked up.

I got a sex doll at 35 as I got so frustrated. I wanted to fill out that loneliness hole in my heart with something plus I wanted to eject all the internalized shame and self hatred for being a man.

So in many ways I still function as a “good feminist man” in that I’m unable to sexually harass women in any kind of way. I’m also not rich or violent etc. At the same time I have an existential hatred of feminists and women in general. I also hate myself for not being able to change my personality and life even though I know what I learned when I was young was wrong.

So yea I will never have kids, sex or family. I will die alone and I’m chronically depressed. I hate myself family and myself.

Am I feminist? Maybe.. but it’s more of a trauma imprint and not something I chose to be or want to be.

And before you say how horrible people these people are, these people are normal and healthy. It’s just that sometimes what is good for women is not good for boys and men. I’m just a sad unintended side effect of a social movement. I think the group I can most closely relate to online are people who grew up in very religious communities with lots of brain washing around sexuality, we are damaged in the same kind of ways.

I know for sure a lot of men who are raised by feminist moms will grow up traumatized like me. Perhaps they will meet someone or manage to self correct somehow.

I live in Sweden if that matters.

When you ask people different things they give different answers. It has never been demonstrated or explained how shooting Andy Warhol in the heart contributed to equality of anything. Not a feminist, and I'm against equality. Inb4 "why": the idea of "equality" stems from universalist religious belief that all people are created in god's image and deserve a fair chance at reaching salvation. Since religion is a lie, god does not exist, and judgement day is not coming, the idea is baseless on the face of it. People should not be "equal under the (criminal) law" either: those who have power and choose to abuse it deserve harsher punishment than people who caused similar level of harm, because people in power abusing their power make greater violation of trust than a powerless person committing a crime. Finally, I believe that freedom of association cannot be sacrificed for the sake of "equality" - which means I believe it's wrong and evil to force people to teach, heal, employ, or cooperate with people they don't like, which means I also don't believe in "equality" under civil law.

I used to because I treated it more like a general identity than a political identity. Feminism isnt just vaguely agreeing with the movement and its principles, its being principled and changing ones lifestyle not only according to the political tenets but to actually do activism and studying, criticizing, and developing feminist theory.

The most 'activism' I was doing at the time was resharing posts and engaging in debates and discussions online. Well, thats not useless in this digital age but it certainly didnt feel like feminist activism and I stopped using the label since to respect the label.

If I were more active in womens spaces and lands, dedicated more of my art more as feminist, and engaged in more feminist theory, Id readopt the label. Im already planning to read more old school radfem books by feminists like Dines and Dworkin. Most Ive read are long feminist articles.

I think if people took feminism more seriously and also realized its much more than a personal label, being opinionated, or myths about misandry, then theyd be more willing to adopt the label or at lesst not flinch in anger or annoyance when they hear it lol. Also if women had more time and less stress to organize i feel like they would.

I didn't use to, it grew on me over the years.

I find it troublesome that many things are collected under the umbrella of feminism.

One of the biggest problem is shamey and exclusionary culture, with cancelations and no path to redemption.

Another problem is not being willing to even entertain certain subjects, like biological differences between the sexes cognitively, girls developing faster than boys, female privilege and toxic femininity, health problems obesity carries with it, risk vs benefit analysis of allowing kids to transition, negative impacts of promiscuity, things like that. I am not in a conservative camp on any of these subjects, far from it, but on the feminist left there's only one correct opinion to have on these kinds of things, and everything else is shunned. Not by everyone, but by the zeitgeist.

Another problem is I think we're underseving men. Even when we try to help them, and I think feminists are trying to help, I feel like we're failing to resonate with them and attract them to our ideas. I don't think feminist analysis is wrong on toxic masculinity, but a lot of men feel like it fails to understand and acknowledge their struggles, like it demonizes them, and like it doesn't help them. And we blame and shame them for not being helped by our efforts, instead of trying to listen and modify our approach to suit them more and focus on issues they care about in relation to gender.

And last problem I'll note and a big pet peeve of mine is that a lot of feminism kind of ends up lifting up little girls and women who're already privileged, educated, in big cities, egalitarian families, etc. rather than bettering the situation of women in rural religious communities, poverty, developing countries and the third world, etc. A lot of energy and finance goes to communities that need it least. (Not all, I'm always happy to see exceptions to this.) This is often an issue of capitalism, aka companies sponsoring events for women they want to attract as employees, so those who're already in a position to build themselves up to work for them, just need a little nudge.

But I used to focus on these problems and ignore all the good feminists are doing in the world. I do think misogyny is culturally still a big problem. And I do think I should use the label according to its definition and just explain what my own feminism entails. And that's equality between the sexes, including expanding gender roles. Women are now allowed to be masculine more, but femininity is still undervalued and they kind of have to choose. Men's gender role did not expand as much and they're more rigidly being held to the same standards. I don't think we'll ever have a post-gender society because we're separated by biological reality of pregnancy and fertility, but we can carve out more room for individuality and freedom, while trying for everyone's needs to be fulfilled as much as possible without violating other's rights.

The term "feminist" have a lot of baggage and assumptions. There also may be expectations one should take and not taking it makes one against feminism. Identifying with any group basically restricts your freedom to think on your own because you are expected to follow every ideals that certain group has in order to be one of them. It's better not to identify as one while still agreeing with feminism for the most part especially the equality part. The same logic apply to things like religion.

Should women be able to vote get a job open a bank account yes. I don't identify as a feminist, but yes I do think some level of social and legal gender equality should be upheld. Wanting equality and being a feminist is not the same thing. Someone who wants equality prioritizes both genders, and tries to find solutions to both male issues and female issues, preferably without trampling on either to achieve betterment for one.

There are people who know sexism exists, but don't think women are always the most oppressed in every aspect of life. And who don't think men's oppression (if we've gotta run with that sorta wording) is entirely the fault of the so-called patriarchy. Among people who want gender equality, there are feminists, egalitarians, and men's rights activists, which all have a different world view, and thus different ideas on how to achieve equality.

As for myself, I don't really fare well in feminist spaces because I 1) critize the blind belief in the all mighty patriarchy, 2) don't blame men for every ill women experience, 3) don't hyperfocus on just women's struggles, and 4) don't think DEI and similar forms of equity actually takes us anywhere near actual gender equality, but rather further away from it. I just get called a misogynist, because I can't possibly be against sexism without also believing in the idea that patriarchy is the only oppressive gender related force out there, and that misandry is a laughing matter. Except... I can. Feminism seems to have some kinda messiah complex, in thinking it has monopoly on equality. I get it, it's easy to paint all non-feminist as morally backwards.

And I think this is generally why a lot of other people aren't feminist either. Although I'm sure their opinions on this may differ from mine to some extent or another. It's not that non-feminists are all misogynist like we keep being told, it's that feminism has a world view that most people think is incorrect, and methods that most people don't think helps achieve equality.

I don't identify as a feminist in my own head bc I don't think the label fits me just right. But for all intents and purposes I understand I would be labeled as a feminist by someone/anyone else.

Feminisms stated goal is equality of the sexes and I don't really care about equality, I care about men but I dearly and deeply care about women. I care about their safety, freedom, rights etc.

I love and adore men like I love and adore cows or whales they are cool and I want good for them but if I had established feminism I wouldn't use the only movement protecting and empowering women to also care about men, cows, whales etc.

Men have patriarchy and Men's rights Activism looking after their needs and wants and also feminism while women only have feminism looking after their needs and wants.

I think women's rights Activism fit me much more genuinely although I do love feminism and am grateful for all it's done on behalf of women.

One of the foundational beliefs of feminism is that men are the oppressor class, a force that has tormented and enslaved women since time immemorial.

Whatever else it has said and done, this is an insanely anti male belief and it poisons the way anyone who holds it sees the men and boys in their lives.

I don't think all feminists hate men, but every last one I've come across has held at least some negative viewpoint of men, it just expresses itself in different ways.

I'm actually of the firm belief that anyone who believes in the "male oppressor/female oppressed" dynamic is incapable of truly loving or caring about the male humans in their lives, even if those men and boys are their own family or even their own children. I've seen for too many examples to believe otherwise.

For women of color feminism did not benefit them as it did for white women. That maybe it, due to the fact the white women left women of color behind. I think minority women would have been better served, serving their own communities.

You look at pay, which is a huge factor in the feminism movement. White women on average make more than Black and Latino men in the corporate setting. Asian women, Latina women, and Black Women don’t, in fact they didn’t budge and Black Women by percentage are the most educated demographic in the United States.

Feminism worked but only for one subset of the movement and hat is white women.

I think it's a legitimate fight, but I don't actively identify as a feminist.

Same way I respect and give my blessing to liberation movements around the world but don't consider myself a freedom fighter

Short answer, i don’t

Long answer - I agree with most of what feminism (even 4th wave) has to say, side with the movement and do support it. However, I feel as though, especially as a man, this isn’t ‘my’ movement. I’m an ally to it, removing the patriarchy as a societal benefit does indeed benefit men, but also, the movement inherently is about women primarily - which isn’t a bad thing, the idea is to fight for equality because women’s rights and social standing are more suppressed. Like if someone else calls me a feminist I won’t fight it, but also, I don’t have to be called one nor do I need to call myself one to support a movement.

I don't support any group that has a terrorist subset or formed terrorist subset of society.

And I have seen the damage they cause.

Repeatedly holding back or denying actual equality. Making laws in such a way that women can't be charged with a crime they did unless they are a trans woman.

Making DV laws and divorce laws so bad in Australia that anything you do can count as abuse and have you evicted from your house and all your assets taken.

I guess their personal definition of it is probably completely warped beyond recognition from what it actually means, probably by conservatives or conservative media intentionally demonising or misrepresenting feminists.

I'm a man and I never explicitly or solely identified as a feminist because it was kind of just a normal belief that I always held as part of being left wing, but I categorically am one.

I think it's kind of like how a large amount of people are actually in support of socialist policy when it's not framed as explicitly socialist to them, but then also think socialism is inherently evil and the spawn of the devil.

I do, and I'm also a fairly traditional wife in a fairly traditional marriage. For us, him handling the finances and me the home works very well.

Being a feminist means that I understand what works for us, does not always work for others and people should be free to live the life they choose, as long as they are not harming others.

Honestly I don’t know, feminism IS about equality.

I have 2 theories,

1 - feminism is about equal rights for women with men, so why would men identify as a feminist if it’s about rights for women. When you ask if they should be equal though, they agree, they just don’t seem to understand that that means feminism, because men have never been oppressed by women.

2- the more right wing, extremists, incels, redpill, (insert women hating group here) have been trying to dirty the word feminism and feminists for years because they want women to be oppressed again, and try to paint anyone that identifies as a feminist as a blue haired manic that hates all men, and they go to extremes to try find examples of this or take things out of context. Asking fir real evidence of these evil feminists always comes back with crickets

As an American Married Man with 2 daughters, yes 100%. I’ve always been very liberal anyway.

All my favorite bosses have been women and the 3 coworkers I hang out with are 3 Indian women. They are hilarious . We all have the same very evil sense of humor.

I am an egalitarian feminist who does not subscribe to radical framework and critical theories such as categorizing men as oppressors and blaming every instance of sexism on “patriarchy.”

People are reluctant to identify as a feminist because many modern feminists have strayed away from equality of sex, and they fail to excise extremism from the movement.

I would have refused the feminist label, if I had not known actual egalitarian feminists in real life who have pushed for equality for both men and women.
